Bunnings announce game-changing venture

Everyone is well-acquainted with multiple trips to Bunnings for forgotten items, but now the retail giant's new venture with Uber could make life just a little easier before Christmas.

The retail giant is teaming up with the rideshare and courier service to equip over 100 regional and metropolitan stores with same day parcel delivery.

So shoppers looking for a last minute Christmas gift can get same day parcel delivery for orders placed by 2pm right up until December 23rd. The packages will be delivered by 7pm that day.

With Australia Post Christmas delivery cut-offs set to take effect from December 20, the retail giants same-day delivery service with Uber makes it much easier for shoppers over the holiday season.

The service will operate via the Bunnings website, at a flat fee of $15 for any purchases.

The only condition is that for some regional outlets, the same-day delivery guarantee is subject to geographical limits, a radius of 15 kilometres from any store.

“We’re committed to offering our customers the best experience, widest range and lowest prices, and same day parcel delivery across regional Australia is another way we can improve this offering”, Bunnings Chief Operating Officer, Ryan Baker said.

“This builds on our current same day parcel delivery offering across metro Australia, bringing more convenience to our regional customers, and hopefully helping to ease some of the stress this time of year can bring.”

Baker also emphasised that this service would not replace the in-store experience Aussies love.

“Some customers value coming into the store to browse, talk to the team and enjoy the Bunnings experience such as a coffee in the cafe or the sausage sizzle hosted by a local community group. But for others, the convenience of delivery is preferred,” he said.

Image: haireena / Shutterstock.com

Ray Hadley announces 2GB replacement

Ray Hadley has announced his replacement on 2GB's morning show, following his shock retirement announcement last month.

Hadley told listeners live on-air that Mark Levy would be stepping up to the mic as early as next Monday.

“That’s Mark Levy in the studio. He is my replacement as of next Monday, actually, he’s taking over,” Hadley told 2GB listeners on Tuesday morning.

“So that’s wonderful news for the station and wonderful news for our listeners as well.”

Hadley explained that he'd been receiving emails from listeners who wanted Levy to become his replacement, and his response at the time was: “I’ve written back … and said ‘It’s not my decision, it’s a decision for management, and it’s been taken, and I can only hardly endorse the decision they’ve made’.”

Levy, who hosts 2GB’s Wide World of Sports has previously filled in for Hadley, and said he felt "extremely honoured" to be taking on the role.

“As a young kid I grew up listening to the talkback kings and to be taking over a timeslot that’s been owned by a mentor and a friend for the last 20 years is something I am excited about and extremely honoured to do,” Levy said.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead and I can’t wait to speak to our loyal listeners every morning about the issues affecting them in what’s shaping up as an important election year.”

The change comes after Hadley announced his retirement in November, with his last day tipped to be December 13.

“It’s been a hell of a ride from a young bloke who wanted to call the races, but the time has come for someone else to do the job,” Hadley told listeners at the time.

Image: 2GB

"About time": Coles bold parking move sparks debate

Frustrated staff at a Coles-owned bottle shop in Brisbane have taken matters into their own hands and retaliated against drivers flouting parking rules outside their store.

Management at a First Choice Liquor Market store in Newstead have locked in cars taking advantage of the customer-only spaces.

It is understood that some cars remain parked in the 15-minute spots for extended periods, sometimes overnight, despite signs saying that fines apply.

A photo shared on Facebook showed a car with P-plates blocked in by a yellow bollard and note that read: "Due to you not adhering to the parking rules, your vehicle has been locked in by management and will be kept on record."

"Please see First Choice management to discuss your options".

A local woman who shared the photos said there "were at least two other cars locked in" when she was passing by this week.

Locals were divided by the store's actions, but many supported their decision.

"About time. Pub takes all the spaces," one said. "I’ve been there when the store opens and there have been no car spaces available".

"Don’t park where you shouldn’t. It’s simple," another added.

A third said it was "about bloody time" something was done about the parking.

However, a few others had a more understanding approach, with one local saying that the limited parking in a large apartment complex across the road could be contributing to the limited parking.

Another suggested the staff had gone too far, noting the importance of being able to "flee" in a hurry, particularly in violent situations.

"The thought of their vehicle being blocked in by bollard, should an unthinkable situation arise, is horrific to think of," she said.

"While I understand this would be frustrating for your shop, it could be putting someone’s life in danger — as another perspective to think of."

Coles have responded to the management's actions explaining that their commitment to customers means providing "parking and clear access to our stores."

"The Newstead store carpark is owned by Coles and has signage throughout the carpark informing locals about parking time restrictions which are also painted on the parking bays," a Coles spokesperson told Yahoo News.

"To ensure we are making our stores more accessible for customers, our store team may use its discretion to remind the community of the parking rules.”

Images: Facebook

Black Friday sales are on again. To score a genuine bargain, it helps to go in with a plan

Park Thaichon, University of Southern Queensland and Sara Quach, Griffith University

November 29th was Black Friday, the official beginning of one of the biggest sales events of the year.

With so many consumers still feeling the cost-of-living pinch, it’s expected to once again bring bargain hunters out in droves.

While some sales have already started, market research company Roy Morgan estimates Australian shoppers will spend a record $6.7 billion over the four-day shopping window. That’s up more than 5% on last year.

For Australians, it’s one of three big annual sales events. The others take place at the end of each financial year (EOFY) and on Boxing Day.

Despite being a recent entrant to Australia, Black Friday has quickly become one of the most important shopping days of the year.

For consumers, navigating these sales and dodging the marketing tricks played by retailers is no mean feat. Here’s what you should know.

What exactly is Black Friday?

Black Friday as a major sales event originated in the United States. It falls on the day after Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November each year.

A four day sales window then typically runs over the weekend after Thanksgiving, including “Cyber Monday” – a similar event that was set up more recently to encourage online shopping.

But as you might have noticed, this official start date doesn’t prevent retailers from discounting products earlier, something many do.

Australians don’t officially celebrate Thanksgiving. Nonetheless, the sales event has gained significant traction here over the past decade or so.

This was initially driven by big US companies operating here, such as Apple and Amazon. But it was soon adopted and ultimately embraced by Australia’s own big retailers.

Some Australian retailers now say Black Friday has already overtaken Boxing Day to become their most important sales event, a standing it could well cement further this year.

It’s been a similar story across much of the world. Countries including Canada, Brazil, France and the UK all now mark the occasion with their own big sales events.

How do big sales work?

Black Friday and other big sales events are designed to create a sense of urgency. They lean heavily into the phenomenon known as fear of missing out – called FOMO for short.

Retailers know that shoppers feel the pressure to buy when they think they might miss out. This is called scarcity marketing.

Retailers have ways of creating artificial scarcity, which can pressure us to make purchase decisions that aren’t in our best interests.

You’ve probably seen phrases in stores and online such as “only two left!” or “today only”. These tactics are designed to make you act.

The extent of savings can also depend on retailers’ dynamic pricing tactics. Many businesses use algorithms to adjust discounts in real time based on customer demand, inventory levels and competitor trends.

Popular items may start with small discounts, while less popular products get larger price cuts to attract interest.

How to be a savvy shopper

With these factors in mind, there are a few strategies that can help you you keep a clear head.

One tactic is to create a shopping list and understand the importance of sticking to predetermined purchase decisions and a predetermined budget. Prioritise needs over impulsive wants.

For example, if you need to replace an old keyboard amid a big sale, set a budget before you start looking, and try to avoid buying an entirely new computer just because it’s discounted in-store.

Shoppers should prepare for fluctuating prices, while being cautious of tactics such as artificially inflated “fake” discounts, where original prices are exaggerated to make savings seem more appealing.

Our previous research has shown price promotion can trigger customer emotions such as surprise and lead to anticipated regret, influencing their purchase decisions.

Go in with a plan

Another tactic is to do some window shopping in the days or weeks beforehand. This allows you to check and research the products you’re interested in. Note down their non-sale prices for future reference.

Create a list of where to buy, along with a few alternatives. For shoes and clothing, try things on if you can and note down your size. That can help you act quickly once the sales go live.

And in the excitement of all the sales, don’t forget: if you don’t actually want or need anything, there’s always the option of not shopping at all.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Grandmother mistakes $50m Powerball win for solar panel sales call

A quiet Thursday evening turned into an unforgettable moment for one Central Queensland grandmother, who was expecting yet another pesky solar panel sales pitch but instead received news that would blow the roof off any house – solar panels or not.

The elderly couple held one of two division one winning entries in Thursday night’s $100 million Powerball jackpot, pocketing a life-altering $50 million. While most of us might faint, dance or immediately Google "how to buy a private island", the grandmother’s first reaction was a calm, “You’re joking.”

“I expected you to ask if we have solar panels, not to tell us we’ve just won $50 million," she told the Lott official, still recovering from the whiplash of going from potential sales target to multi-millionaire. “There’s going to be a few more prezzies under the tree on Christmas day.”

The grandmother confessed that their winning ticket wasn’t even the result of her usual superstitious number-picking strategy. “I’ve been playing for a long time now – since the game first started. I had always used the same numbers, but this ticket was just a QuickPick. I’m in a total state of shock."

The couple, long-time residents of Rockhampton, said the windfall would primarily benefit their family. Of course, that family might now include second cousins they've never met and a few random people claiming they once smiled at them in Woolies.

Meanwhile, the second winner – hailing from Melbourne’s City of Darebin – remains blissfully unaware they’re sitting on $50 million at the time of writing. The unregistered ticket holder has yet to come forward, sparking a local hunt. Lott officials have urged residents to check every ticket – even the crumpled one in your car’s cupholder.

So, next time your phone rings and you brace yourself for a sales pitch, remember: it might just be the universe handing you $50 million. Or, you know, another pitch for that unlimited mobile plan.

Image: Shutterstock

Susie O'Neill's replacement announced on popular morning show

Popular comedian Nikki Osborne has been announced as the new co-host of Nova Brisbane’s 106.9 breakfast show, stepping in to fill the void left by Olympic swimming champion Susie O’Neill.

Osborne will join longtime presenters Ash Bradnam and David “Luttsy” Lutteral from January 20, 2024, bringing her signature humour and vibrant personality to the much-loved morning program.

“I have big flippers to fill, but I’m confident Brisbane will warm to my ways,” Osborne quipped. “Sure, I get in trouble a bit, but I’ve got two big brothers in Ash and Luttsy, and I have no doubt they’ll steer me even further off course!”

Osborne, a seasoned performer in the Australian entertainment industry, is no stranger to the spotlight. She has made her mark in stand-up comedy and starred in TV shows such as How To Stay Married and Kinne Tonight. Reality TV fans may also recognise her from I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here in 2020 and Dancing with the Stars earlier this year.

A Brisbane native and mother of two, Osborne expressed excitement about her new role. “I love Brisbane. I grew up here, and I look forward to having a good laugh with our listeners in this amazing city,” she said.

Her appointment comes after O’Neill’s tearful departure announcement last month. O’Neill, who has been a staple of Nova’s breakfast lineup for over a decade, revealed that turning 50 had prompted her to embrace new personal and professional opportunities.

“For a lot of the time, it has been more than just a job,” O’Neill shared emotionally. “When I’ve had really hard times, I’ve known that I can come in here, just be myself, and enjoy it.”

Reflecting on her decision, O’Neill explained, “I feel like I want to get back to the grassroots of sport and involve myself more in the wider community.”

Listeners can expect a fresh dynamic with Osborne at the mic, as she brings her comedic flair and Brisbane pride to the morning airwaves.

Images: Nova

Russell Crowe lists harbourfront apartment for sale

Russell Crowe looks set to bid farewell to his stunning harbourfront apartment in Sydney.

Sources have confirmed the 60-year-old actor will sell his 1000sqm property "if the price is right".

The Gladiator star has reportedly listed the apartment off-market with a price guide ranging from $42 million to $45 million, however McGrath Double Bay agents William Manning and Luke Hogan, who are in charge of selling the property have refused to comment.

The waterfront property is located on Finger Wharf in the upscale Woolloomooloo area, just 2km from Sydney's CBD.

Initially designed to accommodate four separate private apartments, the property features 11 bedrooms, and has its own 35-metre marina berth.

The property itself is rare as the new owner will get the entire floor that's north-facing to themselves, with buyers reportedly "lining up" to take a look, according to realestate.com.au.

However, the new owner might also need to do a makeover of the residence before moving in as the actor hasn't renovated the property since buying it from Nutrimetrics founder Imelda Roche and her late husband, Bill Roche, in 2003.

Crowe bought the lavish property for $14.35 million in 2003 and considered listing it for $25 million eight years ago.

It was the highest priced apartment sale in Sydney at the time, and now prices for a penthouse at One Sydney Harbour in Barangaroo can go up from $140 million.

Images: realestate.com.au/ Getty

"Alive and well": Fans confused over Dr Harry Cooper death announcement

Dr Harry Cooper and Channel Seven have been forced to clarify that the famous TV vet is alive and kicking after his Wikipedia page stated he had died.

According to Cooper's Wiki page, the TV personality died at the age of 80 on November 16th 2024.

However, Ben Fordham and his 2GB team have confirmed that this is not the case.

"[Dr. Harry] has had a bit of a shock this week, courtesy of something that appeared online," explained Fordham on his popular radio show.

"This week we were contacted by a listener, they alerted us to the fact that according to Google and Wikipedia, Dr. Harry Cooper was no longer with us!"

Fordham explained that he had done his own investigations of the claims and observed the Wikipedia page in question, which read that "Dr. Harry Cooper OAM, more commonly known as Dr. Harry, an Australian vet and TV personality best known for his media appearances, born February 20, 1943, died November 16, 2024."

The unofficial death notice prompted several listeners to reach out to the team at 2GB, asking if they'd heard any news about Dr. Harry's alleged death.

"A fan of Dr. Harry Cooper got in touch w us a couple of days ago and said, 'Did you know that Dr. Harry had died?," shared Fordham.

"And we all looked at each other and said, 'No?'

"And then we got another message, 'Can you confirm that Dr. Harry has passed away?' Again, we were looking online, and he was in New Idea at the start of the year celebrating his 80th birthday."

"And the most recent story about Dr. Harry was from September, when he visited a camel farm."

In order to confirm once and for all, Fordham reached out to the Seven Network, who provided a statement revealing the good news that, "Harry is alive and well."

"After tipping off Seven, the reference to his death has been removed from Wikipedia," Fordham added. "So, its another reminder – you can't believe everything you read."

Cost-of-living pressures and anger at the nation-wide supermarket duopoly have influenced the Australian Word of the Year for 2024.

The Australian National Dictionary Centre, based at the Australian National University, has chosen "Colesworth": a blended word referencing the country's largest supermarket chains, Coles and Woolworths.

Senior Researcher Mark Gwynn said the word is almost exclusively used in negative contexts, with many calling out the power held by both supermarket giants.

Although the word itself has been circulated for several years, its use has skyrocketed over the past 12 months, according to Gwynn.

"Aussies walk out of the supermarket with less after paying more, but then hear news of massive profits in the supermarket sector. And with official investigations into some of the pricing practices at Australia's two largest supermarkets, it's no wonder that ordinary shoppers have become cynical," he said.

"The blend of the supermarket names Coles and Woolworths into Colesworth provides a succinct way of referring to both supermarkets while at the same time hinting at the negative aspects of what is perceived as an unfair duopoly."

Other shortlisted words include a mix of terms referencing politics, tax, and climate change.

"Breaking" also made the shortlist, following the iconic performance by Australian artist RayGun at the Paris Olympic Games, with words included "climate trigger," "ute tax," and "YIMBY" (Yes In My Backyard).

Quite frankly it’s disgusting”.

Over the weekend, the Women’s Super League launched a “Rainbow Laces” campaign, promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion initiatives.

Women’s football commentator Paul Wheeler wrote: "'Homophobia isn’t a thing in women’s football' - Also women’s football, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis announce they’re having a baby and comments are full of “fans” spouting the worst kind of homophobic crap on Rainbow Laces weekend”.

Chelsea Pride, an LGBTQ+ support group for Chelsea fans also said: “Homophobia has no place in football, at Chelsea, or in our society."

“It’s heartbreaking and infuriating to see social media flooded with hateful comments when we should be celebrating love, pride, and unity.

“Over the weekend and today, our club was forced to shut down comments and even delete posts, posts that should have been shining moments of joy, from the powerful symbolism of Rainbow Laces to the incredible news that Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis will welcome a child in 2025.

“’No to Hate’ isn’t just a slogan; it’s a battle cry. It’s a reminder that we must keep fighting for what is right, for true acceptance, and for a game that embraces everyone without exception.

“At Chelsea Pride, we stand against every act of homophobia with unwavering strength and passion.
