Bunnings releases shocking CCTV footage of attacks on staff

Bunnings has shared CCTV footage of violent attacks on staff members, after a watchdog found that the store's facial recognition camera breached privacy laws.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has ruled the retail giant breached privacy laws when it used CCTV-linked facial recognition technology to capture the face of every person who entered 63 stores in NSW and Victoria in the three years to November 2021.

Bunnings is set to appeal the ruling, as they explained the cameras were installed to crackdown on shoplifting and violence towards staff in their stores.

Managing director Mike Schneider said, “FRT was trialled at a limited number of Bunnings stores in Victoria and NSW between 2018-2021, with strict controls around its use, with the sole and clear intent of keeping team members and customers safe and preventing unlawful activity.”

“Our use of FRT was never about convenience or saving money but was all about safeguarding our business and protecting our team, customers, and suppliers from violent, aggressive behaviour, criminal conduct and preventing them from being physically or mentally harmed by these individuals,” Schneider said.

“It was not used in isolation but in combination with various other security measures and tools to deliver a safer store environment.”

The company added that about 70 percent of violent attacks were committed by "the same group of people", as Bunnings shared a compilation of clips of the incidents, showing its staff punched, pushed, grabbed and threatened with firearms, knives and hammers in its stores.

“FRT provided the fastest and most accurate way of identifying these individuals and quickly removing them from our stores.”

In her ruling, Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind acknowledged the potential of the technology to protect against crime and violent behaviour, but determined, “However, any possible benefits need to be weighed against the impact on privacy rights, as well as our collective values as a society.”

“Facial recognition technology may have been an efficient and cost-effective option available to Bunnings at the time in its well-intentioned efforts to address unlawful activity, which included incidents of violence and aggression.

“However, just because a technology may be helpful or convenient, does not mean its use is justifiable.”

The ruling found Bunnings had taken the private information of customers without consent, failed to take steps to notify them and had left gaping holes in its privacy policy.

Commissioner Kind said the technology was an intrusive option that interfered with all customers’ privacy, not just high-risk individuals.

“Individuals who entered the relevant Bunnings stores at the time would not have been aware that facial recognition technology was in use and especially that their sensitive information was being collected, even if briefly,” she said.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said the ruling should be a reminder to businesses about their privacy obligations and has released a privacy guide for companies considering using facial recognition tech.

Court views footage of final moments before Clare Nowland was tasered

A registered nurse with nearly 50 years of experience has expressed her deep concern regarding the tasering of 95-year-old Clare Nowland, a resident at Yallambee Lodge nursing home in Cooma, New South Wales.

The incident occurred in the early hours of May 17, 2023, and resulted in Nowland's death, a great-grandmother suffering from dementia.

Senior Constable Kristian James Samuel White, 34, is currently on trial in the NSW Supreme Court facing manslaughter charges related to the incident. He has pleaded not guilty, asserting that he acted lawfully under his duties as a police officer.

During her testimony, Nurse Rosaline Baker recounted her alarm when she called triple-0 after Nowland had grabbed two steak knives and a jug of prunes from the kitchen. Following her call for help, White and Acting Sergeant Rachel Pank arrived on the scene after two paramedics. Together with Baker, they located Nowland in a treatment room. When White pulled out his taser, Baker admitted she was unfamiliar with the device and felt "kind of curious". However, her curiosity turned to horror when she heard a loud noise and witnessed Nowland being struck by the stun gun. "I was very, very concerned when she was falling to the ground," Baker stated in court.

The trial has revealed troubling details about Nowland's condition and behaviour leading up to that fateful night. Expert testimony indicated that her behaviour had escalated over the three months prior to her death. She exhibited increasingly anti-social behaviour, such as taking food from other residents, attempting to undress in public areas, and refusing assistance from staff. CCTV footage presented during the trial showed Nowland physically lashing out at staff members and even getting stuck in a tree, as well as footage showing the final moments of Nowland's life as she hid from emergency service staff – including Senior Constable White.

Nowland had been admitted to the hospital on April 16 and prescribed the anti-psychotic drug Risperdal to manage her aggressive behaviour after incidents involving punching and biting staff. Under questioning by defence barrister Troy Edwards SC, an expert acknowledged that Nowland's behaviour just before she was tasered could have been influenced by a recent reduction in her medication dosage.

The trial continues.

Images: 7 News

Never-before-seen footage shows moments after JFK assassination

Never-before-seen footage of aftermath of United States President John F. Kennedy's assassination has emerged, more than six decades after his murder.

The film footage will soon be sold through RR action, and shows the moment JFK's motorcade sped toward Parkland Hospital as Clint Hill, Jackie Kennedy’s Secret Service agent, shields both her and the president.

"This is remarkable, in colour, and you can feel the 80mph (130km/h)," said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of the auction house.

The 8mm home film was captured by Dale Carpenter Sr. and began with him filming other vehicles in the motorcade as it travelled down Lemmon Avenue toward the city centre.

The film then picks up after Kennedy was shot, and shows Clint Hill - who famously jumped onto the back of the limousine as the shots were fired - hovering in a standing position over the president and first lady.

"I did not know that there were not any more shots coming," Agent Hill, who is now 92-years-old, said.

"I had a vision that, yes, there probably were going to be more shots when I got up there as I did."

In an interview with People magazine, he said that the discovery of the film is “an emotional thing for me because I know what has happened. I know what I’m seeing in that film is a dead president.”

The assassination itself was famously captured on film by Abraham Zapruder, and according to Livingston, the executive vice president of the auction house, the footage captured by Carpenter is "unlike any other footage known to exist".

"This film captures a segment immediately following the Zapruder film, providing a fresh perspective on one of the most analyzed moments in history," he continued.

"Once you see it, you'll never forget Clint Hill's heroic efforts to protect Mrs. Kennedy, racing at 80 miles an hour in a desperate attempt to save the president's life as they sped to Parkland."

Carpenter's grandson, James Gate, said that his family had always known about the footage, but they rarely talked about the footage which was stored along with other family films in a milk crate.

It wasn't until after his grandfather's death from Parkinson's disease when his mother decided to hand down family mementos and the film landed in Gate's possession.

While he was initially underwhelmed by the film when he watched the footage, it was when he saw the aftermath of the assassination that he was "shocked".

In 2012, Gates got in touch with Agent Hill and his wife Lisa McCubbin Hill, to show them the footage.

Agent Hill's wife said that while knew about the events that unfolded on the tragic day, "to see the footage of it actually happen ... just kind of makes your heart stop."

“When you see the president’s limousine, you see Clint on the back of the car. To see the speed of the car and how precarious that was — Clint is still trying to protect the president and Mrs. Kennedy from whatever else might be coming.

"One slip and he would have gone flying off and he would have been killed,” she told People magazine.

Stephen Fagin, curator at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination on November 22, 1963, said: "These images, these films and photographs, a lot of times they are still out there. They are still being discovered or rediscovered in attics or garages."

The film will be up for auction in northeastern US city of Boston on September 28, with online bidding already underway.

Images: RR Auction / Public Domain

“This is the guy”: Shocking new footage of Trump shooting released

New footage has emerged from the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, as investigations continue into the shooting.

Graphic new bodycam footage has shown local authorities speaking to a Secret Service agent after the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was gunned down at a Trump rally.

The footage shows the moment authorities climbed onto the roof where Crooks was positioned, and captures the moment police identify the shooter as a suspicious person.

One man, who appears to be a Secret Service agent, tells a Beaver County Emergency Services Unit (ESU) officer that Crooks’ body appeared to be the person who was previously reported to them for suspicious activity.

“So this is the guy,” the agent says, as the Beaver County ESU officer replies, “This is him.”

The ESU officer also says a police sniper took photos of Crooks, including of him on a bicycle, according to the footage.

“That’s the sniper that sent the original picture and seen him come from the bike and set the book bag down and then lost sight of him,” the officer tells the apparent Secret Service agent.

Crooks’ gunfire grazed Mr Trump’s ear and hit three rally-goers, killing 50-year-old volunteer firefighter and married father-of-two Corey Comperatore, before the gunman was quickly shot and killed by a Secret Service agent.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley a Republican, called on the Secret Service to release more information to the public about the attempted assassination as the federal law enforcement agency faces fierce criticism over security failures at the rally.

“Federal agencies, particularly the Secret Service, have failed to be transparent with the American people,” Mr Grassley said in a statement.

“This assassination attempt is a matter of substantial public interest, and the public’s business ought to be public.”

Image credits: Beaver County ESU / Bethel Park School District

Leaked footage shows Olympic star's horrific animal abuse

The extent of dressage star Charlotte Dujardin's "error of judgement" has been revealed, just hours after she made the snap decision to withdraw from the Olympics just days before its commencement.

The British dressage star, who is a three-time gold medallist and the joint most-decorated British female Olympian, withdrew and accepted a provisional six-month ban when coming clean about her acts of animal abuse in the lead up to the Paris Games.

Just hours after announcing her withdrawal from the equestrian events, a disturbing video of a training session began to circulate, in which she is alleged to have beaten a horse with a long whip 24 times in one minute.

The video, first released by Good Morning Britain, was taken four years ago and allegedly showed the 39-year-old mistreating a horse when trying to get the animal to slowly trot during a lesson with a young student.

With the trainee rider mounted on the horse, Dujardin can allegedly be seen whipping the horse’s legs repeatedly.

The video has outraged many, with hundreds of people taking to social media to voice their shock and horror at the acts.

Leading British social commentator David Kurten wrote on X, “The cruel abuse of this horse by Charlotte Dujardin is horrific and a stain on our nation."

“Two urgent questions need answers: Did she whip horses regularly? Are dozens or hundreds of other dressage horses regularly whipped and abused by other trainers?”

Former editor of Horse and Hound Lucy Higginson also added, “It has profoundly shocked everybody in the equestrian world.”

The video was sent anonymously to the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), who made the choice to suspend Dujardin just days before the Paris Olympics are set to begin.

“The FEI has officially announced the provisional suspension of British Dressage athlete Charlotte Dujardin effective immediately from the date of notification, 23 July 2024,” it said in a statement.

“This decision renders her ineligible to participate in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games or any other events under the jurisdiction of the FEI.”

“According to the information received, the footage was allegedly taken several years ago during a training session conducted by Ms Dujardin at a private stable,” the organisation said.

The governing body said Dujardin had confirmed she was depicted in the video and had acknowledged that her conduct was “inappropriate”.

“Charlotte Dujardin requested to be provisionally suspended pending the outcome of the investigations and voluntarily withdrew from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and also confirmed that she will not participate in any competitions pending the outcome of the FEI’s investigation,” it said.

“The FEI condemns any conduct contrary to the welfare of horses and has robust rules in place to address such behaviour.”

When announcing her withdrawal from the Games, Dujardin said she made an "error of judgement", saying there was "no excuse" for her behaviour.

She wrote in a statement on Instagram, “What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment.”

Image credits: Instagram / Good Morning Britain

Rare footage captures secluded tribe emerging from the Amazon

Remarkable new footage has captured one of the world's most secluded tribes, who have been known for firing arrows at outsiders who get too close, as they emerged from the Amazon rainforest in Peru.

The tribe were spotted near several controversial logging sites that have been making clearings throughout the forest, decimating their home lands.

According to the Indigenous rights advocacy group Survival International, members of the Mashco Piro tribe, believed to be the biggest group of indigenous people living with no outside contact, were spotted near the Las Piedras River a few kilometres from tree-cutting projects in Southeastern section of the country.

“This is irrefutable evidence that many Mashco Piro live in this area, which the government has not only failed to protect, but actually sold off to logging companies,” local Indigenous organisation Fenamad’s President Alfredo Vargas Pio said.

Near the remote villages of Monte Salvado and Puerto Nuevo, the tribe emerged in search of food, with President Pio voicing concerns that violent fights could break out between loggers and the Indigenous people.

He also added that the outside loggers could potentially bring new diseases to the area, which could wipe out the tribe.

According to Survival International, Indigenous advocates have urged authorities to pull the certifications from the logging companies to protect the tribes.

Logging company Canales Tahuamanu has been granted permission to log on the jungle land since 2002 with its invasive activity now sprawled out over 193 square miles, The Washington Post reported.

The publication also reported that the firm also has a history of clashing with local tribes, although in the past, the firm said its workers have never reported seeing any Mashco Piro people and has complied with laws in Peru, where it is illegal to contact the tribe.

Despite the Mashco Piro tribe’s seclusion, they have had limited contact with outsiders, with most of their rare contact resulting in violence, as they have been known for fire arrows at tourists boats and park rangers as warnings not to approach the area.

Cheers, Beckhams!

Images: Instagram

Disturbing footage of dingo attacks revealed

Disturbing footage of dingo attacks have been released by rangers following multiple attacks in a popular camping spot that occurred just weeks apart.

Tourists have been warned to be wary of the wild animals after shocking footage emerged of a tourist being nipped while sunbathing.

The video comes just weeks before a 10-year-old boy was attacked and dragged underwater by a dingo at K’gari Island – formerly known as Fraser Island – on June 16.

The boy sustained puncture wounds to his shoulder and bruises to his collarbone because of the accident, which happened in front of a popular camping spot on the island.

“The boy’s 12-year-old-sister who was nearby reacted quickly and ran to assist him,” Assistant principal ranger Danielle Mansfield said.

“The family treated the boy for puncture wounds to his shoulder and arms and scratches and bruises on his collarbone and arm.”

Mansfield also said that rangers were closely monitoring the dingo responsible for the attack, which had blood splatters across its face and paws following the attack, although there are currently no plans to euthanise it.

Two months ago, a similar attack occurred where a primary school-aged girl was hospitalised following a dingo attack while swimming. The girl suffered bites to her head and fingers after the dingo attempted to drag her underwater.

Rangers have also released dashcam footage of another dingo chasing a young boy and an adult male, in an area close to where the 10-year-old boy was attacked, just two weeks before the unfortunate incident.

The dingo was euthanised for “poor behaviour”.

This comes a few weeks after another dingo was euthanised following a string of attacks, including a sunbathing tourist, a seven-year-old boy and a 42-year-old woman.

Dingoes are native to K’gari Island, but a few of them fail to show any wariness towards people, and are increasingly brazen as a result of people deliberately or unintentionally feeding them, rangers said.

“We have increased patrols in the region to monitor the wongari’s (dingo’s) behaviour and pass on dingo-safe messaging to campers and visitors,” Mansfield said.

“These animals are capable of inflicting serious harm, and they have bitten children and adults, and some are quite brazen and are not fleeing when yelled at or when someone brandishes a stick.”

“People think it won’t happen to them, but it can happen to anyone and that’s why rangers are providing dingo-safe information to as many people as possible,” she added.

“We don’t want any incidents on K’gari, and people must understand that dingoes are wild animals and should never be fed or interacted with.”

Images: Queensland Department of Environment and Science / News.com.au

How a driver proved his innocence after hitting young girl

A driver who knocked over a child on a narrow Melbourne street has his dashboard camera to thank for proving he wasn’t speeding.

On April 20, Muhammad Danish turned down a narrow street in Brunswick East in Melbourne when a young girl ran onto the road in front of him.

Danish slammed on the brakes before coming to a stop and knocking the girl on the road.

It was all captured on camera.

The girl’s father then rushed over and slammed his fist on the bonnet of Danish’s car.

Luckily, the girl was not seriously harmed but the situation has taken an emotional toll on Danish.

He told A Current Affair he wished he could’ve done more.

"It was very hard for me for three or four days. I couldn't do anything. It kept replaying in my mind and my mind was just simulating the situation 100 different ways," Danish said.

He is relieved that the child was ok but said if he hadn’t captured it on camera, he may not have been able to prove his innocence.

"This video evidence really saved my life because if police listened to the statements I could have been charged and (found) guilty," he said.

The footage has been viewed hundreds and thousands of times online, with the majority of viewers offering their support to the driver.

"Even police told me it's not my fault. I was thinking I could have done something better to not hurt that girl, but people's messages and comments really supported me," Danish said.

Kidsafe Victoria’s Jason Chambers said the incident serves as a safety reminder to parents and guardians.

"Supervision is a really important key in keeping children safe around roads, car parks and driveways," Chambers said.

"For kids under five, that means an adult holding their hands at all times around these areas.

"Transport-related incidents are one of the leading causes of death and injury in Australia.

"In 2022 we saw there were four child pedestrians under eight who died and we usually see over 120 who are admitted to hospital."

Huge broadcast blunder sees new footage of late Jock Zonfrillo mistakenly aired

Footage from the delayed Masterchef Australia featuring late host Jock Zonfrillo was accidentally made available for streaming.

Channel 10, the network behind the hit cooking competition series, had previously vowed to postpone the series in the wake of Zonfrillo’s death. In a statement shared on social media, they had written that they were “deeply shocked and saddened at the sudden loss”, and that “MasterChef Australia will not air” on its anticipated premiere week- nor any sooner than May 8.

However, in a tragic broadcast blunder, 17 minutes of content made it online, showing Zonfrillo alongside his fellow judges - Melissa Leong and Andy Allen - as they welcomed special guest Jamie Oliver, and their contestants.

Zonfrillo in particular had presented a former contestant - who had previously left the show in 2021 to prioritise his mental health - with an apron, before asking how he was doing.

The clip was removed as fans and mourners drew attention to the mistake, but the damage had been done, and the upset was prevalent.

As one insider told The Daily Mail, the future of the show was in the hands of the late chef’s wife, Lauren Fried, and family.

“It will really come down to Jock’s family and what they feel he would have wanted,” they said, despite the network itself and the sponsors connected to the series reportedly believed to be onboard with proceeding with the new season.

“Commercially, and in terms of timing, this is a disaster. It is simply diabolical,” the source continued. “But not even a major TV network would be ghoulish enough to put anything other than the wishes of Jock’s family first and foremost.”

While the future of Masterchef Australia remains unknown, Zonfrillo’s co-hosts are taking the time to process their devastating loss, with both breaking their silence to share touching tributes to their friend on social media.

“Four years ago, the three of us stood on a precipice and leapt together,” Melissa wrote, before describing the impact the late chef had had on her life, and how he was “always supposed to be the bulletproof one who outlived us all.”

She went on to note everything she admired about him, from his kindness to his ability to carry “far more on your shoulders than most could ever know.”

“This all feels too raw to process still, I suspect it will for some time,” she concluded. “Such is the impact of a life lived so large, with so much levity and entirely on your own terms.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Melissa Leong | FOODERATI (@fooderati)

Andy’s post began in a similar manner, with the chef opening up on how Zonfrillo had changed their lives, and how they never could have anticipated how close they would all grow.

“You've become such an inspirational and important part of our lives. “Stay awake!”: Incredible bodycam footage of Jeremy Renner rescue

WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT - VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED.

It’s been three months since Jeremy Renner almost lost his life to a horrific snow plough accident, and new footage has surfaced from the incident.

In a gut-wrenching video, medics can be seen desperately trying to save the Hawkeye actor after his 6,500kg Snowcat vehicle ran him over on New Years Day, 2023.

Renner was left in critical condition with extensive injuries at the scene of the incident in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

The Marvel star was using his snow plough to clear a path out of his home following a massive snowstorm, according to the New York Post.

The mighty storm saw over 35,000 people without power in the area.

New police bodycam footage from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office showed the scene just moments after Renner’s devastating accident.

The footage shows a team of five medics in a desperate attempt to save the star, who suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopaedic injuries.

“It was horrible. I thought he was going to die, man. I’m holding him and his colour is just going,” a person at the scene said.

Renner’s accident occurred just moments after he stepped in to save his nephew, Alexander Fries, from the path of the snow plough.

Police bodycam footage captured Fries explaining what had happened to his uncle.

“He went up and turned around, got out to tell me something and then that’s when it started coming at me, like, full force,” he told officers.

“That’s when he tried to jump back in there. Right where his blood is at, that’s right where it all happened.”

“He tried to jump on it, into the thing, and it took him under,” he added.

An emergency call from the incident was also released, which heard the actor’s neighbour telling emergency services that Renner had been “crushed” by the snow plough.

On the call, the frazzled neighbour can be heard asking for the emergency crew’s time of arrival as he explained Renner’s “shallow” breaths were “getting shorter” and that the actor had started to “drift off” to sleep.

Renner lost a significant amount of blood and underwent surgeries with round-the-clock care from medics after he was flown to Renown Regional Medical Centre in Reno, Nevada.

His frantic neighbour, who happened to be a doctor, applied a tourniquet to Renner’s leg to stop the bleeding.

Renner was released from hospital in January and has been recovering at home since then.

The actor opened up about the chilling events for the first time in an exclusive interview with US ABC News anchor Diana Sawyer.

He shared that he refuses to be “haunted” by the harrowing accident.

“I shifted the narrative of it being victimised or making a mistake or anything else,” he told Sawyer.

“I refuse to be f**king haunted by that memory that way.”

The actor also revealed the harrowing detail of him writing his “last words” to his family as he didn’t think he’d make it through.

“I’m writing down notes on my phone. Last words to my family,” he said, holding back tears.

Image credit: Instagram/Washoe County Sheriff’s Office

"No-one is above the law": Pauline Hanson weighs in on wild Lidia Thorpe CCTV footage

Pauline Hanson has urged police to investigate the moment Greens senator Lidia Thorpe lost control outside a strip club in Melbourne last weekend.

Senator Thorpe was captured on CCTV as she became embroiled in a verbally abusive argument with a stranger in the early hours of the morning as she filmed bystanders from the door of a taxi.

The One Nation senator said she wants Victoria Police to investigate the matter to see if Senator Thorpe broke the law during her tirade.

“I think Victoria police should be carefully examining that footage to determine if Senator Thorpe has broken the law,” Senator Hanson said.

“The Australian Human Rights Commission might also consider examining the footage for possible breaches of Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. I think the people subjected to her abuse on the weekend should come forward and see that she is held accountable, because the Senate has shown it’s too gutless to do so.”

“No one – least of all an elected representative of the people – is above the law.”

Ms Hanson went on to say that Ms Thorpe was not an appropriate representative for Victorians.

“Many Victorians would be asking if Senator Thorpe had any intentions of fairly representing them in Canberra given her obvious contempt for parliament and for those Australians who do not share her Aboriginal heritage, and even her contempt for those who do share Aboriginal her heritage but not her views,” she said.

“That contempt is on full display in this footage and has been during incidents in which she has verbally attacked Aboriginal elders, or protested at public events, and even when she has spoken on the floor of the Senate.”

Hey Melbourne, Australia:
How did someone like Lidia Thorpe get into parliament? 🧐 pic.twitter.com/w8VT9tCbjF

— Meanwhile in Melbourne (@meanwhileinau) April 16, 2023

The incident, which occurred outside a strip club at 3 am and was captured in its entirety on CCTV, clearly shows Senator Thorpe circling a group of men waiting outside the club before pointing her finger at them and shouting about the size of their genitalia.

In the confrontation, Senator Thorpe can also be seen walking up to a man with his back to the wall of Maxine’s Gentleman’s Club before shouting abuse.

Ms Thorpe has now been banned for life from the Brunswick strip club, as manager David Ross told news.com.au that he had now formally banned the politician in a letter that was sent to her office.

Dalai Lama forced to apologise following bizarre footage of him and young boy

The Dalai Lama has apologised following the controversy surrounding him kissing a young Indian boy on the lips and asking him to “suck” his tongue.

The exchange, which occurred at an event for India’s M3M Foundation in March 2023, has since gone viral on social media, with the spiritual leader’s office releasing a statement to address the situation.

On behalf of the Dalai Lama, the statement reads he “wishes to apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused”.

“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras,” the statement said, also saying he “regrets” the interaction.

The leader of Tibetan Buddhism, Tenzin Gyatso, was hosting students and members of the foundation at his temple in Dharamshala, India, where he lives in exile.

In the footage, the boy is seen approaching the microphone before asking, “Can I hug you?”

His Holiness then responds, “OK, come” and ushers the boy onto the stage.

The 87-year-old then motions to his cheeks and tells the child “first here” and the boy gives him a hug and a kiss.

He holds the boy’s arm and turns to him, saying “then I think fine here also”, pointing to his lips.

The Dalai Lama proceeded to grab the boy’s chin and kiss him on the mouth as the audience laughed.

“And suck my tongue,” he tells the boy, sticking out his tongue.

The two press their foreheads together and the boy pokes out his tongue briefly before stepping away as the spiritual leader gives him a playful slap on the chest and laughs.

He can then be seen offering the boy spiritual advice, telling him to “look [to] those good human beings who create peace, happiness” and not “not follow those human beings who always kill other people”.

The clip sparked outrage in India, with some describing the footage as “creepy” and “disgusting”, while his supporters insisted he was just “joking around”, local media reports.

The clip has also gained a lot of traction on Spanish-language social media.

“This video is scandalous,” Colombian journalist Vicky Dávila shared on Twitter. “The Dalai Lama kisses a boy who approaches him on the mouth. The attendees applaud and laugh instead of condemning this aberration.”

In March, the official Twitter account for the Central Tibetan Administration shared a snippet of the second half of the interaction.

Tibet.net wrote, “During his meeting with students and members of M3M Foundation at courtyard of Thekchen Choeling Tsuglakhang, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama advised a young Indian boy to look up to a good human being who always work for cultivating peace and happiness in the world,”

The Dalai Lama made headlines back in 2019 following a sexism controversy after he said that if his successor were a woman, “she should be more attractive”.

Following the sexism scandal, his office was forced to issue an apology, explaining that his “off-the-cuff remarks, which might be amusing in one cultural context, lose their humour in translation when brought into another”.

In 2018 he made waves online after a remark he made on a trip to Sweden, suggesting that refugees should return to their homes and help rebuild their countries because “Europe belongs to Europeans.”

Rebel fighters share eerie footage of abducted Kiwi pilot

Rebel fighters in Indonesia’s Papua region have released terrifying footage of Captain Philip Mehrtens, who they kidnapped last week.

The New Zealand pilot touched down in Paro village on February 7th to pick up 15 construction workers who had been building a health centre in the remote Papua province.

The rebel group set fire to the Susi Air plane and released all five passengers on board the flight, but held onto Mehrtens as a hostage.

The group have said they will be holding Mehrtens until Indonesia recognises Papua’s independence.

In a series of videos, released to The Associated Press, a man understood to be Mehrtens is surrounded by rebels holding rifles, spears, and bows and arrows.

“Indonesia must recognise Papua is independent,” he says in one, seemingly under duress.

“I took him hostage for Papua independence, not for food or drinks,” Rebel leader Egianus Kogoya says in another one of the videos.

“He will be safe with me as long as Indonesia does not use its arms, either from the air or on the ground.”

Indonesian officials are believed to be making efforts to secure the Kiwi pilot’s release.

The West Papuan National Liberation Army (TPNPB), who are responsible for Mehrtens' abduction, has also issued a warning to Australia.

“This pilot is a citizen of New Zealand,” a statement from Sebby Sambom, a spokesman for the TPNPB armed wing, said last week.

“TPNPB considers New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, America, Europe, all are responsible. The US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand has supported the Indonesian government, trained The Indonesian National Police, supplied weapons to kill us West Papuans from 1963 to today. They must be held accountable.”

Violence in the region has seen a sharp increase over the last year, with dozens of rebels, security forces, and civilians killed in the name of demanding indolence from Indonesia.

Image credits: The West Papuan National Liberation Army
