Passenger sparks debate over travellers sleeping in aisle seats

A heated debate has erupted online after a passenger suggested those sitting in an aisle seat should remain alert and awake for the entire flight, with the only exception being if it's a long-flight of seven hours or more.

“A person sitting in an aisle seat on a plane should not be allowed to sleep," they wrote on Reddit.

The reason behind it, according to the passenger, is to ensure that middle and window seat passengers can access the toilet, get served by flight attendants, and evacuate quickly in an emergency.

“There are some exceptions and those would probably be on any flight longer than seven hours.

“But anything shorter than that, you should not be sleeping. What if the middle or window passenger needs the bathroom, or if the flight attendant needs to hand them something – You’ll be in the way.”

They added that a snoozing aisle seat passenger could potentially slow down evacuation during an emergency and put everyone at risk.

“Now you would be risking people’s lives because you fell asleep,” they wrote.

Social media users flocked to the Reddit thread to share their thoughts.

“Nah, just poke me and wake me up if you need me to get up or do something," one wrote.

“I’m well aware that I’m in the way, believe me. I’m certainly not there because I wanted to be in the aisle seat.”

“If you sleep in an aisle seat, you deal with people getting up. That’s the unwritten rule," another added.

A few others supported the idea, but shared their own take on plane etiquette.

“My take on this: if you sleep in the aisle seat, you must be okay with being woken up multiple times to let the folks in your row get up.

“Other flight rules: middle seat gets the armrest, and window seat must raise the window shade during taxi, takeoff, and landing so the rest of us in the row can watch.”

Image: Shutterstock

I think this wedding is going to be unique because it’s going to be at the zoo with tons of animals.

“I’m not sure how many people have walked down the aisle with a koala, but we may be setting some new trends for weddings from here on out!”

Her husband-to-be also revealed that she has “colour-coded binders and itineraries” for her family members for the occasion, jokingly comparing her to Leslie Knope from TV’s Parks & Recreation. Who will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle?

Meghan Markle is reportedly “distraught” following her father Thomas’s decision to pull out of her wedding to Prince Harry this weekend.

The reclusive former TV lighting director initially decided not to attend the royal wedding following the fallout from setting up a series of paparazzi photos. But a day later, Markle said he wanted to walk his daughter down the aisle but can no longer do so as he will be facing “major surgery”, after suffering a recent heart attack.

Following the sudden news Markle would no longer be attending, a Kensington Palace spokesman said: “This is a deeply personal moment for Ms Markle in the days before her wedding. She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr Markle in this difficult situation.”

With the wedding only a few days away, Meghan has been left without anyone to walk her down the aisle in St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on Saturday.

So who is the most likely candidate to take over the important job?

1. Doria Ragland

Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, 61, is the most obvious choice now to walk Meghan down the aisle.

The former actress is incredibly close to her mother and has often spoke about their relationship.

Doria has also met her future son-in-law, who she met at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games in Toronto last year.

During Meghan and Harry’s engagement interview, Prince Harry said Doria as “awesome”.

2. Prince Charles

With Meghan’s father and grandfather absent on the day, will her future father-in-law walk her down the aisle?

Prince Charles has no other official duty during the wedding, and has spoken about how excited he and the Duchess of Cornwall are to welcome Meghan into their family.

3. Prince William

While Prince William already has an important job on the day as Harry’s best man, it is possible that he will do the honours of walking Meghan down the aisle if she is unable to find anyone else.

William and Kate have spent a lot of time with Meghan since the start of her relationship with Harry.

Although the idea seems a little strange, there is a royal precedent.

Princess Margaret’s brother-in-law Prince Philip walked her down the aisle at her wedding to Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960, as her father had passed away eight years earlier.

The special person Meghan Markle wants to walk her down the aisle

She broke tradition recently by being the first royal girlfriend to be invited to Christmas with the Queen, and now royal-to-be Meghan Markle is set to shake things up on her wedding day too.

E! News has reported that Ms Markle plans to have her mother, Doria Ragland, walk her down the aisle.

Traditionally, brides would be walked down the aisle by their father, however an insider claims Ms Markle would prefer to have her mother by her side, rather than ‘her reclusive father’ Thomas Markle.

A post shared by Kensington Palace (@kensingtonroyal) on Dec 21, 2017 at 6:00am PST

With the wedding already set for May 19 at Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace hasn’t confirmed whether the mother of the bride will give her away.
While the middle seat on planes generally doesn’t win many fans, travellers are generally fiercely divided about what offers the better option out of the aisle or window seat.

And according to phycologists, your preference says a lot about your personality:

If you choose an aisle seat

According to University of Washington professor Jonathan Bricker, PhD, if you chose an aisle seat you’re generally going to be someone who values their freedom.

“You know you have the ability to get up and walk around without having to ask anyone or climb over your seat mate,” Professor Bricker says.

But apparently also be a sign of an introversion

Professor Bricker added: “In a large group of people, introverts feel physically uncomfortable and tend to want to stay on the periphery — they don’t like to be surrounded by people or objects on all sides.”

If you choose a window seat

The window seat is a tricky one. It’s arguably the comfiest seat on the plane with the extra gap between the armrest and the wall, and a spot to lean on. But the person sitting here also has to ask whenever they’re going to the bathroom.

“Passengers who favour the window seat like to be in control, tend to take an ‘every man for themselves’ attitude towards life, and are often more easily irritable,” Dr Becky Spelman, chief psychologist at Harley Street’s Private Therapy Clinic told The Telegraph.

“They also like to ‘nest’ and prefer to exist in their own bubble.”

Behavioural Psychologist Jo Hemmings added: “Champions of the window seat tend to be more selfish as well as less anxious, seasoned flyers who are more confident in disturbing others.”

What do you prefer, aisle or window?

Groom carries his wheelchair-bound wife down the aisle

After a tragic car accident left her in a wheelchair just five weeks before her wedding, Hannah Patterson was told that while she would make a full recovery, she would not be able to walk in time for her big day. However, at the last minute, her loving husband-to-be, Scott, stepped in and carried Hannah down the aisle.

“Obviously, being in the wheelchair and not able to walk was very upsetting for me on my wedding day, but I had cried at the rehearsal so I didn’t cry on the day,” she told ABC News.

“I was determined to stand for my vows,” she added. “It was hard on me to stand for that long even with Stuart holding me up, but it doesn’t seem obvious in the pictures and video the pain I was in.

“Stuart has never left my side during all of this,” she said. “I know it has been hard on him to see me like this, but he was strong for both of us. He always made me see how blessed I was... I had to try to be thankful I was still there to get married.”

Hannah is still on the road to recovery, having broken her pelvis in three places, punctured a kidney, broken ribs, had a concussion and a partial loss of hearing. “I am doing better,” she said. “I am able to use a cane in the house now.”

Take a look at the incredible moment in the gallery above and tell us in the comments, what’s the most memorable thing that happened on your wedding day?

Images: Sarah Grace Photography

Related links:

Grandmother finds love again 25 years after death of husband

We travelled to the UK to recreate our wedding photo

Mum with MS shares beautiful dance with son at wedding

Bride walked down the aisle by man who received her father’s heart

Ten years ago, when she was 23 years old, Jeni Stepien lost her father. Michael Stepien was killed in a robbery in 2006 and, after 24 hours on life support, the family accepted the tragedy and donated his organs.

At that time, New Jersey resident Arthur Thomas had been waiting for a heart for ten years. He had been told if he did not receive a transplant in the next few days, he would die. He received Michael’s heart within the next 48 hours.

The following Christmas, Arthur or “Tom” sent the Stepiens a thank you card. In the years following, letters turned into phone calls and the families cultivated a special bond. When Jeni started planning her wedding and questioning who would walk her down the aisle, her fiancé had a wonderful idea that couldn’t seem more perfect.

“My fiancé suggested I write him a letter; that way Tom would feel in no way obligated or pressured by my request” she told the Huffington Post.

A few days after sending the letter she got a phone call, she said. Tom’s answer was yes. He would walk her down the aisle.

Jeni Stepien was unable to hold back tears when she embraced him for the first time and felt her father’s heart beating inside him.

“Meeting Tom was so incredible!” she said. “He is such a gracious and kind-hearted man. You could tell he was so thankful for his life, and that radiated from him.”

In sharing her story, Stepien said she hopes it send a very important message to others: Organ donations save lives.

“Organ donation can provide an opportunity for a second chance at life. It is an exceptional gift, one that is selfless and generous, and always appreciated by the recipient,” she said. “We were able to see how wonderfully Tom was progressing all of these years, simply thriving, and [that] in turn, helped us with our own grief.”

Are you thinking about becoming an organ donor? There is a secret way to raise the armrest on your aisle seat

It’s no secret that aeroplanes are tight for space and riddled with social cues. There’s negotiating the limited leg room, taking note of recycling etiquette and, of course, the silent negotiation of sharing the arm rest.

This is why many opt for the aisle seat- and that option is about to get a whole lot better.

Usually, the arm rest in the seats particularly will be movable, to cater for non-ambulatory wheelchair passengers. Simply reach under your armrest, locate the small lever or button, and push or slide to release the hinge lock, which will allow you to raise the armrest and make use of all that empty aisle space.

Of course, flight attendants will ask you to leave the arm rest down during take-off, landing and meal service, but for the majority of the flight, those precious extra inches are all yours.

Have you done this on a fight? Let us know in the comments below.

Related inks:

10 more travel scams to watch out for

6 things you need to know about travel vaccinations

10 ways to beat travel sickness
