Susie O'Neill's replacement announced on popular morning show

<p>Popular comedian Nikki Osborne has been announced as the new co-host of Nova Brisbane’s 106.9 breakfast show, stepping in to fill the void left by Olympic swimming champion Susie O’Neill.</p> <p>Osborne will join longtime presenters Ash Bradnam and David “Luttsy” Lutteral from January 20, 2024, bringing her signature humour and vibrant personality to the much-loved morning program.</p> <p>“I have big flippers to fill, but I’m confident Brisbane will warm to my ways,” Osborne quipped. “Sure, I get in trouble a bit, but I’ve got two big brothers in Ash and Luttsy, and I have no doubt they’ll steer me even further off course!”</p> <p>Osborne, a seasoned performer in the Australian entertainment industry, is no stranger to the spotlight. She has made her mark in stand-up comedy and starred in TV shows such as <em>How To Stay Married</em> and <em>Kinne Tonight</em>. Reality TV fans may also recognise her from <em>I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here</em> in 2020 and <em>Dancing with the Stars</em> earlier this year.</p> <p>A Brisbane native and mother of two, Osborne expressed excitement about her new role. “I love Brisbane. I grew up here, and I look forward to having a good laugh with our listeners in this amazing city,” she said.</p> <p>Her appointment comes after O’Neill’s <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/music/heavy-heart-susie-o-neill-breaks-down-as-she-resigns-live-on-air" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tearful departure announcement</a> last month. O’Neill, who has been a staple of Nova’s breakfast lineup for over a decade, revealed that turning 50 had prompted her to embrace new personal and professional opportunities.</p> <p>“For a lot of the time, it has been more than just a job,” O’Neill shared emotionally. “When I’ve had really hard times, I’ve known that I can come in here, just be myself, and enjoy it.”</p> <p>Reflecting on her decision, O’Neill explained, “I feel like I want to get back to the grassroots of sport and involve myself more in the wider community.”</p> <p>Listeners can expect a fresh dynamic with Osborne at the mic, as she brings her comedic flair and Brisbane pride to the morning airwaves.</p> <p><em>Images: Nova</em></p>

Why do I poo in the morning? A gut expert explains

People really are more likely to poo in the morning, shortly after breakfast. Researchers have actually studied this.</p> <p>But why mornings? What if you tend to poo later in the day? And is it worth training yourself to be a morning pooper?</p> <p>To understand what makes us poo when we do, we need to consider a range of factors including our body clock, gut muscles and what we have for breakfast.</p> <p>Here’s what the science says.</p> <h2>So morning poos are real?</h2> <p>In a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1379343/">UK study</a> from the early 1990s, researchers asked nearly 2,000 men and women in Bristol about their bowel habits.</p> <p>The most common time to poo was in the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1379343/pdf/gut00573-0122.pdf">early morning</a>. The peak time was 7-8am for men and about an hour later for women. The researchers speculated that the earlier time for men was because they woke up earlier for work.</p> <p>About a decade later, <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16200717/">a Chinese study</a> found a similar pattern. Some 77% of the almost 2,500 participants said they did a poo in the morning.</p> <h2>But why the morning?</h2> <p>There are a few reasons. The first involves our <a href="https://theconversation.com/circadian-rhythm-nobel-what-they-discovered-and-why-it-matters-85072">circadian rhythm</a> – our 24-hour internal clock that helps regulate bodily processes, such as digestion.</p> <p>For healthy people, our internal clock means the muscular contractions in our colon follow <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19926812/">a distinct rhythm</a>.</p> <p>There’s minimal activity in the night. The deeper and more restful our sleep, the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4677652">fewer</a> of these muscle contractions we have. Contractions in our colon are most active in the morning after waking up and after any meal.</p> <p>One particular type of colon contraction partly controlled by our internal clock are known as “<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1411356/">mass movements</a>”. These are powerful contractions that push poo down to the rectum to prepare for the poo to be expelled from the body, but don’t always result in a bowel movement. In healthy people, these contractions occur a few times a day. They are more frequent in the morning than in the evening, and after meals.</p> <p>Breakfast is also a trigger for us to poo. When we eat and drink our stomach stretches, which triggers the “<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK549888/">gastrocolic reflex</a>”. This reflex stimulates the colon to forcefully contract and can lead you to push existing poo in the colon out of the body. We know the gastrocolic reflex is strongest in the morning. So that explains why breakfast can be such a powerful trigger for a bowel motion.</p> <p>Then there’s our morning coffee. This is a very <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2338272/">powerful stimulant</a> of contractions in the sigmoid colon (the last part of the colon before the rectum) and of the rectum itself. This leads to a bowel motion.</p> <h2>How important are morning poos?</h2> <p><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1846921/pdf/brmedj02601-0041.pdf">Large international</a> <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20205503/">surveys</a> show the vast majority of people will poo between three times a day and three times a week.</p> <p>This still leaves a lot of people who don’t have regular bowel habits, are regular but poo at different frequencies, or who don’t always poo in the morning.</p> <p>So if you’re healthy, it’s much more important that your bowel habits are comfortable and regular for you. Bowel motions <em>do not</em> have to occur once a day in the morning.</p> <p>Morning poos are also not a good thing for everyone. <a href="https://gut.bmj.com/content/61/Suppl_2/A318.1">Some people</a> with <a href="https://theconversation.com/explainer-what-is-irritable-bowel-syndrome-and-what-can-i-do-about-it-102579">irritable bowel syndrome</a> feel the urgent need to poo in the morning – often several times after getting up, during and after breakfast. This can be quite distressing. It appears this early-morning rush to poo is due to overstimulation of colon contractions in the morning.</p> <h2>Can you train yourself to be regular?</h2> <p>Yes, for example, to help treat constipation using the gastrocolic reflex. Children and elderly people with constipation can use the toilet immediately after eating breakfast <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK549888/">to relieve symptoms</a>. And for adults with constipation, drinking coffee regularly can help stimulate the gut, particularly in the morning.</p> <p>A disturbed circadian rhythm can also lead to irregular bowel motions and people more likely to poo in the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7147411/">evenings</a>. So better sleep habits can not only help people get a better night’s sleep, it can help them get into a more regular bowel routine.</p> <p>Regular physical activity and avoiding <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2787735/">sitting down a lot</a> are also important in <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16028436/">stimulating bowel movements</a>, particularly in people with constipation.</p> <p>We know <a href="https://theconversation.com/nervous-tummy-why-you-might-get-the-runs-before-a-first-date-106925">stress</a> can contribute to irregular bowel habits. So minimising stress and focusing on relaxation <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5193306/">can help</a> bowel habits become more regular.</p> <p>Fibre from fruits and vegetables also <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/665565/">helps</a> make bowel motions more regular.</p> <p>Finally, ensuring <a href="https://theconversation.com/health-check-what-causes-constipation-114290">adequate hydration</a> helps minimise the chance of developing constipation, and helps make bowel motions more regular.</p> <h2>Monitoring your bowel habits</h2> <p>Most of us consider pooing in the morning to be regular. But there’s a wide variation in normal so don’t be concerned if your poos don’t follow this pattern. It’s more important your poos are comfortable and regular for you.</p> <p>If there’s a major change in the regularity of your bowel habits that’s concerning you, see your GP. The reason might be as simple as a change in diet or starting a new medication.</p> <p>But sometimes this can signify an important change in the health of your gut. So your GP may need to arrange further investigations, which could include blood tests or imaging.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Kylie Gillies breaks down live on-air after surprise family news

<p><em>The Morning Show </em>host Kylie Gillies was overwhelmed with emotion after the show's crew surprised her with new photos of her sons. </p> <p>The TV personality was was discussing the 90th birthday of the Australian Women’s Weekly with the magazine's Editor-in-Chief, when she was shown pictures that she took with her boys for the first time. </p> <p>“Are these in this one?” she exclaimed, while pointing at the magazine. “That’s such a surprise! Oh look!”</p> <p>Kylie immediately burst into tears when she saw the pictures of herself with her sons Gus and Archie. </p> <p><em>The Morning Show </em>host had no clue that the photos were included in the special commemorative issue until they were shown live on-air. </p> <p>The teary-eyed host was touched by the surprise and noted that the photos were taken “just before Gus went to Europe” and that her boys are now “so big”. </p> <p>“Oh Gus and Arch!” she said, before asking the show's crew how they pulled off such a sweet surprise. </p> <p>“How did you keep that surprise from me?!”</p> <p>A few other photos from her previous Australian Women’s Weekly shoots with her sons from 2009 were also shown on screen. </p> <p>“Look at that,” she said. “And they’re all grown-up now!”</p> <p>The surprise comes just two months after her son Gus <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/fly-away-kylie-gillies-emotional-family-update" target="_blank" rel="noopener">left the family nest</a> to continue his studies overseas. </p> <p><em>Images: The Morning Show</em></p>

Dr Chris Brown calls out Seven’s “stupid” Logies decision

<p dir="ltr">Dr Chris Brown has jokingly called out Seven’s “stupid” decision to make him co-host of this year’s TV Week Logies red carpet.</p> <p dir="ltr">The <em>Bondi Vet</em> star is set to present at the red carpet alongside Sonia Kruger on July 30, but he is still unsure as to why he was chosen.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Can I just tell you, it is one of the more stupid decisions ever made by Channel 7 to put me on the Red Carpet,” he joked during his guest appearance on Triple M’s<em> Mick &amp; MG in the Morning</em> on July 13.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I know nothing about fashion... and I am also colourblind,” he said, which made the radio hosts chuckle.</p> <p dir="ltr">Brown wondered how he would comment on the stars’ gowns given his condition.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The joy that I’m going to have in telling women that I love their green dress and (I’m) gonna be told it’s red... what could possibly go wrong?” he told the radio hosts.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The insulting nature of my commentary is going to be worth it.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Mick Molloy then joked that he was “going to make the carpet green” for extra laughs, to which Brown replied: “it might as well be, Micky”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Brown and Kruger will present the star-studded event and bring viewers straight into the action from the Logies red carpet at Sydney’s The Star on Sunday, July 30.</p> <p dir="ltr">This will be Brown’s first official role at Seven since he<a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/the-doctor-is-out-chris-brown-changes-the-script" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> left <em>Network Ten</em></a> in February, where he had worked for the last 15 years.</p> <p><em>Image: News.com.au/ Triple M’s Mick &amp; MG in the Morning</em></p>

“Babies!”: Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies stun fans with throwback pics

<p>The Morning Show hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies have delighted fans with throwback footage from their earlier years on TV.</p> <p>The hosts were presenting a story on how our voices change and get deeper as we age and to prove their point, they decided to do their own demonstration.</p> <p>Both Emdur and Gillies took turns saying sentences they used to say when they were reporting decades ago, then compared it to how their younger selves would say it.</p> <p>They anticipated the throwback footage with slightly worried expressions and Gillies was up first.</p> <p>Her voice was considerably higher and softer and she rocked the classic haircut from the '90s and 2000s that was heavily influenced by “Rachel” from Friends.</p> <p>“There you go,” Gillies said, mildly cringing.</p> <p>“We were young. It was 23 years ago,” she added.</p> <p>Emdur’s throwback footage went all the way back to the '80s when he was reporting for 7News.</p> <p>“How good is that?” Larry laughed at the video.</p> <p>“Button-down collars, my Dad’s old woollen tie.</p> <p>“Here’s the thing. We were kids, right? I was trying very hard to, you know, sound like a man,” he quipped while deepening his voice.</p> <p>“Between that age and this age, I know what’s happened to me and my voice!”</p> <p>The duo giggled at the hair and make-up from the '90s and reminisced on how young they were.</p> <p>“I had the full kick-out hairstyle!” Gillies commented.</p> <p>“Our voices have DROPPED,” Larry added.</p> <p>“Babies!” Kylie added. “Look at us now!”</p> <p><em>Images: The Morning Show</em></p>

Here’s what would happen to your body if you didn’t have your morning coffee

<p><strong>What happens when you skip coffee entirely?</strong></p> <p>Coffee is a morning constant for many, as reliable as the sunrise or the tides. Miss it, and you can feel dazed, confused and even risk a pounding headache. There’s a good reason for that: Caffeine produces some reliable physical changes in your body upon which you can easily become dependent.</p> <p>With that first sip of coffee, caffeine enters your bloodstream and begins making its way to your brain where it blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine, according to the <em>National Academy of Sciences</em>. That, in turn, sets off the release of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin, causing a stimulant effect. Coffee’s so-called half-life – meaning the amount of time it takes for the amount of caffeine in the body to be reduced by 50 per cent – is about five hours on average.</p> <p>That explains why the average energy drink or coffee buzz lasts about that long. But how quickly caffeine leaves your system depends on a number of things, including age, medical conditions, drug interactions and lifestyle habits (like smoking).</p> <p><strong>A shock to the system</strong></p> <p>So, no surprise, when you’re deprived of your morning coffee, you don’t just suffer due to routine alteration. You suffer chemically, too. As anybody who’s kicked their coffee habit will tell you: The side effects can be pretty noticeable and jarring. Some of the more common symptoms of caffeine withdrawal stem from the inherent perks of those multi cups of Joe.</p> <p>Minus the kickstart to your metabolism, you’ll feel tired, sluggish, foggy-headed, and physically delayed, according to a review of studies published in 2020 in <em>StatPearls</em>. Researchers found that the more caffeine you consume, the more severe the withdrawal; but abstinence from even small amounts – we’re talking one cup of coffee per day – also produced symptoms of caffeine withdrawal. They kick in 12 to 24 hours after your last caffeine fix and may last up to nine days, says Dr Sherry A Ross, women’s health expert, author of <em>She-ology: The She-quel. </em></p> <p>“Caffeine is a stimulating drug that some people can easily become addicted to,” she explains. “Depending on the quantity and type of caffeine you are consuming daily, your body type and frequency of consumption can set you up for a caffeine addiction.”</p> <p><strong>Coffee's not all bad</strong></p> <p>Just because you can develop a dependence on your morning jolt doesn’t mean that cup of java belongs on the do-not-consume list. Just the opposite, in fact. A large review of studies published in 2017 in the journal BMJ found that coffee consumption is not only safe for most people (except pregnant women and women who are at an increased risk of fracture), it also provides a number of health benefits, especially for people with chronic liver disease.</p> <p>The review also showed that participants who consistently drank at least three cups of coffee per day had a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, gallstone disease, cancer (including melanoma, leukaemia and prostate, endometrial, oral, and liver cancer), as well as cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and stroke as compared with coffee abstainers.</p> <p>The trick, of course, is practicing portion control. The researchers found that the health benefits of coffee top out at three to four cups a day (as compared to none). “My sex statue is famous”: Larry Emdur reacts to X-rated home reveal

<p dir="ltr"><em>The Morning Show</em> host Larry Emdur has been making a name for himself in the world of game show TV for a few years hosting<em> The Chase Australia</em>, but despite his success, he’s still had his sights set on one more goal: making an appearance on the<em> Have You Been Paying Attention?</em> series. </p> <p dir="ltr">And now, it seems like Larry’s dream has come true, though not exactly in the way he might have expected. </p> <p dir="ltr">The popular host and his wife, Sylvie, have had their hands full recently trying to sell their Kangaroo Valley retreat, better known as Sky Ridge. </p> <p dir="ltr">And while pictures of the property and its picturesque surrounds are available thanks to Belle Property, it wasn’t the property’s luxury four bedrooms or sweeping views that saw it get a mention on the Channel 10 game show.</p> <p dir="ltr">Instead, it was a statue situated in the home’s main living space that caught their attention, with <em>Have You Been Paying Attention? </em>host Tom Gleisner asking his panel if they knew why Larry’s holiday home had gone viral throughout the week. </p> <p dir="ltr">Ed Kavalee was quick to suggest that it was because “the price was right”, while Sam Pang asked if it was because “it has to do with the backyard, they found a shallow grave?”</p> <p dir="ltr">Kavalee eventually got to the right answer, revealing that “there was, like, a pornographic statue in there.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The statue in question could be found perched on top of Larry’s dining room table, and appeared to catch two people caught up in the moment having “X-rated raunchy sex”, as Larry himself put it. </p> <p dir="ltr">The <em>HYBPA?</em> audience found it hilarious, and thankfully, Larry was more than happy to see the funny side of it all, too. </p> <p dir="ltr">Taking to social media after learning about his unexpected cameo, Larry shared that he’d “always wanted to be on <em>Have You Been Paying Attention?</em> but not for a disgraceful reason like this.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“My sex statue is famous,” he added, before sharing details of the property and that “YES !!!! <p dir="ltr">Kylie Gillies has shared an emotional family update after her eldest son, Gus, embarks on a new journey.</p> <p dir="ltr">The <em>Morning Show</em> host took to Instagram to share the moment she had to say goodbye to her son, as he leaves the family nest to study in Europe for 12 months.</p> <p dir="ltr">“You help them grow wings ... and then they fly away ✈️,” Kylie Gillies wrote in the caption.</p> <p dir="ltr">“A parent’s proud moment. And heartache too. Safe travels for the next 12 months Gus.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Have fun, learn lots, make memories and if you don’t ‘what’s app’ us, I swear I’m on the next flight to Europe. 😂 Joking. Or am I? Here you can visit the Peace Memorial Museum where you’ll learn the painful extent of the atomic bomb tragedy. Osaka</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Osaka is where it’s happening in terms of street food and nightlife. “I’ll never speak to him again”: Samuel Johnson blows up at Molly Meldrum

<p>While speaking to Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies on <em>The Morning Show</em>, a visibly upset Samuel Johnson blew up over 79-year-old Molly Meldrum’s bizarre behaviour at a recent Elton John concert. </p> <p>Meldrum issued an apology for the <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/music/a-naughty-boy-who-needs-a-new-belt-molly-meldrum-s-excuse-for-mooning-elton-john-s-crowd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“faulty belt buckle” incident</a>, telling the <em>Herald Sun</em> that he “shouldn’t have ventured on stage, but I just wanted to tell Elton that I loved him. Some people thought it was part of the show. It wasn’t. Elton had no idea I was going to jump on stage. Elton might have been singing The Bitch Is Back but it was more a case of the idiot is back.”</p> <p>Now Johnson has revealed something of a rift between himself and Meldrum – whom he portrayed in the 2016 miniseries “Molly”, and was rewarded for his efforts with a coveted Gold Logie. </p> <p>It was during that 2017 Gold Logie acceptance speech that Meldrum mounted the stage and stole Johnson’s “million-dollar moment” when he was trying to raise funds for cancer, which claimed the life of his sister Connie.</p> <p>Johnson told hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies that he has not said a word to Meldrum since that incident.</p> <p>“I’ll never speak to him again. He cost my charity a million dollars that night</p> <p>“I want to do him a service, not a disservice. I am a little bit uneasy talking about this.</p> <p>“Firstly, thank you, Molly. He has helped me out of a legal pickle and I’ve known him for 20 years. He visited my sister in hospital when she was sick with cancer when she was 11 in the 1980s.</p> <p>“I am really grateful for everything Molly has done in our lives. But at the same time, when I won the Gold Logie I was about to have my million-dollar moment and I told him specifically not to come on stage. He was not nominated, it was my moment.</p> <p>“I wanted to make it about cancer and he wanted to make it about the network. He ended up coming up at the Gold Logies and it was my million-dollar moment gone wrong,” Johnson fumed.</p> <p>“It was an absolute catastrophe. He warbled in a very drunken fashion for eight whole minutes. Now I have seen him do it again at the Elton John concert. Maybe it is time to hang up your hat, mate. I hope he is OK.”</p> <p>Johnson also made it very clear that he did not believe Molly’s excuse and apology. “I thought his apology was false. I don’t believe it was a wardrobe malfunction,” he said.</p> <p>“I believe that if it was a wardrobe malfunction, we would have seen his undies not his bum.</p> <p>“For years, I have not said anything. I don’t want to say anything. Who are his minders? Is he OK? He should not be allowed out in the PM.</p> <p>“He has two shots of vodka in his coffee in the morning. Whoopi weighs in on Rebel Wilson furore

<p dir="ltr">Whoopi Goldberg has come out swinging against the Sydney Morning Herald columnist who was accused of threatening to expose Rebel Wilson’s relationship.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Aussie actress revealed that she is in a relationship with fashion designer Ramona Agruma on Instagram by sharing a smiling selfie.</p> <p dir="ltr">However, behind those wide smiles was something more sinister - a deadline of exposing her relationship before she was even ready. </p> <p dir="ltr">Andrew Hornery, the journalist who penned the piece about Rebel’s relationship, was called out for his “threatening email” which gave the actress a deadline. </p> <p dir="ltr">This has not sat well with many, with the news reaching as far as the US and now renowned Hollywood actress Whoopi Goldberg, has weighed in. </p> <p dir="ltr">“There’s a lot of speculation that (Wilson came out) to get ahead of a tabloid story in the Sydney Morning Herald about her relationship. Now, the man who wrote it even apologised, saying it was ‘never his intention to “out” her’ … Well, you know that’s not true, because if it wasn’t your intention you wouldn’t have done it,” Whoopi said on <em>The View</em> alongside other panelists.</p> <p dir="ltr">“If you didn’t want to do it, you shouldn’t have done it – you knew exactly what you were doing.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It seems these are the only moves people have to get in front of a story before it’s all over social media or every other media … and there’s got to be a better way to do it."</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"> <p dir="ltr" lang="en">CELEBRITIES DISCLOSING NEWS ON THEIR TERMS? I am a journalist from The Sydney Morning Herald and I was hoping I could get a comment from Rebel regarding her new relationship,” Hornery said. </p> <p dir="ltr">“While I realise Rebel’s partner has not been mentioned as yet, I have several sources who have confirmed their status and I have enough detail to publish.</p> <p dir="ltr">“However, in the interests of transparency and fairness, before publishing I am reaching out to Rebel to see if she will engage in what I believe is a happy and unexpected news story for her, especially given the recent Pride celebrations.</p> <p dir="ltr">“My deadline is Friday, 1pm Sydney-time. The two words Andrew O’Keefe repeats to himself every morning

<p dir="ltr">Andrew O’Keefe is settling into a very different lifestyle after being granted bail in May following allegations he assaulted a sex worker. </p> <p dir="ltr">The former <em>The Chase Australia</em> host will complete his court ordered rehab at the Connect Global centre at Swan Bay on the NSW mid-north coast.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 50-year-old begins his day at 5.30am and tells himself that he is a “good man” before making his bed and goes for either a 3.5km run, a gym workout or a boxing session and settling for breakfast.</p> <p dir="ltr">The rehab facility will be O’Keefe’s new home for the next six to 12 months where he will complete a number of chores, attend counselling sessions and Alcoholic or Narcotics anonymous meetings. </p> <p dir="ltr">O’Keefe had been ordered to attend rehab nine times before, but this time he says will be different. </p> <p dir="ltr">“This is a very different place. It’s very much a holistic view of one’s place in the world,” he told <a href="https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/andrew-okeefe-reveals-life-inside-rehab-declares-this-time-will-be-different/news-story/f2640aa7ecaea8a190a57e247c789186" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Telegraph</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">“That is to say that you do address issues of addiction and patterns of behaviour but you do it in a way that is very much focused on being a useful member of family and community.</p> <p dir="ltr">“A big part of that is being free of drugs and it’s about questioning how you associate with your family and loved ones and creating a very positive vision for yourself of your place in society, which is not only what the blokes here lack but what other blokes in general lack as well.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The centre’s creator Pastor Ross Pene said O’Keefe is doing “great” and said the former White Ribbon Australia chairman is taking on responsibilities. </p> <p dir="ltr">O’Keefe has been accused of grabbing a sex worker by the throat before punching her and pushing her to the ground.</p> <p dir="ltr">He has pleaded not guilty to all six, which included three counts of common assault, intentionally choking a person without consent, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.</p> <p dir="ltr">The court heard that Mr O’Keefe claimed he was acting in self-defence after being attacked, though the complainant hasn’t been charged with any offences.</p> <p dir="ltr">O’Keefe will be reappearing in court in June to challenge a charge of breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) against another complainant, and again in July to examine the evidence relating to the allegations of assault and choking.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty</em></p>

Your morning cup of coffee could help you live longer

<p>While coffee helps us function, it could also potentially be an elixir to a longer life. Drinking 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day, even with sugar, could help you live longer.</p> <p>An international team of scientists (and fellow coffee lovers) spent seven years looking at the caffeinated drinking habits of 171,000 participants from the UK, all of whom had no known heart disease or cancer.</p> <p>The authors found that participants who drank any amount of unsweetened coffee were 16% to 21% less likely to die within that seven-year period, compared to those who did not drink coffee. They also found that participants who liked their coffee sweet, drinking it with one teaspoon of sugar, had a 29% to 31% lower chance of passing away.</p> <p>Results were inconclusive for those who drank coffee with artificial sweetener.</p> <p>The researchers caution that for maximum benefits, coffee drinkers should consume no more than 3.5 cups per day, and limit the amount of sugar with each coffee. Not only will showering the night before save you time in the morning, but you’ll rinse away any allergens, like pollen and dust, that could be clinging to your hair or skin. You’ll also wake up in the morning already feeling fresh, clean and ready to conquer.</p> <p><strong>Comb it out</strong></p> <p>Press the snooze button guilt-free knowing that you’ll wake up with fewer tangles. Shave minutes off of your morning routine by running a comb through wet hair at night. Instead of waking to a knotted mop, comb through your hair from top to bottom the night before, and consider sleeping in a braid to ward off tangles. The result: less damage, fewer split ends, and time shaved off the morning rush.</p> <p><strong>Stop the stink</strong></p> <p>You’ve likely been swiping, rolling, or spraying on your antiperspirant in the morning hours, but, as it turns out, it’s best to apply the product at night. The added time it stays on your skin allows the active ingredients – usually a combination of an antiperspirant and odour reducer – to get into your sweat ducts. Worried about washing off the white stuff when you’re getting ready in the morning? Don’t be. By then the product will have sunken in, and the ingredients should remain active for 24 hours.</p> <p><strong>Baby your face</strong></p> <p>The same circadian rhythm that controls when we fall asleep and wake up also directs other dynamics in the body – including the behaviour of our skin. Research shows that while during the day our skin is busy regulating body temperature and protecting against assaults like sun damage and oxidation, at night it goes into makeover mode, with cells being renewed and repaired. This is when cells need nutrients the most, and when their anti-ageing benefits have maximum impact, so go ahead and apply a generous layer of essences, serums, lotions, and creams before you hit the sheets.</p> <p><strong>Use a razor</strong></p> <p>If you shave at night, stubbly legs won’t limit your options when you’re picking out your outfit in the morning. No nicks or razor burn from a rushed shave job is always a bonus. Moisturise just after you shave to lock in all-night hydration.</p> <p><strong>Take it off</strong></p> <p>You probably know how important it is to clean off your foundation, bronzer and blush, lest they clog pores and trigger acne. But it’s also a good idea to remove your eye makeup – mascara, liner, and eye shadow – to protect against brittle lashes, lash loss, and potential eye irritation (not to mention a dirty pillowcase).</p> <p><strong>Tie one on</strong></p> <p>Choose a soft hair tie – or better yet recycle a 1990s scrunchie – and sleep in a loose bun or braid. This small nighttime ritual can help prevent hair breakage, as you toss and turn and otherwise tangle your hair while you sleep. ‘Vulnerable’ woman murdered on morning walk

<p>A woman has been molested and killed during her regular morning walk in Auckland and New Zealand Police have already arrested one man in the murder investigation.</p> <p>The body of Lena Zhang, also known as Lena Zhang Harrap, was found in an area of bush on Wednesday afternoon in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert.</p> <p>The 27-year-old, who has Down Syndrome, was reported missing just hours earlier after leaving her home. She left her home around 6.30 am to go for her regular walk to Ōwairaka Domain but never returned.</p> <p><strong>Suspect will appear in court today</strong></p> <p>A 31-year-old man will appear in court today faced with the murder and sexual violation of Lena Zhang.</p> <p>New Zealand Police said they received a significant amount of information from the public following an appeal they made to the public after Zhang’s body was found, to help identify a person of interest they were trying to locate in relation to the murder.</p> <p>Police had uncovered photos of the “person of interest” via CCTV footage. At the time he was wearing a blue jumper and had been captured on CCTV near the area where Lena’s body was found on Wednesday morning.</p> <p>As a result of this appeal and the use of CCTV footage, this man was found in a vehicle in Papatoetoe - around 20km away from Mt Albert - at 1.30 am on Thursday and was arrested.</p> <p><img style="width: 0px; height: 0px;" src="/nothing.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/0c976aa1225549908cd0156d8ee74c41" /><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7844362/lena-person-of-interest-um_blurred.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/0c976aa1225549908cd0156d8ee74c41" /></p> <p>Detective Inspector Aaron Pascoe said police hoped news of the arrest would provide some reassurance to the local community.</p> <p>Police were not currently seeking anyone else in relation to the murder, however enquiries continued into the investigation with a fresh appeal for sightings of a car.</p> <p><strong>Zhang’s family and the community are devastated by her death</strong></p> <p>Detective Inspector Aaron Pascoe said Zhang’s family are understandably devastated by her death.</p> <p>“Lena was a young lady, she was small in stature, she was vulnerable,” said Inspector Pascoe.</p> <p>He added she was a “loving and caring person” who was raised to be independent.</p> <p>“Whoever the offender or offenders are, they’ve targeted a vulnerable member of our community which is just appalling,” Pascoe said.</p> <p><strong>StarJam pays tribute to Lena</strong></p> <p>StarJam, an organisation which uses music, dance and performance to connect young people with disabilities, have paid tribute Lena saying she was a "true Jammer".</p> <p>A Facebook post said: “For over 12 years, Lena has been a true Jammer in Auckland Magic Movers and more recently the Central Alumni All Stars; greeting everyone with her infectious smile, genuine heartfelt support and inviting her fellow Jammers up to join her Spot the Talents. Lena, you will always be in our hearts – our thoughts go out to your family and friends.’”</p> <p>Ella Stuart who worked at StarJam said Lena brought a special touch of magic to the stage: "It was such a privilege to know Lena - she was always so enthusiastic with everything she did and her love of dancing was truly wonderful to watch. Murdoch hires Piers Morgan for new show airing in Australia

<p>Piers Morgan is to join the Rupert Murdoch-owned News Corp and Fox News Media, the company has announced.</p> <p>Morgan will host a new show which will air in the US, UK and Australia - his first major new presenting job since leaving ITV's <em>Good Morning Britain</em> in March this year.</p> <p>"Piers is the broadcaster every channel wants but is too afraid to hire," Murdoch said in a statement.</p> <p>The show will air on the newly-announced talkTV in the UK, Fox Nation in the US, and Sky News Australia.</p> <p><strong>Morgan tweets ‘I’ve gone home’</strong></p> <p>Morgan has commented on his move to News Corp saying: ‘I’ve gone home’.</p> <p>‘Great to be rejoining Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation after 28 years,’ he tweeted.</p> <p>‘The place I started my media career, with the boss who gave me my first big break. 4 genius morning hacks when you have no time to shower

<p> We all have those mornings: the alarm blares, you hit snooze, roll over and fall back asleep ... ten times in a row. Could Alan Jones be making a breakfast radio comeback with John Laws?

<p>Alan Jones was on the Laws’ show as a guest and the two radio personalities talked for a good half an hour, chatting about everything from where to get the best Indian food and whether Jones would like to “set the world on fire” by coming back to radio and working with Laws.</p> <p>At one stage in the conversation, Laws point blank asked Jones: “Do you want a job?” Quick as a flash, Jones answered: “Put a bit of paper in front of me - you know what it’s like. It’s the same old rules isn’t it - you put a bit of paper in front of somebody.”</p> <p>Laws asked again: “Why don’t you come here and work with me? We could set the world on fire you and me.”</p> <p>To which Jones answered: “Why not?”</p> <p>As well, the two radio veterans talked about the fact <em>The Kyle &amp; Jackie O Show</em> which recently won the ratings for radio on both AM and FM. Jones said: “I never begrudge anyone’s success and they’ve earned it. They’ve worked hard for it. They’ve been at it for a long time and they’ve hung in [there]…”</p> <p>Jones added: “At the end of the day, he’s not stupid, Kyle. He’s got real instinct and he’s relatable that people out there can relate to him. Says it as it is. And he can be amusing and entertaining, but equally he can cut through.”</p> <p>“The bulk of the people in radio never win a single survey. You and I are very fortunate, we’ve won thousands of them. But there are people out there who go hard at it every day and have never won a survey,” Laws said.</p> <p>So, if this chat between Jones and Laws is anything to go by, we could be seeing a partnering of the former radio rivals. They certainly seem to be getting on very well. Towards the end of their talk, Jones praised Laws, saying: “You are the legend of Australian broadcasting and the voice of a nation.”</p> <p>Laws wrapped up the talk and referred to Jones as “his friend,” admitting they’d had their disagreements in the past but they’d got over these very quickly. Laws added:</p> <p>“As I’ve said on numerous occasions, I have respect for Alan. I think he’s an excellent broadcaster and I think he’s got an extremely interesting mind and that makes him a cut above the rest – believe me.”</p>
