“Our hearts go out to the whānau”: Man who died saving daughter remembered for his courage

<p dir="ltr">A New Zealand man who died saving his daughter from a rip has been remembered by loved ones for his courage and the sacrifice he made for his family.</p> <p dir="ltr">On Saturday, November 12, Tauranga man Reon Wilkeepa was enjoying the water at Moturiki Island just off of Mt Maunganui on the North Island with his 16-year-old daughter, 14-year-old son and several nephews when things went wrong.</p> <p dir="ltr">In a statement, Mr Wilkeepa’s family said his daughter had jumped into the sea and was caught in a rip when conditions changed.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Wilkeepa jumped in to save his daughter, holding her head above the surface and lifting her onto the rocks.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He noticed that she was struggling and jumped in straight away, no second thought, and got her out of the rip by being under her to lift her out. He gave all his strength and energy in a sacrifice to save her,” they said in the statement.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The family tried everything to help him out but the rip was too much and he went under.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Even Mr Wilkeepa’s son jumped in to help, holding his dad above the water’s surface before pushing him onto a surf lifesaving boat.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He is a hero like his father. It is a story of love of a whānau who would give everything for each other, including their lives.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The 43-year-old was unresponsive when he was pulled from the waves by surf lifesavers.</p> <p dir="ltr">Rescuers performed CPR but Mr Wilkeepa could not be revived.</p> <p dir="ltr">The family said Mr Wilkeepa was a strong swimmer and devoted dad, noting that he didn’t die because he was out of his depth but because he sacrificed himself.</p> <p dir="ltr">Following his tangi (traditional Māori funeral), Mr Wilkeepa will be buried on ancestral land at Motti Island, next to his sister.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He is terribly missed by his mum, dad, sister and multitude of nieces, nephews and cuzzies,” the family said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nikki Tuhakaraina, Mr Wilkeepa’s sister, posted a heartbreaking tribute to her brother on Monday.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It is with a shattered heart that I announce the tragic and sudden death of my Brother and Rock of our whānau, Reon Wikeepa,” she wrote.</p> <p dir="ltr">Ms Tuhakaraina said her brother’s body was brought home to their parents’ home for two nights.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Then we will take him back home to Motiti Island for this final night at our Marae.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service chairmen Jamie Troughton said the conditions on Saturday were tricky, with 1.5m swells and large amounts of water moving through the area after a storm the previous night.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Unfortunately this all unfolded outside our patrolling area and out of sight, on the other side of Moturiki Island, but we got there as soon as we could, both with lifeguards on foot and with an IRB out through some challenging conditions,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Our IRB crew picked the patient up out of the water and got them back to the beach as fast as possible and we were able to start resuscitation efforts straight away, alongside other emergency services.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Troughton said the tragedy was “really raw” for the lifeguards, particularly those who comforted Mr Wilkeepa’s family while they tried to resuscitate him.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It was a really raw, heart-breaking situation and it was impossible not to feel the grief and loss, but I’m proud of the professional way our team handled the situation and looked out for each other,” Mr Troughton said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Our hearts go out to the whānau.”</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-f82ffb22-7fff-b5e0-fa86-f8665c668f59"></span></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Facebook</em></p>

"Peace, comfort and courage": Dame Deborah James farewelled

<p>Dame Deborah James has been farewelled at a private funeral in London after losing her five-year battle with bowel cancer. </p> <p>The cancer campaigner, also known as Bowel Babe, died on June 29th at age 40.</p> <p>A service for the mum-of-two, who raised £7.4 million ($12.8 million) for multiple cancer charities in her final weeks, was a private service for family and friends which took place in West London's St Mary's Church.</p> <p>Local police shared their sorrow at the event taking place, tweeting: "Incredible and inspiring, Dame Deborah James! Your memory will live forever!</p> <p>"Our thoughts are with the family and friends! Wishing you peace, comfort and courage at this time of sorrow," they said.</p> <p>Deborah's husband and two children were among the procession that followed the hearse through the streets of the suburb in a sombre tribute. </p> <p>The 40-year-old's wicker coffin was adorned with roses named in her honour at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year.</p> <p>Among the close friends and family in attendance were a small number of famous faces, including TV presenters Lorraine Kelly and Gaby Roslin. </p> <p>Deborah's husband, Sebastien Bowen, gave the eulogy during the service, while their son Hugo, 14, and daughter Eloise, 12, read poems.</p> <p>Ahead of the day James's brother Benjamin James penned an emotion tribute to his older sister on social media.</p> <p>"Saying bye is never going to be easy, but knowing you achieved more than any of us could ever dream of…and so, so much more…makes it that little bit more bearable," he said. </p> <p>"Take it easy up there. “When in doubt, wear red”: Julie Bishop’s courageous callback

<p>In celebration of International Women's Day, Julie Bishop has shared one of her iconic fashion moments. </p> <p>Bishop posted a photo to Instagram of her red satin heels that are studded with diamontes, which she famously wore on the day she resigned as foreign minister from the Australian parliament.</p> <p>"'No nation can reach its full potential unless and until it embraces the skills, talent, energy and ideas of its entire population and that must include the 50% that is female.'," she captioned the post, along with a red shoe emoji.</p> <p>The quote is a call back to a speech she made in 2018 at the Global Summit of Women, where she highlighted the importance of striving for gender equality. </p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Teen with “a lot of courage” nabs her dream home at auction

<p dir="ltr">Though she’s fresh out of high school, an 18-year-old has managed to buy her very own dream home.</p><p dir="ltr">Angela - whose last name has been withheld - beat three other bidders to the punch at the Saturday auction of a 600-square-metre house with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage.</p><p dir="ltr">An estimated 40 onlookers witnessed the sale and were reportedly shocked when they realised the 18-year-old had won.</p><p><span id="docs-internal-guid-99e45ef7-7fff-5fa8-1f6a-06c3d143cc5b"></span></p><p dir="ltr">The TAFE student secured the property for $1.025 million, after bidding began at $940,000.</p><p></p><p dir="ltr">Angela was able to afford the million-dollar price due to a medical payout she received when she was younger, </p><p dir="ltr">The teen received substantial compensation from the hospital where she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, after it was discovered she could have been diagnosed sooner.</p><p dir="ltr">When she realised she had won the auction, Angela reportedly burst into tears of happiness.</p><p dir="ltr">Martin Millard, the managing director of the company that ran the auction, said Angela’s win was incredible.</p><p dir="ltr">“I went up and said congratulations with a little tear in my eye. Image: news.com.au</em></p><p dir="ltr">With decades of experience in the real estate industry, Mr Millard said he’s never seen anything quite like what he witnessed at Saturday’s auction.</p><p dir="ltr">“I’ve seen rich parents’ kids get given houses and things like that,” he said.</p><p dir="ltr">“And I’ve seen poor parents give their kids houses.</p><p dir="ltr">“I’ve never seen an 18-year-old turn up to an auction where there’s multiple bidders and win with her own money.”</p><p dir="ltr">Mr Millard added that it was unusual to see young people buy their own home, but that it wasn’t impossible.</p><p dir="ltr">Though he has seen 20-year-olds buy homes off their own back, he said there was something different about this that stood out to him.</p><p dir="ltr">“Eighteen is a lot younger, you don’t see many 18-year-olds,” he said.</p><p dir="ltr">“My kids’ dad is a high profile real estate (agent) and yet none of my kids have gone out to an auction and displayed that ability.”</p><p dir="ltr">After finishing her end of school exam last year, Angela is studying a Certificate Three in Early Childhood.</p><p dir="ltr">Speaking to <em><a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/news/teenage-battler-buys-1m-home/?rsf=syn:news:nca:news:spa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">realestate.com.au</a></em>, she said instantly fell in love with the home but “didn’t know what to expect” from the auction.</p><p dir="ltr">“I just fell in love with the place as soon as I saw (it),” Angela said.</p><p dir="ltr">“I didn’t know what to expect. “Patience, confidence, courage, solidarity”: Prince Albert of Monaco's health update and personal message

<div class="post_body_wrapper"> <div class="post_body"> <div class="body_text "> <p>Prince Albert II of Monaco recently tested positive for COVID-19 last week, and has finally given a health update to the curious public.</p> <p>The reigning monarch is the second royal to contract the deadly virus, and over the weekend, People Magazine was able to give a look into the Prince’s condition.</p> <p>The 62-year-old is improving his health slowly and steadily as he continues to work from the confines of his home, under his doctor’s orders.</p> <p>“A little news. Condition unchanged. Little fever, little cough,” Prince Rainier III, who is the son of Princess Grace of Monaco told <em><a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://people.com/royals/prince-albert-health-update-after-coronavirus-diagnosis/" target="_blank" title="People Magazine. ">People Magazine.</a></em></p> <p>“Vital signs all good. The doctors are satisfied for now.”</p> <p>Prince Albert, who falls into the category of high-risk coronavirus patients, is undergoing regular temperature checks, and is consistently receiving news on his blood oxygen levels.</p> <p>An insider to the family has said the king messages, emails and calls ranging from celebrities and politicians to regular everyday people has been touching.</p> <p>Issuing a statement on his behalf, the Palace said Prince Albert was grateful and “touched by the many expressions of sympathy that have come to him from around the world.”</p> <p>“His Serene Highness wishes to thank all those who have shown him their support.”</p> <p>The prince tested anonymously last week in a bid to avoid being treated differently in the healthcare system.</p> <p>The royal exhibited mild flu-like symptoms and was later confirmed to have the virus by the labs of the hospital named after his late mother, Princess Grace of Monaco.</p> <p>It is understood Prince Albert is still unsure of where he could've come in contact with the virus.</p> <p>The royal signed off his official palace statement with a handwritten message of “patience, confidence, courage, solidarity” in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.</p> <p>There are concerns for 71-year-old Prince Charles, who Prince Albert was with just days prior to his diagnosis as both royals attended the WaterAid Summit on March 10.</p> <p>Thankfully, it is believed Prince Charles did not come into contact with Albert during the event, and he has gone so far as to avoid handshakes during engagements and events since the beginning of March.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="post-action-bar-component-wrapper"> <div class="post-actions-component"> <div class="upper-row"><span class="like-bar-component"></span> <div class="watched-bookmark-container"></div> </div> </div> </div>
