“England’s greatest ever”: Sir Bobby Charlton’s cause of death

In the early hours of Saturday morning October 21, the footballing world was met with sombre news. England World Cup winner and Manchester United great, Sir Bobby Charlton, described by the club as a "giant of the game", had passed away. Charlton's death marked the end of an era for both English football and Manchester United Football Club, and his legacy will continue to shine as brightly as ever.

Charlton had been battling dementia, and his passing came just a week after he celebrated his 86th birthday. His journey through the beautiful game was a storied one, filled with remarkable achievements that will forever etch his name in the annals of football history.

Perhaps the pinnacle of Charlton's career was his role in England's victorious 1966 World Cup team. He was a vital cog in the squad that claimed England's first and, so far, only World Cup triumph. His skills, determination, and sportsmanship on the pitch endeared him to fans not only in England but around the world.

But his influence didn't stop at the international level. At club level, Charlton enjoyed tremendous success with Manchester United. He played a significant role in the Red Devils becoming the first English club to lift the European Cup in 1968. This victory came a decade after the tragic Munich air crash, which claimed the lives of several members of the United team. Bobby Charlton's resilience and commitment to the club were instrumental in rebuilding and achieving such remarkable heights.

Upon hearing the news of Charlton's passing, the footballing community united in mourning. England World Cup winner Geoff Hurst, who scored a historic hat-trick in the 1966 final with Charlton by his side, expressed his sorrow and paid tribute to his "great colleague and friend." The sentiment was echoed by former Manchester United star David Beckham, who revealed that Sir Bobby Charlton had a profound influence on his career, going so far as to say that he was named after the legend himself – with his father giving him the second name "Robert" after his idol at the time.

Charlton's impact extended beyond the field, as noted by former England forward Gary Lineker, who dubbed him "England's greatest ever player." Charlton's class and sportsmanship both on and off the pitch made him an enduring symbol of the beautiful game. He represented the essence of what it meant to be a footballing legend.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville recognised Charlton as the club's "greatest ambassador." His contributions to the Red Devils, both as a player and later as a club director, played a significant role in shaping the club's legacy. He was a constant presence in the dressing room, offering his support and wisdom, win or lose.

For Rio Ferdinand, Sir Bobby Charlton was a "true gentleman" and "Mr Manchester United." He recounted a pivotal moment when Charlton shared words with him at the bottom of the stairs in Moscow before lifting the Champions League trophy in 2008. Those words will forever remain with Ferdinand, a testament to the profound impact Charlton had on those around him.

Charlton's legacy also reached beyond the United Kingdom, with global football icon Eric Cantona paying his respects, hailing him as "one of the best of all time". Current Manchester United midfielder Casemiro acknowledged Charlton's Ballon d'Or and European Cup victories, highlighting his irreplaceable role in the club's storied history.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak added his voice to the chorus of tributes, recognising Sir Bobby Charlton's place in history as one of the game's greatest players. He described Charlton as "hugely loved" and offered his condolences, saying, "Rest in peace, Sir Bobby."

"Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club," the Premier League club said in a statement. "Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.

"He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer. Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game."

Images: Getty Images

"If I die young": Mum's heartbreaking note to her children before shock death

A mother has tragically passed away on her 36th birthday from a mystery illness while on a family camping trip.

Hayley Thompson, from Manchester in the UK, had not long opened her birthday presents when she became unwell on the trip in Devon.

The mother then went to the bathroom, where she suddenly fell to the floor and suffered three seizures.

Paramedics were called, and Hayley was pronounced dead at the scene.

As her family grieves their loss, they have revealed Hayley posted a TikTok telling her daughter Ciana exactly what to do if she “died young” just months before her death.

The note reads “If I die young… Give my jewellery to my baby.”

“Know that I was happy. Everyone is to wear yellow to the funeral.”

“No suits or ties, I want FULL yellow suits or dresses. I want a DJ at the after-party. If anyone calls it a wake you’re barred.”

“Remind Kiana and Adam everyday how special they made my existence. I love my family, never forget.”

“Wherever you see sunflowers I will be there.”

While Hayley’s family knew she had been unwell in the recent years before her death, none of her loved ones had any idea who serious her condition was.

In 2016, Hayley was admitted to hospital where doctors discovered she had scarring on her liver, but could not find the cause.

After several more visits, Hayley was placed on the waiting list for a liver transplant.

What her family didn’t know was that without a transplant, her mysterious condition was fatal.

Hayley was called to hospital for a potential liver match twice, but sadly neither of them were the right size for her.

Due to being let down several times, her family say she just wanted to “enjoy her life to the max”.

Her sister, Liah Thompson said, “We all knew she was poorly and knew she needed a transplant but we didn’t think it was needed as soon as it was. I think she downplayed it a lot; I think she wanted to live her life because she had been called for transplants before and was disappointed.”

“She just wanted to enjoy herself and I think that’s what sits well with me, that she was happy.”

Liah and her family are now trying to raise funds so they can pay a funeral director to bring Hayley home to Manchester.

“White Lives Matter” banner flown above football match

Burnley have criticised a banner displaying “White Lives Matter Burnley” after it was flown above the Etihad Stadium, during a game against Manchester City on Monday night.

The club quickly put out a statement after the banner, which was towed by a plane, flew over the grounds of the stadium.

Hey @AirAds2 - care to comment in your ad plane that flew above Burnley FC today towing a banner bearing the legend "White Lives Matter"? They’ve completely missed the point. These people need to come into the 21st century and educate themselves.”

“It doesn’t represent what we’re about, what the club’s about, what the players are about and what the majority of our fans are about. We’d heard some whispers that it might happen and the club tried to stop it. I hope it doesn’t happen again. I’m upset that it’s associated with our club, my club.”

The former Manchester City defender Micah Richards, said on Sky Sports: “It’s so disheartening, especially with how far we’ve cone in these last couple of weeks. It really does hurt me.”

European quality body, Fare, released a statement slamming the stunt.

“The racist backlash against the Black Lives Matter movement across Europe is a trend we have seen and documented,” Fare’s executive director, Piara Powar said.

“Set against the BLM message of equal rights ‘White Lives Matter’ can only be motivated by racism and a denial of equal rights. It shows exactly why the fight for equality is so important and why the majority of people have supported it.

“At this stage we don’t know who is behind this, but it’s clear they don’t see the relevance of the message to football or the impact that racism has on so many peoples lives. So be it. The movement, the issues that are being discussed and the change that will arise is unstoppable. History will judge that this was a moment that led to change.”

Is it safe to visit the UK?

Earlier this week, the world was rocked by the horrific and senseless terror attack on concertgoers in Manchester. Naturally, it has people questioning the safety of travelling to one of the world’s most popular destinations – the UK. With the terror threat throughout the country raised from “severe” to “critical” for the first time in nearly 10 years, should we still be visiting Great Britain?

By definition, the “critical” terror threat means an attack may be imminent, and as a result, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advise travellers to exercise a “high degree of caution.”

Smartraveller also advises Aussie travellers should “avoid the area surrounding the Manchester Arena and anticipate significant transport delays in the Manchester area.”

Here are their general recommendations for those about to travel to an area with a “high degree of caution” warning, according to their website.

Have a basic understanding of the political and security situation in your destination.

Familiarise yourself with the destination, especially dangerous areas of a city, types of crimes, risky modes of transport, specific precautions for women or LGBTI travellers and any behaviour that may offend or break the law.

Be aware of religious holidays or days national significance. In some countries terrorists have launched attacks on these occasions.

Subscribe to Smartraveller country travel advice.

Register with Smartraveller

Avoid known flashpoints when travelling between points at your destination, such as protest areas.

Don't wander into unknown areas. Find out how safe they are first.

If there is a threat of terrorism, consider the level of security provided at the types of locations which may be targeted by terrorists. If you decide to visit such a location, minimise your time there.

Vacate an area at the first sign of unrest, or if you feel uneasy.

Be aware of building exits and always know the safe places you can access if you feel threatened.

Take notice of the people around you, and their behaviour. Be aware that, in an unfamiliar cultural setting, you may misinterpret some behaviour.

Be suspicious of people asking for personal information without reason.

Very wicked. To target that sort of thing,” the Queen told 14-year-old Evie Mills, who had been thrilled to receive the concert tickets as a birthday gift. “Everyone’s united here.”

Her Majesty, 91, also met with the hospital staff whose tireless efforts saved lives that fateful day. “The awful thing was that everyone was so young,” she said. “The age of them.”

The royal visit certainly put a smile on the faces of the Ariana Grande fans, particularly 15-year-old Millie Robson. “She’s lovely, it was just... mind-blowing really,” Robson told Sky News. “You just wouldn't really expect it.”

Earlier in the week, the Queen issued a statement to the City of Manchester, expressing her shock and horror at the events which took place. “I know I speak for everyone in expressing my deepest sympathy to all who have been affected by this dreadful event and especially to the families and friends of those who have died or were injured,” the statement reads. “I want to thank all the members of the emergency services, who have responded with such professionalism and care.”

Crowds cheered Her Majesty as she departed the hospital.

Ariana Grande’s touching offer to families of Manchester attack victims

While the Manchester attacks undoubtedly showed the cruellest side of human nature, it’s also brought out some incredible acts of heroism, kindness and generosity. Now, it seems the pop star who unwittingly found herself at the centre of the attack has made a touching offer to the families of the 22 innocent victims.

Ariana Grande, the 23-year-old US singer whose concert was targeted by terrorists on Monday night, has reportedly offered to pay for the victims’ funerals. A Twitter account dedicated to providing updates to Grande fans shared the news on Tuesday. “Ariana has reached out to the families whose loves ones died last night,” they wrote. “She is gonna pay for the funerals.”

However, the tweet has since been deleted by the account for fear of spreading unsubstantiated news, given representatives for Grande are yet to confirm if she has made the offer.

Grande was in the middle of her Dangerous Woman tour before the attack on Manchester Arena, which the singer admitted left her “broken”. She has since cancelled all shows until at least June 5. “Due to the tragic events in Manchester the Dangerous Woman tour with Ariana Grande has been suspended until we can further assess the situation and pay our proper respects to those lost,” her management revealed to E!
