11 weirdest museums in the world

While museums aren’t everybody’s cup of tea, odds are when you’re travelling you’re going to visit one.

Here are 11 of the world’s weirdest museums.

We’ve included images of the museums in the gallery above, in case any pique your interest.

1. Avanos Hair Museum, Turkey

One of the big points of interest in the rural Turkish town of Avanos, the Avanos Hair Museum may well just be a creepy excuse to collect human hair. It’s a huge collection though, with over 16,000 pieces!

2. Baku Museum of Miniature Books, Azerbaijan

A must-stop next time you find yourself in Azerbaijan. The Baku Museum of Miniature Books is dedicated to books of the tiny variety (yet seemingly not small enough to warrant a museum).

3. Cumberland Pencil Museum, UK

Fans of stationary rejoice! Home of the world’s largest colouring pencil (7.91 metres high), the Cumberland Pencil Museum is the Mecca for people who never got their pen license.

4. Icelandic Phallological Museum, Iceland

Maybe not a great option for the whole family (unless you’re giving your grandkids the birds and bees talk), but with 215 phallic objects on display there’s definitely plenty to see!

5. The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum, USA

It may seem weird to have an entire museum dedicated to barbed wire, but with more than 2,400 varieties of the stuff on display it may be worth a visit. It goes without saying you’re not allowed to touch the exhibits.

6. Meguro Parasitological Museum, Japan

If you’ve ever wondered about tapeworms, head lice and other parasites you’ve never heard off perhaps a visit to the Meguro Parasitological Museum. We recommend going on an empty stomach!

7. Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum, Japan

If you’ve always felt the National Museum of Australia lacked a sufficient Two Minute Noodle exhibit you might like Japan’s Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum, dedicated to these instant snacks!

8. Museum of Bad Art, USA

“Why see a classic, when I can observe some bad art?” is a question the owners of the Museum of Bad Art are banking on patrons asking. This is one museum where if you see an exhibit and you feel like you could’ve painted it yourself, you’re probably right.

9. The Museum of Broken Relationships, Croatia

An interesting place, but if you’re looking for a museum to take a date to, you might be better off with the International Museum of Toilets. A wooden watermelon is among the odd exhibits.

10. Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments, Netherlands

With more than 100 torture devices on display, this is one museum where you don’t want to get caught out for touching one of the exhibits. Gruesome sure, but an interesting look at history.

11. Sulabh International Museum of Toilets, India

Well, you can’t spend you whole trip looking at the Taj Mahal. A visit to the International Museum of Toilets raises sanitary awareness, and questions regarding your itinerary planning ability.

Related links:

5 tips for making affordable calls overseas

10 tips for sleeping on a plane

Surge in 10-year passport applications expected
