What did NASA find on Pluto?

NASA has released a series of images of the surface of Pluto. The images, taken by NASA’s New Horizons probe, reveal Pluto to have blue, Earth-like skies and red water ice.

These images are the first ever shots of Pluto’s atmosphere, with the New Horizons probe capturing an amazing images of the planet’s atmospheric haze shining against the darkness of space.

The red water ice is another significant discovery, and one that has NASA stumped a little bit. While NASA hasn’t figured out the reason for its crimson colour, it does seem to support the theory held by some scientists that Pluto has a potentially-life support liquid sea beneath its surface.

The announcement comes after the science world was whipped into a frenzy by comments from NASA senior planter scientist Dr Alan Stern that seemed to suggest NASA had found life on Pluto.

Dr Stern had told a packed hall of students at the University of Alberta, “This world is alive. It has weather, it has hazes in the atmosphere, active geology. NASA won’t let me tell you what we’re going to tell you on Thursday. It’s amazing.”

When Dr Stern noticed his comments were misconstrued he took to Twitter to deny the rumours, stating he had, “No idea how it [his lecture] was misinterpreted but it was.”

This exciting discovery about Pluto comes a week after NASA announced that it had found liquid water on Mars that could potentially supported life either now or in the past.

Related links:

NASA reveals everything we know about Mars was wrong

NASA releases 10,000 never-before-seen photos of Apollo missions

NASA discovers a self-healing material
