Heartache for Harry and William after the death of their uncle

Prince William and Prince Harry have been rocked by a devastating loss as their uncle has died.

Lord Robert Fellowes, the husband of William and Harry’s aunt Jane, passed away at the age of 82 from undisclosed causes.

Jane, an elder sister of the late Princess Diana, had been married to Robert for more than 40 years.

Prince William had an especially close relationship with Fellowes, as Lord Robert and Jane’s eldest daughter, Laura, is godmother to Princess Charlotte.

Lord Fellowes worked as private secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth during some of the most dramatic times during the 1990s, including when his sister-in-law Diana died in 1997 at the age of 36.

It has previously been reported that throughout Lord Robert's time as a palace courtier, he sometimes had a strained relationship with his sister-in-law.

However, when Diana died, he explained, “I was deeply fond of her. She was a very good person. She found it difficult in life to find happiness, and I’m sad for people who have that situation.”

Lord Fellowes was long a trusted member of a small group of advisors who guided the royal family during difficult times.

According to The New York Times, he helped to write the speech Elizabeth II gave to the nation from Buckingham Palace on the eve of Diana’s funeral.

Lord Robert Fellowes is survived by his wife Jane and their three children Laura, Alexander and Eleanor.

Fresh heartache for Queen after third death in a month

Image: Getty

The Queen is mourning the loss of a close friend, the third to die in the span of a month.

Racing journalist, trainer and author, Ivor Herbert, passed away aged 96 on January 5.

British media reports Herbert was a longtime friend of the monarch and was a regular visitor to the Queen's Balmoral estate in Scotland.

He also trained the winning horse of the 1957 Cheltenham Gold Cup and collaborated with Princess Anne on her 1991 book Riding Through My Life.

Herbert is the third close friend of the Queen to pass away in just over a month.

Only four days after Christmas, Her Majesty's Lady-in-Waiting Lady Diana Farnham died aged 90.

Lady Farnham served as the Queen's Lady of Bedchamber since 1987, and also attended events during the 2012 Diamond Jubilee service, when Prince Philip was unable to be there due to illness

"It is very sad for the Queen," a royal source told The Telegraph "Everyone loved Lady Farnham, she was always so good humoured.

"She was also a very glamorous and attractive woman. She was always very generous to new people joining the household.

"It has not been a good year for the Queen — losing her husband and then the Duchess of Grafton and now Lady Farnham.

"They were dear friends who supported the Queen on official duties."

On December 5, the Queen lost her close confidant the Dowager Duchess of Grafton. The duchess was the second Mistress of the Robes of the Queen's reign and the most senior of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting.

She and the Queen formed a close bond over the years and the duchess was by Her Majesty's side at countless official events and overseas royal tours.

The Duchess of Grafton was appointed the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order in 1980, an honour given by the monarch for services to the sovereign.

The Queen became godmother to the duchess' second daughter in 1954.

The loss of the Queen's close friends so closely together is surely another blow to what already has been a trying 12 months for the British royal family following the death of Prince Phillip, Prince Andrew's ongoing legal battles, Prince Harry and Meghan's verbal attacks against the family and her own health battles.

Cruise ship heartache: Little Chloe’s next step for justice

The parents of a child who plunged to her death after suffering a 46-metre fall from a cruise ship window are suing for millions as they release the chilling picture of where she died.

The toddler, Chloe Wiegand was in the hands of her grandad near to a window when she slipped.

However, her heart-stricken family insist the blame lies with the “negligent” cruise line, which they are reportedly launching legal action against.

The heartbreaking photograph taken of the tent covering the part of the deck that Alan and Kimberly Schultz’s baby girl died, was taken by a criminal investigator and is now being used in a negligence suit.

They are reportedly accusing Royal Caribbean of breaching safety protocols and standards.

The snap shows the view which Chloe’s grandad Salvatore “Sam” Anello had been balancing Chloe when he slipped and fell while the ship was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

It also shows a partial space between the wooden railing that Mr Anello held his granddaughter and a large, glass window that could be completely opened.

Mr Anello is facing up to six years behind bars after he was charged with criminal neglect – however Chloe’s parents are adamant the blame lies in the hands of the cruise ship.

Mr and Mrs Schultz are sticking by their daughter’s grandfather, insisting nothing is worse than “what has already happened”.

The family have reportedly filed a suit against Royal Caribbean to figure out why the 11th storey window was allegedly left open.

It is reported the family will receive “unlimited” damages for “pain and mental suffering” if their claim is successful, as Chloe died on American soil and not in the high seas.

The grieving family’s lawyer say it will be impossible to “put a figure” on their grief however, saying “four simple words – caution these windows open – and we wouldn’t be talking about his.

“A sticker, a decal with the Royal Caribbean logo, anything, and Chloe is still with us.”

The family will claim in court that little Chloe was being “closely supervised” by her granddad at the time of her death.

They will further maintain Mr Anello was “unaware” one of the large panes of glass surrounding the ship’s 11th floor had been slid open when he carried his granddaughter over to the railings.

The case alleges the window was the only one open “among dozens” and there was no clear indication that it had been opened.

The lawsuit also claims there was a 46 cm gap between the wooden railing and the open window, which made it even more difficult for a horrified Mr Anello to reach over and grasp for his toddler as she plunged to her death.

They also allege that Mr Anello being colourblind made hard for him to differentiate between the glass and the open window.

Chloe’s family have insisted the toddler liked to bang on glass, just as she did when at her brother’s hockey games – which is why her grandad had sat her on the wooden railing.

In November, it was reported there is video evidence that supports the grieving family’s claim that Mr Anello was unaware the window was open – a potential bombshell for both the case against her distraught grandad and the family’s Royal Caribbean suit.

Royal Caribbean has refused to comment further but described Chloe’s death as a “tragic incident”.

Royal heartache: Why the Queen felt “great sadness” over grandson Prince William

There is no doubt the Queen and her grandson - as well as heir to the throne - Prince William would share a particularly special bond.

The British monarch has been training the royal for his position to one day take the crown since he was just a teenager.

However, the two were not always so close.

Royal Biographer Ingrid Seward wrote about their complex relationship in her book My Husband and I: The Inside Story of 70 Years of the Royal Marriage.

The 37-year-old is next in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles and has been aware of his impending responsibilities since he was just 13-years-old.

It was around this time when the breakdown of Prince Charles’ and Princess Diana’s marriage began.

The couple would divorce in 1996 and not long after that, Princess Di’s explosive interview with BBC’s Panorama program which shared the inner details of the Royal family would air.

In this documentary, the mother-to-two would admit she struggled to fit into the famous family.

She was also asked if she thought Prince Charles would ever be kind to which she said:"I don't think any of us know the answer to that.

"And obviously it's a question that's in everybody's head. But who knows, who knows what fate will produce, who knows what circumstances will provoke?"

The royal went on to add: "There was always conflict on that subject with him when we discussed it, and I understood that conflict, because it's a very demanding role, being Prince of Wales, but it's an equally more demanding role being King.

"And being Prince of Wales produces more freedom now, and being King would be a little bit more suffocating.

"And because I know the character I would think that the top job, as I call it, would bring enormous limitations to him, and I don't know whether he could adapt to that."

Princess Diana was later asked if the title of King should go directly to their eldest son, Prince William.

"Well, then you have to see that William's very young at the moment, so do you want a burden like that to be put on his shoulders at such an age?” she said.

“...I can't answer that question."

Seward said the interview created fairs within the royal household that perhaps Princess Di was not giving her son the proper guidance and leadership to one day be King.

"The one person who could help, who had to help, was the Queen," she wrote in the book. "She knew only too well what pressures William was facing. She told her advisers she feared he might crack up like his mother had."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (@hermajestyqueenelizabethii_fan) on Aug 20, 2019 at 1:11am PDT

The Royal autobiographer said this is when the Queen began to have lunches with her grandson.

"They talked in a way they never could have done before. It can sometimes be awkward being there for people when they’ve been through something so traumatic.”

While she admitted that the loss “hurts”, she said she decided to turn her attention on those who stayed. “Anyone who has gone through a traumatic event, you need people around you,” said the 31-year-old.

“Then when those people aren’t there in your life, of course it hurts. But I just chose to focus on the awesome people I did have in my life.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Turia (@turiapitt) on Mar 30, 2019 at 4:25pm PDT

In her new book, Pitt shares a lot of wisdom on relationships, including tips on identifying toxic friendships. One of the things she encouraged her readers to do was to evaluate how they feel after hanging out with their social group.

“If you feel really bad and down about yourself, that’s not a friend you want,” said the mother-of-one. “If you feel good about yourself, you feel enough, funny and engaging, then you should spend more time with that person. That’s a lesson for adults as well.”

In 2011, Pitt was participating in an ultramarathon event in Western Australia’s Kimberley when she was trapped in a grassfire that left her with life-threatening burns.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Pitt said she has gained valuable insights on life since the fire that enabled her to write the book.

“My accident gave me a sense of perspective over things that are really important,” she said.

“I know life can be gritty and tough and hard but it’s also extraordinary and awesome and delightful and magical.

“I now know our relationships are the most important things we have and that you have to have a strong enough core to overcome challenges. If we don’t use our resilience muscle, we don’t get an understanding of how strong we actually are.”

Radio host Brendan 'Jonesy' Jones reveals his family’s cancer battle heartache

Radio host Brendan 'Jonesy' Jones has candidly opened up about the cancer heartache that has plagued his own family, following his appearance on Channel Seven’s The Real Full Monty on Sunday night.

The 50-year-old stripped down on stage with other Aussie stars to raise awareness for men’s health issues for the network’s one-off TV special.

In an interview with Yahoo Be, Jonesy said his father, Geoffrey, battled two different types of cancer and he hopes his story will encourage others to get checked regularly.

“He was just very unlucky to get two different cancers. Prostate cancer is one thing, lung cancer is a different kettle of fish. Had he not got the lung cancer, he'd be still with us now,” the WFSM host said.

“He had the prostate cancer and he got his checks regularly.

“He probably got onto it a bit too late though, as far as getting the tests done. So really you should be getting it when you're 40, so I started getting my tests done when I was 40.”

Sadly, Geoffrey passed away in September 2014.

In the interview, Brendan also revealed how nervous he was to strip for yesterday’s The Real Full Monty.

The radio star said he got a spray tan for the event and decided to stand next to Kenny actor Shane Jacobson, rather than Jett Kenny or Kris Smith.

AFL star Campbell Brown, actor Shane Jacobson, NRL great Matt Cooper, Sunrise’s Sam Mac, model Kris Smith, AFL commentator Brian ‘BT’ Taylor and Lisa Curry’s son, Jett Kenny, also took to the stage for the cause.

A post shared by Shane Jacobson (@theshanejacobson) on Jul 25, 2018 at 10:34pm PDT

Bert and Patti Newton’s new heartache over son Matthew

It should be the happiest time of the Newtons’ life – but the news that their eldest child Matthew Newton has become engaged has his family worried.

Last week, the troubled actor Matthew, 39, who moved to New York to pursue a fresh start, proposed to his 20-something American girlfriend, Catherine Schneiderman. She’s the daughter of Eric Schneiderman, the Attorney General of New York, and a man who has battled to impose harsher punishments for domestic violence.

Given Matthew’s history of domestic violence, where he was arrested for beating his then girlfriend Brooke Satchwell in 2006 and his then-fiancee Rachael Taylor in 2010, the family are worried.

“Patti and Bert knew absolutely nothing about his relationship – let alone the engagement – and are worried sick about the future,” a family friend told Women’s Day.

“Patti knows he’s not ‘fixed’, and there’s a chance this could all blow up in his face unless he has really changed and behaves himself."

"But she and Bert can’t ever be sure, given his unstable past.”

Related links:

TV auditions gone wrong

The Queen’s favourite TV shows revealed

2016 is the year of TV reboots and remakes

Poem captures the heartache of losing a loved one

Knowing the end is close for someone you love is one of the most difficult things you can ever deal with. All the preparations and time in the world are never enough to make you ready for the death of a loved one. This beautiful poem is sure to resonate with anyone who’s had to grapple with a tragic loss.

Enduring Guardianship

I was cool on the way to the lawyer, we’d talked it all through, no problem.

So why am I remembering the old kauri house where the wiring was dodgy

and I held my breath as she flicked the switch to turn off the power?

How can I do it without her, flick off the switch of life, decide on her fate

or my own, without consultation, alone? What if she goes and I’m inconsolable?

What if she stays and doesn’t know me?

I was cool on the way to the lawyer, we’d talked it all through, no problem.

So why am I seeing Durdle Door, that day when the sea scouts came upon us;

we were naked, swimming alone, so we thought. Why am I feeling the sting

of the storm on Mt Aspiring as she yanked me up the ravine? Why am I

watching the furious river trash those filthy trail bikes? We laughed

and cheered; we thought our laughter would never end.

I was cool on the way to the lawyer, we’d talked it all through, no problem.

So why am I hearing the birds in the flax at breakfast-time?

Who will speak to the sparrows for me, find out who’s courting who?

Who will converse with the cows, compliment them on their new calves?

Who will call to the hawk as he hovers in flight? Who will mopoke the owl

late at night? Not me, you see I’m part-city, she’s country to the core.

I was cool on the way to the lawyer, we’d talked it all through, no problem.

So why am I tasting the spray on our farm by the sea? Who will natter to the neighbours? Who will croon over crabs creeping sideways? Who will worship

the worms in the soil? Who will head off the terrier coming straight towards us?

Who will gentle the pony for me? Who will gentle my feral heart,

coax me out of my burrow, interpret nature, my nature for me?

I’m not cool on the way home from the lawyer, so we talk it all through, again.

Written by Sue Ogle.

This is an extract from Falling And Flying: Poems On Ageing, Edited by Judith Beveridge and Dr Susan Ogle, Brandl & Schlesinger.

All proceeds from book sales will go directly to the Penney Ageing Research Unit at the Royal North Shore Hospital.
