“How can you put your hand up to be leader?”: David Koch gives verbal smackdown to Chris Bowen

Sunrise host David Koch gave a reality check to Labor leadership hopeful Chris Bowen regarding his role in the Labor party’s disappointing election result.

Koch was interviewing Bowen on Wednesday morning, when he asked the Shadow Treasurer if he was “tarnished” by Labor’s performance in Saturday's Federal Election.

“A lot of people are saying that it was your tax reform that lost the unloseable election,” Koch told Mr Bowen.

Bowen claimed full responsibility, saying:

"I claim full responsibility for all the policies I was involved in, for what we got right and for what people may say we got wrong," Mr Bowen said.

Labor leadership contender @BowenChris admits that his campaign comment "if you don't like our policies, don't vote for us" could have been worded better. pic.twitter.com/BWTMTrrPhS
— Sunrise (@sunriseon7) 21 May 2019

Koch wasn’t happy with that response and asked a brutal follow up question.

“Tax reform has never won anyone an election. History says it is the kiss of death. You went in with a massive tax reform agenda, not that we don't need it.

“Franking credit reforms, you frightened the pants off so many retirees and families. How can you then put your hand up to be leader?"

Koch added, “Honest losers never get into power. That is the problem with politics.”

Bowen said that he believed that Labor’s policies were “right for this election” despite the loss.

Shadow Treasurer @BowenChris makes his case for Labor leadership and denies a radical tax agenda lost his party the election. pic.twitter.com/jGvdRJbAU9
— Sunrise (@sunriseon7) 21 May 2019

"Clearly, we respect the verdict of the Australian people. They do not like what we put forward, but we also paid a price for things that weren't our policy," Mr Bowen said.

“There was an alleged death tax... this was an invention by the Liberal Party and I think they cost us a lot of votes as we tried to bat away that scare campaign."

Bowen continued, “Kochie, I would not be part of a political party that was dishonest with the Australian people. We believe that those plans were right for this election and we tell people about it.”

Koch suggested that Labor could “end up being in Opposition for a long time”.

“A lot of people didn't like your comment during the campaign where you said 'don't vote for us if you don't like our policies'' – well, they took your advice,” Koch said.

“What I was trying to say there was that we had the courage to put our policies out for the Australian people to judge. We were not hiding them,” Mr Bowen clarified.

“I could have worded that sentence better to make it clearer, but we are certainly not trying to show disrespect to anybody and I think that was taken out of context by the Liberal Party on purpose, but I take responsibility for my words.”

“I can’t bear them”: The one piece of furniture House Rules judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen hates

As House Rules’ judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen reaches his third year as a judge on the renovation reality show, the English interior designer has seen it all.

As he’s known on the show for his cutting honesty, there’s always one piece of furniture that he’s stayed mum about.

However, he’s had enough. Llewelyn-Bowen, 54, has admitted that he hates coffee tables.

In his 17th century country manor, you won’t find one in sight.

“I don’t use coffee tables at all,” he explained to The New Daily.

“I can’t bear them. They end up being repositories of stuff because they’re there.”

“A coffee table ends up being this big pile of schizzle in the middle of a sitting room. It’s irrelevant. Useless. Why bother?”

For those of you who enjoy your coffee tables, don’t stress. There are ways to revamp your home without spending a bomb on new furniture.

The House Rules judge suggests piling all your furniture in the middle of the room and then “play around and see what sticks and what gets thrown out.”

“Be decisive. Rooms can end up stagnating slightly, but one mistake is this obsession with the total renovation,” he suggests.

“The total makeover is not necessarily always the best thing to do at all. Something in between moving stuff around and the makeover … having a big rethink is a very good way of doing it.”

However, if you think his home is devoid of life, that’s where you’d be wrong.

“It’s not about a contrived, controlled design experience, it’s much more easygoing,” he explains.

“You can be way too house proud. When you take out all the germs, your house stops being a living organism.”

As Llewelyn-Bowen lives in Gloucestershire in the UK, he has a very famous neighbour “just around the corner”.

Who is it? The Duchess of Cornwall.

“I love Camilla. The first time I ever got introduced she was holding my hand, and looked me up and down and went, ‘He-llo.’ It was like a Carry On film,” he said with excitement.

“Celebration of Life” dance brings together aged care residents for night of fun

The “Celebration of Life” dance last Wednesday saws hundreds of aged care residents, staff, volunteers, family and friends come together to kick up their heels (and wheels) to celebrate positive ageing.

Paul Brophy, manager of the Brotherhood of St Laurence Sambell Lodge aged care residence in Clifton Hill, has organised the biannual event since 2006. This year saw 300 people from the Sambell Lodge aged care residence and 20 other aged care organisations converge at Collingwood Town Hall for a night of fun at the Rio Carnival themed celebration.

“It’s a big collaboration. I work with people from aged care organisations far and wide. This year we had people from Preston, Northcote, Camberwell, Balwyn, South Melbourne, South Yarra, St Kilda…everyone wants to get on board when they hear about it,” Mr Brophy said. “It’s also a chance to bring together people from different cultural communities - the Greek community, the Chinese community, the Indigenous community.”

Celebrity priest Father Bob Maguire opened the event and it wasn’t long before the 27-piece big band got people on their feet, walking frames and in their wheelchairs to the dance floor.

“It’s about time we got on the front foot and promoted positive ageing, and there’s no better way than people in wheelchairs dancing,” Mr Brophy said. “There’s a tidal wave of baby boomers who are retiring and are about to enter aged care residences, so it’s important to recognise that and support them to age well."

Scroll through the gallery above to see the delightful photos of the event.

Related links:

This couple won’t let Alzheimer’s erase 70 years of love

Beautiful photo series captures the pain of dementia

New research links Alzheimer's risk with negative thoughts about ageing
