Surprising move after top cop busted for speeding

Victoria Police found themselves facing embarrassment recently when one of their top-ranking officers, Glenn Weir, was caught speeding.

Weir, who serves as Victoria’s Road Policing Assistant Commissioner, was captured by a hidden speed camera in an undercover police car on February 29, traveling at 58km/h in a 50km/h zone.

What makes this incident particularly noteworthy is not just the fact that a high-ranking police officer was caught breaking the law, but also the response Weir himself has taken. Despite being eligible to have the charge downgraded to a warning due to his clean driving record, Weir has chosen to accept the consequences – a $337 fine and a single demerit point penalty.

In a statement addressing the incident, Weir expressed remorse and took full responsibility for his actions. He acknowledged the severity of the mistake, especially given his position as an advocate for road safety throughout his career.

"I take full responsibility for this error and am mortified it has occurred," Weir said. "I’ve spent my entire career advocating for road safety and this incident proves nobody is immune from making a mistake on the road."

Weir’s willingness to own up to his mistake sets an important example for accountability, not just within the police force but for all members of society. Moreover, his case underscores the importance of adhering to speed limits, with Victoria Police having long advocated for the correlation between speeding and road accidents. According to their data, speed is one of the leading causes of car crashes in the state, with the rise in the state’s road toll by almost 12% February 2023 to February 2024 further highlighting the urgency of addressing speeding and other reckless driving behaviours.

Weir’s decision to accept the consequences of his actions demonstrates integrity and a commitment to upholding the principles of road safety.

Image: 7 News

Shocking moment Glenn McGrath grabs three snakes with bare hands

Aussie Cricket legend Glenn McGrath has turned into a part time snake wrangler after having to remove three snakes from his rural Queensland property with his bare hands.

McGrath found the carpet pythons slithering inside his home on Wednesday, and decided to share the footage of him removing the unwelcome guests in different locations in his house.

One python was inside his pantry, another was in the living room and third was making its way across the hall.

"After plenty of encouragement and support from my wife, all three Coastal Carpet Pythons that were in the house were safely released back into the bush," he captioned the video.

In the video, his wife Sara screamed in absolute horror as he removed one of the snakes by grabbing its tail, carefully wrapping it around a mop, and taking it outside.

"You're going to get bitten," she screamed.

McGrath calmly reassured her that he had it all under control.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Glenn McGrath (@glennmcgrath11)

Fortunately, the carpet pythons are a non-venomous breed, so there was no real threat to McGrath.

However, many fans of the cricketer still applauded his bravery in the comments.

"Haha good technique mate. "We cannot judge": Nat Barr's frank question on war crimes for Army veteran

Sunrise host Natalie Barr surprised viewers when she confronted a war veteran after he referred senior Australian Defence Force leaders to the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes committed in Afghanistan.

Glenn Kolomeitz, a military lawyer and army veteran, signed the referral alongside Senator Jacqui Lambie.

The referral to The Hague had the criminal court examine the country’s high commanders “through the lens of command responsibility”.

Kolomeitz and Lambie claimed senior commanders have avoided investigation over alleged war crimes in Afghanistan.

“I've got to ask you. This is a question I get asked every time we discuss this general issue,” she said.

“We trained these people to kill, and we trained them to operate in a war setting. None of us as civilians have any idea what that's like and we cannot judge them for when they go over there to war. What do you say to that?”

Kolomeitz insisted that defence force personnel, regardless of rank, must be investigated if they’ve committed or covered up a criminal act.

“I worked with these guys on a couple of rotations, and quite frankly, they are amazing advocates for our country, but if they've done the wrong thing, they must be properly investigated, and they must be vigorously prosecuted. That's the reality,” he said.

“You can't ignore the commanders. You vigorously investigate and prosecute those who have done the wrong thing, including those with command responsibility.”

The TV presenter then asked if an investigation was necessary for the chief of the defence force, Angus Campbell.

Kolomeitz replied, “Every joint task force 633 commanders in that job during the period of the enquiry.”

The army veteran drafted the letter that would be sent to the International Criminal Court.

“If Australia does nothing about it, the ICC can potentially assume jurisdiction over the higher command and excise the higher command investigation from the ongoing investigation of junior soldiers,” he said.

The 2020 Brereton report found “credible” evidence that 25 current or former Australian SAS soldiers unlawfully killed 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners between 2005 and 2016.

The report strongly recommended administrative action be taken against ADF personnel where there is credible evidence of misconduct, but not enough for a criminal conviction.

It ruled that senior commanders were not criminally to blame for the alleged crimes.

Senator Lambie noted leadership had not been held to account for their actions.

“The government is no doubt hoping this will all just go away,” she told the Senate.

“They're hoping Australians will forget that when alleged war crimes in Afghanistan were investigated, our senior commanders got a free pass while our diggers were thrown under the bus.

"Well, we don't forget. I won't forget. Lest we forget.

“There is a culture of cover-up at the highest levels of the Australian Defence Force. It is the ultimate boys' club.”

Major star forced to skip Oscars after health diagnosis

Glenn Close has been forced to bow out of her appearance at the 95th Academy Awards after testing positive for Covid.

The 75-year-old acting legend was due to present an award at the show on Monday, but is remaining at home where she is "isolating and resting", according to reports by the Associated Press.

Close's publicist, Catherine Olim, confirmed that the actor contracted the virus and would no longer be able to attend the Oscars ceremony.

"She was very much looking forward to taking part in the show," Olim said in a statement, while she did not share details about the extent of Close's symptoms.

Producers are scrambling to find a replacement to present for actress, who has been nominated several times but never won, as she was reportedly meant to announce the winner of this year's Oscar for best picture award.

Sadly, Close’s appearance at the Oscars in the Los Angeles Dolby Theatre was meant to be a fun reunion between her and Harrison Ford, co-stars of the 1997 action picture Air Force One.

Glenn Close was among an impressive group of A-listers to present awards, including Riz Ahmed, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Troy Kotsur, Melissa McCarthy, Janelle Monáe and more.

This is not the first year that Covid has forced stars to pull out, as Lin Manuel-Miranda had to skip last year's show after his wife tested positive for the virus just before the award ceremony.

The virus has taken its toll on other awards shows, with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jamie Lee Curtis having to bow out of the Critics Choice awards in January following their participation in the Golden Globes the week before.

Tragedy as Aussie boy dies from mosquito bite

A nine-year-old boy from Western Australia has tragically died from dengue fever while on holiday with his family.

Glenn Pulgadas had been on holiday with his parents, Glenn and Ryza, in the Philippines to see extended family when he was bitten by a mosquito.

According to the ABC, the boy began feeling unwell on August 12th and was admitted to hospital.

He was described as being “weak in appearance” with headaches, fever, abdominal pain, vomiting and nose bleeds.

Glenn then went into dengue shock syndrome which typically includes clamminess, a rapid weak pulse and narrowing of pulse pressure.

These symptoms then led to organ failure, with Glenn tragically passing away on August 25th.

The young boy is being remembered as "bright and bubbly" by all who knew him.

“Glenn was a bright, bubbly, young boy who was so full of life and always had a smile on his face,” said family friend Danielle Zarzycki.

Glenn's hometown community of Harvey has launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses which has so far reached more than $9000.

One of the top donators, who gave $1,000 to Glenn's family, is local St Anne’s School, where Glenn was a year three student.

Dengue fever is spread via the bite of some species of mosquito.

Three out of four people who contract dengue won’t even get sick, and for those who do the symptoms can be mild and they often recover in a matter of days.

About one in 20 people who become sick with dengue will be hit by a severe form and in the worst cases, the disease can lead to shock, internal bleeding and death.

Glenn Close is opening up about her past.

As a respected actress in Hollywood, many know that the 74-year-old has been nominated for an Oscar eight times, but what is relatively unknown in comparison is her upbringing in a movement called Moral Re-Armament (MRA), which has been described as cult-like.

“It’s astounding that something you go through at such a young stage in your life still has such a potential to be destructive,” the star said during an interview on Prince Harry and Opray Winfrey's new Apple TV+ series The Me You Can't See.

“I think that’s childhood trauma, because of the devastation, emotional and psychological, of the cult,” she added.

“I am psychologically traumatised.”

Close said that her father William became involved in the movement when she was just a child and took their family to the MRA's Switzerland headquarters. The family lived their for two years while William worked as a doctor in Africa.

Ultimately, the family would be involved with the organisation for about 15 years.

“It was basically a cult. Everyone spouted the same things, and there’s a lot of rules, a lot of control,” recalled Close. ”Because of how we were raised, anything you thought you’d do for yourself was considered selfish. We never went on any vacations or had any collective memories of stuff other than what we went through, which was really awful.”

She said the way she was raised had lasting effects on her, and even played a role in her relationships. Close has been married and divorced three times, and also shares a daughter, Annie, with a previous long-time partner.

“I have not been successful in my relationships and finding a permanent partner, and I’m sorry about that,” she explained. “I think it’s our natural state to be connected like that. I don’t think you ever change your trigger points, but at least you can be aware of them, and at least you can maybe avoid situations that might make you vulnerable, especially in relationships.”

She joked: “It’s probably why we all have our dogs.”

At the age of 22, Close left the organisation and went to William & Mary College in Virginia to study drama.

Close mentioned that she ended up in therapy to help treat the issues brought on by her upbringing and also went on to reveal the mental health issues her family faced.

Her sister Jessie has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and her nephew suffers from schizophrenia.

“Jessie was always considered the wild one, the rebel, but when she came up to me one summer at my parents’ house in Wyoming, her kids were already in the car, and she came up to me and said, ‘I need help, I can’t stop thinking about killing myself,’ and for me it was a shock,” the star said.

“She ended up in hospital. I took her there. She was finally at age 50 properly diagnosed with bipolar one with psychotic tendencies.”

What these Sale of the Century hosts looks like now

It’s been almost 30 years since we last saw Tony Barber on our screens hosting the beloved TV game show Sale of the Century.

After he parted the show way back in 1991, two more hosts have since taken his place – although none have quite replicated his opening onto the show each night where he would run out replicating sporting moves.

Glenn Ridge took over hosting from Barber for 11 years.

After a few years of the show going into hibernation, Sale of the Century came to our TV screens once more in 2005 under the new name Temptation with Ed Philips.

Sale of the Century is celebrating its 40th anniversary since the show first began in 1979, and although there have been plenty of game shows to follow in the footsteps of the beloved show since its demise in 2005 – no other show has remained in the memory or the TV sets of Australians longer.

Tony turns 79 next month and is as energetic as he was almost 40 years ago. In fact, the TV show host is still up to his old tricks and asking questions. Once a month, he hosts a Sales night at the Flinders Café in South Melbourne, where he runs old reruns of the beloved show and helps raise money for the local Country Fire Service.

Did you used to watch Sale of the Century? Who was your favourite host? Tell us in the comments below.

The benefits of a lifestyle sea change

These benefits of living by the sea are the perfect excuse we have all been looking for to move by the ocean.

1. Better health

A study by the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Exeter in England found that those who live closer to the coast have better health than those who live inland. The idea of sea life having a positive impact on health is not a new notion, with doctors from the early 18th century prescribing patients trips to the shore or “bathing hospitals”, which were special clinics that offered seawater bath treatments. Swimming in salt water has been found to enhance the immune system, boost circulation and hydrate the skin.

2. Relaxed lifestyle

Scientist and author of Blue Mind, Dr Wallace J. Nichols, explains that the ocean has been proven to inspire creative thinking, reduce anxiety and promote compassion. Coastal paths also encourage outdoor activity. Not only will the fresh sea air revitalise your mind but it has also been proven to increase happiness.

3. Better sleep

The quality of coastal air varies greatly from air that is further inland. Air along the coast is charged with negative ions that allow your body to absorb oxygen more easily. The benefit of this air means that serotonin levels are more equalised, helping you to have a deeper sleep and allowing you to kick-start your days with a greater amount of energy.

4. Recreational activities

When you live by the coast, you can forget the hour-long drives to go fishing and visit beautiful scenery. Sailing and swimming are just two of the recreational activities that will be right outside your doorstep. A home by the sea also makes the perfect house for family to come and visit during the holidays. Your children who have left the nest will enjoy bringing their family to the coast to make special memories with their parents.

5. Meet new friends

When you live by the ocean, there is ample opportunity to meet people who have similar interests to you because you are not cooped up indoors. When you are near the ocean your day will consist of peaceful walks on the shore bumping into plenty of like-minded people along the way. Sunsets by the sea also offer the perfect view to take someone you are courting, or your significant other, for an inexpensive but unforgettable date.

6. Affordable

Although it is believed that a lifestyle sea change will cost you an arm and a leg, this is not the case. Hindmarsh Island, a hidden gem in South Australia, has land allotments selling from just $105,000 in Sturt Ridge, while river view plots are available from only $350,000. Sturt Ridge is just 90 minutes drive from Adelaide’s CBD and is opposite the historic river port of Goolwa.

Life on the coast can offer an amazing lifestyle change. When weighing the pros and cons of a coastal real estate purchase, be sure to consider these benefits.

To find out more about this unique opportunity for a sea change like no other, click here.

8 incredible actors who haven’t won an Oscar

The world was thrilled when Leonardo DiCaprio finally broke his Oscars drought and won the Best Actor gong at this year’s Academy Awards. However, it got us thinking – which other incredible actors have been overlooked by the Academy? We were shocked at what we found!

Glenn Close

We were surprised to discover 69-year-old Close never received an Oscar, especially given her illustrious career, which spans four decades. She has been nominated six times before, first in 1982 and most recently in 2011 for Albert Nobbs.

Johnny Depp

It’s hard to believe that one of the quirkiest actors around has never earned an Academy Award, despite receiving three nominations. In 2012 the 53-year-old held the Guinness World Record for the highest paid actor, but unfortunately money doesn’t equal acclaim!

Liam Neeson

One of our favourites, 64-year-old Liam Neeson received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in Spielberg’s Schindler’s List but lost out to Tom Hanks. The movie went on to win the Best Picture gong that year.

Bill Murray

Though he’s known for his comedic roles, Bill Murray, 65, has diversified quite a bit in recent years, starring in critically acclaimed dramas like Lost in Translation, for which he was nominated for Best Actor, but lost to Sean Penn.

Sigourney Weaver

The 66-year-old has been prolific in sci-fi icons like the Alien franchise, the first instalment of which earned her a Best Actress nomination. She was also nominated for Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl, but was unable to beat Jodie Foster and Geena Davis respectively.

Albert Finney

80-year-old Finney’s acting career began almost 60 years ago and he has been nominated for Best Actor an impressive four times (including for Murder on the Orient Express) and once for Best Supporting Actor but sadly has never won.

Harrison Ford

He’s played some of the most iconic roles in cinema, from Indiana Jones to Han Solo, but Ford, 73, has yet to win an Oscar. He was nominated for Best Actor back in 1985 for his role in Witness, but was beaten by William Hurt for Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Ralph Fiennes

The incredibly versatile 53-year-old actor has starred in many well-received films, including Schindler’s List and The English Patient, for which he received a Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor nomination respectively.

Which actors do you think should have received an Oscar for their performance?
