You can now reserve exit row seats for a fee

You can now ensure you get a little extra leg room on a flight. But you’ve got to be willing to pay for it.

Last week, Qantas announced it will let passengers reserve the extra legroom seat options on all all Qantas domestic B737 and A330 flights.

The option is already available on Qantas’ domestic east-west services and international medium and long haul flights.

The seats in economy located in an exit row are known for “extra legroom”. An exit row seat gives you about an extra three inches’ legroom but will cost you between $20 and $60 to reserve the space. Remember, you must also be capable of handling the exit row duties in case of an emergency.

Previously, these seats on short flights were given on a first come basis. Now, you can pay for the privilege.

“Making our ‘extra legroom’ option available to more customers across our network facilitates a fairer seat selection process, with the allocation of seats which have additional legroom space better reflecting the fee paid. This is the same basic principle that applies in the rest of the aircraft,” Qantas executive manager of sales and distribution, Vanessa Hudson said of the announcement.

“The option has been popular with our customers on longer domestic and international routes, and it now means customers can guarantee their preference of a seat with additional legroom on domestic and short-haul international flights.”

Aussie carrier Virgin Australia already allows guest to reserve exit row seats for a fee. On domestic flights, it will cost you between $20-$70. For long-haul international flights, these seats cost around $150.
