Tina Turner fans in a frenzy over major announcement

The late Tina Turner will be honoured at the upcoming NRL grand finals, 30 years on from her own iconic performance at the sporting event.

Performers of the Tina Turner Musical will headline both the men's and women's grand final events, marking three decades since the late singer's iconic performance at the 1993 grand final.

"Thirty years on, Tina Turner's 1993 performance remains one of the great grand final moments," NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said.

"This collaboration is a perfect way for rugby league to pay tribute to Tina and everything she did for our game, and it will be a special moment for fans amongst the outstanding entertainment on offer on grand final day."

Tina Turner had a long history with the NRL, as she partnered with the New South Wales Rugby League to deliver a campaign to promote the sport, with her songs What You Get Is What You See and The Best being used in the promo shoot and becoming synonymous with the game.

"She was so wonderful with the players," former league boss John Quayle told Nine. "She made everyone relax. She loved it too when we took the jumpers off the players, she was on the beach in bare feet, in a gym with weights and medicine balls."

"She was just part of it. She didn't change. Every day it was a big hug on set. Talking to players as if they were entertainers. They all loved it."

"It was iconic. What a wonderful legacy. That final scene where she was up on the harbour bridge. She was up there before any tours with no safety gear, she just loved to do it and that's how good she was."

The NRL grand final will take place on Sunday October 1st at Sydney's Accor Stadium.

Tina Turner passed away in May 2023 at the age of 83 after a long battle with illness.

In a Barbie world … after the movie frenzy fades, how do we avoid tonnes of Barbie dolls going to landfill?

Alan Pears, RMIT University

It made headlines around the world when the much-hyped Barbie movie contributed to a world shortage of fluorescent pink paint.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When movies or TV shows become cultural phenomena, toymakers jump on board. And that comes with a surprisingly large amount of plastic waste. Think of the fad for Baby Yoda dolls after the first season of The Mandalorian in 2020. When the Barbie movie comes out this week, it’s bound to trigger a wave of doll purchases over and above the 60 million Barbies already sold annually.

Toys are the most plastic-intensive consumer goods in the world, according to a 2014 United Nations Environment Program report.

Worse, very few toys are recycled. That’s often because they can’t be – they’re made of a complex mixture of plastics, metals and electronics. When children get bored, these toys often end up in landfill.

The toll of the dolls

Consider a single Barbie doll. What did it cost to create?

Before the US-China trade war, half the world’s toys were manufactured in Dongguan, a city in China. That included one in three Barbie dolls.

American researchers last year quantified what each doll costs the climate. Every 182 gram doll caused about 660 grams of carbon emissions, including plastic production, manufacture and transport.

The researchers analysed seven other types of toys, including Lego sets and Jenga. By my calculations, emissions on average across all these types of toys are about 4.5 kilograms per kilogram of toys.

Scaled up, this is considerable. In the US, it’s estimated emissions from the plastics industry will overtake those from coal within seven years.

So the question is, how can we cut our emissions to zero as fast as possible to ensure we and our children have a liveable climate – without putting a blanket ban on plastic toys? After all, toys and entertainment add happiness to our lives.

The role for toymakers and governments

To date, there has been little focus on making the toy industry more sustainable. But it shouldn’t escape our notice.

Toy manufacturers can – and should – use low carbon materials and supply chains, and focus on making toys easily dissembled. Toys should be as light as possible, to minimise transport emissions. And battery-powered toys should be avoided wherever possible, as they can double a toy’s climate impact and turn a plastic waste problem into an electronic waste problem. To their credit, some toymakers have cut back on plastic in their packaging, given packaging immediately becomes waste.

In a welcome move, the maker of Barbie, Mattel, launched their own recycling scheme in 2021, allowing buyers to send back old toys to be turned into new ones. This scheme isn’t available in Australia, however.

Toymakers can help at the design stage by choosing the materials they use carefully. Governments can encourage this by penalising cheap, high-environmental-impact plastics. We can look to the European and American bans on BPA-containing plastics in infant milk bottles as an example of what’s possible. Governments can set up effective recovery and recycling systems able to handle toys.

Some plastic-dependent brands such as Lego are unilaterally moving away from petrochemical-based plastic in favour of sugarcane-based plastic. But it’s not a short-term project.

While Barbie dolls had an uptick in popularity during the pandemic years – and will no doubt have another surge alongside the movie – longer-term trends are dampening plastic toy impact. While movies in the 1980s were often “toyetic” – conceived with an eye to toy sales – the trend is on the wane.

Gaming, for instance, has moved to centre stage for many older children. While gaming produces e-waste streams, it is also a likely cause of the longer-term fall in popularity of plastic toys.

What should we do?

If you’re a parent or an indulgent grandparent, it’s hard to avoid buying toys entirely – especially if your child gets obsessed with Barbie dolls after seeing the movie. So what should you do?

For starters, we can avoid cheap and nasty toys which are likely to break very quickly. Instead, look for toys which will last – and which will lend themselves to longer-term creative play. Think of the enduring popularity of brick-based toys or magnetic tiles. Look for secondhand toys. And look for toys made of simpler materials able to be recycled at the end of their lives – or even for the Barbie dolls made out of ocean plastics. <!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. A big fat snub,” one potentially former fan added.

Many weren’t going to let them stop them, with no few commenters making the most of the situation and looking ahead to better times at the stadiums, simply declaring to their friends “I guess we’re all going to Aus in February then”.

Images: Getty

Monster queues for unlikely ALDI product

Man shot dead after "frenzied attack" in Melbourne

Victoria police have said officers shot dead a man after witnessing him carry out a “frenzied attack” that left an older woman in critical condition in the north-west Melbourne suburb of Gladstone Park.

Police were called to John Coutts Reserve in Gladstone Park at around 3:30 pm on Thursday after receiving a number of reports of a man assaulting a woman.

Six minutes after the first call, officers showed up at the scene and allegedly discovered a man, who is said to be in his 30s, “seriously assaulting an older female” in what assistant commissioner Luke Cornelius called a “frenzied attack”.

Cornelius continued to reveal that police fired shots within 30 seconds of arriving at the scene after the man ignored authorities’ repeated requests to stop assaulting the woman.

The woman is currently in critical condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She has not been identified due to the extent of her injuries, but according to Cornelius, police believe the man and woman were known to each other.

“It was not a random attack,” he said.

Cornelius said the man was known to police but had no criminal record, and that recent contact with him did not indicate “the events of today might have occurred”.

He said the officers who shot the man were “junior members early in their career”.

“They found themselves having to make one of the worst possible decisions that any member has to make in their career, so my heart goes out to them,” Cornelius said.

“We’re going to wrap our arms around those members and assure them of our support, assure them of our backing.

“They’ve done the best to stop a terrible attack from continuing, and tragically, despite their best efforts, it has resulted in the death of a male, who we believe was the assailant, and also very, very serious injuries to the female, who was the subject of that frenzied attack.”

The assistant commissioner said policing was a very tough profession that required members to make difficult decisions in high pressure scenarios.

“Our members are called upon to act decisively. Our members are called upon to take action. It’s apparent to me based on what I’ve been briefed about this afternoon that our members have done exactly what we expect of them.”

The police said homicide squad detectives would investigate the incident, overseen by professional standards command, according to protocols when weapons were discharged.

"Pure chaos" at Coles: Shoppers cause a frenzy over latest craze

Coles customers have come out in full force as they descended on shopfronts around the nation on Wednesday morning.

Wednesday marked the first day of the Coles Little Shop 2 promotion after a very successful debut last year.

A worker at Coles Wynard in Sydney's CBD shared with 7News.com.au about the “pure chaos” that started as soon as they opened their doors.

"We went through 10 cages (640 boxes) in less than half an hour," they shared, adding that workers had been overwhelmed at the response.

Customers justified the chaos through a simple message.

"They sold out too fast last year."

Others said that they weren’t into the hype but were getting them for others.

"I didn't do it last year, but people at work went nuts for them so I promised I'd get some for them," customer Tanya told 7News.com.au.

At the time of speaking, she had three cases, miniature shopping trolleys and a mini shopping basket in her arms.

Coles acknowledged the ruckus and said that the bosses didn’t expect the toys to sell so fast.

“We have lots of collector cases available and our team members are working hard to keep stock on the shelves,” the spokesman said.

“Some of our new items, including Coles trucks and registers, are selling more quickly than anticipated and we have extra stock on the way from our warehouses to stores.”

However, some were quick to call out the hypocrisy of the launch.

“The hypocrisy of Coles is outrageous,” Paul Hellier, who made a documentary about plastic waste, said to The Daily Mail.

“It started off Plastic Free July by boasting it had diverted 1.7 billion single-use plastic bags from landfill over the past 12 months, with its data claiming seven in 10 of its consumers now remember to bring a reusable bag when they shop.”

Hellier added, "This madness will only stop if we send Coles and the associated brands a message that will hurt them most – at the cash register. That's why we are calling for a boycott to all the items involved in the promotion.”

Coles said in a statement that the Little Shop collectables aren’t discarded quickly by customers.

“Rather than throwing them out, our customer research shows that of the customers who collected minis last year, 94 per cent have either kept them or given them to family or friends who were collecting,” a spokesperson from Coles said to The Daily Mail.

ALDI is bringing back a cult classic – and if you haven’t gotten your hands on it already, you may want to grab it before it sells out again.

The German supermarket is bringing back to the shelves its incredibly aesthetically pleasing $9.99 salt and pepper grinders.

The best thing about these handy kitchen gadgets is they are battery powered (with batteries included) and have a unique bottle shaped design, meaning your counters and dining tables won’t have salt or pepper dust and chunks everywhere.

What makes the grinders even better is the “crushing” mechanism used to sprinkle the salt and pepper evenly and lightly is automatically activated once the gadget is flipped upside down – meaning it's easier than what we may be used to.

The grinders come in a range of colours including black, white, light blue, navy, teal and plum, and may be the perfect addition to your kitchen.

The $9.99 salt and pepper combo are a dupe for the Menu $139 non-electric set.

The handy kitchen gadgets sold out instantly when they were initially released last year, leaving many ALDI fans disappointed.

This set is part of the ALDI Special Buys range set to be released on July 10 alongside the chic luxurious homewares sale that includes luxurious French linen from just $89.

Is Princess Eugenie pregnant? Royal fans in a frenzy after telling clue

While the royal family spent their Easter Sunday at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, one certain member was missing from the event.

Princess Eugenie opted out of the traditional proceedings with her family on Sunday, and instead attended a service with her grandmother, the Queen earlier in the week.

The royal member only recently tied the knot with her husband Jack Brooksbank in October 2018, and made a surprise guest appearance alongside her grandmother last Thursday as they stood handing out Maundy coins as a royal tradition.

However, royal fans caused a stir on social media by pointing out a few concerns with the Princess’ outfit choice.

Onlookers at St George’s Chapel, who watched on as the two royal members attended the proceeding, were quick to notice what looked to be a small “baby bump” beneath Eugenie's floral Erdem dress.

Those in attendance were not the only ones to notice something about Princess Eugenie’s special outfit, with fans also taking to social media with bated breath for the arrival of not just Baby Sussex, but another royal baby announcement as well.

“Can’t wait till we get a Royal Baby Brooksbank announcement. You're my favourite royal couple,” one supporter commented beneath the Princess’ latest Instagram post of her and her older sister, Princess Beatrice, from when they were kids.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Princess Eugenie (@princesseugenie) on Apr 25, 2019 at 12:31pm PDT

“I hope Princess Eugenie is expecting, your mother and father will be over the moon,” another wrote. “Announce it if you are!”

While an eager royal fan wrote: “Do you have to wait until Harry and Meghan have their baby before you can announce anything? We can’t wait.”

Bookmakers have placed 2-7 odds that the princess will announce she is expecting before the end of 2019.

“Babymania is taking over the Royal Family right now and Eugenie is the latest name expected to announce a pregnancy in the coming months,” Alex Apati from Ladbrokes said.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Princess Eugenie's "bump" that has royal watchers in a frenzy.
