A giant of journalism."

During his time at the ABC, Peacock specialised in reporting on politics, the environment and science, and was best known for exposing how global materials giant James Hardie Industries covered up the deaths of thousands of Australians from asbestos.

He also campaigned against censorship and defended the First Nations rights and those of the incarcerated.

72-year-old hiker begins 22,000km trek following in footsteps of Marco Polo

A 72-year-old Italian hiker has begun a 22,000 kilometre trip from Venice to Beijing, following in the footsteps of her hero, Marco Polo.

Vienna Cammarota started her journey from the explorer’s birthplace on Wednesday, April 27, and is planning to travel across 15 countries while following the medieval trade route.

If all goes to plan, Ms Cammarota will be arriving in Beijing by December 2025, as reported by NZ Herald.

Following the route taken by Marco Polo 750 years ago, Ms Cammarota will be supported on her trip by her three daughters and grandchildren, who will send parcels of food and clothes as she needs them.

But you can’t undertake such a trip without some cash, and Ms Cammarota told local media she has saved a total of 40,000 Euros ahead of the trek.

“But I will look for hospitality to save as much as I can and where I can,” she added.

This historically-inspired trip isn’t the first Ms Cammarota has taken, but it’s definitely her most ambitious.

The experienced hiker previously walked the length of Nepal to Everest, followed Jesus’ Biblical route through Palestine, and trekked across the Italian Alps in the footsteps of German philosopher Goethe.

“I love history, culture and archaeology, and I walk in order to see and recount, but above all to listen,” she explained.

To make her journey less monotonous, she told the Euro-Cities blog she would spend the time reading her copy of Marco Polo’s diary and by performing mental arithmetic.

Image: Vienna Cammarota (Facebook)

“Creepiest person in politics:” Tony Abbott’s disturbing joke at UK Brexit speech

Former Prime Minister Tony Aboott has made a strange joke where he said he would be “happy to meet” 72 virgins in an overall bizarre speech on Brexit in the UK.

The politician during his speech, urged the British government to deliver Brexit.

The MP’s remark came when he was asked a question from the audience about a novel the current British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote in 2004 called Seventy Two Virgins.

“I too am a keen student of Mr Johnson, I’m not sure if you’ve read Seventy Two Virgins as well as his book on Churchill?” the man asked.

“No, but I’d be happy to meet them though,” Mr Abbott replied laughing.

“If you knew where you do meet 72 virgins, I don’t think you’d be so keen on that,” the questioner responded.

“You obviously have more intelligence over these things than I do,” Mr Abbott then said.

The novel by the British Prime Minister is about an MP’s bid to halt a suicide bomber from attmepting to assisinate the US President in London.

The title is related to the highly-contentious idea that Muslim suicide bombers believe they will recieve 72 virgins for themselves if they sacrifice their own lives as martyrs for their faith.

Critics took to social media to question the bizarre remarks made by the former MP, with one man labelling Mr Abbott as "the creepiest person in politics."

"So Tony wanted to make a serious speech about Brexit. Unfortunately, this isn’t it," another comment read.

One person wrote: "Deeply deeply weird, wasn't it!"

However a number of people came to Mr Abbott's defence, with one writing: "Sensitive twitter is back again. Why are we so offended at a harmless joke?"

Another added "Another great night for the perpetually offended."

This wasn’t the only bizarre moment during the speech however, when Mr Abbott also used a bible reference to suggest Remainers would fail in a bid to sabotage Brexit.

“As the scripture says: ‘He who puts his hand to the plough and then turns back is not worthy of the Kingdom’,” he said about those challenging Brexit.

He also said they “will fail though, because in the end there won't be enough of them to usurp a democratic vote, to sacrifice their country for short-term political gain and to put Europe before Britain”.

Teenager marries 72-year-old sweetheart

A US teenager has tied the knot with his 72-year-old sweetheart after the couple met in a pizza restaurant, despite a staggering 53-year age gap.

News.com.au reports Gary Hardwick, 19, has been married to Almeda for two years and apparently popped the question after dating the pensioner for just two weeks.

The couple, who live in Maryville, Tennessee, say it was love at first sight.

“The first thing that attracted me to Almeda was her beautiful, gorgeous blue eyes. And her personality,” Gary said.

“She’s always full of laughter and we just connected so well. The chemistry was great.

“Everything about her has just captured my heart since day one.”

Almeda added: “If you love somebody, age is just a number. I’ve now been happily married going on two years with my true soulmate.

“We met at Chuck E Cheese, there was a birthday party there. I looked into his eyes and I just fell in love.

“I knew he was the one I wanted to spend my life with. I was never intimidated by the age at all.”

Despite the age gap, Gary and Almeda reportedly share a lot of interests.

I never feel as though I’m missing out on anything by being married to Almeda,” Gary said.

“I’m really mature for my age; I do not fit into the young age bracket at all.

“I’ve never been attracted to younger women. Even when I was 13 or 14, I’ve always had an attraction for older women and when I told my grandmother, who raised me, I didn’t know how she would take it. But she accepted us.

“A lot of people wait years to get married and everyone has different opinions on getting married quickly. But we knew we were in love, so I jumped on that.”

News.com.au reports Almeda’s grandchildren, Aaron and Indiana Elliot have been supportive, even though they found the relationship difficult to accept early on.

“I only called him Grandfather once and it was when I was drunk,” Aaron said.

“In my head, I see him as a friend more than a grandfather. But you know, our grandmother is happy.”

Indiana, 17, added: “And how can you not be supportive about that?

“For me personally, whenever they first got together it was a little bit weird. But, I mean, we live in the 21st century and those things really shouldn’t matter.

“My mum on the other hand is very outspoken, because there’s an age difference between him and my mum too, so it’s a little weird to see your mother walking around with someone the same age as your own kids.”

What are your thoughts?

Hero image credit: Facebook / Gary Hardwick

Outrage after diners charged $72 to cut birthday cake

It should have been a happy occasion, but one woman’s birthday celebration turned sour when she was charged $72 to cut her birthday cake at a Mornington Peninsula winery for just six people.

Sue, who organised her friend’s birthday lunch at Stillwater at Crittenden, told 3AW the party was furious after such an exorbitant charge for a $10 passionfruit sponge cake purchased from a local bakery.

“We sang happy birthday and everything ... they charged me $72 for the cake to be cut,” Sue said. “If we’d have known we’d have literally cut it with a butter knife.”

However, the restaurant’s director, Zac Poulier, told the Herald Sun that the woman made the booking for 12 people and was aware of the $6 per person service charge.

“It was in the booking notes under her booking that she might be bringing a cake and she was aware that there would be a cakeage charge,” he claimed.

Poulier was also annoyed that rather than taking the issue up with the restaurant, she went straight to a radio station.

“Absolutely it’s disappointing … we did charge $72 but that was for 12 people, not for six and this lady was told at the time of booking about the fee.”

Tell us in the comments below, do you think the woman is right to be angry?

It’s a challenge and I’m rising to it, but it’s incredibly slow [laughs].”

John’s quest began with a PC, using Microsoft then Apple, and led to three brands of mobile phone (he lost the first two mobiles) and an Apple iPad.

John shared his career experiences with us, describing the challenges of being a hyperactive-born journalist. He has reported and sub-edited in each of the mainstream media: newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Virtually eight separate disciplines under the banner of journalism.

The digital devastation to “traditional media” has led to massive cuts to proprietors’ revenue and employment of journalists across the Western world, and John recognises his retirement probably came “just in time”. His farewell speech was not just to Fairfax but a 53-year career.

For the past 14 years John worked as a journalist for Fairfax regional and suburban newspapers in Victoria. For 12 of those years he was a ‘check sub’, improving grammar, fixing errors, “streamlining clunky copy – anything the sub-editors may have missed”.

“I was where the buck stopped,” he says. “If it wasn’t correct in the paper, it was my fault.”

He’s also written two books. Over and Out, published by Penguin, is a humorous account of 32 years’ umpiring cricket in the parks of Melbourne, while Nuggets: Golden and Human (Brolga Publishing) is a beefed-up version of 40 of the hundreds of articles he wrote while feature writer on the Bendigo Advertiser in the early 2000’s.

He now enjoys apps, including Kindle, but, like most seniors, finds books in hard copy “hard to beat”.

John tells how he has been a “voracious” reader since his mid-teens and recalls bringing books home from the library for his parents and two brothers. “I’d have my 12-year-old arms extended as far as I could, resting the bottom book on my hands, the top book under my chin.”

Asked about his experience with ReadyTechGo, John expresses his “love of the process of learning and working with Lisa (founder) and Matt (session facilitator)”. He says he enjoys both the friendly environment for learning – in his top-floor apartment next to the 1935-built art deco Astor Cinema in East St Kilda – and the interaction with his teachers. In Lisa’s eyes, John is a friend, not just a student.

John ascribes determination as the key to keeping up with the IT revolution. “For me, it’s probably stubborn determination,” he adds. “I want retirement to be about continued learning. ReadyTechGo is adding a lot to this new life.”

John insists he’s unsuited to the equipment of IT but is comforted that “at times we’re all stumped by technology. We’re all learning this brave new world of technology, all of the time.”

For five decades this New Zealander, who migrated to Australia in 1967, has been building his own story. Daily, he’s at his keyboard recording it for what he hopes will be his third book. Some freelance writing, he hopes, will further keep the rust at bay. Stay tuned!

What’s John’s favourite discovery so far? Youtube, he says, “I’m lost for hours, in shock and amazement at people’s talent.”

Written by Amber Gibson. Why I’m still backpacking at 72

Geraldine Forster is proof it’s never too late to follow your thirst for adventure. The intrepid over-60 explains why she’s still backpacking at the ripe old age of 72.

When I retired at 65, I bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok, packed a rucksack and waved goodbye to my family. I had no plans, I just knew I wanted to travel.

Seven years later, I'm still travelling the world.

So far I've visited 50 countries, from the completely unspoilt Myanmar to the magical, photogenic Czech Republic – all a far cry from my native Essex.

I've hugged elephants in Thailand, shared a happy New Year's Eve with a hostel owner and his family in China, and eaten copious local delicacies – be it ants' eggs in Cambodia or snake in Taiwan. I can't imagine settling down. Until I retired, I'd never dreamed of leaving behind my family for a long holiday, never mind several years. But after 30 years of slogging away running a hair salon and supporting my three children (now in their 40s) as a single parent, I finally felt free.

I speak to my family regularly on Facebook and WhatsApp, and I keep a blog so they know what I'm up to and where I am. I stay in hostels (because they're cheaper and I'm travelling on a pension) and often blog about the people I meet – you get a real mishmash.

It can be annoying, especially when people roll in at 3am or decide to repack their luggage in the middle of the night, but I like the community vibe and I've learnt to be open-minded.

I once had dinner with a lovely Spanish backpacker in Bangkok who seemed perfectly respectable, but then told me quite matter-of-factly about his love of fetish clubs. I thought it was funny and blogged about it the next morning – but my youngest son called me up, furious.

My eight-year-old granddaughter had been reading about it. "Mother!" he cried, "I can't believe you're writing pornography. I thought you were sightseeing." I really hadn't seen it like that – I have become very accepting.

My most dangerous trip so far was a tour of Kashmir, South Asia, last year. The mountain landscape is dramatic, just like a film set, but it's not the safest place because of terrorism.

I was also harassed a few times by men – it's a very conservative Muslim area and, as a blonde woman on my own, I stood out. I'm only 155cm, but I think of myself as pretty strong. If a man threatens me, I tell him to leave me alone, and I'm prepared to whack him with my camera if he doesn't.

My family long for me to be a normal grandmother to my four grandchildren. I love them dearly but it's not going to happen. We all have the right to realise our dreams – and I still have 101 places to visit including Argentina, to learn the tango. I hope my grandson, now 14, will join me when he's old enough.

When people say, "Don't you think you're a bit old to be doing this?" (as they often do), my answer is always the same: I'm healthy and full of energy. And I don't think anyone should be limited by age.

Could you ever see yourself taking a trip like this?

Written by Geraldine Forster. Prince William rushes to the aid of fallen 72-year-old

Prince William has come to the rescue of a 72-year-old man, after he collapsed during the royal’s visit to an Essex school. Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, John Douglas-Hughes, fell over when welcoming the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Stewards Academy School, and William immediately rushed to the man’s side.

The ultra-polite 72-year-old actually apologised to the young royal, who immediately replied, “no, it’s all right,” and helped him to his feet.

William and Kate were visiting the school as part of their mental health campaign, Heads Together, meeting with students and teachers to help drive the conversation around youth mental health issues such as bullying and stress.

“Having met Catherine on a couple of occasions, she's so knowledgeable about mental health and they are really passionate,” Director of Clinical Services at children’s charity Place2Be, Dr Fiona Pienaar said. “I just think it's marvellous what they are doing.”

Prior to their visit, William wrote a blog post revealing how his young children inspired him to get involved in the campaign. “Catherine and I have young children who will be going through this themselves in a short period of time,” he wrote. “Like all parents we will want to make sure that our children are not just able to achieve their academic potential at school but are also happy and emotionally supported.

“The sooner children learn in life that asking for help is okay, the better. It better equips us for adulthood - just as much as good academic results.”

Related links:

Prince William shows off dance moves and baking skills at London youth centre

Charlotte and George to accompany Kate and William on official tour

Duchess of Cambridge reveals the job she’d love if she wasn’t a royal

WWII veteran to marry first love after 72 years apart

World War II veteran, Roy Vickerman, 90, is set to marry his first love, Nora Jackson, 89, more than 70 years after he first proposed in 1944.

The couple first met in 1940 at school in Bucknall, Staffordshire. They got engaged in 1944, both aged 18, a week before Roy had to go fight in the D-Day Landings in Normandy. But when Roy returned home to England, he struggled to adjust to civilian life. Shell-shocked and broken, Roy broke off the engagement to Nora.

Both moved on with their lives, going on to marry and have children, and later grandchildren. However, for seven decades Roy regretted losing his childhood sweetheart and set about finding her. He eventually tracked her down after calling into radio show “Late Night Love”. With the help of the station, Roy found Nora, who was incredibly living just a mere two miles away from him.

At their reunion, they both discovered their partners had since passed away and immediately picked up where they left off.

<img width="469" height="262" src="https://metrouk2.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/ad_2018757021.jpg?w=620&h=346&crop=1" alt="Roy Vickerman who is celebrating his 90th birthday by getting engaged to his fiancÈ, Nora Nicholls ñ who he was engaged to during the war years, but lost contact for over 70 years. See NTI story NTILOVE. Roy Vickerman told a taxi driver to wait while he called on his former fiancÈe whom he'd not seen for 70 years. The D-Day veteran had no wish to upset his ex-girlfriend ñ neither did he know if she was still married ñ so he simply planned to give her some flowers, apologise for the way their affair had ended, and then leave. Instead, Nora Jackson threw her arms around Roy as soon as she saw him. And now a year on, the couple have celebrated their engagement at Roy's 90th birthday party. The couple first met at school in Stoke-on-Trent after Roy had been evacuated from London and they soon became engaged ñ but the war interrupted their plans. Roy was called up to serve with Black Watch, then joined the army intelligence corps. He took part in the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded by a sniper during the invasion of Germany. The affair ended when he returned home, suffering what today would be diagnosed as post-traumatic stress disorder. Roy and Nora both moved on with their lives. It was just like old times.”

A year on at Roy’s 90th birthday, Roy proposed to Nora for a second time – with the same engagement ring he proposed to her with 72 years ago.

“She knew I was going to propose because it was the original ring but the guests didn’t know,” Roy said. “I didn’t go down on one knee because I wouldn’t get up again, but we had the first dance.”

Related links:

Confessions of an online dater

7 unexpected places to meet someone

The shocking costs of online dating scams

5 looks you’ll want to steal from Judith – the 72-year-old fashion blogger

Meet Judith, a style blogger who is dedicated to inspiring older women with her fashion blog, The Style Crone. The 72-year-old trendsetter from Colorado in the US is on a mission to take back the word “crone” to its “original meaning, signifying a woman of a ‘certain age’ who embodies all her life’s wisdom, knowledge, experience, and love.” And after browsing her website and Instagram of amazingly quirky outfits we were certainly inspired to, as Judith advises, to “cherish our inner crone”.

On why she decided to start her blog, Judith writes on her site: “I spent most of my career working as a psychiatric nurse in an emergency setting. I also spent a period of time managing the care of head and spinal cord injuries. Choosing my outfits, which always included a hat, was a way to express myself creatively and as a form of meditation as I approached my day, which usually included extreme and painful stories told by interesting, traumatised people.”

We love Judith’s zest for life and her original personal style. Here are five of our favourite looks from her blog:

To find more of Judith’s style visit her Instagram or website.
