Aussie Olympian David Morris’ emotional call with mum battling cancer

Aussie aerial skier David Morris has shared an emotional call he made to his sick mum after his controversial finish at the Winter Olympics.

Morris came in at number 10, just missing the final in PyeongChang after a Chinese rival was marked higher despite falling after landing.

In December last year, the 33-year-old athlete was told that his mother Margaret had been diagnosed with lung cancer, leaving him with the difficult decision on whether to compete in the games or stay home to support her.

After his controversial exit, Morris shared a video call with his mum to 9NEWS.

"I'm so proud of you," Mrs Morris told her son during the call.

"How you handled yourself after your huge disappointment makes me really, really proud."

Morris said he forced himself to be selfish to not let the situation distract him from the competition.

Now, the only priority the Aussie skier has is to return to Melbourne to be with his mum.

"I'll come back and we can deal with everything as a family because we have been putting it off for months - all the emotion," he said.

"It hurts on the inside."

Morris only needed one skier to falter to progress to the final nine skiers and it looked as if he was going to make it through when China’s Jia Zongyang stumbled and fell after his landing.

But, the jump scored higher than Morris as the fall happened outside a four-metre zone after the runout.

In the final, Jia later took the silver coming behind Ukraine’s Oleksandr Abramenko.

Morris and his coach questioned the decision but ultimately accepted it with good sportsmanship.

"It is what it is," he said.

"It's a judged sport. Sometimes it sucks. Sometimes it's in our favour.

"We don't complain when it's in our favour. Aussie skier “robbed” at the Winter Olympics after rival falls over

It wouldn’t be the Winter Olympics if there wasn’t some sort of judging controversy, but the latest scandal to hit the games, involving Australian aerial skier David Morris, is leaving many viewers Down Under with a bad taste in their mouths.

Fans across Australia were shocked with Morris was denied a spot at the business end of the competition, with many feeling he was let down by the judge’s scorecard.

Morris, who is competing in his last Olympics, needed to place in the top nine to make the cut, and while his initial score of 111.95 had him in fourth, once the rest of the field started making clean jumps it was clear he was in trouble.

.@Aerialskier's final Olympic jump!

Congratulations on an amazing career, David! A legendary Aussie Olympian 🇦🇺🙌⛷️#Olympics pic.twitter.com/g0SdplLrxI
— 7Olympics (@7olympics) February 18, 2018

One of the competitors to follow Morris was Chinese athlete Jia Zongyang who was given a score of 118.55, despite clearly tumbling the landing as you can see below.

118.55 🤔 pic.twitter.com/7aCaGNbiFg
— 7Olympics (@7olympics) February 18, 2018

This left Morris to place in 10th, and pulled the curtain on his Olympic career.

“David didn’t have the perfect jump,” Seven commentator and Morris’s fellow freestyle skier Lydia Lassila said after the Australian was knocked out.

“This is a tough competition. Jia fell over after an uncontrolled landing.

“He was not in control on that landing. He fell over. So 118 for that I’m in disbelief. It’s really unfortunate.

“They (the judges) have got to seriously review what they have decided upon tonight.”

However, in true Australian spirit Morris was gracious in defeat.

“10th in Olympics is fantastic. It’s my third games. This is a fantastic competition. Everyone has been putting down huge jumps. Nothing to be disappointed about,” Morris said.

Gracious in defeat. @Aerialskier is all class. What a champion. 🇦🇺🙌⛷️ pic.twitter.com/nME0yAlgxv
— 7Olympics (@7olympics) February 18, 2018

“I think a couple of us are confused about that,” Morris said.

“My coach went and asked the judges, they gave him four metres of controlled skiing which is what counts for a landing.

“You can watch replays and slow mo and argue as much as you want. They gave him a four-metre stance where he had control.

“I can’t argue it. Tough luck for me. That’s how these sports go.”

What do you think? Do you think Morris was robbed?

Whale puts on stunning show for jet skiers in Queensland

A rather friendly whale has been caught on camera putting on the show of a lifetime for a group of jet ski riders in Queensland. The humpback can be seen swimming within centimetres of the tourists and happily posing for photos.

Whitsundays jet ski tour-guide, Ian Wilson, was taking a group of tourists to Daydream Island on Friday, when he spotted a blowhole about 600m away and asked everyone to switch off their engines.

They had planned to watch the baby humpback from a distance but 10 minutes later the whale had closed the gap to be about 60m away and wasn't stopping there.

Mr Wilson said the humpback hung around for more than an hour "going from ski to ski to ski" until the group left due to time constraints.

"They are quite inquisitive, but for it to hang around for that long in the Whitsundays that is the closest encounter I have ever had with one in that area," Mr Wilson said.

He described the experience as "once in a lifetime".

Watch the incredible footage in the video above. Have you had a close encounter with an animal you would like to share with us? 102-year-old skier retires from the slopes

Britain’s oldest skier, 102-year-old Hilda Jamieson, has called time on the sport she loves.

Hilda fell in love with the sport in the 1930s, learning on a set of homemade skis.

And she’s being skiing regularly ever since!

Unfortunately, a degenerative eye condition has left Hilda almost blind, and even though she has attempted ski-runs in recent months with her daughters acting as beacon guides, she’s decided to hang up her skis in the interest of her own safety.

“I love it so much, but I’ve had a good innings,” Mrs Jamieson told Metro UK.

Mrs Jamieson and her husband David, who sadly passed in 2002, were pioneers of the sport in Scotland, building the Glenshee Ski Centre, which has 27 ski lifts, 36 runs and is billed as one of the best winter sports resorts in the UK.

Related links:

98-year-old skier is king of the slopes

Granny scares off burglar with martial arts sword

60 years of royal family vacations in pictures

Skiers encounter rare snow leopard on mountainside

An Australian skier has captured the incredible moment an endangered snow leopard leapt across his path on a mountainside in India.

Owen Lansbury was following skiing guide Dave Marchi down a slope in the popular skiing town of Gulmarg in India's north, when the animal suddenly leaped in front of them.

Lansbury, who was wearing a camera on his helmet at the time, posted footage of the encounter on his Facebook page.

"I stopped just as it huddled in the snow, where it stayed for about a minute checking us out," Lansbury wrote.

"It then let out a solid roar and bounded away down the slope towards Dave, but scooted off into the forest, where we think it probably had a kill stashed. Pretty amazing experience!"

Related links:

The many things grandparents sacrifice for their family

20 crucial pieces of advice from you, the Over60 Community

People aged 5 to 105 reveal the best advice they’ve ever received
