6 hair mistakes that make you look older

You may not know it, but your hairstyle might be making you look older than you feel. For hair that compliments you at any age read on and make sure you’re not guilty of committing these hair mistakes.

1. You’re afraid of bangs

Bangs, also known as a fringe, are an inherently youthful look. If you have relatively straight-wavy hair, they can take years off of your face. Try getting a full bang or a side-swept fringe for a youthful edge.

2. Your hair colour is too dark

Dark, monotone hair can draw attention to your facial features – in a bad way. If your hair colour is unflatteringly dark, it could just be drawing attention to your fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, if your hair is thinning, the contrasting shade will draw attention to your scalp, making it more obvious. Try breaking up your colour with face framing highlights or lightening your colour by a few shades.

3. You’re not taking advantage of your greys

If you’ve chosen to let your hair go grey naturally and aren’t doing anything to maintain the colour, this is going to age you. Grey hair turns yellow without proper maintenance. Embrace your greys by using a violet toning shampoo every other wash to help remove any yellow tones from your hair.

4. You’re afraid to trim

Unhealthy hair doesn’t look good on anyone, no matter what your age. If your hair is full of split ends, it will age you. Get routine maintenance trims every six to eight weeks to keep your hair looking and feeling young.

5. Your haircut is too trendy

If you opted for a very trendy, structured look in an attempt to look younger, it might have backfired. Having such a contrastingly youthful/modern haircut or colour might only draw attention to your age rather than mask it.

6. Your haircut is wrong

Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you have to cut your hair off. In fact, if your short haircut is too traditional and stuffy, it will only make you look older. On the other hand, keeping your hair long doesn’t necessarily make you look younger. Long, shapeless hair can weigh down your features and draw attention to lines. Pick the length you want, not the length you think you should have, and use soft/long or shaggy/short layers to keep you looking younger.
