“You must have been filthy”: Karl Stefanovic grills PM

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has refused to criticise Premier Daniel Andrews over the Victorian government’s handling of the coronavirus outbreaks.

Speaking to Karl Stefanovic on the Today show on Friday, Morrison said he would not comment on the state government’s management of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

“It is my job to support them, Karl,” Morrison said. “It’s time to help, not for me to run a commentary.”

Stefanovic replied: “You are a straight shooter. You must have been filthy.”

“It’s not about how I feel. It’s about what I do,” Morrison said.

Stefanovic insisted: “It does matter how you feel.”

“No, not for me. It doesn’t, mate. I’m sorry. Prime ministers don’t get that indulgence. We have a job to do and get on with it,” the PM said.

The statement came as an additional 1,000 Australian Defence Force personnel were deployed to assist Victoria with contact tracing, virus testing, police control points and quarantine compliance.

Morrison told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell the Commonwealth would not play a bigger role to take over from the Victorian government.

“It’s a Victorian problem and it requires a Victorian government to deal with it and we will give them every help and support we can for the decisions that they need to make and ultimately they will be accountable for that,” Morrison said.

“The ADF are very good at managing very significant logistical tasks and that is something that is becoming an even greater burden in Victoria as the scale of this is ramped up.”

Triple M radio star Gus Worland is celebrating 10 years on radio as he hosts Moonman in the Morning with Lawrence Mooney and Jess Eva.

After reflecting on his time in radio, he’s revealed which two celebrities were the most disappointing out of the hundreds that he’s interviewed.

Worland spoke to news.com.au to mark the milestone and reveal which celebrities are the best and worst ones to interview.

“The best, the number one standout, is Hulk Hogan,” he said. “He was actually meant to go to Kyle and Jackie O (who at the time were broadcasting on 2Day FM which is in the same building as Triple M) who were one level above us.

“But the security guy that let him into the building just assumed, ‘Oh, he must be here for Triple M.’

“Hulk Hogan wasn’t going to sit outside the studio and wait, he literally busted through the door when we were halfway through a break and all of a sudden Hulk Hogan was there,” Worland said. “That was a real highlight.”

Other celebrities that were a joy to interview include Rick Astley, Michael Buble and Michael Parkinson.

View this post on Instagram

#johnnybigg

A post shared by Gus Worland (@gusworland) on Jan 23, 2017 at 4:17pm PST

The worst celebrities include an Aussie motorcyclist and a Hollywood action star.

“The one we disliked the most was Steven Seagal who is the perfect actor for Triple M listeners but he’s always been very difficult,” Worland said.

“Every single time Seagal’s been on he just hasn’t wanted to play or even talk about the reason he’s actually on the show for. I’ve never watched a Seagal movie since. I just look at him now and think, ‘What’s wrong with you, brother?’

“Wayne Gardner (former 500cc Motorcycle World Champion) was a bit of a knob-end too,” the Triple M host said.

“He was in a filthy mood and we wanted to talk about a whole lot of things from motorcycling to V8s and he just didn’t want to play. He gave really short answers and there were no explanations when we asked for a story. We ended up not even airing it.

“When you meet someone that you’ve looked up to and they don’t play ball, it does leave a bit of a sour taste in your mouth,” he added.

Aussies' filthy oral hygiene habit – are you guilty of this?

New data has revealed that Australians are failing to listen to the advice of dentists and are struggling to maintain dental hygiene.

According to Australia’s Oral Health Tracker released earlier this week, more than 90 per cent of adults have experienced decay in their permanent teeth.

Surprisingly, only half of adults are brushing their teeth twice a day as recommended.

The Oral Health Tracker found that factors such as risky alcohol consumption and smoking are contributing to the poor oral health among adults.

The data also discovered alarming levels of tooth decay among children, with three out of four consuming too much sugar.

“The evidence shows that one-third of Australia’s five- to six-year-olds have had decay in their baby teeth. This is an unacceptably high rate and puts these children at risk of poor oral health in their development and adult years,” Dr Hugo Sachs, president of the Australian Dental Association, told news.com.au.

Australia’s Oral Health Tracker was created by dental academics/researchers, clinicians, policy and public health experts, and was released by the ADA.

The Tracker sets targets for improving the oral health of children and adults by 2025, to achieve the World Health Organisation’s targets for global prevention and reduction in chronic diseases.

Earlier this month, the Royal Children’s Hospital poll found that by early primary school one in four children need a tooth filling. One in 10 needed a tooth pulled out because of decay and one in 20 required a hospital visit to treat a decayed tooth.

Dr Sachs explained that poor oral health links to a range of diseases in adulthood, so it is important to ensure the young have good dental hygiene.

Sydney dentist Dr Steven Lin has also said that Australians need to focus on nutrition to look after their teeth.

Dr Lin told news.com.au that “most adults, and almost no kids, brush and floss properly”.

“While it’s a fine way to polish teeth, brushing is like taking a car with a broken engine to the car wash,” he said.

“It cleans but it doesn’t address the problem.”

Dr Lin highlighted that we need to maintain a diet that contains fats, vitamins D, A and K2 to maintain healthy mouths.

“Harmful foods that we eat are what fuels disease in the mouth. Vegetable oils and white flour are refined carbs, so anything with white flour has a very similar metabolic effect to sugar by creating cavities.

“Over time, we have stripped out foods that promote healthy teeth — like butter, meats, yolks and full-fat dairy. If you don’t include these types of fats in your diet, you lose the ability to absorb those vitamins.”

How do you take care of your teeth? Let us know in the comments below.

9 filthy things we’re all guilty of not cleaning correctly – and the effective and quick solutions

There are some items in the home that are a breeding ground for grime – and surprisingly most of us are not cleaning these things correctly. To keep these things clean isn’t that hard, it’s just knowing how to do it effectively – here we have some sneaky short cuts for you.

Mattress

When you think about the dead skin cells festering on your mattress, let alone the dust and mould – it’s enough to make your skin crawl. Turning your mattress a few times a year isn’t enough to keep it clean. Instead, strip the bed and sprinkle the mattress with bicarb soda. Allow that to sit for a couple of hours, then vacuum the mattress to remove it. It will look and smell much fresher.

Cutting board

It doesn’t take long for a wooden chopping board to be home to bits of food and odours (especially onion or garlic). Simply wiping it down won’t cut it. Instead, rinse under warm water and sprinkle liberally with bicarb soda. Then squeeze the juice of a lemon over the top and use the cut side of the lemon to scrub the board. Wipe it all down with a clean cloth and then apply some food-safe wood oil to seal it.

Baking trays and baking dishes

Regular washing up won’t remove baked on food from your trays. Instead, make a paste from bicarb soda and hydrogen peroxide. Rub the paste onto the tray, leave it overnight, and then rinse off the next day under some warm water.

Cheese grater

It’s hard to get rid of crusty bits of cheese from your grater without ruining your kitchen sponge. Instead, set aside a toothbrush in your cleaning arsenal for this very purpose.

Paintings

Keep your works of art free from dust and grime with this unusual tip. Remove the painting from the wall and dust with a soft brush. Pat the painting gently with some fluffy bread, brush again, and re-hang.

Blender

Instead of taking apart the blender after each use, try this. Rinse the jug, then add a cupful of hot water and a few drops of washing up liquid. Blend, rinse and allow to dry.

Coffee maker

If your coffee maker is slow or making a funky tasting brew, it’s time for a spring clean. Fill the water container with half water, half white vinegar. Run the machine through a cycle, and then run it again with just water.

Microwave

It doesn’t take long for bits of food and grime to build up on the inside of your microwave. Make it easier to remove by adding half a cup of white vinegar to a cup of water in a glass bowl or jug. Set to heat for five minutes and then wipe clean.

Toys

Once the grandkids have left, you can remove any germs from plastic toys by popping them on the top shelf of the dishwasher. The toys will come out super clean and sanitised.

Related links:

Do you know the correct way to clean your pillows?

4 ways to keep your house cleaner for longer

7 deadly sins that lead to hoarding
