Aussie celeb buys winning house on The Block

Series 13 of The Block has finally come to an end after a dramatic finale which saw 24-year-old Elyse Knowles and 28-year-old Josh Barker sell their five-bedroom Elsternwick property for $447,000 over the reserve, earning themselves an extra $100,000 in prize money.

“That’s life changing,” Elyse said of the win. “Oh, breathe. I’m still like, ‘Oh, what happened?’”

The young couple from Melbourne, who were the favourites to win, sold the Regent Street house for a staggering $3.067 million to a surprise celebrity bidder – comedian Dave Hughes.

“I don’t live too far away and I was driving past and I was thinking, ‘Gee, it’s a good spot, it’s a good house, it’s a good area,” Hughes said. “And now we own it.”

Melbourne parents Jason Price and Sarah Windebank also broke the $3 million mark, selling their house for $3.007 million, taking home a profit of $387,000.

The strong start ended in disappointment for some of the remaining contestants, however.

Professional renovators Ronnie and Georgia Caceres’ property was passed in at auction after failing to meet the $2.62 million reserve, but the couple made the sale just moments later in a private negotiation for $2.781 million, walking away with $161,000.

NSW South Coast-based mates Mark “Sticks” Croker and Clint “Wombat” Price were thrilled to pocket $130,000 after their house sold for $2.65 million. “It’s magic, what else can we do,” Wombat said. “Someone got a great home, I hope it’s a family.”

The only couple not to reach the six-figure mark in profit was Hannah and Clint Amos, who pocketed a relatively small $95,000 after their home sold for $2.615 million – but they were still over the moon with the result.

“For 12 weeks of blood, sweat and tears to walk away with $95,000, it clears all our debts and gives us a really great opportunity to have a beautiful holiday we deserve,” Clint said.
