Mother of baby scalded in park makes sad admission

The mother of baby Luka, who was just nine-months-old when he was attacked by a stranger in a Brisbane park, has made a heartbreaking admission about her son's healing process.

Baby Luka and his mother were enjoying the sun in Hanlon Park on August 27th when a stranger approached and poured boiling hot coffee over the baby boy.

The nine-month-old was rushed to hospital, while the man accused of the attack remains at large.

Luka, now one-year-old suffered serious burns to 60 per cent of his body, including his face, upper body and arms, and has undergone seven operations since the attack.

The young boy's mum has now revealed that it may take her son up to one year to fully recover as he heals from the mental, emotional and physical damages from the attack.

"In those first few weeks, we had no idea what his future was going to look like, especially because the burns were so significant," she told The Courier Mail.

"He didn't have a bath for, like, a month when he had all the bandages, and when we poured water over his head when we had a bath, he started screaming."

Luka's mum said her son was still "wary" around people and had become shy when in a group setting, as opposed to his confidence around others before the incident.

The woman went on to say her son's skin had "healed really well" since the synthetic skin grafts; however, his dad explained it would take years for the scars to settle.

"We are definitely optimistic at this point, he already looks better than we ever thought," Luka's father said.

"Hopefully by the time he becomes a teenager you won't even be able to see the scars anymore."

Bunnings' unexpected visitor sparks sad discussion

A kangaroo has been spotted hopping around a Bunnings Warehouse, with many locals thinking the lost mammal could highlight a much bigger problem.

Shoppers in Western Australia's Albany Bunnings were greeted by the "unusual customer", who was filmed roaming the outdoor furniture section before stopping to take in its surroundings.

A woman captured the scenes and shared the video online, captioning the post, "Looking for a new outdoor setting. Pouch was checked on the way out."

While many couldn't help but be amused at the hoppy shopper, others noted the "sad" issue likely contributing to its "bizarre" appearance.

"So sad, poor baby, where's his habitat gone? "one questioned. "Poor guy," another expressed. "Aww it must be frightened," another pointed out.

Bunnings confirmed the recent incident to Yahoo News, as Bunnings Regional Manager Danielle Walker said, "Our Albany store had an unexpected visitor early Monday morning when a kangaroo hopped in via our drive-through area."

"We thank our team for their assistance in quickly ushering the kangaroo out safely and helping to keep customers shopping with us at a distance".

It's not clear how long the animal was inside the store.

The Bunnings incident is not the first time in the last few months that kangaroos have been spotted in unusual places, as the animals are increasingly being squeezed out as developers build housing that’s needed for the human population.

The habitat loss is thought to be contributing to animals ending up in seemingly random places with nowhere to go.

A body has been recovered in the search for a young boy swept out to sea in front of his family while on a fishing trip at The Entrance, NSW over the weekend.

Laith Alaid, 11, was crossing a channel about 5pm on Sunday when he was caught in the outgoing tide.

His father managed to save his other three sons aged, three, seven and nine, but he could not reach Laith in time.

Bystanders looked after the three children while Laith's father tried to reach him.

“(The father) came here by himself and with his four beautiful boys ... and he tried to save them all, he saved three and by the time he turned around (Laith) was gone ... in a split second,” family member Zeid Alhirz said.

The family were visiting the Central Coast from Sydney and had been fishing when it is understood they took a shortcut across the channel between an estuary and the ocean.

Relatives said they had visited and fished at the popular tourist spot for years and had crossed the channel at least three times before tragedy struck.

An extensive multi-agency search was conducted and on Wednesday police were called back to The Entrance after a body was found in the water.

“While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the missing boy,” NSW Police said.

Inspector David Piddington said “lots of people try to move across that channel” but he advised against it.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Images: 7News

"Struggling": Sad update on Molly Meldrum's health

A close friend of Molly Meldrum has shared a sad update on his health, after he failed to show up for a special Countdown event.

With November 2024 marking 50 years since Countdown first aired, the Royal Australian Mint has launched a commemorative coin for the anniversary, holding an event in Melbourne in celebration.

However, Meldrum was a no-show at the event, with former Countdown announcer and close from of Molly's Gavin Wood saying he has largely retreated from the public eye as he has struggled with declining health ever since he fell off a ladder in December 2011 which almost killed him.

"The fall, it is all down to the fall, was a horrible thing to have happened," Wood told the Herald Sun.

"He is 82 in January. He has been a public figure all his life and I think he is just enjoying a quieter life."

"He is still Molly, still interested in music and still has it turned up to 11. He is still naughty, he has still got that spark that we love, but I think he is enjoying life being a normal person."

Although Meldrum did not attend the coin launch, he did release a statement, sneaking in his famous catchphrase whenever he recommended an artist on Countdown.

"I am left with such fond memories of those days and a show that will never be forgotten," Meldrum said.

"We made a difference to the music industry in Australia and so I am thrilled to see commemorative coin being made."

"Do yourself a favour and get one. Iconic Countdown lives on."

Wood said that his former colleague Meldrum would be "chuffed" to see something "as beautiful and as imaginative" as the coins commemorating the show on the special anniversary.

"My heart is broken": Mariah Carey reveals sad double tragedy

Mariah Carey has revealed a devastating double tragedy, as both her mother and sister passed away on the same day.

In a heartbreaking statement to People, the singer announced the deaths of her mum Patricia, 87, and sister Alison, 63, who died over the weekend.

Carey's statement read, "My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."

"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed."

"I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

No cause of death has been revealed for either member of the family.

Carey famously had a turbulent relationship with her mother and sister over the years, and was estranged from Alison for three decades before her untimely death.

In 2016, Alison, who was a recovering drug addict, made a plea to her famous sister through the Daily Mail to ask for support, saying, "Mariah I love you, I desperately need your help."

As well as substance abuse, Alison endured homelessness throughout her life and tested positive for the HIV virus.

Mariah opened up about complicated relationships with her mom and sister in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning Of Mariah Carey.

"Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions," she explained.

She said their relationship was a "prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment", however the book was still dedicated to Patricia.

"And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could," the singer penned in the dedication. "I will love you the best I can, always."

Princess Diana's younger brother Charles Spencer has shared that he and his wife are divorcing after 13 years of marriage.

The Earl's relationship with his wife, Karen Gordon, reportedly broke down while Spencer was writing his harrowing memoir which detailed the physical and sexual abuse he suffered at boarding school.

Revealing the split to the Mail on Sunday, the 60-year-old said, "It is immensely sad."

"I just want to devote myself to all my children, and to my grandchildren, and I wish Karen every happiness in the future."

Spencer and Gordon, a Canadian philanthropist, first met on a blind date at a restaurant in Los Angeles in 2010, and got married just one year later in June 2011 on the Althorp estate, where Princess Diana is buried.

The couple share a 12-year-old daughter named Charlotte Diana, while Spencer also has four children from his previous marriage to his first wife, Victoria Lockwood, and two children with his second wife, Caroline Freud.

Karen was notably absent at events held at Althorp and Spencer House in London in mid-March to launch the Earl's tell-all book, A Very Private School.

Charles Spencer told the Mail on Sunday that the five years of work on his memoir has deeply affected him and led to him undergoing residential treatment for trauma late last year.

In a March interview with People, Spencer opened up about how “supportive” Karen had been throughout his healing journey as he recalled the traumatic details of his childhood.

“I think it was very challenging for her to have a husband going through what was essentially four and a half years of the most profound therapy with very difficult undertones to it. So, I’m grateful to have her standing by me while I went through this, what I now realise was an essential process.”

The sad state of Aussie ski resorts ahead of winter holiday season

Ski resorts in Australia have had to get creative ahead of the tourist-heavy ski season after a lack of snowfall, despite plunging temperatures.

The ski season begins this year on the June long weekend, running alongside the King’s Birthday on June 8th.

Despite expecting a huge influx of keen skiers, there has only been light flurries of snow so far, according to WeatherZone, which melt away quickly and don't settle on the ground for long.

In order to accommodate the busy season, Thredbo has had to resort to using fake snow for people to ski on.

Manufactured snow happens by combining pressurised air and water through a ‘snow gun’ that gets blasted out into the air.

The most ideal time to create the fake snow is on clear nights with low humidity, as the higher the humidity the colder it needs to be to make the flurries.

Several photos from ski.com.au's cameras have shown popular ski sites with a disappointing lack of snow, in scenes similar to last year's ski season.

“No significant snowfalls are on the horizon for the mainland Australian ski resorts before the official King’s Birthday Long Weekend season opening,” Weatherzone reports.

“Snow-making began on the weekend at several resorts and has continued into the working week in the cold dry, air in the wake of the cold front.”

According to WeatherZone, high-pressure systems, which have brought constant rain to the east coast recently, have been blocking the snowfall.

Image credits: Xinhua News Agency / Thredbo

A father-of-three who fell overboard a P&O cruise ship last week has been identified, and his brother claimed that he had racked up a $4,000 casino debt onboard after being lured to spend big by the company's incentives.

Shane Dixon, 50, died after falling overboard the cruise ship two hours before was due to dock in Sydney Harbour at 6am on Monday, May 6.

Shane was reportedly on the three-day Elvis-themed cruise to Queensland's Moreton Island with his mother Sue Dixon, 66, who had saved up for the trip.

"Our mother is devastated. Broken," Shane's brother Scott Dixon told Daily Mail Australia.

“She has already buried one son and now she has to bury another one,” he said.

Scott said that his brother was going through a rough time, as he struggled financially due to a series of tragedies including the breakdown of his marriage, and the deaths of their brother and father.

Shane had spent $5000 at the cruise’s casino on the Friday, and Scott claimed that his brother received free drinks, a $750 play voucher and a ticket for a future cruise.

In Australia, strict laws govern how gaming providers can advertise gambling, with promotions like the above, which may encourage someone to spend more than they intend banned.

However, cruise ships that operate casinos in international waters can bypass these laws, reported the Daily Mail.

After borrowing money from his family to repay the debt, Shane ended up spending another $4000 the following night, according to Scott.

"His brain was probably going 100 miles an hour. He probably thought, ‘s***, I’ve done it again. I can’t afford it and I can’t ask mum for more money," Scott said.

He added that P&O staff have been amazing and compassionate towards his mother.

A P&O Australia spokesperson said they won’t be commenting on the claims due to the coroner’s investigation that is underway.

Images: ABC News/ news.com.au

"The silence has been broken": Sad update on Molly the Magpie

In the vast realm of interspecies friendships, few stories have captured the world's attention quite like that of Molly the Magpie and Peggy the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Their unlikely bond, which blossomed into a heartwarming tale of companionship, has now taken a sorrowful turn, leaving many to question the bounds of bureaucratic decisions and the plight of animal welfare.

Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen, the compassionate duo behind Peggy and Molly's story, found themselves thrust into the spotlight as their pet dog Peggy and a wild magpie named Molly forged an extraordinary friendship. Their endearing camaraderie not only garnered a massive social media following but also led to the publication of a book celebrating their unique connection.

However, amidst the adoration and admiration from around the globe, whispers of dissent arose. A handful of complaints prompted wildlife officers to intervene, resulting in Molly's removal from the loving embrace of Peggy and her human family. The decision, made by the environment department, cited concerns about Molly's habituation to human contact and the necessity of finding a suitable facility for the magpie.

The outcry that ensued was swift and resounding. Supporters of Peggy and Molly decried the separation as cruel and inhumane, questioning the rationale behind tearing apart a bond so pure and cherished.

Now Juliette Wells, in a poignant video, has shared snippets of the affectionate bond between the two, accompanied by a heartfelt poem and narration expressing the anguish of their separation and pleading for Molly's return home:

"They came & told us they wanted to take you away
We couldn’t even picture what that would look like ?
I WILL NEVER forget that day .
If Molly had a voice what would he say ?
If Molly had a choice where would he stay ?
The Silence has been broken
People have Awoken
I haven’t been placed on this earth to hide
Let me soar again & be your guide
In unity & Harmony you will see
What the world needs right now is Peggy , Ruby & ME ❤
Lets keep focused on a positive outcome ❤❤"

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Peggyandmolly (@peggyandmolly)

Yet behind the facade of heartwarming footage lies an ongoing legal battle. Freya's delicate state, including brain injuries and other trauma, necessitates her being kept in an induced coma, a measure aimed at reducing further complications and providing her body with an opportunity to heal.

Fox, who organised a GoFundMe appeal for the devastated family, which has already raised over $60,000, says Freya is “not out of the woods yet”.

“We had some thorough chats with the incredible doctors about the potential prognosis and we are not out of the woods yet with risks of swelling in the brain and infection still evident. This could still be life threatening.

“We are keeping our girl in an induced coma for a few more days in order to give her body a chance to stay still and hopefully recover as much as possible.”

Mieka, remembered fondly as a bright and creative individual, had long harboured a passion for Taylor Swift's music and was eagerly anticipating her first live concert experience. Anger, sadness, boredom, anxiety – emotions that feel bad can be useful

Heather Lench, Texas A&M University

Remember the sadness that came with the last time you failed miserably at something? Or the last time you were so anxious about an upcoming event that you couldn’t concentrate for days?

These types of emotions are unpleasant to experience and can even feel overwhelming. People often try to avoid them, suppress them or ignore them. In fact, in psychology experiments, people will pay money to not feel many negative emotions. But recent research is revealing that emotions can be useful, and even negative emotions can bring benefits.

In my emotion science lab at Texas A&M University, we study how emotions like anger and boredom affect people, and we explore ways that these feelings can be beneficial. We share the results so people can learn how to use their emotions to build the lives they want.

Our studies and many others have shown that emotions aren’t uniformly good or bad for people. Instead, different emotions can result in better outcomes in particular types of situations. Emotions seem to function like a Swiss army knife – different emotional tools are helpful in specific situations.

Sadness can help you recover from a failure

Sadness occurs when people perceive that they’ve lost a goal or a desired outcome, and there’s nothing they can do to improve the situation. It could be getting creamed in a game or failing a class or work project, or it can be losing a relationship with a family member. Once evoked, sadness is associated with what psychologists call a deactivation state of doing little, without much behavior or physical arousal. Sadness also brings thinking that is more detailed and analytical. It makes you stop and think.

The benefit of the stopping and thinking that comes with sadness is that it helps people recover from failure. When you fail, that typically means the situation you’re in is not conducive to success. Instead of just charging ahead in this type of scenario, sadness prompts people to step back and evaluate what is happening.

When people are sad, they process information in a deliberative, analytical way and want to avoid risk. This mode comes with more accurate memory, judgment that is less influenced by irrelevant assumptions or information, and better detection of other people lying. These cognitive changes can encourage people to understand past failures and possibly prevent future ones.

Sadness can function differently when there’s the possibility that the failure could be avoided if other people help. In these situations, people tend to cry and can experience increased physiological arousal, such as quicker heart and breathing rates. Expressing sadness, through tears or verbally, has the benefit of potentially recruiting other people to help you achieve your goals. This behavior appears to start in infants, with tears and cries signaling caregivers to help.

Anger prepares you to overcome an obstacle

Anger occurs when people perceive they’re losing a goal or desired outcome, but that they could improve the situation by removing something that’s in their way. The obstacle could be an injustice committed by another person, or it could be a computer that repeatedly crashes while you’re trying to get work done. Once evoked, anger is associated with a “readiness for action,” and your thinking focuses on the obstacle.

The benefit of being prepared for action and focused on what’s in your way is that it motivates you to overcome what’s standing between you and your goal. When people are angry, they process information and make judgments rapidly, want to take action, and are physiologically aroused. In experiments, anger actually increases the force of people’s kicks, which can be helpful in physical encounters. Anger results in better outcomes in situations that involve challenges to goals, including confrontational games, tricky puzzles, video games with obstacles, and responding quickly on tasks.

Expressing anger, facially or verbally, has the benefit of prompting other people to clear the way. People are more likely to concede in negotiations and give in on issues when their adversary looks or says they are angry.

Anxiety helps you prepare for danger

Anxiety occurs when people perceive a potential threat. This could be giving a speech to a large audience where failure would put your self-esteem on the line, or it could be a physical threat to yourself or loved ones. Once evoked, anxiety is associated with being prepared to respond to danger, including increased physical arousal and attention to threats and risk.

Being prepared for danger means that if trouble brews, you can respond quickly to prevent or avoid it. When anxious, people detect threats rapidly, have fast reaction times and are on heightened alert. The eye-widening that often comes with fear and anxiety even gives people a wider field of vision and improves threat detection.

Anxiety prepares the body for action, which improves performance on a number of tasks that involve motivation and attention. It motivates people to prepare for upcoming events, such as devoting time to study for an exam. Anxiety also prompts protective behavior, which can help prevent the potential threat from becoming a reality.

Boredom can jolt you out of a rut

There is less research on boredom than many other emotions, so it is not as well understood. Researchers debate what it is and what it does.

Boredom appears to occur when someone’s current situation is not causing any other emotional response. There are three situations where this lack can occur: when emotions fade, such as the happiness of a new car fading to neutral; when people don’t care about anything in their current situation, such as being at a large party where nothing interesting is happening; or when people have no goals. Boredom does not necessarily set in just because nothing is happening – someone with a goal of relaxation might feel quite content sitting quietly with no stimulation.

Psychology researchers think that the benefit of boredom in situations where people are not responding emotionally is that it prompts making a change. If nothing in your current situation is worth responding to, the aversive experience of boredom can motivate you to seek new situations or change the way you’re thinking. Boredom has been related to more risk seeking, a desire for novelty, and creative thinking. It seems to function like an emotional stick, nudging people out of their current situation to explore and create.

Using the toolkit of emotion

People want to be happy. But research is finding that a satisfying and productive life includes a mix of positive and negative emotions. Negative emotions, even though they feel bad to experience, can motivate and prepare people for failure, challenges, threats and exploration.

Pleasant or not, your emotions can help guide you toward better outcomes. Maybe understanding how they prepare you to handle various situations will help you feel better about feeling bad.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
