Fireworks, motorbikes and opera: Carmen on Cockatoo Island review

Even if you haven’t seen Carmen, you’re sure to recognise its standout tunes that have cemented themselves into pop culture - and you won’t want to miss its current showing on Sydney’s Cockatoo Island.

A first for the historical island, Carmen has been transported both out of its traditional theatre environment and its 18th-century Spanish setting, being reimagined with a gritty, modern aesthetic that matches Cockatoo Island’s former ship-building warehouses and preserved industrial heritage.

While leaning on a ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ theme, the vibe from both the setting - think scaffolding and piles of barrels and destroyed cars - and costuming - think modern military gear, denim, fishnets, leopard print and elements of Y2K fashion - is more reminiscent of punk, dystopia, and Mad Max, with a trio of stunt motorbike riders and fireworks as icing on the cake.

Y2K, punk, and modern military styles collide in this adaptation of Carmen to create a dystopian feel that’s disconnected from a particular time or place. Image: Prudence Upton (Supplied)

Taking Carmen out of a Spanish cultural context gives the production a more timeless feel too, with additional imagery projected behind the cast during key scenes pushing the audience to interpret Carmen and Don José’s increasingly toxic relationship with a modern lens - particularly regarding themes of violence against women and coercive control.

In a time where these issues are being talked about more openly, this shift in perspective couldn’t be any more relevant, even if it does come across in a heavy-handed way in some moments.

In a world post-#MeToo and amid growing awareness of how issues such as coercive control victimise women, Opera Australia’s production draws attention to the negative elements of Carmen and Don José’s relationship. Image: Prudence Upton (Supplied)

While many aspects of how Carmen is presented have been changed for this adaptation, the music has stayed true to the original - with one difference coming from the nature of presenting an opera outdoors.

With the talented orchestra, led by conductor Tahu Matheson, located some distance away from the main stage in an adjacent building, the music is projected using speakers.

Despite the challenging situation, which saw the conductor and singers rely on screens to see each other, the performance is just as flawless as if the orchestra were in a pit beneath the stage of a concert hall.

When combined with the minimalist scenery and miked singers, it gives the production the sense of being less like an opera and more like a musical, with the grunge aesthetic making it seem particularly similar to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

But this didn’t take away from the performance, with the talents of Carmen Topicu and Roberto Aronica (who share the roles with Sian Sharp and Diego Torre) as Carmen and Don José and their captivating chemistry shining through.

Bullfighter Escamillo has been transformed into a leather-clad rockstar mobbed by an adoring crowd against a backdrop of wrecked cars. Image: Prudence Upton (Supplied)

The reimagining of the bullfighter Escamillo (played by Daniel Sumegi and Alexander Sefton) as a rockstar with elements of Elvis - including an iridescent black cape - is refreshing and helps to convey his celebrity status to a modern audience and the contrast between him and the more humble corporal Don José.

Micaёla also serves as a contrasting character, with her costuming of pastels and a more conservative, housewife-esque outfit highlighting her as the innocent village girl against Carmen’s bold and more revealing outfits, as well as her strength, independence and rebellious nature.

With a cast already considered large for an opera, Opera Australia’s production has seen this number grow even more as the roles of Carmen, Don José, Escamillo, Micaёla and Frasquita are shared, with singers performing on alternate nights.

Carmen’s costuming helps to convey the contrasting nature of its key characters, such as between childhood sweetheart Micaёla (right) and fiercely independent Carmen (left). Images: Prudence Upton (Supplied)

Other updates to the opera, such as motorbikes taking on the roles of bulls at the bullfight and the use of street dance choreography throughout, are employed to create the feeling of timelessness and modernity, along with the meta nature of the set design and story, including the use of a Carmen poster as a curtain for Carmen to walk through.

All in all, Carmen on Cockatoo Island is a refreshing take on a well-known opera that is sure to be enjoyed by regulars and first-timers alike, while its modern messaging will be sure to spark important conversations among those who see it.

Carmen on Cockatoo Island will be performing Tuesday through Sunday nights from November 25 until December 18, with tickets available here.

Image: Prudence Upton (Supplied)

"Beyond ridiculous": Kyrgios slammed for finals fireworks

Nick Kyrgios has come under fire for his behaviour during the nerve wrecking Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, which Aussie tennis great Rennae Stubbs described as “embarrassing”.

After winning the first set, Kyrgios was on the backfoot during the second and third, with Djokovic winning 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 and claiming the title for the seventh time.

😘🏆2️⃣1️⃣🙏🏼 #Wimbledon pic.twitter.com/Zo8PAScQzJ

— Novak Djokovic (@DjokerNole) July 10, 2022

As his odds of winning began to decline, Kyrgios directed his frustrations at the player box where his girlfriend, dad, sister and trainers were sitting.

When he dropped the serve for the first time during the second set of the fourth game, Kyrgios began questioning why he was having to ask his player box to support him.

“Say something,” he yelled in their direction later in the set. “You said nothing that whole point.

“Why do you stop? 40-0, 40-15 and you just relax! "Hypocritical": Locals baffled by Sydney Harbour fireworks display in the midst of catastrophic blaze conditions

Sydneysiders were left baffled by a 20 minute firework display in Sydney Harbour that took place in the midst of a total fire ban on Wednesday night.

As wild bushfires and incredible winds have ravaged throughout New South Wales and Queensland within the past week, it is estimated the damage will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to repair, according to AFR.

The dangerous conditions from strong winds and extreme temperatures on Tuesday prompted a fire danger rating for the greater Sydney region for the first time ever.

While total fire ban remained in place for all of New South Wales on Wednesday, there were still fireworks seen over the CBD at around 9.50pm.

The display went on for over 20 minutes, with many locals taking to Twitter to label the fireworks as “hypocritical” and “insensitive”.

“Seriously, total fire ban, nearly 10 pm in a school night and there are fireworks galore going off in Sydney. P**s poor effort,” one resident wrote.

“One of my students told me his house almost burnt down yesterday,” another said.

“Now there's fireworks exploding everywhere in Sydney. Seems a little insensitive, sending sparks everywhere at a time like this.”

“How are fireworks allowed in Sydney on a day of total fire ban? Seems somewhat hypocritical given the tough stance that has been taken against individuals,” another local posted.

Dozens of fires are still ablaze throughout the east of Australia.

Firefighters are beyond stretched to their limits attempting to contain several of the out of control blazes.

The largest active bushfire is the Liberation Trail bushfire just west of Coffs Harbour - covering more than 150,000 hectares with a circumference of 1,000 km.

The NSW Rural Fire Services issued a statement that as of 10 pm on Wednesday, there were 69 fires burning across the state.

14 of those are at Watch and Act alert.

“Over 1000 firefighters remain in the field to protect properties and establish containment lines ahead of worsening conditions later this week,” the statement read.

Sydney NYE Fireworks to honour Bowie, Prince and Wilder

Sydney’s fireworks are always one of the real highlights of the New Year’s festivities, and this year’s pyrotechnics will take on special significance with the City of Sydney confirming there will be tributes to David Bowie, Prince and Gene Wilder.

Barges on the harbour have reportedly been loaded with 120 tonnes of fireworks ahead of the incredible display, which will entertain visitors from all around the world.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore told Huffington Post, "This year sadly saw the loss of many music and entertainment legends around the world. Celebrating their music as part of the Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks displays is an opportunity to reflect on the year that's been and celebrate what the future holds.

"Sydney is especially significant for David Bowie, who called Elizabeth Bay home for a decade from the early eighties, filming music videos and recording an album here.

"Prince performed in Australia many times and his Sydney Opera House concert was one of his last. And I know children and adults everywhere will delight in the colourful Willy Wonka moment during the midnight fireworks."

Are you looking forward to the fireworks?

Related links:

What does 2017 hold for you?

5 best places to spend New Year’s Eve in Australia

David Bowie’s son welcomes baby boy

Sydney welcomes 5 P&O ships with fireworks

Two years of planning and thousands of hours of hard work culminated in a spectacular display in Sydney Harbour yesterday as the five-ship P&O fleet cruised through the Heads in V formation.

The Pacific Dawn, Pacific Pearl, Pacific Jewel and the liners’ two new additions, the Pacific Eden and the Pacific Aria, made their spectacular entrance carrying more than 9000 passenger and crew in what was the largest gathering of ships from one fleet in the Harbour since 1908.

Carnival Australia Events Director Greg Dehn said it had been an “enormous feat” to co-ordinate the historic gathering, “It is the first time the five ships have been together at any one time, anywhere, ever. One would usually be between here and the Pacific Islands, one perhaps in New Zealand and another cruising around Australia, and the other two are here for the first time.”

A logistic team had reportedly been working fulltime for three months to create the 55-page plan required to have the ships sailing so close together, and in perfect formation.

But you have to agree the effort was worth it. The pictures speak for themselves!

Caring for your pet during a fireworks display

It’s the season of celebrations and with it comes events like New Year’s Eve and Australia Day full of spectacular displays of fireworks. While it’s a sight to behold for us, for our furry friend it’s often a different case. The loud unfamiliar noises of fireworks can be a risk to frighten pets who might take flight in fear getting lost or even injuring themselves in the commotion. If you know there will be a night of explosions in your area, here’s what you can do to ease your pet through the noise.

Exercise – Take your pooch out for a long walk during the day of the fireworks and feed them well. A tired and well-fed dog will be less anxious at night.

Safe space – Keep your pet indoors and make sure all escape paths (doors, windows, pet doors and outsides gates) are secured. Pets can be very determined to escape when scared. Draw the curtains and distract your furry friend by turning on some music or the television.

Stay calm – During the fireworks don’t fuss over your pet excessively. Act normal and try and engage them in play. Reward them for calm behaviour. However, if your pooch is particularly distressed don’t ‘force’ anything.

Hideaway – Most pets have a special hideaway like under the bed or in the closet where they feel the safest. Cats in particular will often disappear to their safe spot and reappear once the noise has subsided. Let them hang out in their spot but make sure their safe.

No leads – Panicked dogs might choke themselves if tethered up.

Update ID – Make sure your pet’s ID and contact details are up-to-date in case the unthinkable does happen and your pet escapes from the house. Even if your house is secure, some dogs have been known to jump through glass windows or dig their way under fences that normally holds them.

Alternative arrangements – The best way to ensure your pet is ok is to stay with your pet. They generally feel more relaxed when their owner is around. However, that’s not always possible so consider making alternative arrangements like having someone come over or taking them to visit a friend or family member.

Talk to your vet – If your pet is particularly terrified of fireworks, ask your vet about any new treatment options or medication to manage noise phobias.

All Blacks fireworks display gone wrong costs pyrotechnics company $100K

A fireworks stunt that went "catastrophically" wrong at an All Blacks game has cost a pyrotechnics company $100,000. The display shot shrapnel at the 50,000-strong crowd as they gathered for the Bledisloe Cup test at Eden Park in August last year, injuring three spectators who suffered permanent scars.

It was "clearly good luck" that more people weren't injured, or even killed, Judge Grant Fraser told the Auckland District Court on Thursday morning as the responsible company, Waikato-based business Van Tiel Pyrotechnics, appeared for sentencing.

The business earlier pleaded guilty to seven charges laid by WorkSafe, a lead charge under the Health and Safety Act of failing to take all practicable steps to ensure no action or inaction of any employee harmed any person, and six under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, including failing to ensure hazardous substances were correctly identified.

The court heard the company, headed by director Martin Van Tiel, was contracted by the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) to create 12 fireballs around the field, with one directly behind the All Blacks due to light up as the team finished the haka.

The fireballs were created from a device that charged fuel in plastic mortars, igniting the firework upwards, Worksafe counsel Ian Brookie said.

On the day in question, the fuel the company usually used had run out and "significantly" another pyrotechnic fuel called 'the red star' was used, grabbed from a bucket with a handwritten label, he said.

The red star had a higher explosive classification but wasn't properly identified on the label.

Once compressed into the mortar, the mix became contaminated and instead of shooting upwards, it exploded inside the mortar, sending metal pieces, including a 30cm spike, flying into the crowd, according to the summary of facts.

"The stakes were high for the work the defendant was doing, a mistake by way of contamination could well, and did in this case, create a substance with a mass explosion hazard," Brookie said.

Three spectators were hit in the face, including rugby fan Cecilia Wang who required stitches to a 9cm gash on her forehead. Another passed out after being struck.

One of the victims had flown from Sydney specifically to see the game and said he was "shocked" with the consequences. All three victims had permanent scars and suffered ongoing emotional harm from what they described in victim impact statements as a "nightmare".

Brookie said Van Tiel fell "well short of the mark" when it came to fundamental tracking, identification and labelling procedures around explosives, but Van Tiel's lawyer, Neil Beadle, said in his client's 20 years of pyrotechnics business, the incident was a solitary and "unfortunate" one.

The company had been putting on fireworks for the NZRU for a decade, the fireworks substances were all stored correctly at their location and staff were trained to be skilled in their handling and identification, Beadle said.

Van Tiel had been a "responsible" defendant who had apologised personally to each of the victims. One had been given an undisclosed reparation package, and another was flown to Wellington to watch another match, Beadle said.

Considering the total fine and reparation the company should pay, Judge Fraser said, "Let's cut to the chase. This is a classic case of human error.”

For the health and safety offence he ordered a fine of $52,500 be paid, and for the hazardous substance act charges, a fine of $31,500. Reparations of $3000 each were to be paid to two of the victims, along with additional costs of $2282, said to cover the financial loss the victims had suffered.

Combined with a reparation already made to a third victim, the amount of which wasn't disclosed in court, Judge Fraser said the total to be paid was "in excess of $100,000".

Hero image credit: Twitter / All Blacks

Written by Kelly Dennett.
