Netflix launches in Australia – and it’s cheap

Streaming entertainment platform Netflix launches in Australia today, after months of chatter and speculation, with prices that undercut its competitors.

The company, which has had rapid growth and great success with its own original television series, has three plans to choose from as of its launch. A standard definition streaming service for one device will set you back $8.99 a month. For streaming in HD on two devices, you’ll have to fork out $11.99, and a four-stream 4K ultra-high definition plan will set you back $14.99 each month.

The company confirmed Australians would have access to a large catalogue of series and movies, including their wildly popular originals, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

While Netflix is the big fish diving into the relatively small pond, there are several other players on the scene who will provide strong competition. Rival Stan has confirmed exclusive content deals with companies like Amazon and Sony, while Presto has exclusive deals with 20th Century Fox, HBO and Showtime.

Image credit: Twin Design / Shutterstock.com

Related links:

Why you’ll love Netflix

A guide to podcasts

What you need to know about Stan, Presto and Netflix
