Now we're cooking: MasterChef's Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan jump to Channel 7 for new reality show

Former MasterChef judges Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan are set to return to the screens next year as hosts on a rival show.

The two celebrity chefs will join Manu Feildel to head Channel Seven’s new program Plate of Origin, which will be launched around the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In a press release, Seven described Plate of Origin as “a cooking competition with a truly international flavour”. The show will see teams showcase a variety of cuisines in a competitive setting.

“We’re going BIGGER! Which cuisine will reign supreme in this worldwide food fight? Let the flames begin,” the network said in an Instagram post.

Absent from the line-up is former castmate George Calombaris, who left MasterChef along with Preston and Mehigan in July.

According to the Herald Sun’s Fiona Byrne, Calombaris was required to wait longer than his fellow judges to sign with other commercial networks in Australia due to a “hold back” agreement with Channel Ten.

Preston told news.com.au that he, Mehigan and Calombaris “look forward” to pursue international endeavours together “when the time is right”.

“The feedback we have all received in person on our travels and online from so many of the 20 million fans around the world who loved watching the ‘three musketeers’ on TV confirms that we’d be mad not to continue making TV together overseas for the international market,” Preston said.

Earlier this month, Channel Ten announced that Jock Zonfrillo, Melissa Leong and Andy Allen would be the new judges on MasterChef next year.
