Man who saved the lives of over 2 million babies dies aged 88

James Harrison OAM, the famous Australian blood donor who saved the lives of 2.4 million babies by donating his rare plasma, has died aged 88.

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has confirmed that Harrison died "peacefully" on February 17 at Peninsula Village Nursing Home on the NSW Central Coast.

Harrison, also known as the Man with the Golden Arm, began donating in the 1950s became the world's most prolific blood and plasma donor thanks to his rare antibody, Anti-D, which helps mothers who are at risk of passing on deadly antibodies to their babies.

Since he started donating at the age of 18, Harrison has donated 1173 times, continuing his kind act up until his retirement in 2018 aged 81.

His family have since paid tribute to him, with his daughter Tracey Mellowship, remembering him as a generous soul.

"James was a humanitarian at heart, but also very funny," she said.

"In his last years, he was immensely proud to become a great grandfather to two beautiful grandchildren, Trey and Addison.

"As an Anti-D recipient myself, he has left behind a family that may not have existed without his precious donations."

Lifeblood Chief Executive Officer Stephen Cornelissen added that Harrison's impact has made a difference all around the world.

"James was a remarkable, stoically kind, and generous person who was committed to a lifetime of giving and he captured the hearts of many people around the world," Cornelissen said.

"It was James' belief that his donations were no more important than any other donors', and that everyone can be special in the same way that he was.

"James extended his arm to help others and babies he would never know a remarkable 1173 times and expected nothing in return."

"He leaves behind an incredible legacy, and it was his hope that one day, someone in Australia would beat his donation record," he added.

"On behalf of Lifeblood, and the entire Australian community, we thank James for the incredible life- saving contribution he made and the millions of lives he saved."

Harrison's rare blood and plasma may continue to save lives even after his death, with researches hoping they would be able to use his blood to develop lab-grown Anti-D.

Image: Nine News

Princess Diana's former lover opens up in rare interview

Army Major James Hewitt, who had a five-year affair with the late Princess Diana from 1986, has spoken about the royal in a rare television interview with Good Morning Britain on Tuesday.

When asked about whether he thinks Diana may have been able to reunite her sons, who have barely spoken in five years, he replied: "I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, as you put it."

"And she'd do her best to try and get them together."

Major Hewitt, who now spends his time doing aid work in Ukraine, revealed that the last time he had spoken to the late Princess was "just after" her BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir in November 1995, during which she admitted to their affair.

He described the conversation as "distant" and admitted that the interview did "create problems" for him from which he was "trying to move on".

After the affair was revealed, Major Hewitt was labelled as a "love rat" by the tabloid media and found his reputation in ruins.

He also said that the interview was "very distressing" for the late Princess, as someone she had trusted had used their connection to make money.

"It was a stitch-up job," he said of the Panorama interview.

"It was appalling of Bashir to [have] inveigled, lied to her, criminal activity, absolutely appalling."

"As I've said, I hate bullies and bullying and arrogant people and I think it's appalling."

Major Hewitt, who was Diana's riding instructor at the time, has previously denied claiming to have been a "father figure" to the princes but has said that he "played with them, swam with them, taught them to ride".

The Duke of Sussex had also addressed the rumours that Major Hewitt was his biological father in his memoir Spare, saying that he felt the rumours were designed to turn him into a "laughing stock".

"One cause of the rumour was Major Hewitt's red hair, but another was sadism," he wrote in his memoir.

Image: Ken McKay/ITV/ Shutterstock Editorial

Prince William’s heartbreaking call after Kate's cancer diagnosis

A former aide to the Prince of Wales has revealed that he was at his "lowest" after his wife Princess Kate was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago.

In an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Jason Knauf, who was the chief executive of William and Kate’s Royal Foundation, revealed the phone call he shared with the Prince of Wales, after Kate's cancer diagnosis last year.

"It was awful, absolutely awful. It's the lowest I've ever seen him.

"Within a couple of weeks, if you're Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer. I couldn't believe it."

Princess Kate is now in remission, while King Charles receives ongoing treatment.

The Princess of Wales' diagnosis was made public in March last year, with Knauf recalling: “But the problem was that all this crazy conspiracy theory stuff kicked off in the background, online. ‘Was she really ill?’.

“But they didn’t want to say yet that she had cancer because they hadn’t told the children and they were still working through how to tell the children.”

Knauf stepped down from his position at the end of 2021. He also previously worked for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as their communications secretary.

The Prince of Wales previously told reporters at the end of his visit to South Africa in November last year, that 2024 had been “the hardest year" of his life.

"Honestly? It's been dreadful. It's probably been the hardest year in my life. So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult," he told the BBC at the time.

“But I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been brutal.”

Image: 60 Minutes/ Instagram

Man whose partner lost $1.6 BILLION at a rubbish tip now wants to buy the entire dump

In what can only be described as the most expensive game of "Where’s Wally?" ever attempted, James Howells, 39, is continuing his decade-long battle to recover a hard drive that contains 8,000 bitcoins – now worth a staggering $1.6 billion AUD – from a landfill site in Newport on the southwest coast of Wales.

The saga began in 2013 when Howells’ partner, in a move that will forever be known as the most expensive spring cleaning mishap of all time, accidentally tossed out the hard drive. Since then, Howells has been on a mission to reclaim his digital treasure from what is now essentially a very smelly version of Fort Knox.

However, Newport City Council has repeatedly refused his requests to excavate the site, citing environmental concerns and, possibly, an extreme reluctance to deal with a man on a personal mission to unearth a high-tech pirate's chest. A recent legal bid to force the council’s hand was swiftly dismissed by the UK High Court, with the judge describing Howells’ plight as "akin to looking for a needle in a haystack" – though in this case, the haystack is 1.4 million tonnes of garbage, and the needle is worth more than most small countries’ GDP.

But Howells refuses to be deterred. His latest plan? If he can’t dig through the dump, he’ll just buy it.

Yes, the father-of-three is now looking to purchase the landfill site outright, a bold strategy that has left both financial analysts and waste management professionals scratching their heads. “I have discussed this option recently with investment partners, and it is very much on the table,” he told the BBC.

This development adds a fascinating twist to the drama, as parts of the landfill are slated to be turned into a solar farm in the coming years. In what might be the most ironic plot twist in financial history, the very place where Howells’ fortune lies buried could soon be used to power the homes of Newport – while he continues to live in metaphorical darkness.

“If they had just worked with me, Newport could have looked like Las Vegas or Dubai,” Howells lamented, apparently envisioning a city built on the back of Bitcoin-funded extravagance rather than well-placed street lamps and reliable waste collection.

Despite his enthusiasm, Newport City Council remains unswayed. “Excavation is not possible under our environmental permit,” a council spokesman reiterated, likely while rolling his eyes for the hundredth time. “Mr Howells’s claim has no merit, and the council is vigorously resisting it.”

Undeterred, Howells insists he has a team of AI experts ready to streamline the search, making the job “as easy as possible”.

As things stand, it appears that for now, Newport’s garbage will remain just that – garbage. But if one thing is certain, it’s that Howells is not giving up anytime soon.

Whether his future includes billions in Bitcoin riches or simply a very expensive pile of rubbish remains to be seen.

Image: Supplied

Former investigator's candid William Tyrrell admission

Gary Jubelin, the former lead investigator of the William Tyrrell case, has admitted that he is still obsessed with the toddler's disappearance a decade after the child went missing.

Jubelin was removed from the case after illegally recording a then-suspect Paul Savage in 2017 and 2018. He quit the force in 2019 and was prosecuted and convicted and lost his subsequent appeal.

He recently spoke out on Stellar magazine's podcast, Something To Talk About, and revealed that he cannot let the case go, despite his removal from the official investigation.

"I am still passionate about the William Tyrrell matter. I can't let it go," he said.

"There was criticism of things I did. I still stand by what I did. The courts have criticised me.

"I've got to accept the findings of the court. But I also believe the courts are only as good as the information that's been provided to them."

His comments come after an inquest examined the three-year-old's disappearance from his foster grandmother's home at Kendall, NSW in September 2014.

Jubelin also called out the unconfirmed police theory that they believed William's foster mother was involved in the three-year-old's disappearance.

"When I was running the investigation, I had another look at the family, and there was a strike force to explore some aspects of it, very vigorously had a look at the family again, overt and covert investigative techniques.

"I came away from that very confident that the foster mother and foster father had no involvement in William's disappearance.

"The foster mother gave evidence in support of me at my hearing and was also critical of senior police.

"Then she becomes a person of interest after she criticised senior police, and that's been leaked to the media.

"Something about this does not feel right."

He added: "I can't let it go, I won't let it go, and it's not me losing perspective, and it's not me trying to justify my position. I think we - and I'm still including myself as a police officer in this term - should be judged on the way that investigation was handled.

"I don't know how the public could possibly have confidence in what's going on.

"There was a coronial inquest, and we've heard the commissioner for police say there's only one suspect, pointing the finger at the foster mother, and there is no evidence to support that.

"You can't make allegations like that."

He also said that he believed the public has a right to be critical of the investigation.

"In terms of closure, I think there really needs to be some line of inquiry over what's happened with that investigation.

"I'm not seeing things come out at the inquest that I thought were relevant.

"A young child has disappeared, and that shouldn't get lost in all the politics and infighting. We all should be working in the same direction to bring some closure."

Jubelin admitted that his removal from the Tyrrell investigation "hurt me more than losing my career."

"I'd made the commitment to William Tyrrell's family, foster and biological, I'd do whatever was humanly possible."

Image: NSW Police

Prince William and Kate have released their annual Christmas card.

After a difficult year for the royal family, Prince William and Kate shared the poignant card to social media on Friday morning.

The royal couple shared a clip of the card sitting open on a table in front of a lit-up Christmas tree and surrounded by fake snow, with the message inside the card reading: "Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year."

The image used in the Christmas card was taken earlier this year from a video that marked the end of Kate's chemotherapy treatment. It shows Prince Louis, Prince William, Kate, Princess Charlotte and Prince George all sitting arm-in-arm together in Norfolk last summer.

The happy family are seen smiling broadly and the reason why they chose this photo was to highlight their family-first focus this year.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincessofwales)

Prince and William and Kate have already posted out their Christmas card to family, friends and the couple's charities.

The release of the card comes after A Kensington Palace source told UK news outlets that the royal couple have skipped the Buckingham Palace Christmas luncheon for the first time, as they had travel plans and it was not a last-minute change.

The royal couple are reportedly already in their Norfolk home with their three kids and are said to be looking forward to celebrating Christmas Day with their family in Sandringham.

Image: Instagram/ Kensington Palace

Former top cop's shocking William Tyrrell call

The former NSW police commissioner has made a sobering call about the future of the William Tyrrell investigation.

In an exclusive interview with news.com.au podcast Witness: William Tyrrell, former police commissioner Mick Fuller said that despite running an "extremely professional investigation”, he was doubtful if the case would ever be solved.

“It was never going to be easy to solve and maybe it won’t get solved this time,” he said.

“But, you know, people won’t give up … there are new police coming through that will take over this case from (current lead detective) Dave Laidlaw at some stage, and there’ll be another fresh set of eyes there.”

William Tyrrell was just three years old when he disappeared from his foster grandmother's home in Kendall, NSW on September 12th 2014.

No one has been charged or arrested in connection to his disappearance, and the team investigating the case Strike Force Rosann has recovered no forensic or eye witness evidence to indicate what happened to the child.

At the time of Fuller's retirement in 2022, Detective Chief Inspector Mr Laidlaw was brought in to lead a refreshed Strike Force into Tyrrell's disappearance.

At the time, Fuller told 2GB the group assembled was “one of the best teams we’ve seen” and was hopeful of a breakthrough in the investigation.

Speaking with news.com.au, Mr Fuller said, “I would love to say that this matter was solved before I retired.”

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t. And sometimes it takes 30, 40 years for these type of matters to be solved,” he said. “And unfortunately, then sometimes they’re never solved.”

Former William Tyrrell suspect changes story

Paul Savage, an 80-year-old pensioner who was once questioned by detectives over the disappearance of William Tyrrell, has shared a different version of his actions to what he previously told police.

Savage told news.com.au's podcast on the case Witness: William Tyrrell, that he spotted part of a child’s Spider-Man costume – matching the one William was famously last seen wearing – a day earlier than he had reported to police.

In 2017, detectives ran a covert surveillance operation while Savage was being pursued as a person of interest. At the time, they set up a Spider Man suit on the bushtrack the pensioner walked each day near his Benaroon Dr home.

On the first day of the sting, the surveillance team saw him stop and look in the direction of the suit for 12 seconds before continuing on.

Detectives believed Savage had seen the suit, but he insisted that he did not see it until the second day it was there, saying: “I’ve never seen it the day before.

“Why would I leave it a day and then go down and ring up? Why would I do that?”

The 80-year-old has now told news.com.au that he did see part of the suit on the first day, but as it was only the top, he wasn't sure if it was William's and thought to himself “I don’t know about that”, he claimed.

On the second day when he said he saw the whole suit, Savage "thought it was probably his [William's]."

When asked why he didn't tell police of his sighting on the first day, he told the podcast: “I’ve left it a bit longer than I should have but it will come out eventually.”

The podcast also revealed the secret police recordings made inside the pensioner's house, which were previously tendered in court.

The police had been listening in to a bug in Savage's home and car for several weeks and continued to use audio surveillance on him until November 2017 following his police interview.

Savage, who had lost his wife in his mid 70s, would often speak to himself or appeared to be talking to her. In one of the recordings after the police interview, he was recorded saying: "Make sure you don’t tell anyone, Love,” the court heard.

“They’re right after me. Don’t tell anyone, Love. Please, they’re right after me. Sorry,” he continued.

At other times he was heard saying: “I couldn’t hurt a kid,” and later “You’re sick. You bastards want to pin it on me. You can’t do your job so you want to pin it on me."

Savage, who lives across the road from where William vanished, has never been charged and denies any knowledge of what happened to him.

He also told the publication that police had not formally spoken with him after former lead detective Gary Jubelin, who questioned him, was taken off the case.

He has never been officially informed whether he is still a person of interest in their investigation.

Images: news.com.au

"Stern warning": William Tyrrell's foster mother abused outside court

William Tyrrell's foster mother has been targeted in wild scenes outside court as she left the inquest into the child's disappearance, as another woman was seen "hurling abuse at her".

When leaving court on Monday afternoon, the woman, who is unable to be named, was abused and heckled by an unknown female, as Counsel Assisting Gerard Craddock SC informed NSW Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame.

"There is no place in civil society for that at all," he told the inquiry. "It is particularly terrible in these circumstances."

He asked the coroner to "remind people in attendance that orderly conduct is required. That sort of conduct could amount to being punishable by contempt of court".

Coroner Grahame said, "That is very disappointing. If that person is in this court now they should be warned (the court) can take action."

"That sort of behaviour must not occur. I'm just disturbed by that sort of behaviour. I use a stern warning. Please behave."

The incident was revealed at the beginning of the second day of the resumed inquest into the disappearance of the three-year-old boy 10 years ago.

The inquest is probing the police theory that William Tyrell's foster mother buried his body in bushland after he fell from a balcony and died on the morning he vanished from Kendall, on the NSW mid north coast, in September 2014.

New “corpse disposal” theory tested in William Tyrrell inquest

A police theory that William Tyrrell's foster mother unlawfully disposed of the child's body after he died of an accident is set to be put before the court in an inquest into Tyrrell's disappearance.

On Monday, counsel assisting Gerard Craddock SC reopened the inquest for a fifth round of evidence, saying the focus would be on the viability of the theory that William's body was purposefully disposed of.

Police have alleged that after the then three-year-old died on the Kendall property on the mid-north NSW coast in September 2014, the foster mum might have loaded his body into her mother’s Mazda before driving down the road to dispose of his remains.

Deputy NSW coroner Harriet Grahame heard in court that it was only then that she may have called triple zero to report the child missing.

“Police assert that she must have quickly resolved that if the accidental death were to be discovered, she might lose (her other foster child),” Craddock said.

Tyrrell's foster mother has long denied having any involvement with William's disappearance.

Later in the inquest, evidence is set to be given from a truck driver who drove past where the foster mother allegedly disposed of the body at the time.

The inquest into William’s disappearance began in March 2019 but was adjourned in October 2020.

No one has been charged and a $1 million reward for information stands.

Major twist in probe into water polo coach's death

A probe into the tragic death of a water polo coach at St Andrew's Cathedral School has revealed an astonishing twist in the investigation.

Lilie James, 21, was found dead inside a gymnasium bathroom at the Sydney school on October 25th last year, as police issued a warrant for Paul Thijssen's arrest in connection to her death.

A school staffer let police officers into the building at Town Hall Square, where Lilie's "unrecognisable" body was found, left with "serious head injuries".

In the days after Lilie's death, police established a second crime scene at The Gap in Sydney's east where they recovered Thijssen's body.

Now, as a probe into her death continues, insiders have revealed to Daily Mail Australia that St Andrews Cathedral School principal Dr Julie McGonigle has been told the school will not be considered an "interested party" at the coronial inquiry into the deaths.

The exclusion comes despite teachers and students having intimate knowledge and involvement with Ms James and school hockey coach Thijssen prior to the murder, and school staff having assisted in the discovery of the horrific crime scene.

School principal Dr McGonigle revealed in her latest Head of School Newsletter that "at this stage, the State Coroner does not consider St Andrew's Cathedral School to have sufficient interest in this matter to be considered an interested party, pursuant to the Coroners Act".

The inquest into the deaths of Lilie Anne James and Paul Thomas Stephan Thijssen will be held over three days from March 18th next year.

"Police have done nothing": William Tyrrell's foster mother speaks out

William Tyrrell's foster mother has issued a rare statement, slamming the police investigation into the disappearance of the toddler.

In her first public comments in two years, the woman - who cannot be identified - has been insistent on denying any involvement in William's disappearance despite being at the centre of a dedicated Strike Force team.

She claimed police had “gone to great lengths to blacken my character in the media” as they built a case against her, since she was publicly outed as the current person of interest for Strike Force Rosann detectives in 2021.

As news.com.au continue their investigative podcast into William's disappearance and the subsequent investigation, the foster mother has slammed the authorities for the way they have handled the high-profile case.

She said, “I believe that if the police had properly investigated this case, instead of persecuting me, they may well have found the person responsible for William’s disappearance.”

She went on to reiterate she believes the three-year-old was taken from her mother’s yard in Kendall in September of 2014 and that she has “no idea who took William, or what happened to him”.

“For the past five years, the police have done nothing to try to discover who took William, and what has happened to him," she said.

“Instead, they have concentrated all their efforts on trying to build a case that I was in some way to blame for his death, and the disposal of his precious little body."

“They have gone to great lengths to blacken my character in the media.”

She went on to say she loved William “as much as any mother could love her child … if not more”.

She said, “It did not matter one bit that he was not connected to us biologically. William made my life complete; I loved him fiercely.
