"She was the light of our lives": Family's tribute to hero kindergarten teacher

Eleanor Bryant, 43, put herself in harm's way to save preschoolers from a water tanker that crashed into the Macedon Ranges Montessori Pre-School in Riddells Creek on Tuesday.

Now, the mother-of-two and speech pathologist has been remembered for her caring and down-to-earth nature by her family.

Bryant's husband and his two young kids expressed their grief in a statement, saying they were "devastated by the loss".

"She was the light of our lives: a cherished mother, wife, daughter and sister, and beloved by all her family and enormous network of friends," the statement read.

"Her infectious smile, sense of humour and passion for life made her a joy to be around.

"There is an enormous hole in our hearts today.

"We thank the emergency services for their tireless work and the public for their beautiful tributes.

"We will miss her like crazy. We thank you for respecting our privacy at this difficult time."

Bryant has also been remembered for the impact she has made as a speech pathologist, with mum Becky Burton thanking her for changing her daughter Milla's life.

"I've never met someone that was so engaging, so down to earth, so caring and would do whatever it took [to make sure Milla was happy]," Burton said.

"[She was] the most beautiful mum and person just taken so tragically."

Bryant tragically died at the scene after the crash, while a three-year-old boy was injured and taken to the Royal Children's Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his arm.

He remains in hospital and is in a stable condition.

The driver of the truck was also taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition after the "experienced 68-year-old driver is understood to have suffered a medical episode".

Parents and family members have since visited the kindergarten and laid flowers and cards as a tribute to Bryant.

Family friend Walter Lucas held back tears as he remembered the beloved mother-of-two, saying: "She saved that kid's life. That kid is now going to go off and live their whole life. For her to take her life for that kid, she is more than a hero.

"She's a superhero."

Clinton Zammit, whose children went to the kindergarten, described the situation as "really sad".

"I feel sorry for the woman who lost her life, her kids waking up today and having no mother. An unsung hero to push away kids and not care about anything else but the kids.

"It hits home when my kids used to come here and there are other families involved.

"We are a close-knit community, we are small but have big hearts and this will affect the community for a while."

The pre-school is expected to remain closed for the coming weeks, and ongoing counselling has been offered onsite.

Images: Nine

Michael Schumacher attends first 'public' event since accident

Michael Schumacher has reportedly attended his daughter's wedding, making this his first public appearance in 11 years.

Gina Schumacher tied the knot with Iain Bethke at the family’s luxury villa in Mallorca over the weekend, and while Michael's attendance was previously unknown, several outlets have reported that he attended the special event.

The Formula 1 icon's wife, Corinna, has kept his condition private since his tragic skiing accident in 2013, with only an extremely small inner circle of people allowed to see him, therefore this marks the first time that Michael has been 'seen' by extended friends and family.

The Daily Mail reported that privacy was extremely tight at the event, with wedding guests required to leave their phones at the front door upon arrival.

The family also reportedly looked at hiring a large security team to keep photographers away.

The success of the event has reportedly raised hopes that the family will consider future opportunities for the Ferrari icon to be seen in public, with more people reportedly being let into the 'inner circle'.

Michael's son Mick, who has been dating 23-year-old Danish model Laila Hasanovic for two years, is reportedly engaged to her, and in January it was reported that she had been given approval to visit the F1 legend.

Updates on the former racer's health have been few and far between.

Late last year, Schumacher's former boss at Ferrari and close friend Jean Todt revealed: "He is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different, and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now, and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That's all there is to say."

Corinna also spoke publicly about the accident and her decision to keep Michael's condition private in a 2021 Netflix documentary.

"'Private is private’, as he always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible,” she said.

“Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael. What he really didn’t like was the press, the people, all the hype around him. That’s not what he wanted. He wanted to do the sport," she continued.

In the documentary she also said: “I miss Michael every day.

“But it is not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here.

“Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength. We’re together. We live together at home.”

Michael reportedly moved from his Swiss home to the exclusive Spanish villa where Gina's wedding was held in September 2020 according to the Spanish press.

According to The Sun, Michael spent much of his recent life at the $50 million villa, which is believed to have been adapted allowing a team of doctors and nurses to provide round-the-clock care.

Image: Instagram

And on their way home, that’s when the accident happened.

“We were having Sunday dinner as a family, and Poppie's aunty was with us and obviously, Poppie was as well. Father remembered for "instinctive act of bravery" before train tragedy

A family outing has ended in tragedy when a pram carrying twin girls rolled onto the train tracks at Carlton railway station in Sydney.

CCTV footage showed the family heading off on their outing just several minutes before tragedy struck.

They were walking down the footpath, with the father holding the pram and the mother pulling a trolley bag, before waiting to cross the road to the train station.

The parents had arrived on the platform via an elevator and taken their hands off the pram for a "very, very short period of time" when it began to roll, according to NSW Police Superintendent Paul Dunstan.

The 40-year-old father is being remembered for his bravery, after he jumped onto the tracks to try and save his twin daughters.

Horrified witnesses also tried to flag the train down, but unfortunately it was too late. Emergency services were called to the station at around 12:25 pm.

The father and one of the two-year-old girls were killed, and the girls' mother who witnessed the accident unfold was left "incredibly traumatised" according to the Superintendent.

Dunstan told reporters several hours after the tragedy that responding officers could hear crying from underneath the train.

“Police climbed under the train and rescued one of the children, who was thankfully unharmed, and reunited her with the mother," Dunstan said.

“Sadly, the other child, a two-year-old female, and her father who attempted to save the child, have passed away as a result of this incident.”

“Whether it’s a gust of wind ... we’re not quite sure. But it appears that the pram has instantly started to roll in the direction of the train lines.”

The father has been praised for his "brave and heroic" act.

“He’s gone into parent mode and tried to save his two young daughters that have fallen onto the tracks and in doing so it’s cost his life, but it’s an incredibly brave and heroic act,” Dunstan said.

The other daughter, who had survived, had fallen between the tracks and was "lucky" to have escaped injury, Dunstan added.

The train was heading from Cronulla to the City and wasn't due to stop at Carlton.

A police investigation is underway and the National Rail Safety Regulator had also been informed.

Premier Chris Minns described the incident as a “terrible, terrible tragedy”.

“This is a very confronting and sad day for the St George community,” he said.

“I hope over time they can gain some small solace knowing that the father died from an extraordinary, instinctive act of bravery.

“That’s not going to bring him or his little daughter back. But it shouldn’t go unremarked upon in the face of a terrible, terrible accident, he gave his own life to try and save his children.”

Images: Channel 9

Uber driver makes pensioner fork out thousands after minor accident

In a distressing incident, 80-year-old pensioner Judy Libby has claimed that she was coerced into handing over $2,500 to an Uber driver following a minor car accident in Melbourne's CBD.

Judy recounted her ordeal on Melbourne's 3AW Radio on Friday morning, describing the alarming sequence of events that unfolded after she accidentally hit the back of the Uber driver's car.

According to News.com.au, Judy explained that the driver was stationary when the accident occurred, causing a dent in the boot of his vehicle. The driver, claiming the damage had rendered him unable to work and support his family, demanded compensation. "He said, 'I’m an Uber driver, you’ve ruined the back of my car. I’ve got a wife and child to support; now I can’t work,'" Judy told the radio station.

Initially, the driver demanded $4,000, allegedly stating he had obtained a quote from a friend who was a panel beater. When Judy expressed her inability to pay such a sum, the driver proposed a reduced amount of $2,500. They arranged to meet at her local bank, but when the teller grew suspicious and refused the transaction, the Uber driver reportedly drove her to another bank where she was made to withdraw the money.

Judy described the driver's demeanour as very angry and the experience as a "nightmare". The situation took a further turn for the worse when she later received a legal letter demanding an additional $8,800 for the damage, with no mention of the $2,500 she had already handed over.

Concerned and distressed, Judy informed her daughter, who then reported the incident to the police. The case is now being investigated by the fraud squad. "I wasn’t travelling at a speed to do huge damage. I had no damage on my car, just a few scratches," Judy said. "And he had an older car too, so $8,800; no. I didn’t write it off, I just hit his boot."

3AW host Russel Howcroft condemned the incident as "disgraceful", particularly criticising the driver's actions of taking Judy to a bank against her will. "Fancy putting someone in their car and driving them to a bank branch," he remarked.

The investigation by the fraud squad will hopefully bring clarity and justice to Judy Libby's troubling experience.

Image: Lutsenko Oleksandr / Shutterstock

5 ways to avoid going overboard on a cruise

Falling overboard is the stuff of cruising nightmares (and it happens surprisingly more frequently than you might think. Just this year we’ve brought you two stories about passengers falling overboard, but this fishy fate is by no means unavoidable.

Here are five ways to ensure you keep your feet dry.

1. Limit your alcohol intake

If the prices weren’t enough of a reason to go easy on the sauce on your cruise, perhaps the risk of tipping over the balcony will persuade you. Think of it this way – the effect of alcohol on a cruise is the same as the effect of alcohol on dry land, but when you’re on a cruise you’re travelling through sometimes heavy seas at about 20 knots.

2. Stay in your room during inclement weather

If your ship is sailing into dicey conditions, you’re better off keeping to your quarters. You never know how a cruise liner is going to stand up to the ocean’s wrath, and even if you want a good view of Mother Nature’s nasty side, you’re safer below deck.

3. Keep clear of dark corners

It’s not a very pleasant thing to think about, but when there are 4,000 passengers on a cruise they’re not all going to be good eggs. Be aware of your surroundings, just as you would be on land, and be sure to report any suspicious activity to a crew member.

4. Pay attention during the practice drills

Even if you’ve been on 20 cruises it’s a good idea to pay attention during the practice drills. This will reinforce what you need to do in an event of an emergency, and might just save your life (or someone else’s by knowing where to find the safety gear).

5. Don’t re-enact the Titanic scene

Because going overboard will make you look like anything but, “The king of the world.”

Have you ever been on a cruise? Did you ever feel unsafe at any point? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.

AFP commander resigns after drink driving accident

Former Australian Federal Police commander Danielle Anne Woodward has resigned after she drunkenly crashed her car into a tree following a police function in Canberra.

The Olympic medalist pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge in the ACT Magistrates Court after blowing nearly three times the legal limit in November 2023.

Woodward had attended an end-of-year function on the night of the accident, and intended to walk home or catch an Uber, but felt unwell after drinking champagne, so she decided to take the short drive back home.

However, she crashed into a tree on her way home causing “extensive front-end damage” to her Mercedes-Benz.

After getting help from members of the public, she immediately reported the incident to her supervisor and told him she had alcohol in her system.

She also reportedly co-operated with lower-ranking officials who attended the scene, with the defence saying that she was "frank in her submission".

"She was certainly not belligerent," Woodward's lawyer Michael Kukulies-Smith told the court.

She was then arrested and taken to the police station for a breath analysis, which came back with a reading of 0.148.

A police statement of facts also said that officers found Woodward with a flushed face and sleepy, watery eyes.

“Police could smell a strong odour of intoxicating liquor emanating from [Woodward] and formed the opinion that [she] was well under the influence,” the statement of facts read.

The court also heard that Woodward had been experiencing a "high level" of stress from her job, so had "at times resorted to alcohol, in a way she has been able to control."

"The offending conduct is not only out of character … [but] her actions are usually the complete opposite. They're usually designed to benefit and protect the community," prosecutor Samuel Carmichael said.

Woodward's lawyer asked Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker to record a non-conviction, as this was a "one off" offence, and the media coverage of the accident had already caused her "an unusual degree of reputational damage", which has impacted her mental health and career.

While Magistrate Walker agreed to a non-conviction, she said that a general deterrence still needed to be served, with Woodward disqualified from driving for six months, taking into account a 90-day immediate suspension notice that was issued after the crash.

The Chief Magistrate told the court: "What ultimately influences me … is Ms Woodward is a woman suffering from ill health.

"It is often people of good standing in this community … who find themselves before the court for this type of offence."

She also said that Woodward had shown “obvious and palpable” remorse, and was not someone who would ordinarily demonstrate “this level of stupidity”.

Woodward was a highly decorated police officer who worked for the AFP for almost four decades. She became a commander in 2022 and received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2002.

In 2020 she was awarded the Australian Police Medal in the Australia Day honours.

Prior to her role in the AFP, she was a a triple Olympian in slalom canoeing and won a silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Image: ABC News

Tourist slapped with a fine while in a coma

An American tourist has been slapped with a fine while fighting for his life in a coma, after being involved in a devastating collision.

Rod and Barbara Maroney, an elderly couple from Phoenix, Arizona, were holidaying in Sydney and strolling down George Street, when Rod was hit by an e-bike riding down light rail tracks.

The 64-year-old retired aerospace engineer was crossing the light rail tracks in September 2023 and did not see the electric vehicle coming, with the collision causing him to fly into the air.

Rod had to undergo emergency brain surgery from his injuries and then spent the subsequent weeks in a coma.

Even now, in the weeks after the accident, Rod is still struggling to recover.

As the 64-year-old recovered in St Vincent’s hospital, Barbara was shocked to see a fine for $86 being shoved into the letterbox of her AirBnb by NSW police.

Despite the fact that E-bikes are not permitted on the footpaths of Sydney’s CBD, and are also banned on the light rail corridors, Mr Maroney was the one who was slapped with the fine.

The letter stated that Rod had committed the offence of “moving into rider’s path”, despite the fact that riding a bike along light rail tracks is not permitted, NSW Transport confirmed.

Barbara, who is a semi-retired lawyer herself, decided to get the help from a lawyer who contested the fine, and as a result, it was withdrawn.

“Him serving me while my husband is in the hospital in a coma was outrageous,” she told 9News.

“In the US, that would not be good service of process because my husband never lived at the Airbnb.”

“If he really wanted to serve the citation, he should’ve gone to the hospital and dropped it in my husband’s unconscious lap, I guess.”

After their ordeal, the couple wants authorities to take action over e-bikes in Sydney.

“We shed a lot of tears at night together, both of us grieving for our loss of the man he was,” she said.

“Why is Sydney’s council allowing silent, deadly bikes? Given the speed of the bike, Rod could have been killed.”

“Why are e-bikes not regulated like vehicles?”
