Shaynna Blaze breaks her silence on feud with Scott Cam

Shaynna Blaze has finally addressed the allegations of a long-running feud with Scott Cam on the set of The Block.

For several years, there have been rumours that the judge and the host of the renovation show were butting heads on set, resulting in a seemingly permanent rift between them.

However, chatting to Daily Mail Australia at Channel Nine's 2024 Upfronts event on Wednesday, the 60-year-old interior designer denied there was ongoing beef between the two.

"Oh God, no, there's nothing going on between me and Scotty," she explained.

"There's no bad blood. People just make stuff up. It happens every year..."

When questioned about why such rumours about a feud had surfaced, Blaze suspected it might just be a tactic to keep the audience hooked, stirring the pot to give the ratings a nudge northward.

Shaynna was then asked what she thought about Scott taking a subtle swipe at her during a recent radio interview, she explained it's "all a bit of fun" and she hasn't taken any passing comments personally.

Blaze's clarification of the rumours comes just weeks after an anonymous source claimed she was at her wits end with Cam's unnecessary remarks.

"He's turning the set into a pressure cooker, making things a lot more strained than they need to be," a source told Daily Mail Australia in August.

"She is really getting sick of his pointless comments. They've all got a job to do and these comments are just making things more awkward and tense than it has to be."

Scotty infamously called Shaynna a b***h on national television back in 2017 after what he perceived as "unfair scoring" on the renovation show, in what many believed to be the start of their so-called feud.

Two teens turn themselves in over Sydney blaze

NSW Police have confirmed that two teenagers have come forward over the Sydney CBD blaze that gutted two buildings, one of them heritage-listed.

The fire broke out at 4pm, and as a locksmith informed Sky News Australia, a trio of teens could be seen running towards Central Station from the building soon afterwards. That same man also said that he had spoken to police about what he’d witnessed.

And as acting assistant commissioner Paul Dunstan later confirmed, “two young people handed themselves in at two separate police stations in the late hours of last night.

"We are speaking with these young people throughout the evening and they are now assisting police with our inquiries.

"I can further confirm we are aware of a further three or four other young people who were present during the fire."

He then asked for the teens - with their parents in tow - to come forward.

The state’s arson squad quickly launched an investigation, and could be seen at the

Randle St scene the following morning, a move that is considered standard practice for an incident of such a scale. A drone, reportedly equipped with infrared technology, was also seen.

What remains of the buildings is at risk of collapse, with closures in place to keep bystanders from harm, with experts fearing bricks could rain onto the neighbouring streets.

As such, investigators have thus far been unable to access the scene to get to the bottom of what caused the blaze.

“Our fire investigators, along with police forensics, will start to make those assessments but that will be some time," Acting FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said. "We have some engineers attending the scene and they will help guide our decisions around safety."

And while there have been no reports of death, the man who claimed to have seen the group of teens also mentioned to 9News that the kids had believed someone was in there.

“[They were] scared and frightened,” he said, before suggesting that it was especially because they knew “that one of the mates [was] still in the building.

"They are screaming upwards to the kid 'why are you still up there?'"

Images: 9News / Nine

Shaynna Blaze on divorce: "My whole life was turned upside down"

Shaynna Blaze has shared the emotional details of her divorce from ex-husband Steve Vaughan, saying she felt blindsided by her sudden marriage breakdown.

On Nine's Country Home Rescue, Shaynna opened up about her separation while speaking to her adult children Carly and Jess about the importance of having a family home as they embarked on a bold renovation together.

The Block judge, 59, announced her split from her personal trainer ex-husband in August 2018 after years of marriage.

Now, she has reflected on what the marriage breakdown meant for her family.

"I really need them to understand this is important to us as a family," Shaynna said.

She then hinted her break-up took her by surprise, telling producers, "In only a few minutes, my whole life was turned upside down."

"We sold our family home, my marriage broke down and all those things that give you security suddenly vanished."

Jess agreed the divorce was "quite shocking to our family".

At the time of her separation, Shaynna's children had bought a 130-year-old run-down house in regional Victoria to use as a location for a low-budget horror film they were making.

Carly and Jess had plans to flip it and sell it at a later date, but Shaynna now wants it to be a proper family home that will accommodate all of them, while documenting their renovation journey on Country Home Rescue.

Shaynna rarely speaks about her private life, but did tell TV Week magazine last year she was "very happy".

She added, "I'm taking my love life private. My life has been splashed out there more than I ever wanted."

The Block star violently attacked while walking dog

A man who violently attacked The Block star Shaynna Blaze while she was out walking her dog has been jailed.

Mark Christopher Surmon, 40, appeared at the County Court of Victoria on April 5 where he was jailed for 100 days for assaulting Shaynna.

The reality TV star was walking her dog when Surmon approached her from behind on April 18, 2020 and aggressively punched her in the head.

Blaze was then struck on her cheek causing her to trip and fall to the ground before she was stifled by Surmon’s hand as she attempted to scream.

“He placed pressure on her shoulders to keep her down while this occurred,” Detective Senior Constable John Connor told the court, news.com.au reported.

The court heard that Blaze had no opportunity to run from Surmon and the attack was unprovoked.

Surmon was jailed for 100 days and immediately appealed the sentence which was rejected.

His lawyer argued that he had schizophrenia and Surmon was further issued with a community corrections order to help with drug and mental health issues.

Blaze said she hoped her attacker was getting the help he needed to ensure incidents like hers don’t occur again.

“Crimes like this need to stop and punishment and rehabilitation are both important levers for our society,” she said.

“I hope he gets the help he needs so this doesn’t happen to anyone else”.

Blaze also runs family violence charity Voice of Change to ensure women have a safe space to speak.

She explained that she has struggled from past relationships and was a victim of domestic violence and wanted to help other women.

“This is my past and my personal life … I want other women out there to know that you can have a voice and there are people out there who want to give you a voice,” Blaze previously said.

“You can still live a great life, be successful and still keep your integrity no matter what happens to you.”

Images: Instagram

‘A gentleman with the mad soul of an Irish convict poet’: remembering Chris Bailey, and the blazing comet that was The Saints

Inala in the early 70s was bleak. A Brisbane suburb of wide dusty streets, treeless and bland. A planned community, meant to grow over time. Austerity, accented by the cheap houses – weatherboard, red brick, concrete – stifled the suburb like a blanket on a hot February night.

It was boring. Beyond boring. The only concession to communal childhood joy was the pool, and the crazy concrete skate rink. But if you wanted a creative outlet, you needed to search elsewhere.

Ivor Hay, (future Saints drummer), was heading to the picture theatre in Sherwood one Saturday night in early 1971, "and I saw Jeffrey [Wegener – another Saints drummer] with these two longhairs, Chris [Bailey] and Ed [Kuepper]. They were off to a birthday party in Corinda and asked me along. That was our first night."

Bailey was raised by his mum, Bridget, in a house alive with siblings – mostly girls, who looked after the kid. He got away with a lot.

“None of us had a lot of money,” Hay tells me. "Both Chris and I were raised by single mums in reasonably sized families. Chris’ mum was pretty feisty, with this Belfast accent which was just fantastic. They all looked after ‘Christopher’, he could do all sorts of things and they would accommodate him. His mum would have a go at him about the noise, but we’d just go to his bedroom and rehearse and bugger everybody else in the house!"

Kuepper taught Hay to play the guitar: Stones and Beatles and Hendrix. Hay passed the knowledge down to Bailey, who was keen to learn. Neither Kuepper nor Bailey learned to drive, so Hay became the driver in those wide suburbs where driving and cars were everything.

There was politics in Bailey’s house – his sister Margaret chained herself to the school gates to protest uniform policy – but this pervaded the town. The conservative government had no time for the young, and the police force did their best to make life difficult.

But there was a sense that these young men were making something new. As Hay says, "We used to sing The Internationale at parties. I don’t know if we were revolutionaries, but we had that sense that something was happening. [With the band] we were doing something that we thought was going to change something. Chris was particularly good at pushing things, at being anti-everything."

Out of Inala

To escape the suburb was to head north to the railway line. It was the lifeline to the centre of Brisbane – record stores, bookshops and other forms of life.

Kuepper remembers going into the city with Bailey. "We had intended to steal a record, and we went into Myers […] both wearing army disposal overcoats […] these two long haired guys walking into the record department with these overcoats […] surprisingly enough, we were successful!"

Like the railway line, Ipswich Road joins Brisbane to the old coal town of Ipswich. It slices through these western suburbs, carrying hoons in muscle cars and streams of commuters, the occasional screaming cop car or ambulance.

On Thursday nights, the boys used to sit at the Oxley Hotel, overlooking Ipswich Road, “just sit up there having beers, we wouldn’t have been much more than 17 or 18 at that time. Chatting about all sorts of stuff,” says Hay.

"Chris and Ed were comic collectors and Stan Lee was the hero […] there were political discussions, philosophical discussions. Those guys could talk underwater."

They talked and played and sang. And Bailey had the voice. It was a force, not just loud and tuneful, but full of snarl and spit.

Soon they had songs, and in 1976 scraped the money together to record and release their first single on their own Fatal Records label. (I’m) Stranded took Bailey out of Inala, out of Brisbane and into the world.

He never looked back.

A changed city

The Saints released three albums in as many years – (I’m) Stranded, Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds – before Kuepper and Hay returned from the UK to Australia, leaving Bailey to his own devices.

Bailey remained in Europe, releasing a cluster of solo albums and many Saints records over the next 40 years. He wrote some achingly beautiful songs. It is a testament to his talents as a songwriter that Bruce Springsteen recorded a versionof Bailey’s Just Like Fire Would in 2014.

There’s no doubt that Bailey and The Saints changed Brisbane forever. People around the world who love music know Brisbane exists because of The Saints, The Go-Betweens and bands like them.

Peter Milton Walsh (The Apartments) was one of many who benefited from The Saints legacy, "They blazed through our young lives like comets. Showed so many what was possible – that you could write your way out of town."

“Without The Saints,” Mark Callaghan of The Riptides/Gang Gajang told me, “we probably wouldn’t have started. ”

"They just made it all seem doable. It was like, ‘Well, they’re from Brisbane!’ So we started our first band, and at our first gig we covered (I’m) Stranded! We even took a photo of the abandoned house in Petrie Terrace with (I’m) Stranded painted on the wall. But it never crossed our minds to stand in front of this. It would be sacrilege, you know? And we were trying to work out a way that we could get it off the wall intact, because we recognised it was a historical document."

Chris Bailey isn’t the first of our creative children to leave this life behind and move on into memory. With their passing, like the returning comet, the past is freshly illuminated, allowing us to look back at our young lives. Back when the future was broad in front of us, urged on by voices like Bailey’s to open our eyes and see the world.

And Bailey’s was a unique voice. Kenny Gormley (The Cruel Sea) remembers him singing Ghost Ships, "But ah, I’ll never ever forget seeing Chris pick that shanty, alone at sea in a crowded room, holding us sway, wet face drunk and shining, quiet and stilled in storm, cracked voiced with closed eye and open heart. And that was Bailey, a gentleman with the mad soul of an Irish convict poet.“

This article originally appeared in The Conversation.

Celebrity Apprentice crowns winner after record-breaking season

Disgust as firefighter is charged for starting 17 blazes while on bail for “serious sex offence”

A volunteer firefighter has faced court after being accused of lighting multiple large blazes in Darwin with 17 counts of causing a bushfire.

Mike Richard Holden, 27, applied for bail in the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday after police raided his home and arrested him the day before.

The court, according to NT News, heard that Holden was on bail for alleged “serious sex offences” and was wearing an ankle monitor that placed him near the scenes of the fires within minutes of them starting between January and September last year.

Holden’s lawyer, Shane McMaster, said that Holden doesn’t fit the typical profile of an arsonist, who is a “loner”.

“He’s somebody who doesn’t fit that profile in my submission,” he said.

McMaster said that in the bail application, his client had called some of the fires in and attended others to fight the blaze.

McMaster explained that Holden had no prior criminal record, and the case against him was “obviously circumstantial”. McMaster also explained that Holden’s compliance with his bail conditions “barring these allegations, has been very good”.

Judge Alan Woodcock refused bail and said that while Holden was a young man with a supportive family, he was also charged with “very serious indictable offences” which were allegedly committed while wearing a tracking device.

Holden was remanded in custody and will return to court on February 26th.

"Hypocritical": Locals baffled by Sydney Harbour fireworks display in the midst of catastrophic blaze conditions

Sydneysiders were left baffled by a 20 minute firework display in Sydney Harbour that took place in the midst of a total fire ban on Wednesday night.

As wild bushfires and incredible winds have ravaged throughout New South Wales and Queensland within the past week, it is estimated the damage will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to repair, according to AFR.

The dangerous conditions from strong winds and extreme temperatures on Tuesday prompted a fire danger rating for the greater Sydney region for the first time ever.

While total fire ban remained in place for all of New South Wales on Wednesday, there were still fireworks seen over the CBD at around 9.50pm.

The display went on for over 20 minutes, with many locals taking to Twitter to label the fireworks as “hypocritical” and “insensitive”.

“Seriously, total fire ban, nearly 10 pm in a school night and there are fireworks galore going off in Sydney. P**s poor effort,” one resident wrote.

“One of my students told me his house almost burnt down yesterday,” another said.

“Now there's fireworks exploding everywhere in Sydney. Seems a little insensitive, sending sparks everywhere at a time like this.”

“How are fireworks allowed in Sydney on a day of total fire ban? Seems somewhat hypocritical given the tough stance that has been taken against individuals,” another local posted.

Dozens of fires are still ablaze throughout the east of Australia.

Firefighters are beyond stretched to their limits attempting to contain several of the out of control blazes.

The largest active bushfire is the Liberation Trail bushfire just west of Coffs Harbour - covering more than 150,000 hectares with a circumference of 1,000 km.

The NSW Rural Fire Services issued a statement that as of 10 pm on Wednesday, there were 69 fires burning across the state.

14 of those are at Watch and Act alert.

“Over 1000 firefighters remain in the field to protect properties and establish containment lines ahead of worsening conditions later this week,” the statement read.

"Everything is burning": Thousands watch in horror as iconic Notre Dame cathedral blazes

A fire has engulfed the roof of Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral and has toppled its spire as thousands of people watch on in horror at the iconic landmark’s destruction.

Notre Dame spokesman Andre Finot told French Media that “everything is burning, nothing will remain of the frame.”

The famous cathedral is one of France’s most popular tourist attractions and draws 13 million visitors each year.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that this is a “terrible tragedy” but the cathedral will be rebuilt.

“I’m telling you all tonight — we will rebuild this cathedral together. This is probably part of the French destiny. And we will do it in the next years. Starting tomorrow, a national donation scheme will be started that will extend beyond our borders,” Mr Macron said.

The cause of the blaze is unknown, and earlier on Monday, there were fears that the great bells could fall.

Paris Fire Department commander general, Jean-Claude Gallet, told reporters about the worry:

“There’s a risk that the great bells fall. If the bells fall, it’s the tower that collapses,” Mr Gallet explained.

“There are firefighters inside and outside.

“We need to win this battle and block the spreading of the flames. The most efficient action is from the inside. We are not sure if we will be able to stop the spreading of the flames to the North Tower.”

A crowd of hundreds has gathered outside the cathedral in shocked silence as they watched the 850-year-old building burn. Australian Divya Bala told news.com.au that watching the scene unfold was “shocking”.

“Everyone just stayed out watching, very calmly, very quietly,” she said.

“Some people were in tears, one older gentleman was holding himself up by the railing on the bridge and people were comforting him.

“But I was really struck by how calm everyone was.”

Scroll through the gallery to see the devastating before and after shots of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

The moment you missed on The Block: Judge Shaynna Blaze's heated showdown with Sara

Infamous The Block contestant Sara has ignited a war with judge and interior design veteran Shaynna Blaze, causing tension between the pair in last night’s episode.

Blaze offered Sara and her husband Hayden a design mentoring session after the couple came last for the third consecutive week – the offer, while accepted, caused Sara to throw a bit of a tantrum.

“There’s only so much as a human – any human – you’d be able to take,” Sara said of their negative feedback.

Before meeting with Blaze, Sara said she was filled with “dread. Dread, dread, dread, dread, dread” as she prepared for her session with the experienced judge.

While the interaction started off as civil, with Shaynna going through each room that had been previously judged and providing constructive criticism and tips, Sara was not appreciating the invaluable feedback.

The tips, which included how to nail this week's Master Bedroom challenge, was something that the other contestants were envious of, as they would have loved to learn first-hand from the expert and mogul herself.

But with Sara not being open to the critique, and Shaynna stepping foot inside the contestant's $75,000, last-placing bathroom, the interior designer’s patience started to wear thin.

“But, I guess it’s all open for interpretation," said Hayden to the designer after hearing her feedback, causing tension amongst the three.

Shaynna: “What’s your career?”

Hayden: “Project manager in construction.”

Shaynna: “Right. And yours?”

Sara: “Flight attendant.”

Shaynna: “So how are you meant to know what I’ve done for 30 years? Just putting it out there. That’s why I’m here.”

Shaynna then proceeded to advise the pair on different aspects of designing a master bedroom, touching on elements such as wall colourings, bedside tables, the lot.

But Sara wasn’t having it.

“It was … good advice. Whether or not she likes it is a whole other kettle of fish. I just can’t be bothered with high hopes again," said Shaynna.

“I actually don’t know if they really listened. They think they’ve got the direction absolutely perfect.”

Viewers at home took to Twitter to vent out their frustrations as many believed that the couple did not deserve to be mentored by the judge as they seemed less than grateful.

Sara woke with dread while every other contestant would have woken with excitement to get a 1:1 with Shaynna or Sheena as Sara likes to call her. #9TheBlock
— Nez (@fraggle73) 28 August 2018

Anyone would kill for this one on one time and hints from shaynna and yet Sara doesn’t care. Buying Blind: Why this Melbourne family of 5 nearly broke the experts

Thank you for listening to us, thank you for giving us this,” Kristen said to the experts.

Scroll through the gallery above to see the transformation of the home.

What do you think of the renovation?
Shaynna Blaze is not stranger to helping people move with her work on The Block and Selling Houses Australia, but as Now to Love reports that doesn’t mean it makes it any easier for her.

The celebrity interior designer has revealed just how hard it was to part with her four-bedroom property in the Melbourne suburb of Ringwood North last year.

"I thought it wouldn't get to me," Shaynna, 55, admits. "I help people make the transition every day, so I figured it would be easy.

"But when we were packing everything up, it became very personal and I realised how much stuff I'd accumulated."

The house had been a family home, and while her children Carly, 29, and Jesse, 28, had already moved out, it was hard to ignore the pangs of nostalgia.

"So many memories in that house," Shaynna laughs.

"I had to put myself in the Selling Houses shoes and just get it done. But I remembered how distressing it was. We ended up putting everything in storage."

Shaynna has now settled down in Hawthorn with her personal trainer husband Steve Vaughan, and is loving life in Melbourne’s inner east.

"The kids moved out, we needed to downsize and where we ended up was determined by what we could afford," Shaynna explains.

Take a look at the home Shaynna said goodbye to in the gallery above, it’s a stunner!

Have you ever downsized?
