Woman injured after underground explosion

A young woman has been rushed to hospital after a series of underground explosions ripped open a footpath in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast on Sunday evening.

Emergency services were called to Cavill Avenue about 5.18pm on Sunday following reports of a "pressure blast".

The woman aged in her 20s was walking down the street at the time and fell into a hole left by the blast. She suffered minor leg injuries and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in stable condition.

An exclusion zone - which included Cavill Avenue, Elkhorn Ave, The Esplanade and Surfers Paradise Boulevard - was then put in place and anyone within the area was asked to remain indoors until further notice.

It was later replaced with limited pedestrian access on Cavill and Orchid Avenues.

The preliminary cause of the explosions was an electrical fault according to Sunrise.

“A woman actually fell into a manhole because of the first explosion. Surfers Paradise right behind me was sent into chaos at around yesterday after reports there was multiple explosions,” Sunrise Gold Coast reporter Sam Payne said on Monday.

“Emergency services rushed to the scene, trying to figure out what happened.

“A woman in her 20s, was walking over this manhole, and it essentially swallowed her. She fell in. She was then brought out by members of the public.

“She was taken away and a second explosion then went off. This prompted police to shut the area down, ordering everyone to stay inside, businesses to close. No one to go near the street.

“It turns out it was an electrical fault at the two manholes behind me. That has since been cleared and people have been walking over it this morning.

“Thankfully, the woman in her 20s was not seriously injured. People are walking over it again now. It’s apparently safe now, but would’ve been much more dangerous if more people were standing over it and thankfully no one was seriously injured,” he said.

Image: Seven

Search for trapped Sydney woman ends in tragedy

The search for a woman in her 30s caught in the middle of an explosion in Western Sydney has ended in tragedy.

Jasmin Mhey was the only person unaccounted for after a townhouse in Western Sydney was destroyed in an explosion on Saturday afternoon, caused by a suspected gas leak.

Now, more than 30 hours after the blast, search and rescue teams on Monday confirmed they had located the body of a woman, who has yet to be formally identified.

The frantic search for Ms Mhey began on Saturday after the explosion, but was hampered by wet weather.

On Monday morning, police confirmed in a statement that the body of a woman had been found.

“Following an extensive search operation over the weekend, the body of a woman was found about 3.20am on Monday at the scene," the statement said.

“The woman is yet to be formally identified. A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.”

Neighbours on Sunday told of how the missing woman’s mother reacted when she found out her daughter was caught up in the blast.

“She broke out crying a couple of times,” neighbour Evelyn said.

“But then she kept saying, ‘my daughter’s strong, my daughter’s strong, my daughter’s strong’.”

Emergency services are yet to establish what caused the blast, which will be subject to a NSW Police investigation, although police were initially called to the area to reports of a gas explosion.

"Nobody wins": Sam Newman provides update after explosive outburst

The future of Sam Newman's podcast is in jeopardy after his co-host Don Scott has officially quit the program.

The shock exit comes after Newman launched into an expletive-ridden tirade at Scott last week in a now deleted segment of the podcast, which ended with Newman telling Scott to "f**k off" as he left the building.

Now, Scott has returned to the You Cannot Be Serious podcast, but only to confirm he isn't coming back.

“You do whatever you want to do … (but) what is the point of trying to have a discussion with somebody who is going off their brain?” Scott asked.

“You do not talk to anybody no matter whether it is on-air or wherever in life when they are not rational, so you walk away."

“I’m not getting into this … This is like a domestic and nobody wins in a domestic."

“You can put your view as much as you like and I am not here to defend or whatever else."

“Everybody has a different personality. I am not in to conflict.”

Newman, who refused to believe he overreacted during the argument, asked, “Can we finally say that you’re not going to do the podcast anymore? Is that what’s going to happen?”

Scott replied, “That’s fine at the moment, no.”

Newman doubled down, saying, “This is history … This is breaking news. Don has now left the building, as Elvis has, and he’s not going to do the podcast anymore."

“This is another show of disgraceful behaviour from someone who is acting like a child … it’s beyond belief.”

Later on social media, Newman said that if Scott wasn't taking part in the podcast anymore, he wasn't sure how long they would continue with the show.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by John ‘Sam’ Newman (@originalsmartassam)

“Won’t do it without Don, and even if he reconsiders, it will not be the same. David Walliams' explosive new claims against BGT bosses

David Walliams has claimed he has suffered suicidal thoughts since being dropped as a judge from Britain's Got Talent, according to court documents.

The explosive claims have been documented in the high-profile case with the UK High Court, which began after Walliams was axed from the popular TV show following a leaking of a hot mic conversation.

The 52-year-old was unknowingly being recorded when he made vile comments about contestants, and was subsequently asked to leave the show after a decade on the judging panel.

Now, Walliams is suing Fremantle Media after they allegedly “recorded, transcribed and retained” private conversations for ten years from Walliams and the other judges on the show.

He alleges they collected private and sensitive details of conversations throughout his time on the family favourite series, and he claims fellow judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon were monitored the same way by production staff.

Walliams, who says he has suffered suicidal thoughts after being cancelled from public life, is seeking £1 million (A$1.9 million) he stood to get from the prime-time ITV show, plus £1.7 million (A$3.25 million) in lost earnings from the last year.

He wants an additional £3.4 million (A$6.5 million) covering future losses over at least the next two years, taking the total to £6.1 million (A$11.65 million).

In addition he is seeking further unspecified damages for psychiatric harm, distress and upset and the loss of control over his private information and legal costs, which sources say could bring the total up to as much as £10 million (A$19 million).

The court documents claim that Walliams was uninvited from an official royal event to read at the Commonwealth Writing Competition with Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace, after he was dropped from BGT.

He said in that time after he left the show, he has received only one new work booking, having “catastrophic results for his reputation and career”.

Walliams says he is now fighting “active suicidal thoughts” and has “lost the ability to be funny” amid fears that whatever he says or does will be used against him.

In the lengthy court documents, Walliams says the fallout destroyed his “reputation and career” as a comedian, TV personality and children’s author.

Buckingham Palace in ‘total lockdown’ due to 'loud explosion'

Buckingham Palace has been placed under lockdown after a man reportedly threw shotgun cartridges at the royal residence.

International and British media surrounding the palace grounds were evacuated from the area amid the security scare, and a man has since been arrested – with BBC news reporting a controlled explosion was executed by specialists as a precautionary measure.

Initial reports suggested King Charles was in residence during the incident, however, the Washington Post has confirmed he was just nearby with Queen Consort Camilla at Clarence House.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the man was found to be in possession of a suspicious bag and was arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon.

Speaking to news.com.au workers on the grounds said they heard a “loud bang” around 8pm. They also said the palace was not evacuated but surrounding media outside were cleared from the premises.

The Mall, the street which lines from the palace to Trafalgar Square, is cordoned off from the public. Police are telling people in the area that the road is blocked off for a scheduled coronation rehearsal.

British politician Jacob Rees-Mogg was in the area when the incident occurred and told GB News he was waiting to go on-air to discuss the upcoming coronation.

“People came to us using yellow tabards to say there was an incident and we all had to go. Just an element, of I fear, not ‘keep calm and carry on’ [but] ‘let’s hustle and bustle’.”

Ben Briscoe, GB News’ Head of Programming, also told the program, “There was definitely a very, very loud explosion … As it stands the Palace and the surrounding areas are in total lockdown and it doesn’t look like it is going to be lifted anytime soon.”

The royal standard, which signifies when the monarch is in residence, was not seen above the palace the following day but has since been erected on the roof.

The incident comes as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was one of the first dignitaries to meet the King ahead of the coronation, with his arrival at the palace on May 2.

It is believed the lockdown has since been lifted as investigations proceed.

Outrage at couple’s explosive gender reveal

Love them or hate them, gender reveals seem primed to stay. While some couples prefer to keep their unborn baby’s gender a surprise for loved ones, others are keen to share the news with the world. And in the age of the internet, many parents-to-be are committed to having the biggest event yet.

One couple has gone viral on TikTok for their reveal, but it hasn’t been the positive affair they’d hoped for, with many slamming them for putting lives in danger with their stunt.

In the clip, the excited pair are standing at sunset with their two daughters in front of a massive sign that lights up to read “oh baby”. Pink and blue balloons surround them all, while Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ plays over the video.

Mere seconds in, the sign erupts with fireworks, pink smoke, and confetti. The couple seem thrilled to have learned they’re expecting another girl, jumping around and cheering with their two young children.

Despite their elation, viewers did not share in their cause for celebration, instead noting the blatant danger of their outrageous display.

“This could have gone wrong on so many levels,” commented one viewer.

“Could have gone so wrong and regret forever,” agreed another.

“Forest fire core,” wrote one, referencing the more recent internet trend of adopting specific style aesthetics and declaring them ‘something-core’.

“Right underneath the very nonflammable eucalyptus trees,” someone else noted.

However, despite the very real risk, some simply enjoyed the spectacle. And in what was a cause for concern for many, a large number of viewers declared their desire to have a reveal just like it.

“If it takes all my life earnings to make my gender reveal like this,” one said, “then I will spend it in an instant.”

“This just motivated me to work harder in life cus this needs to be me,” came one response, among a sea of related comments about the cost of such an event.

Concerns over the couple’s stunt stem from a series of unfortunate results over the years, most notably from a similar incident in 2020, when a gender reveal in California was responsible for a bushfire that claimed 10,000 acres of land. In 2018, another couple’s reveal was the spark behind a 47,000-acre bushfire.

The bad news cycle surrounding such these events has even led to the woman credited with inventing the concept - blogger Jenna Karvunidis - to apologise for it.

Images: TikTok

Bum scare! Hospital evacuated over man with WWI explosive up his backside

A hospital has been evacuated after a senior citizen arrived with a World War One explosive lodged in his rectum.

The 88-year-old presented to the Hospital Sainte Musse in Toulon, France, to have the artillery removed, but instead triggered a "bomb scare" that saw the hospital partially evacuated.

“An emergency occurred from 9pm to 11.30pm on Saturday evening that required the intervention of bomb disposal personnel, the evacuation of adult and paediatric emergencies as well as the diversion of incoming emergencies,” a hospital spokesperson stated.

“We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework,” the rep added. “When in doubt, we took all the precautions.”

Bomb disposal experts at the scene believed there was little chance the bomb would explode inside the patient.

“They reassured us by telling us that it was a collector’s item from the First World War, used by the French military,” the hospital stated.

Stunned doctors subsequently began the process of trying to remove the object, which measured almost 20cm long and more than 5cm wide, from the man’s rectum.

“An apple, a mango, or even a can of shaving foam, we are used to finding unusual objects inserted where they shouldn’t be,” one doctor declared. “But a shell? Never!”

Medics were forced to take the elderly man into surgery, cutting open his abdomen in order to remove the antique relic.

According to the hospital, he is now in “good health” and is expected to make a full recovery from the surgery.

It’s been two years since the devastating port explosion that rocked Lebanon and saw the country slowly become even more poor.

The terrifying explosion killed 218 people, wounded 7,000 and damaged 77,000 apartments, displacing more than 300,000 people in the already struggling country.

Covid was well underway with hospitals already under pressure, but the explosion saw them suddenly overflowing with injured citizens desperate for help.

People are saying that the country’s stay-at-home orders saved lives which would have otherwise seen hundreds of thousands on the roads, at work and at the beach near the exploded port.

But two years on and the residents are still struggling through the worst economic crisis in 30 years.

Electricity runs for an hour a day unless you have a deal with electricity companies, there is also no running water, no bread, no gas, and much more.

And it’s only expected to get worse in winter when temperatures plummet and families struggle to keep their loved ones, particularly the elderly, warm.

Even putting food on the table has become more difficult with grocery prices soaring exponentially – almost 10 times what they were back in 2019. Families are being forced to ration and even resort to basics.

There have been several protests calling for an end to the widespread corruption and tax increases.

Will the politicians listen? Probably not, as this has been a long-running issue for Lebanon.

Despite all this heartache, Lebanon remains the Paris of the Middle East and is likened to a phoenix, a mythical bird that is born again from the ashes of its predecessor.

But what can we do to help Lebanon? Go and visit.

Lebanon’s economy continues to rely on tourism and is a stunning summer/spring destination.

Travellers will be in awe at the beauty of the Middle Eastern country which is constantly bringing Aussie tourists in.

From its capital city Beirut, to Byblos in the seaside of the north of the country, Tyre, also known as Sour (pronounced soor), Harissa and many more it is certainly the place to be.

It comes as the Lebanese Ministry of Tourism launched a tourism campaign to bring in Lebanese expats to come to the country during the 2022 summer season.

The campaign was dubbed “Ahla Bha Talle,” in reference to a song by late and prominent Lebanese singer Sabah.

So in reference to that TikTok video “Yallah come to Lebanon habibi” (Come to Lebanon my love).

Images: Twitter

"No interest in justice!" Andrew O'Keefe's courtroom explosion

Disgraced TV host Andrew O'Keefe has screamed at a magistrate in his latest court appearance, claiming he had “no interest in justice” and was threatened with contempt of court after he was again denied bail.

As O'Keefe fronted Sydney’s Central Local Court on Wednesday afternoon, he appeared visibly distressed and frustrated.

The 50-year-old was hit with six charges in January after police alleged that he grabbed a woman by the throat, punched her and pushed her to the ground, to which he pled not guilty to all charges.

Mr O’Keefe has been remanded in custody since his arrest and lost his last bid for bail in the NSW Supreme Court in March.

Defence lawyer Sharon Ramsden presented a fresh application for bail on Wednesday, in which she argued that more evidence had been served on Mr O’Keefe that outlined the “lack of injury” on the complainant.

Over the bail hearing that lasted almost two-hours, Mr O’Keefe was audibly frustrated over what was being said in court.

A prosecutor opposed the bail application and said there was “no new information” to warrant the request,

“There’s not fresh circumstances in what has been put before the court … he has been in rehab nine times,” he said.

Mr O’Keefe spoke over the prosecutor to deny the allegations as magistrate Daniel Reiss warned him he would be “going backwards by speaking up”.

“That’s simply not true Your Honour,” Mr O’Keefe said, raising his voice.

“I’m just getting the truth out there.”

Mr O’Keefe continued to interrupt and shake his head in frustration as magistrate Daniel Reiss told the court of the 50-year-old’s mental health and drug issues.

The magistrate warned that Mr O’Keefe was bordering on being in contempt of court.

“I’ve dealt with many defendants, some are psychotic and are not as hard to deal with as you. Someone with legal qualifications and 10 warnings should know how to deal with it,” Mr Reiss said.

Mr Reiss denied bail, saying he was not willing to allow the “unacceptable risk” of letting Mr O’Keefe leave custody.

Mr O’Keefe gathered his papers and stood up before saying, “The transcript will say I was not arguing, I was trying to help you Your Honour.”

“You have no interest in justice,” Mr O’Keefe continued before storming out.

Mr O’Keefe will return to court for a hearing in June.

I’ve had a very difficult time, like many people. It’s freedom of expression, and I’ll fight for it until the day I die.”

Angela Bishop noted that one of Tina's few stage performances in recent years was the February 2020 Firefight concert to raise money for those affected by the bushfires.

“It seems people have forgotten about the arts community when they’re in need,” Angela suggested, to which Arena agreed.

“If anything goes wrong, the artistic community has always lifted their sleeves up."

"We’ve gone in there and done what we needed to do. We’re very happy to play that role to help people – it’s what we do,” said Arena.

“Now we’re in trouble, is someone helping us? Lisa Wilkinson slams Gladys Berejiklian in explosive rant

The Project's Lisa Wilkinson couldn't hide her fury at NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and her lack of communication over the latest NSW lockdown rules.

Host Waleed Aly agreed with Wilkinson, saying that history was starting to repeat itself.

“It reminds me so much of the situation in Melbourne last year where you had people from low-income areas with insecure work that couldn’t take time off to get tested and it was only after the outbreak reached those points where people went, oh my God, that is a bit of a problem,” he said.

“I don’t understand why lessons aren’t being learned? Is it just too hard or they aren’t watching to see what the lessons are? I’m genuinely confused by this?” he concluded.

Wilkinson placed the blame on the NSW Premier, saying that her relaxed stance is what's causing the COVID-19 cases to spike.

“I think everybody in Sydney is it confused as well,” she admitted.

“Right from the beginning of this, Gladys Berejiklian was refusing to call it a lockdown and that was the most important moment of communication.

“We all knew, and still know, that the Delta variant is so much more transmissible and she never adopted a stance that made it look like she was taking this more seriously, but she had every reason to.”

“She had the Prime Minister at the same time saying, Gladys is the gold standard of how you do these sorts of lockdowns, and so Sydney has kind of been confused and it’s no surprise to anybody that the numbers are the way they are. The word I’m hearing a lot from my Sydney friends that they are ‘confused’.”

Bad news out of Sydney, with overnight community transmission cases the highest in over a year. Today police announced a major compliance operation in the South-West, as authorities struggle to contain the Delta variant.#TheProjectTV pic.twitter.com/V1oPmGOeux
— The Project (@theprojecttv) July 8, 2021

Berejiklian has become a bit more clear with her wording, revealing that the only way the lockdown can end the extended lockdown is that if every person does the right thing.

As 38 new cases were recorded in NSW on Thursday, anxieties are high within the state and the lockdown was extended by another week.

It will now end on the 21st of July instead of the 16th like originally planned.

“I want to say in the most, strongest possible terms, please, please avoid contact with other households, please avoid visiting family and friends because you are not allowed to,” Berejiklian warned at a press conference.

“When we talk about providing care or compassion, we are talking about one person visiting someone who might be isolated, dropping off essential services or goods.

“We are not talking about visiting extended family members, we’re not talking visiting friends.

“Data over the last few days shows this is how the virus is spreading. The saddest message out of all of that is that people with the virus are passing it on to those they love the most.”

Ben Roberts-Smith makes explosive claims about mistress

Ben Roberts-Smith believed his former girlfriend was "manipulating" him by faking a pregnancy so he sent a private investigator to follow her to an abortion clinic, a court has heard.

The high profile soldier has denied hitting the woman after a glamorous party in Canberra, telling the Federal Court that the allegation "ruined my life".

On Tuesday afternoon, Mr Roberts-Smith detailed how he had started a relationship with a woman known as Person 17 a few weeks after separating from his wife in late 2017.

Around Christmas, he said, Person 17’s husband called him and made “bizarre” comments.

“(Person 17’s husband) was aware we were having a relationship,” Mr Roberts-Smith said.

“He thought Person 17 would be better off with me... It was quite a bizarre phone call.”

In January 2018, Mr Roberts-Smith said he visited Singapore with his wife and children to try and discuss whether their marriage should continue.

The retired soldier told his wife about Person 17 and he promised to break it off so he could rejoin his family.

Mr Roberts-Smith said he told Person 17 their relationship needed to end and, the month after, she sent him worrying messages while on a family holiday of her own in London.

Mr Robert-Smith told the court he concluded Person 17 was about to self-harm, she didn't speak to him for over 24 hours even after her panicked husband called.

Eventually Mr Roberts-Smith got Person 17 on the phone, he said.

“My response was that she needed to go home to let her husband know she was all right... She needed to go be with her kids,” he said.

That same month, Person 17 told Mr Roberts-Smith she was pregnant and they decided to terminate, he told the court.

He went on to say Person 17 flew to Brisbane so she could visit a hospital clinic and he could take care of her after the invasive procedure.

But he said he didn't believe she was pregnant and sent private investigator John McLeod to tail Person 17 to the hospital clinic.

Mr Roberts-Smith said Mr McLeod sent him a video of Person 17 leaving the hospital looking fine and carrying her own bag.

But she arrived at their hotel meeting point looking “frail” and with a bandage on her arm where a drip might have gone.

Mr Roberts-Smith said he showed her the video of her leaving hospital and her reaction was “enough to make me realise she wasn’t telling me the truth”.

“She started to cry and said ‘I didn’t have the procedure, I had the procedure up in Townsville’,” Mr Roberts-Smith told the court.

“I said ‘Townsville doesn’t have a clinic’ she said ‘I had a miscarriage’ so now I had three stories as to what was going on.”

“(It) gave me great concern that I was being manipulated so I’d stay in the relationship.”

The SAS veteran strongly denied striking Person 17 at a hotel room in Canberra following a glitzy dinner with the Prime Minister weeks later.

He told the court Person 17 had been so drunk she fell down the stairs in Parliament House and he took her home to ice her head.

Nine alleged Mr Roberts-Smith had struck her after she complained about the pain in her head from the staircase fall.

He denied that.

“My mother and father brought me up with a good set of values… l have no tolerance for anyone who would raise a hand against a woman. I find it a disgusting act of cowardice,” he said.

Mr Roberts-Smith is suing Nine for allegations he committed war crimes in Afghanistan and that he assaulted Person 17.

“That particular allegation (of assault,) I feel, coupled with being called a war criminal, ruined my life,” Mr Roberts-Smith said.

“For a long time I found it really difficult to leave the house after that.”

Mr Roberts-Smith said he spoke with Person 17 after she fell down the stairs about how he knew her husband would believe she’d been hit.

“I said to her ‘(your husband) is going to think I’ve struck you, you’re going to have to tell him you fell down the stairs and we were together’,” he said.

Mr Roberts-Smith said it was the final straw for their relationship but he saw Person 17 once more, in Brisbane.

He told the court she saw him board a flight to Canberra and he later realised Person 17 had booked a hire car to drive to his marital home.

The soldier said he only realised that when his wife texted him to say Person 17 had showed up at their door.

Mr Roberts-Smith claimed there was a "whispering campaign" between journalists Chris Masters and Nick McKenzie and members of the SAS.

He then said he feared his phone was tapped by the media or by specialist soldiers.

He said he again turned to Mr McLeod and asked him to find the home addresses of six individuals so he could alert the Department of Defence they were illegally speaking with journalists.

“I wanted to be able to provide that information to Defence so they could take the appropriate action and stop them talking to the media,” he told the court.

Mr Roberts-Smith denied intimidating any of the former SAS soldiers, or surveilling them.

He explicitly denied having Mr McLeod send threatening letters to one soldier in particular, as alleged by Nine.
