Mother dies after ambulance fails to arrive

A mother from Queensland has tragically died while waiting for an ambulance, after she called 000 complaining of chest pain.

Cath Groom called paramedics just before 10:30pm on Friday after growing increasingly concerned about persistent chest pain, but was left waiting more than an hour and a half for the ambulance to arrive.

Given the nature of Groom's symptoms, her case was deemed urgent, and she should've been tended to by paramedics within 15 minutes.

It is believed that Cath was found dead by her teenage son while still waiting for the ambulance to arrive, the day before her 52nd birthday.

Her friends and family have taken to social media to pay tribute to the “amazing mother” and to express their “deepest shock, grief and sadness” at the news of her sudden passing.

“She was and will always be my favourite human on this earth, I loved her to bits we were like a brother and sister I’m going to be lost without her,” one person wrote.

“What an absolute shock. Such a beautiful girl taken way too soon,” another said.

Ms Groom had long been a single mum after she was left to raise her son on her own after her husband died when the boy was just a baby.

“Rest In Peace Sis, may you rest easy now with Dad and your life’s love and husband Warren,” her sister wrote on social media.

The shock death has renewed calls for the Queensland and federal government to address ambulance delays, with Australian Medical Association Queensland president Dr Maria Boulton saying the state’s healthcare system is “not good enough”.

“This is what happens because the system is under such strain, we know that our healthcare workers do the best they can in a system that is completely broken,” she told the Today Show.

“This is not on them but it also affects them because they don’t want to lose any lives.”

“Dig a hole in my chest”: Supermodel reveals double cancer fight

Supermodel icon Linda Evangelista has shared the devastating details of her cancer battle, after being diagnosed twice in five years.

In a candid interview with WSJ magazine, the 58-year-old revealed why she chose to "keep it quiet" and only tell a handful of people close to her about her health battle.

Evangelista was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 after a routine mammogram, and decided to undergo a bilateral mastectomy: a surgical procedure to remove both breasts.

"The margins were not good. [I chose this treatment] due to other health factors, without hesitation, because I wanted to put everything behind me and not to have to deal with this.

"Thinking I was good and set for life. Breast cancer was not going to kill me."

Four years later in 2022, Evangelista felt a lump on her chest and an MRI revealed cancer was present in her pectoral muscle.

"I just went into this mode that I know how to do – just do what you've got to do and get through it," she said. "And that's what I did."

"Dig a hole in my chest," she recalled telling her doctors.

"I don't want it to look pretty. I want you to excavate. I want to see a hole in my chest when you're done. Do you understand me? I'm not dying from this."

After another round of surgery, she was told the outlook was good for the future, but there is always a possibility the cancer could return.

"Well, once it's come back, there's a chance," she recalled the oncologist's words.

"I know I have one foot in the grave, but I'm totally in celebration mode."

Image credits: Instagram / Getty Images

10 home remedies for heartburn

If you dread the end of a meal due to heartburn or acid reflux, you’re not alone. But it’s not just the discomfort that is the issue – severe cases can lead to further issues such as esophageal cancer.

If you are finding that medication isn’t working for you, try some of these simple home remedies for some relief.

Licorice

Eat a small amount of plain black licorice to help relieve symptoms of heartburn. Licorice can help with many digestive system issues such as stomach ulcers.

Aloe vera juice

Visit your local health food store where you can purchase aloe vera juice to keep in the fridge at home. The natural healing properties of aloe vera can offer some soothing relief.

Sitting up

It’s very natural to lay down after a big meal, but this can actually make your heartburn symptoms worse. Give yourself a few hours to digest your meal before getting horizontal. It may help to eat dinner earlier so that you have enough time to digest before bed.

Baking soda

Mix a teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water, and drink to relieve heartburn pain. Use this method sparingly as it can cause a stomach upset if used too much.

Chewing gum

When you chew gum, you swallow more often which helps to keep reflux symptoms at bay.

Avoid exercise

Don’t get your heart rate up too much after eating either, as exercise can lead to heartburn.

Adjust your bed

Pop a couple of books under the legs of the top of your bed so that your head and shoulders are higher than your feet. This can help alleviate heartburn and reflux.

Ginger

A natural anti-inflammatory, ginger is often used as a way to treat gastrointestinal issues. Try it in your cooking, or make yourself a cup of ginger tea after eating.

Find triggers

Some people know what causes their heartburn (such as caffeine, wine, chilli or citrus), so this can be an easy way to avoid the pain starting in the first place. You could also try keeping a food diary to see if you can pinpoint what is causing your discomfort.

Get comfortable

Try to avoid clothing that is too tight or uncomfortable, as this can exacerbate your heartburn.

Related links:

Grandmother retires after 52 years walking kids to school

9-year-old raises $100,000 for sick kids

Wonderful moment newborn twins meet for the first time

99-year-old woman wakes up to find raccoon-like creature sleeping on her chest

We’ve heard of wake up calls, but this is something else entirely.

A 99-year-old woman in the US has woken to the disturbing sight of a kinkajou sleeping peacefully on her chest. The big, furry racoon-like creature is traditionally found in rainforest in South America.

The woman was startled (quite understandably) when she noticed the creature sleeping on her chest, which jumped out of bed and fled to the attic when she woke up.

The woman’s friend Cathy Moghari was able to lure the animal out of the attic and take it to a veterinarian. Ms Moghari said, "I start thinking, 'How are we going to get this animal out?' So I googled kinkajou sounds and found a video. And I was holding it up to the ceiling, and we hear a rumbling. And, sure enough, it came out to the opening that we had in the ceiling."

With the animal now safe it seems as though all’s well that ends well, but there may be a couple of sleepless nights for the 99-year-old woman in the coming weeks.

Related links:

Hero cat shows anxious dog how to escape

Petition to put Fred Hollows on $5 note gains support from high profile Aussies

Can you find the 6 words hidden in this picture?

Make a planter box from a chest of drawers

Don’t throw out your old chest of drawers when you can repurpose them into a stylish planter box. You can place it on a covered balcony, or even inside, and it won’t take too long to put together.

Step 1: Choose your drawers

While any drawers will work well, try to keep in mind how you want it to look. If you are aiming for a wild and free drawer garden you could go for a three, four or five drawer chest. If you were thinking of a few key plants nested among some storage drawers, you could go for a chest with eight or more square drawers.

Step 2: Decide on your colour scheme

Next up, decide on what colour you want your drawers to be (if your drawers are already in pretty good condition you can skip this step). You can either just stain the wood or go for a completely new look by painting them.

Step 3: Protect the wood

You will now need to coat the drawers inside and out with polyurethane. On the inside of the drawers that will house your plants, you will need two to three coats to stop the wood from rotting.

Step 4: Allow for drainage

The water needs somewhere to go, so you will need to drill some holes in the bottom of the drawers if they are going to be outside. If you are keeping the drawers inside you can skip this step.

Step 5: Add lining

Now you need to line your drawers to help hold the soil in place and soak up the water. Grab yourself some coconut fibre basket liners from your local hardware shop.

Step 6: Begin planting

Choose your plants depending on where your drawers are going to sit. For instance in an outdoor area, you could go for fresh herbs or some pots of colour. Indoors you might prefer to use succulents as they don’t require too much water.

Step 7: Maintenance

You don’t want a dripping chest of drawers, so simply water your plants with a spray bottle instead of a watering can. Spray close to the root (rather than the leaves) whenever you think they need watering.

Image credit: Eclectically Vintae / Grizzly Bear Modern

Related links:

How to make your own tinted jars

How to revamp a lampshade

The grandkids will love this homemade spray chalk

Paralysed from the chest down, this artist creates beautiful paintings using only his mouth

When he was 26, Moses Hamilton began participating in an art program as part of his recovery after a car accident left him paralysed from the chest down.

Speaking with the Huffington Post, Mr Hamilton shared that his first class brought him down. “It was so hard to do anything with my mouth [that] I told myself I couldn’t do this.”

He gave up – left the program. With a few kind words, the teacher gave Moses some mouthpieces, encouraging him to try again someday. Now, 12 years after that first class, Moses has created over 200 paintings, which he sells on his website.

Now 39, Moses calls his style “exaggerated impressionism”, and it certainly calls to mind the works of Van Gogh. “It sets me free from being in a wheelchair. I might not be moving my body, but I am moving something on the page. I’m creating my own moments, freedom on the canvas.”

You can learn more about Moses at his website, or follow his daily activity on Facebook.

Related links:

The classroom where seniors and children learn together

These tattooed seniors show off their body art

Four sisters posed for a photograph once a year for 40 years and the result is amazing
