"Rest in love": All Blacks legend and Dancing with the Stars winner dies at 55

The sports and entertainment communities are mourning the loss of former All Blacks hooker and Dancing with the Stars winner Norm Hewitt, who has passed away at the age of 55.

Hewitt, a beloved figure both on and off the rugby field, succumbed to a lengthy battle with motor neurone disease, as confirmed by his family in a heartfelt statement.

"Although rugby dominated his early life, he established a thriving human relations consultancy after retirement, and his services were much in demand both nationally and internationally," his family shared. "He walked confidently in both Māori and Pākehā worlds and was a particular role model for troubled youth, citing his own background, and offering inspirational teachings that one’s present life need not be one’s future."

Hewitt leaves behind his wife Arlene and their two children, Elizabeth and Alexander. Born and raised in Pōrangahau, southern Hawke’s Bay, Hewitt's rugby career was nothing short of illustrious. Over 13 seasons, he played 296 representative matches for Hawke’s Bay, Southland and Wellington, earning 23 caps for the All Blacks. Hewitt was also a pivotal member of the Hurricanes during the formative years of Super Rugby, missing only one match in the first five years.

The rugby community has been profoundly affected by Hewitt's passing. Former teammate Ofisa Tonu’u posted a touching tribute on Facebook: "I’m just devastated finding out the news today. I will never forget how you always stuck up for me during the Black Tracker days when no one else would, you always look after all the players and we always followed you into battle. No more pain, brother, you can now rest in Love. Fa’afetai tele lava my uso for having my back as I did yours. I know the other boys will be welcoming you with open arms at the gates. Rest in Love, Normy."

Beyond his rugby career, Hewitt transitioned into a public speaker and mentor, focusing heavily on violence prevention programmes and advocacy. He worked with the SPCA as an animal cruelty and anti-violence publicity officer, visiting schools to spread his message. In 2005, Hewitt showcased his versatility by winning the first season of Dancing with the Stars alongside professional dancer Carol-Ann Hickmore.

Hewitt's life was not without its struggles. In 1999, he made a public apology for a drunken incident in Queenstown, marking a turning point as he renounced alcohol and dedicated himself to helping others facing similar challenges.

The outpouring of tributes was immediate, with The All Blacks expressing their sorrow: “We are saddened by the loss of All Black #938 Norm Hewitt who passed away yesterday in Wellington. Hewitt played 9 Tests and 14 Games between 1993 and 1998. Our thoughts are with Norm’s family and loved ones at this time.”

Podcaster Martin Devlin shared his personal experience: “RIP Norm Hewitt. Not a lot of people know how kind & generous this man was. A truly wonderful person. Reached out to me and helped me considerably a long time ago when things were very rough. Love & respect.”

Richard Hills echoed the sentiments of many: “This is bloody sad. A sad way to lose a kiwi icon so young. He had a really rough childhood and upbringing and faced it and turned his life around to become not only a rugby legend but also helped others who’d been through similar issues.”

Norm Hewitt’s legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the positive change he inspired. His story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact one individual can have on the world.

Image: Radio New Zealand

Cruz Hewitt makes his Australian Open debut

Twenty-seven years after a young Lleyton Hewitt made his entrance into the tennis world, another young Hewitt has made their Australian Open debut.

Cruz, the 15-year-old son of Lleyton and Bec, made his big debut in the junior boys’ singles on Sunday, taking on American teen Alexander Razeghi.

Cruz Hewitt is the youngest player in the draw and came out as a wildcard in the tournament, with Razeghi ultimately proving more experienced, as Cruz lost 6-2 6-3 in 1 hour and 26 minutes.

Despite not claiming the match, the similarities between the young tennis star and his famous father were uncanny, with Cruz sporting the backwards cap and almost identical two-handed backhand.

Before taking to the court for the anticipated game, the youngster got in one last masterclass from his dad, a former world No. 1 and two-time grand slam champion, with a quick father-son training session.

Undoubtedly filled with nerves for his son, Lleyton spoke to Nine News before the match, saying he was, “Just unbelievably proud, to be honest.”

“They asked me late last night if I would go out and warm him up this morning on Show Court 3. Just a really special moment.”

“My first ever main draw match at the Australian Open was actually out on Show Court 3 as well.”

“Just some great memories coming back of me playing here. He’s been around the traps, but he’s worked extremely hard to get this opportunity. He is playing well.”

The crowd rallied behind the 15-year-old player during his match, while proud parents Lleyton and Bec watched on eagerly from the stands.

While he fell short of claiming victory against his 17-year-old opponent, Cruz got plenty of encouragement from the crowd as he made the first small steps on his tennis journey.

“He’s still very young. This is all a learning experience,” Lleyton said.

“That’s what the junior event is all about. You want to get the opportunity to play here as seniors one day.”

“He’s been fortunate enough to get a wildcard and hopefully goes out, has a lot of fun.”

Bec and Lleyton Hewitt's son on track for Aussie Open

Bec and Lleyton Hewitt's little boy is growing up fast! Just a few months past his 15th birthday, Cruz Hewitt continued to demonstrate that he's well on his way to following in his famous father's illustrious footsteps.

In mid September, Cruz secured his inaugural professional win at the Darwin Tennis International, even though he was up against much older and more experienced competitors.

That important first pro win came on a Sunday in the first round of qualifiers at the Darwin Tennis International, a 3-6, 4-6, 10-5 thriller over 25-year-old Brian Tran. Cruz then followed that up with another impressive win, 6-3, 6(4)-7, 10-3 over 21-year-old Jerome Iaconi in the second round, before suffering a 3-6, 1-6 loss against 24-year-old Jesse Delaney in the third round of qualifiers.

Cruz was elated to share that his famous dad was overjoyed with his victory when he spoke to reporters, emphasising the significance of his win.

Behind the scenes, Cruz's mother, TV star Bec Hewitt, now aged 40, is more determined than ever to ensure that her family avoids the pitfalls of history repeating itself – as when Lleyton himself went through the trials of becoming an elite-level tennis player.

An insider exclusively shared with Woman's Day, "There was always this underlying feeling that Lleyton's parents, Glynn and Cherilyn, really pushed their boy to get the best out of himself, and it was rumoured at the time that it was their way or the highway when it came to his tennis."

As a result, Bec has spent years advocating for her more balanced parenting approach, steering Lleyton towards her gentler perspective on raising their children (Cruz has a big sister, Mia, who was born in November 2005, and a little sister, Ava, born in October 2010). Now Cruz is shaping up to be a more well-rounded individual compared to his highly-pressured dad, thanks to Bec's belief that life should not solely revolve around tennis.

Bec serves as a calming influence on Cruz, just as she does with their daughters Mia and Ava. Her aspiration for her son is to have him look up to players like Roger Federer, who epitomise true champions both on and off the court. What matters most to Bec is ensuring that Cruz's mental health is as robust as his tennis skills, and she is determined not to push him too hard in pursuit of success.

The talented young athlete has inherited more than just his 42-year-old father's formidable two-handed backhand. When asked about his most recent victory, Cruz confidently remarked to local media: "I'm pretty stoked about getting that win because I had to come from behind. I was fired up, to be honest… It's cool getting to go to different places like here in Darwin, and it's a lot of fun. But I came here to test myself at this level against some older players and see how I fare."

He playfully added, "I also get to miss school today because I won, so that's even better!"

With the entire tennis world closely observing Cruz's every move, the question now arises: Can he break one of his father's longest-standing records? An insider shared, "Lleyton, who these days balances family life with coaching and commentary commitments, first qualified for the 1997 Australian Open at the tender age of 15 years and 11 months, becoming the youngest in the tournament's history.

"He went on to win the 2001 US Open and the 2002 Wimbledon. There's no reason Cruz, who exudes more confidence than most kids his age on the circuit, can't achieve the same over the next few months."

The insider shared, "When Cruz was seven, Lleyton expressed hope that his son would make the main draw at 14. While Bec knows he was simply dreaming big for his son, she wants to shield her boy from excessive pressure and offer unwavering support, win or lose."

Images: Instagram

Couple makes winning profit selling home to Lleyton and Bec Hewitt

A Queensland couple has made a hefty $550,000 after selling their Burleigh Heads home to tennis superstar Lleyton Hewitt and his wife Bec - having lived in the home for just five weeks.

Katie and Jeremy Langston bought ‘The Palms’ at auction in May 2021, paying $3.75 million for one of the state’s most photographed homes.

But, the couple put the four-bedroom mansion back on the market just months later for $4.3 million after realising they wanted to move back to Koala Park.

Within six days of the home hitting the market once again, marketing co-agents Conal Martin of Kingfisher Realty and Harcourts Coastal agent Ed Cherry had received eight offers.

“We only lived in it for about five weeks,” Mr Langston told realestate.com.au.

“We moved out before we put it on the market. Even though we were living in Queensland's home of the year [for] 2021, we were homesick for Koala Park, so we found the perfect location in the same street we lived in previously and sold The Palms to the Hewitts.”

Though they walked away with a handsome sum after the Hewitts spent $4.305 million to snap up the home, Mr Langston said it wasn’t about the money at all.

“We thought ‘we can have our dream house anywhere’ and this is not where we wanted it,” he said.

“We wanted to be in Koala Park and so we are building a beautiful house there now.

“We engaged the builder of The Palms, JG Design and Construct, and have just finalised the plans to build our dream home in the area we love.”

The Langston’s former home has been the subject of a fair amount of publicity, having the process of building documented on Instagram before it became the most viewed house in Australia after it was first listed for sale in May 2021.

Originally sold fully furnished, the home boasted luxe features including a sunken fireplace, glass-edged pool and outdoor kitchen in the entertaining area, as well as Italian terrazzo tiles, stone feature walls, custom brass fittings and Harbour American oak flooring.

Image: Getty Images

See inside Lleyton Hewitt’s coastal escape

Like thousands of other Aussies, Lleyton and Bec Hewitt made the migration from the country’s southern capitals to sunny Queensland - and it wasn’t long until they snapped up a new coastal home.

The former world number one made the move with his family last year, at the same time as he was due to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHF).

“Hewitt’s induction celebrations were deferred to 2022 due to travel restrictions,” a statement from ITHF read.

Having finally received the prestigious award on Saturday (Eastern Time), the tennis legend and his family will be returning to their Gold Coast home they secured for a hefty $4.305 million in September last year.

The home, which had been sold just three months prior for $3.75 million, is in the heart of cosmopolitan Burleigh Heads and boasts plenty of luxe features.

Conal Martin, the listing agent for Kingfisher Realty Burleigh Heads who sold the home prior to the Hewitts purchasing it, describes it as having a Palm Springs coastal design with irrigated greenery, natural stone feature walls and an open plan that flows from inside to outside and sold it as a “place where you can escape the bustle of everyday life”.

“Spend your summer nights by the outdoor kitchen, BBQ and beer fridge, watching your family play in the pool through the custom infinity glass pool window or around the fire roasting marshmallows on those cosier winter nights,” the listing reads.

Inside, the home features timber flooring, high ceilings, a wine cellar, three ensuite bedrooms, and a media room or second living space with stunning hinterland views.

Though it doesn’t come with a tennis court, the home is just a short walk from the famed Burleigh Beach and the area’s buzzing restaurant and bar scene.

According to the ITHF, Hewitt will be the 34th Australian to be entered into the Hall of Fame, describing it as the “ultimate honour” in tennis.

“Induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame is tennis’ ultimate honour, representing the sum of a person’s accomplishments as being among the greatest and most impactful in sport’s history,” the statement read.

“Just 267 athletes and contributors from throughout tennis history have received this honour.”

In a speech during the ceremony, Hewitt said it was an “incredible honour” made all the more special by having his family and friends with him on the court in Newport, Rhode Island, where he won his first ATP grass court match 24 years ago.

“To think where it all began for me on junior tennis courts in the middle of nowhere in Adelaide in Australia, with no one watching, no TV cameras, and then to make the full tennis journey and actually now be coming into the Hall of Fame,” he said.

“For me, this is such a special place here in Newport.”

Images: Getty Images, realestate.com.au

Lleyton Hewitt's huge career moment

Lleyton Hewitt has taken his place among legends as the two-time Grand Slam champion was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The 41-year-old was joined by his wife Bec and three children, Mia, Ava and Cruz, as he was presented with the prestigious award in a ceremony that was delayed due to Covid.

The tennis champ from Adelaide was unable to travel to the Hall of Fame last year from Australia so his induction was postponed for a year and staged after Saturday’s ATP Hall of Fame Open semi-finals in the US.

Coincidentally, the ceremony was staged on the court where Hewitt won his first ATP grass court match as a teen in 1998.

“I think I needed that extra year to come up with some proper words,” Hewitt said in a speech.

“This is an incredible honour for me. It has made it all the more special to be able to have my family and friends here.”

“To think where it all began for me on junior tennis courts in the middle of nowhere in Adelaide in Australia, with no one watching, no TV cameras, and then to make the full tennis journey and actually now be coming into the Hall of Fame. For me, this is such a special place here in Newport,” he said.

Lleyton was honoured for his extraordinary career, as he won the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon titles among 30 career ATP triumphs and helped Australia capture the Davis Cup in 1999 and 2003.

Hewitt was a year-end world number one in 2001 and 2002 and his intense emotion combined with speed and skilled shotmaking made him a threat on any surface, great shots usually followed by the scream, “Come on.”

Hewitt finished with a career record of 616-262 in ATP singles play.

Something remarkable has happened to Australia’s book pages: gender equality has become the norm

For the first time in the nine-year history of the Stella Count, and perhaps in the entire history of Australian book reviewing, gender equality has become the norm in Australia’s books pages. Our new research for the Count reveals 55% of books reviewed in Australian publications in 2020 were by women.

The Stella Count surveys 12 Australian publications – including national, metropolitan, and regional newspapers, journals and magazines – collecting data on the gender of authors and reviewers, length of review and genre of books reviewed.

In 2012 when the Count began, ten of the 13 publications then surveyed reviewed more books written by men. In 2020, only three of the 12 publications currently surveyed review more books by male rather than female authors. All bar one of these publications improved the gender balance of books reviewed significantly over this period.

Some publications have dramatically transformed their pages to better represent women authors between 2011 and 2020. The Age has increased its representation of books written by women from 38% to 55%; The Monthly, from 26% to 56%; and Brisbane’s Courier-Mail, from 43% to 54%.

The Saturday Paper entered the Count in 2014 with 37% of books reviewed written by women; it hit 61% women authors reviewed in 2020. Likewise, the Sydney Review of Books has increased its percentage from 36% in 2015 to 70% in 2020.

These significant gains do not mean gender bias has been eliminated from the Australian book reviewing field. Some publications continue to find the gender parity line a hard one to cross – and in general, books written by men still attract longer reviews.

After several years of stasis, The Australian has inched closer to parity with 45% of its reviews now of books by women. Australian Book Review, however, is the only publication in our study that has not significantly improved representation of women authors over the nine years: indeed, the percentage of reviewed books by women dropped from 47% in 2019 to 43% in 2020.

Why does this matter?

About 22,500 new book titles are published each year in Australia. In a crowded marketplace, any opportunity to get a book discussed in the public eye is worth its weight in gold. Book reviews are a longstanding means of bringing attention and, possibly, acclaim to new titles.

Our surveyed publications published 2,344 reviews in 2020. Some books received multiple reviews, meaning authors of new books have a less than 10% chance of being reviewed in one of Australia’s major book pages.

When you look at the demographics, you would not expect Australia’s literary scene to be a place of gender bias. Women make up 65% of Australian writers, 77% of employees in Australian publishing, and 61% of “frequent readers”.

But until very recently, book reviewing – like literary prizes and school syllabuses – appeared to have a gender problem. There was, however, no comprehensive quantitative evidence to prove it.

Newly-formed feminist nonprofit organisation, The Stella Prize, set out to do something about this in 2012. Inspired by similar counts happening overseas, Stella began collecting statistics about the gender of authors whose books were reviewed. We began working with Stella in 2014 when it expanded the data collection in order to understand how gender bias was operating when it came to the size of reviews, the genre of books reviewed and the gender of reviewers.

Over the ensuing years we have seen something remarkable happen: real change. Literary editors, when asked, were often surprised by the statistics, when presented with them. Or they made excuses for them: men pitch more or write books on important subjects that deserve reviewing, they said. These biases are no longer unconscious.

Gender disparities persist

While this is cause for celebration, there is still some way to go. While women writers now receive their fair share of reviews in terms of the overall number published, this does not mean they receive equal access to the actual space devoted to public literary criticism.

Books written by women are still more likely to receive shorter or capsule reviews. Long reviews – those of 1000 words or more – continue to be largely the precinct of men, either as reviewers or as authors of books reviewed.

Women authors receive 55% of all reviews, but only 45% of long reviews. Long reviews are the most conspicuous and prestigious, not just because of their size and prominence but because they are often written by prominent critics and accompanied by images such as book covers and author photos, which lead to market recognition.

Gender assumptions continue

Long-held assumptions about gender and reading are evident in the Stella Count data. Key among these is the idea that men are interested in books by men, and women are interested in books by women. Australian book reviews are highly partitioned by gender: female reviewers are much more likely to review books by women, and male reviewers books by men.

Fiction reviews skew towards women as authors and reviewers (especially those written for children and young adults), and non-fiction skews towards men. This supports broader findings in relation to the representation of women in Australian media: that women are less likely to be called upon to offer expert commentary on topics such as politics and sport.

Our research also offers a snapshot of the state of book reviewing in Australia. It shows the number of reviews published in our surveyed publications dropped by 15% between 2019 and 2020, when the pandemic arrived here.

The Stella Count is now the longest-running yearly count of a nation’s book pages conducted anywhere in the world. Next year will be the Stella Count’s ten-year anniversary. The real impact of COVID-19 on the gender make up of authors and reviewers – and on Australia’s literary sector more broadly – is yet to be seen, but data collection such as the Stella Count is key to understanding it.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Shutterstock

Bec and Lleyton Hewitt sell Toorak mansion

Bec and Lleyton Hewitt’s Toorak mansion has sold less than a month after hitting the market.

Jellis Craig Stonnington listing agent Phillip French confirmed to the Herald Sun that a Toorak-based family bought the home, located at 34 Heyington Place, but he could not reveal the sale price. The house was listed for $15-16 million, and the Sun understands it sold for within that range.

Mr French said that the buyers had competed with parties from interstate and overseas, as well as local buyers from affluent suburbs like Hawthorn and Kew, to nab the house. He added that buyers were drawn by the living and entertaining spaces available in the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom residence, as well as the bedrooms, the pool, the 1800-bottle wine cellar, the 12-seat home theatre, the home gym, and the location.

“There are some very good buyers around at the moment, and there’s a little bit of a shortage of high-end properties [for sale]. [The property] was very well viewed online, but also there was quite good genuine interest in it,” Mr French said.

The sale comes less than a month after the couple purchased a $4.305 million home in the Gold Coast suburb of Burleigh Heads. While waiting to move into their new home, The Palms, the couple and their children were renting Burleigh Beach Bungalow. The owners said they were surprised that the Hewitts wanted to rent their property, telling the Gold Coast Bulletin, “They loved it as well, which was nice. You get worried as it’s your own house.”

The Hewitt’s new home, the Palms, is often described as “Queensland’s most photographed home”, and it last sold in May for $555,000 less than the famous couple paid for it.

The Hewitts bought the Toorak home in 2016 while it was under construction, paying $12.7 million for the property. They then worked with architect Christopher Doyle and builder Peter Johnston of Royale Construction to add some personal touches.

The home boasts ensuites for each of the five bedrooms and a six-car garage in addition to a home gym, pool, and home theatre. Other amenities include an in-built trampoline, basketball hoop, and astro turf with a Rebound Ace tennis surface.

Mr French described it as a “real entertainer’s home”.

Image: realestate.com.au

“We lost a comedy giant today”: Norm Macdonald dead at 61

The comedy world is in mourning after Norm Macdonald died of cancer on Tuesday at age 61.

The Canadian stand-up comic and Saturday Night Live cast member had been battling cancer in private for nearly a decade, according to his lifelong friend Lori Jo Hoekstra who was with him when he dies.

"He was most proud of his comedy", she said.

"He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him."

"Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”

Norm was known in the comedic circle for his signature deadpan delivery and dry style of humour that quickly made him an icon of the craft.

Norm's impressions of famous figures, such as TV star Burt Reynolds, became a teaching tool and huge inspiration for up and coming comics.

“I essentially ripped off his delivery when I first started acting,” actor and fellow Canadian Seth Rogen tweeted.

“I would stay up specifically to watch him on talk shows. He was the funniest guest of all time. We lost a comedy giant today. One of the all time greats.”

Norm shot to fame when he was cast on Saturday Night Live in 1993 after performing in comedy circuits in Canada for several years.

He performed on SNL until 1998, serving as a co-host of Weekend Update for three seasons.

Norm then went on to star in his own ABC sitcom, The Norm Show, from 1999 until 2001, and also became a hilarious regular on a series of talk shows.

In 2018, he hosted a Netflix talk show, Norm Macdonald Has a Show, that was inspired by his podcast and garnered an international audience.

Hundred of comedians have shared their stories of Norm on Twitter in remembrance of the comedy giant and all he did for the world of show business.

Actor Josh Gad wrote, "Absolutely gutted. One of the most underrated and hilarious SNL performers."

Writer and director Edgar Wright also tweeted, saying, "Of the many addictive rabbit holes you can disappear down on the internet, the most pleasurable is ‘Norm MacDonald chat show appearances'."

“Thanks for all the laughs Norm, very sorry to see you go.”

Bec and Lleyton Hewitt’s kids are growing up fast

Celebrity offspring are not too often in the public eye, and for many years this included the three children of Australian power couple Lleyton and Bec Hewitt.

However, the three little tykes we used to see running around during their dad’s high-profile tennis matches are not so little anymore, and each are paving their own path to greatness just like their parents did.

Here is what the brilliant Hewitt kids are up to now.

Mia

Mia is a spitting image of her tennis star dad, but it seems like the 15-year-old has taken after her mother and wants to pursue a career in fashion and modelling.

Back in Bec’s heyday, it was normal to see the Aussie starlet gracing our TV screens, and it seems like Mia is not far behind her mother as she aims to take over runways across the globe.

The eldest child of Bec and Lleyton is a fashion icon in her own right, with her mum labelling Mia as her fashion muse.

"Happy Birthday to my style icon! @miarebeccaofficial," the proud mum wrote an Instagram post last year.
