"This is crazy": MasterChef Australia 2024 winner crowned

MasterChef Australia has crowned its 2024 winner!

Nat Thaipun has emerged as the winner of the coveted title and took home a whopping $250,000.

In the intense finale, the final two contestants Josh Perry and Nat Thaipun had 75 minutes to cook up something spectacular for the judges using black peppercorns as the key ingredient.

While Perry went with a rib-eye with some brussels sprouts and peppercorn sauce, with a spin on the vegees and some pureed sauce, Thaipun went with a Thai twist on a hearty pub meal, the scotch egg.

In the first round, Thapun managed to secure a total of 36/40, while Perry walked away from round one with 33/40.

In the second round, the contestants were asked to recreate renowned British chef Claire Smith's "Core-teaser", an incredibly detailed version of the classic Malteaser, with 113 steps to follow.

Both contestants struggled with the dessert, but Perry ended up struggling the most with one of the dish's key elements which resulted in his malt sugar ball going "pear-shaped".

Perry "absolutely nailed it" despite missing an element of the dessert, and Thaipun was "pretty bang on" with the flavours of the dish, but the judges thought her texture was off.

Despite this, it was the extra points in the first round that gave Thaipun the advantage of winning the show.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "I'm shocked": Queen of the jungle crowned in I'm a Celeb finale

The 2024 season of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! has concluded with the coronation of a new monarch. No, it’s not some royal lineage we’re talking about; it’s the queen of reality TV herself, Skye Wheatley.

After weeks of enduring the culinary horrors of the jungle and the occasional emotional breakdown, Australia has spoken and Skye is officially their jungle royalty. Her reign over the camp was nothing short of spectacular, featuring riveting moments such as her triumph over creepy crawlies, her dramatic monologues about missing Wi-Fi, and of course, her unforgettable friendship with that one tree that seemed oddly supportive.

In an “incredibly close” result that had us all on the edge of our seats (or couches, let’s be real), Skye managed to outshine her fellow campmates and secure the coveted title of Jungle Queen. But it wasn’t just about the glory; it was about the charity, too. Skye walked away with $100,000 for Bully Zero, proving once and for all that you can battle both bullies and bugs and emerge victorious.

In her post-victory interview, Skye expressed her shock at the win, saying, “I’m shocked.” Truly, her eloquence knows no bounds. “I feel absolutely blessed to have had this opportunity, and to go through the things I went through with these boys.”

But behind those eloquent words lies the heart of a true champion, one who faced her fears head-on and emerged triumphant, all while looking fabulous in a khaki jumpsuit.

Before her jungle adventure, Skye confessed that she thought the public expected her to “fall flat on my face”. Well, Skye, the joke’s on them because you soared like a majestic eagle, or at least like a slightly disoriented possum.

And let’s not forget the emotional rollercoaster that was the finale. Tears flowed like the Brisbane River as the top three reunited with their loved ones. It was a moment of pure emotion, a stark contrast to the usual scenes of celebrities eating bugs for our entertainment.

As we bid farewell to another season of jungle shenanigans, we can’t help but reflect on the memories created, the friendships forged, and the questionable food choices made. Here’s to Skye Wheatley, the queen of our hearts and the jungle alike. Long may she reign, or at least until the next season starts.

And to all the celebrities who braved the jungle, whether voluntarily or not, we salute you. May your next adventure be slightly less bug-infested and involve significantly more room service.

New host Robert Irwin had the last word to longtime host Julia Morris: “From the bottom of my heart, I have loved this so much," he said. "It’s been so much fun.”

Images: Network Ten

Aussie street crowned "world's coolest"

Global media company Time Out have released their official list of the world's coolest streets, with one busy street in Melbourne's inner north coming in first place.

What makes a street cool? Well, according to the publication, each street's food offerings, drink options, cultural delights, nightlife and overall sense of community are the main factors that were taken into consideration when they made their list.

To create the 2024 lineup, the publication had their global team of local expert editors and contributors each make a case for the coolest street in their city.

Melbourne's High Street claimed the top spot local Time Out Melbourne editor Leah Glynn praising the road's "epic restaurants, hidden bars, live music venues and boutique shops".

Glynn said that the street’s “bona fide cool status” comes down to one thing - “its unique, something-for-everyone local businesses”.

The street itself is easily accessible from the CBD via the 86 tram line and criss-crosses the suburbs of Northcote, Thornbury and Preston.

Hollywood Rd, one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong came in second. Pre-dating LA's famous entertainment district, the street itself is home to incredible restaurants including Michelin-starred Tate Dining Room.

It's also home to the Man Mo Temple and the Mid-Levels Escalators, the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system.

East Eleventh in Austin came in third, as it "encapsulates the city's spirit" for packing so many venues in a short quarter-mile.

One other Australian street made it into the list of the top 30 coolest streets and that street is Sydney’s Foster St, which came in 23rd.

“Along with neighbouring Campbell St, it’s part of the inner city precinct known as the Hollywood Quarter,” Time Out said.

“Despite the dazzling name, the quarter brings low-key cool vibes, and is bordered by Central, Thai Town, and cool suburbs Surry Hills and Darlinghurst.”

Here is Time Out's Top 10 coolest streets:

High St, Melbourne

Hollywood Rd, Hong Kong

East Eleventh, Austin

Guatemala St, Buenos Aires

Commercial Dr, Vancouver

Jalan Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Rua da Boavista, Lisbon

Arnaldo Quintela, Rio de Janiero

Chazawa-dori, Tokyo

Consell de Cent, Barcelona

Images: South China Morning Post via Getty Images

"I was not alone": Another royal diagnosed with cancer

Not long after King Charles announced his cancer diagnosis, Crown Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia felt inspired by his "dear cousin and friend" and decided to go public with his own prostate cancer diagnosis.

In a statement, Prince Alexander shared that he was moved by Charles’ courage in sharing his diagnosis with the public, as royal health matters are usually kept private.

The 78-year-old royal then shared details of his own medical intervention.

"The love of all of us who know him, and of his people, we deeply care for him, will support His Majesty in persevering and winning this most important battle. The news that it is early stage gives high hope," he said.

"The unfortunate news about cancer is not something you wish to hear.

"And I can say it personally, as I very well know how you feel once you hear it. How frightening and terrifying it is also for the family, how all the feelings get mixed up, and how you cannot think about anything else."

He then revealed: "I can say it now because I only recently defeated cancer.

"I had avoided speaking about it, as it is a personal matter concerning only me and my family, but King Charles' openness moved me and encouraged me to also speak up," he added.

"I am sharing this now, because this kind of tragic news can encourage people to react and take care of their health."

He added that news of King Charles' cancer diagnosis and his honesty about getting a check-up had resulted in a rise in online searches and appointments for medical check-ups in the UK.

“That is why people should hear my story, to see it is something that can happen to all of us,” he said.

“But when we are responsible, the outcome can be good.”

He shared details of his own treatment, which began two years ago, after results from an MRI found a cancerous growth.

"At that moment, I was terrified. But I was not alone.

"I am not speaking about family and friends who knew this and shared their support, which meant so much and cannot be described in words, but also all the other people who are fighting this disease."

He then underwent pre-intervention tests, surgery, and mandatory checkups, and has since received “the most joyous words from my doctor — ‘All is clear now’.”

He then urged the public to be more vigilant about their health, and to not put of their doctors appointment any further.

“Be responsible with yourself, listen to the doctor’s advice, and monitor your health,” he said.

“Preserve it and nurture it as the greatest wealth and gift you will ever receive.”

Images: Getty

All of the incredible royal jewels Queen Mary just inherited

In a weekend filled with regal splendour and historic significance, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark not only ascended to the esteemed title of Queen but also found herself adorned with the resplendent Danish Crown Jewels.

The symbolic transfer of these extraordinary treasures, formerly belonging to Queen Margrethe, marks a momentous chapter in the Danish monarchy, and for Mary, it's a journey into the rich history of royal glamour.

The Danish Crown Jewels, a collection with a lineage spanning centuries, tell a story of devotion, legacy and timeless elegance. Initiated by Queen Sophie Magdalene in the 1700s, each subsequent queen has contributed to and enhanced the collection, resulting in four dazzling "parures", or sets, each a testament to the enduring craftsmanship and artistry of Danish royalty.

The Emerald Set: A Gift of Love Across Generations

At the heart of the collection is the Emerald Set, a masterpiece featuring diadem, necklace, brooch and earrings adorned with emeralds and brilliant-cut diamonds. Originally gifted to Queen Sophie Magdalene in 1723 by King Christian VI, the set exudes a captivating blend of history and sophistication. As Queen Margrethe has demonstrated in the past, the pieces can be worn together or detached for a versatile, regal allure.

Pearl Ruby Set: A Timeless Elegance in Red and White

The Pearl Ruby Set, with its origins in the late 1600s, boasts a pearl necklace from Queen Charlotte Amalie, complemented by a matching pearl, ruby and diamond brooch and earrings. The ensemble, enhanced by Queen Caroline Amalie in the 1840s, mirrors the colours of the Danish flag. The set's adaptability, such as the pendant attachment to the pearl necklace, reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation.

Brilliant Set: Diamonds that Sparkle with History

The Brilliant Set, featuring a brilliant-cut diamond necklace, floral bouquet brooch and earrings dating back to 1840, was the choice of Queen Margrethe for her son Frederik's wedding. This set, rich in symbolism, is a dazzling testament to the enduring sparkle of Danish royalty. Paired with the Floral Aigrette tiara, it adds a touch of timeless grace to any royal occasion.

Rose Cut Set: A Delicate Affair with Rose-Cut Diamonds

The Rose Cut Set, with necklaces and brooches fashioned from rose-cut diamonds, whispers tales of Princess Charlotte Amalie from centuries past. Worn sparingly by Queen Margrethe, it holds a unique place in the collection, and its rare appearances evoke a sense of antiquity and refinement.

For Queen Mary, this accession to the Danish Crown Jewels is not just a privilege but a responsibility to carry forward the legacy of elegance and grace. These jewels, worn by every Queen of Denmark since the 1700s, are not merely adornments; they are a connection to the nation's history and a symbol of continuity.

Reserved for special occasions, such as state visits and the New Year Reception, the Danish Crown Jewels will now find a new muse in Queen Mary. Ensconced within the walls of Rosenborg Castle when not in use, these jewels remain a source of pride for Denmark, a tangible link to its regal past.

As Queen Mary steps into this new chapter of her royal journey, the Danish Crown Jewels will undoubtedly witness many more moments of joy, solemnity and regal radiance, reflecting the enduring spirit of a nation intertwined with its royal heritage.

Images: Instagram / Getty Images

Crown Princess Mary set to make history

Crown Princess Mary is set to make history, after a surprise announcement from Queen Margrethe has shaken up the Danish royal family.

On New Year's Eve, Queen Margrethe, who is currently Europe's longest-serving monarch, announced that she would be stepping down as the Danish monarch from January 14th, making her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, the country's new King.

The Crown Prince will be known as King Frederik X, and his wife, Australian-born Crown Princess Mary, will be his Queen Consort, and will be known as Queen Mary.

While there have been monarchs known as Queen Mary in the past, the Tasmanian native will be the first ever Australian to hold the title.

Unlike the British royal family, King Frederik and Queen Mary will not be crowned in a coronation service.

Instead, a proclamation of the new reign will be made at Christiansborg Palace on January 14th, as the prime minister has proclaimed each new monarch on the balcony of the Danish palace since the early 1900s.

The announcement from Queen Margrethe was made during her annual New Year's Eve speech, where she reflected on having surgery on her back in February 2023.

“The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future – whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation,” she said in the televised speech.

“I have decided that now is the right time. Princess Di misquote in final Crown season sparks outrage

Fans of The Crown have shared their fury over a quote from Princess Diana, after details of a pivotal scene from the royal drama have emerged.

The sixth season of the show, which will be released on Netflix on November 16th, features a key part of Princess Diana's life, in which she dedicated much of her time lobbying for an international treaty banning landmines and her support of victims.

Just three weeks before her death in a car crash in 1997, she visited Bosnia and Herzegovina to meet with affected communities.

In the upcoming episode of the show, Diana – played by Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki – tells her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed, played by Khalid Abdalla, about the horrors of the explosives and how they are responsible for thousands of deaths.

“A man called Ken Rutherford drew my attention to it. He started the Landmine Survivors Network. After his jeep hit a landmine in Somalia he lost both of his legs,” Diana explains to her boyfriend on-screen.

Diana then makes a bold statement, likening stepping on a landmine to her ill-fated marriage to Prince Charles.

“He said to me every survivor has a date of the day they stepped on the landmine. He said, ‘Mine was December 16, 1963’. I said, ‘Mine was 29 July, 1981 — my wedding day’.”

In the scene, Dodi laughs in response.

The inclusion of the presumably fictional quote has been criticised by royal biographer and Majesty magazine editor Ingrid Seward, who had a personal relationship with Diana.

“Diana would never have said anything like that. I think it is an unfortunate comparison,” she told The Sun.

“I think the mere fact that The Crown is depicting Diana’s life and her death is exploiting her memory so they can put into her mouth anything that they want to — however distasteful people might find it.”

Seward went on to emphasise the significance of landmine awareness to the late princess.

“It was very important – it was her big thing and it was a great success too. It is something that she will always be remembered for,” she told the publication.

"Finally!": 2023’s Sexiest Man Alive crowned

Patrick Dempsey has been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2023!

The 57-year-old actor known for his role as Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy snagged the title from last year's winner, Marvel heart-throb Chris Evans.

In his interview with the publication, the actor said that he will use his new-found status to promote “something positive”.

“I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life,” he said.

“It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”

When asked about his reaction to finding out he was 2023's Sexiest Man Alive the actor joked that it was a long-time coming.

“I was completely shocked, and then I started laughing, like, this is a joke, right? I’ve always been the bridesmaid!” he joked.

“I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good.”

Introducing PEOPLE’s 2023 #SexiestManAlive, Patrick Dempsey. 🔥 https://t.co/4eYnCAG1Zr pic.twitter.com/5V0xVblnaE

— People (@people) November 8, 2023

The father-of-three also joked about how his children, Talula, 21, and 16-year-old twins Sullivan and Darby, will react to this news.

“They’re just going to make fun of me and pick on me and figure out every reason why I shouldn’t be,” he said.

“Which is good, they keep me young.”

Funnily enough, his newfound status was also met with confusion, mostly from the younger generation who have no idea who he is.

“Who the hell is Patrick Dempsey?” one confused Gen Zer wrote.

“You all are making up new people every day; who is Patrick Dempsey?” another commented.

This left many Millennials feeling old.

“People ... not knowing who Patrick Dempsey is making me feel like a grandma. What do you mean you didn’t grow up watching Grey’s Anatomy, and you weren’t obsessed with Derek Sheppard since you were 10,” one commented.

“There is an is actual difference in being 26 vs. being 23! Because I am seeing 23 yr olds not know who Patrick Dempsey is,” another added.

And not everyone who is a Millennial agreed with People's choice.

"I mean… yes back in the day. But seriously? How is it not someone who is hot right now? I haven’t even seen/heard him mentioned in years," commented one person.

Is it 2005?” another wrote.

“Um, he is so 2007,” a third commented.

Regardless, Dempsey has aged like fine wine and many have said it's about time.

“Finally! Ain’t nobody under this post showed me a white man finer!"

Image: People Magazine/ X

Queen Camilla meets . . . Princess Margaret?!

In a collision of regal proportions, the world witnessed an unforgettable convergence of the fictitious and the real, as the one and only Helena Bonham Carter, famous for her portrayal of the indomitable Princess Margaret in seasons three and four of The Crown, found herself in the splendid company of none other than the Queen Consort herself, Camilla, at Clarence House.

The rendezvous occurred at a glitzy reception held to celebrate 30 years of the Forward Arts Foundation. The Foundation, on a mission to spread the love of poetry throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, decided to throw this soiree just as London was gearing up for another artistic extravaganza: Frieze Week. Clearly, this was a battle for the city's cultural heart, and poetry had the honour of setting the stage.

The highlight of the evening, however, was the majestic meeting of the minds between Bonham Carter and the Queen Consort. As they locked eyes, it was hard to tell who was more starstruck. The actress executed a curtsey so profound it nearly reached the Earth's core before engaging the Queen in delightful conversation.

In a refreshing break from her usual attire, which would make even the most extravagant peacock jealous, Bonham Carter sported a dress adorned with bright florals and black feathers, accented by pink ribbons in her hair. Camilla, on the other hand, stole the sartorial spotlight in an arresting peacock feather print shirt dress that must've made any nearby birds quite envious.

But Bonham Carter wasn't content with merely being a guest; she also graced the audience with her talents by reciting a poem. Her choice was William Stafford's "Yes," a poem that would have moved Shakespeare himself to stand up, clap and stomp his booted feet.

William Sieghart, the founder of the Forward Arts Foundation, expressed his immense pride in the work of the foundation and thanked the Queen for her involvement, calling it "proof of the pudding" that they were indeed making progress.

Among the distinguished guests at this intimate soirée were previous winners of the Forward Prizes for Poetry, including the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, the actress Karen Bryson, and Bonham Carter’s former The Crown co-star, Natascha McElhone.

Speaking of royalty, Netflix's juggernaut series, The Crown, has once again captured our attention. The recent announcement of the November and December release dates for the final season has ignited a whirlwind of excitement and speculation. The promotional artwork for this last hurrah features a moody and atmospheric image of the Queen, played by the talented Imelda Staunton, and a reimagining of the iconic photograph of Princess Diana poised on the diving board of a yacht in Portofino, just a week before her untimely departure from this world.

While fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming season, it hasn't been without its controversies. Critics have raised their eyebrows at reports suggesting that the show will include depictions of Princess Diana's "ghost".

Bonham Carter herself, who graciously passed her fictitious tiara to Leslie Manville for the final seasons, has spoken out about the show's duty to distinguish between fact and artistic license. During a chat on the show's official podcast back in 2020, she insisted that The Crown carries a "moral responsibility" to remind viewers that this is a work of fiction inspired by facts, not an educational documentary. It's a reminder to us all that even the fanciest of crowns can come with a little disclaimer.

So, as the final season of The Crown approaches, we can only wonder what other regal surprises are in store for us. In the meantime, let's raise a glass to the poetic evening at Clarence House, where fact met fiction, and where, for a brief moment, we were all kings and queens of our own whimsical kingdom.

Images: Getty

"Thoughtful and sensitive": The Crown's plan to recreate Diana's death

The Crown have announced that they will be covering the death of Princess Diana in the upcoming season of the show, saying they will be handling the recreation "carefully".

The Netflix drama based on the story of the royal family will be returning later this year for season six, which is expected to be the final season of the show.

The final season of The Crown is set to take place between the years of 1997 to the early 2000s, including a delicate recreation of the death of the late Princess of Wales.

Producer of the show Suzanne Mackie spoke of the upcoming season at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, saying it took a long and careful conversation to reach the decision to cover Diana's death on the show.

She said, "The show might be big and noisy, but we're not. We're thoughtful people and we're sensitive people."

"And so there was a very, very careful, long, long, long conversation about how we do it – and I hope, you know, the audience will judge it in the end, but I think it's been delicately, thoughtfully recreated."

Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki will be returning as Diana after her portrayal of the late Princess in season five.

Mackie said Debicki was an "extraordinary actress" who treated the subject carefully.

"She was so thoughtful, considerate and loved Diana," Mackie said.

"So there was a huge amount of respect from us all. I hope that's evident when you see it."

Season six of the show is also set to include the early days of Prince William and Kate Middleton's love story, beginning when they met while at St Andrew's University in Scotland in 2001.

Crown Princess shares adorable snaps of new baby

Malaysia's Crown Prince Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra and his wife Crown Princess Sofie Louise Johansson have shared a few adorable snaps of their newborn son.

The couple welcomed their first child, a healthy baby boy Johan, on July 17 at the University Science Malaysia Hospital.

Just two weeks after his birth, Princess Sofie took to Instagram to share a few snaps from her son's recent Aqiqah - an Islamic tradition performed after a child is born, where they sacrifice an animal and share the meat to the poor as a way of celebrating a new life and expressing their gratitude to Allah for blessing them with a child.

"Today we had the Aqiqah for baby Johan," she began the post.

"Normally the Aqiqah takes place on either the 7th day or the 14th day after birth."

The ceremony was held at the royal palace in Kelantan's capital Kota Bharu.

In the photos, baby Johan was pictured sleeping peacefully in a white cot, while in another photo he was resting on a padded stool in a bed surrounded by flowers.

In another photo, a family member is pictured giving baby Johan a taste of honey as part of the Aqiqah, as it is believed to reflect the sweetness of the Qur'an.

The baby's birth was announced just over a week ago in an official statement released by the Kelantan Sultan Office.

"Her Highness and the royal baby are both in good health," the statement read.

"HRH the Crown Prince and HH the Crown Princess would like to thank all the employees at [the hospital] who were involved and to all the Kelantanese who prayed for their well-being and the safe delivery of their child."

The Crown Prince and Princess wedded in a lavish ceremony attended by over 300 people in 2019.

They first met each other in England, when the Crown Prince was studying history at the London School of Economics and Political Science and University College London.

The Crown Princess was working as an au pair during that time.

Images: Instagram

It’s been an absolute joy to be a part of it,” Burton said after his win.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Dancing with the Stars Australia (@dancingau)

The colourful finale saw the six remaining couples each perform a freestyle routine in the hopes of winning the coveted trophy.

Weir and her dance partner Lyu Masuda performed an energetic routine to the Spice Girls hit track Spice Up Your Life, with judge Todd McKenney saying he “absolutely loved” the “fantastic” performance.

“You were shimmying for Jesus, darling,” fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood told her.

Meanwhile, Burton and dance partner Ash-Leigh Hunter danced to Wilson Pickett’s 1962 classic Land of a Thousand Dances, a performance Revel Horwood said was “full of rhythm and musicality.”

“It seems, Phil, that you can turn your hand to any genre of dance - and that proves it,” he said.

Both Burton and Weir scored the highest score from the judges for the night, tied at 39 points, putting them at an equal footing for the top two.

But in the end, Burton’s Human Nature fanbase helped him win the audience vote over Weir, becoming the newest champion of the show.

“Far out… I did it”: MasterChef winner crowned!

Brent Draper has been announced as MasterChef Australia’s winner!

Brent was a returning contestant who had previously withdrawn from the 2021 season of MasterChef, after revealing that he was struggling with his mental health.

For the first round the pair had to make “a dish that tells a story,” a challenge that was set by judge Melissa Leong.

Both contestants presented a dish with a pork base, with Brent opting for a pork chop with tamarind ketchup glaze, roast cabbage and salsa, which the judges deemed “perfectly executed”.

He scored a near perfect 29 out of 30.

Rhiannon went next whipping up a crispy pork belly dish with citrus caramel, fennel and orange salad and crispy shallots.

Although judge Andy Allen called it “the best-looking plate” she’d presented all season, she also received some criticism mainly that she was a bit stingy with the sauce.

She scored 25 out of 30.

The second and final round was more intense as the pair had to recreate a pocket watch dessert made up of layers of coffee, cream and cake.

Both contestants struggled with making the clear “glass” sugar dome that sits on top of the cake. While Rhiannon nailed it after two attempts, Brent couldn’t quite do the same after running out of time, so he had to present a final dish he thought he’d “stuffed up.”

Although his dish was less than perfect, Brent did a “very good job” at recreating the textures and flavours of the cake, which impressed pastry chef Amaury Guichon.

Rhiannon’s dish failed to impress the judges with Amaury saying that the “textures are all over the place,” which Mel Leong agreed was an issue as it meant “we lose the joy of the dish.”

In the end Brent scored 34 points in round two and Rhiannon scored 27.

Brent redeemed himself after withdrawing from season 13 of the show, with a final score of 63.

Rhiannon did her best and had a final score of 52 points.

The finale of this year’s MasterChef ended with an extended tribute to Jock Zonfrillo, which showed a highlight reel from his time as a judge and the message: “Give it up for Jock Zonfrillo.”

The season 15 MasterChef winner took to his Instagram to share his joy and tribute to Zonfrillo.

“Far out… I did it,” he captioned the post.

“This is a big win but it isn’t just for me. World’s Best Airline crowned for 2023

Air New Zealand has received the top honour from the AirlineRatings.com Airline Excellence Awards, taking home the coveted title of World’s Best Airline.

It’s the seventh time the airline has been commended since 2013, for the likes of its innovative and multi-award-winning SkyNest economy beds, its operational safety, environmental leadership, and staff motivation.

Competition was tough for the top five, with five editors looking at everything from major safety and government audits to 12 key factors including “fleet age, passenger reviews, profitability, investment rating, product offerings, and staff relations.”

And while Air NZ had taken out second place to two-time-consecutive champ Qatar Airways in 2022, the situation flipped in 2023, with the airline beating out Qatar, Etihad, Korean Airlines, and Singapore for the prestigious win.

As AirlineRatings’ Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said, “in our objective analysis Air New Zealand came out number one in many key areas although it was a very close scoring for the top five.

“Air New Zealand’s commitment to excellence in all facets of its business starts at the top with outstanding governance and one of the best executive teams in aviation through to a workforce that is delivering consistently to the airline’s strategy and customer promise.

“Like all airlines across the globe Air New Zealand has faced severe disruptions during and after the pandemic and this year huge challenges from storms and cyclones. The airline has responded well.

“Our editorial team was impressed by the airline’s commitment to the economy passenger and on long haul offers more comfort options than any other airline.”

In response to the win, Air NZ’s CEO Greg Foran shared that the airline owed its success to the 12,000 members of staff “who wake up each morning to connect Kiwis with each other and the world.”

He remarked that “it is a sign that we have got our swing back”, and like with many other airlines around the world, “we understand that our fantastic team faces difficulties in providing the service we strive for and that our customers expect. We’re working hard to address these challenges.

“There is no doubt that we have more work to do to tackle customer concerns like wait times, on-time departures and arrivals, lost baggage, and refunds. We want to thank our customers for their patience and support as we work towards delivering the greatest flying experience on Earth.”

Just missing out on the top five were Australia’s own Qantas and Virgin - coming in at sixth and seventh place respectively - although both airlines snagged number one positions in other categories.

Qantas took out Best Lounges with its network of over 51 lounges across Australia and the rest of the world. Meanwhile, Virgin Australia/VirginAtlantic took home the title of Best Cabin Crew - in what marked their fifth victory in the category.

And for anyone wondering how the rest of world’s top 25 premium airlines stacked up, here’s the complete list: Air New Zealand, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Virgin Australia/Virgin Atlantic, EVA Air, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa / Swiss, SAS, TAP Portugal, All Nippon Airways, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, British Airways, Jet Blue, JAL, Vietnam Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Hawaiian, KLM, Alaska Airlines, and United Airlines.

Images: Getty

Furious husband steals the show at a Brazilian beauty pageant

One beauty queen’s husband has caused a commotion at a pageant in Brazil, after the irate man stormed the stage to protest his wife coming second in the competition.

Audience members at the Miss Gay Mato Grasso 2023 pageant could not have predicted what was coming when Emannuelly Belini - the contestant representing the municipality of Várzea Grande - was announced winner, and Cuiabá’s Nathally Becker as runner-up.

The two embraced, with the crown on the way to Belini’s head, when Becker’s husband chose to storm the stage, bringing an end to the festivities when he snatched the sparkling headpiece only to smash it into the ground. according to local news outlet Globo.

Footage of the incident began to circulate online shortly after, and while Becker’s outraged husband has not yet been publicly identified, thousands are now equipped with the knowledge that second place sparks rage in the man.

He gave destroying the crown another go, and even tried to remove his wife from the stage, before the event’s security got involved and he was taken backstage.

The pageant’s coordinator, Malone Haenisch, later released a statement about what had transpired, trying to put reason to his actions, and stressing that the Miss Gay Mato Grosso judges had been fair in their decision to declare Belini as the winner.

“He did not consider the result to be fair and caused all this inconvenience and damage,” Haenisch said, according to the New York Post.

“We vehemently condemn the incident that occurred at the time of the crowning of the elected Miss when the partner of Miss Cuiabá, who was classified in second place, invaded the stage and aggressively destroyed the crown.”

“We confirm the pageant jury’s choice and we sympathise with the elected Miss, as well as [Becker], as she is not responsible for the crazy attitudes of third parties.”

Haenisch revealed that the pageant’s legal team had been informed of the events, and that any “necessary legal measures” would be taken, before circling back to the true star of the day - Bellini.

“The Miss Mato Grosso Gay pageant team congratulates Miss Várzea Grande, Emannuelly Belini, elected Miss Gay Mato Grosso 2023 on the night of 27 May,” Haenisch said.

“We reiterate our best wishes and wish you a glamorous reign, and that your activities may reflect the voice and desires of the LGBTQIAP+ community.”

Images: TMZ / Youtube
