This is how often you should be replacing your bed linen

The ultimate bed is one you want to dive right in to. Beautifully dressed, lofty and full, it is accessorised thoughtfully with perfectly plump pillows, a soft throw and plush duvet. But knowing when to replace certain key elements is essential.

Mattress

A quality mattress should be chosen according to your age and perhaps body type. “Look for a mattress that promotes perfect posture and comfort, while reducing pressure on your entire body,” says Timothy Dutt from Ultimate Beds. “It should be constructed of natural materials and not include metals, latex or synthetic fabrics.”

Contrary to popular belief, a premium mattress requires minimal maintenance, he says, and shouldn’t need to be flipped. “If it does, it is generally a sign that it will collapse, and the manufacturer is hoping to ensure it will collapse evenly,” says Dutt. “A quality mattress should also feature removable breathable covers and sit on a bed base with quality solid slats that provide adequate ventilation.”

Because our bodies change as we get older, consider the support your mattress provides.

“A general rule of thumb, is that a mattress should be changed every seven to 10 years. This is also for hygiene and health reasons,” says Dutt. “Look for signs it is failing, like lumps in the pillow top, dead spots in the springs, sleep impressions, waking up with aches and pains and not feeling rested.”

Pillows

When choosing your perfect pillow, being aware of your habitual sleep positions is imperative to make the right selection.

“You might be a back, tummy or side-sleeper, or a bit of everything,” says Lauren Roe, Creative Director at I Love Linen.

“Different pillow styles are designed to support your head and neck based on how your body will be positioned at night. For example, if you prefer side-sleeping or you are a larger frame, a high-loft pillow might work best for you.”

A pillow is only as comfortable as what is inside it. “Always ask about its inners,” she says. “If it’s microfibre, ensure it is soft, long-stapled and high quality, not cheap, rough polyfill. If the filling is natural fibres like feathers, ensure they are virgin. It means it is animal-friendly and a better quality filling.”

Daily plumping is also essential for keeping your pillows in tip-top condition.

“Every pillow has its own specific-care recommendations that should be closely followed,” she says. “Daily plumping is really effective for ensuring good air flow throughout and keeping fibres soft and supple.”

Every 12 months check your pillows for signs of wear and tear. “You are spending so much time in close contact with your pillow, that for your own comfort and health it pays to replace them. If they feel flat or lumpy or show signs of holding too much dust, there could be dust mites trapped inside.”

Bed linen

“You know you have high-quality bed linen, when it’s still the set you want to dress your bed in years after you purchased it,” says Alex McCabe, designer at Australian bed linen company Kip and Co.

“When purchasing, look for fabrics that will really last. That means that they need to be good quality and can mix and match well. Always select for the season. I love the warmth and comfort of jersey and velvet, but during the warmer months I gravitate towards 100 per cent cotton or French linen.”

This summer, beds are set to bloom with beautiful botanicals, she says. “Think timeless florals, creeping vines, stone and citrus-fruit pops,” says McCabe. “Our latest collection is called In Full Bloom. It’s inspired by colour-drenched Europe in the spring.”

For long-lasting, dreamy bed linen, be sure to launder mindfully. “Bed linen doesn’t have a use-by date,” she says, “but it will last a long time if you follow the care instructions.”

When the fabric begins to look worn out or threadbare, it’s time to be replaced. “For longevity, let each set of bed linen rest by rotating it regularly. Each season, add to your collection, but don’t throw out your old stuff. Changing it up means it lasts longer and is a great way to refresh the whole look and feel of your bedroom.”

Written by Elizabeth Clarke. ALDI shopper finds weird handwritten message on linen

An ALDI shopper has revealed the odd handwritten note on her son's bedspread that she picked up in a Special Buys sale.

She shared the find on a popular Facebook page and discovered the message in thick black texta on the fabric – a large note that appeared to read "LEMON FISH".

“Did anyone get the truck single bed spread?” said Hayley-Maree on the Aldi Mums Facebook page.

“I just washed it and was hanging it out and it looks like it’s been written on.

“It doesn’t have it anywhere else. Just wondering if anyone else got one and if it’s mark-free?”

Others quickly pointed out it's likely that the marks were made in the production phase of the bedspread.

“It’s been marked while being made by the looks of it,” said one.

“Measurements or maybe end of fabric roll - definitely take in for refund.”

Added another: “What you have is a doona that is made from the end of the roll of fabric and has been marked as such. Not ordinary ink, won’t come out.”

While it's currently unclear if the mum went into ALDI for a refund on the item, it would be great to know just what "LEMON FISH" could possibly be a reference to!

Best way to fold fitted sheet

If, like most of us, you tend to just ball up your fitted sheets and shove them in the linen cupboard, read on. There is a way to fold your fitted sheets so that they end up a neat and tidy rectangle, just like your flat sheets. Interested? Here’s how it’s done.

Step 1

Hold the fittest sheet over your hands, with the top corners inside out and have the elastic edge facing towards you.

Step 2

Fold the sheet in half vertically, placing the right corner over the left corner and create a pocket. Now flip the sheet upside down and create a second pocket at the top.

Step 3

Adjust the way you are holding the sheet so that you have two corners over your left hand and two over your right hand. The folded seam should be at the bottom with the tucked and gathered edge facing towards you.

Step 4

Now fold the sheet in half again, so that the four fitted corners meet. Place the right set of corners over the left set.

Step 5

Keep the gathered edges facing up, and fold the longer side of the curved edge into the middle a little bit, in order to create a straight edge. Your sheet should now be a rectangle. Fold in half first, and then fold into thirds. For best results, fold the fittest sheet straight out of the dryer while still warm.

Have you got any tips for solving some of life’s great mysteries like this one? The secret to keeping your whites white

From shirts to bedding, crisp whites always look great and add a touch of easy elegance. Here are the top secrets to keeping whites white. Preventing whites from eventually looking tired, yellow or grey seems near impossible. But as it turns out, there is a way to prevent the fade, and it’s not hard at all.

1. Wash immediately after use

Most whites can either take a few wears before they need washing/you’ll leave sheets and so on in the laundry basket for days before popping in the machine, but it’s best to keep white super clean. Tiny amounts of sweat, make-up or body oils can turn your whites yellow or grey in time. Wash immediately to decrease possible build up.

2. Stay on top of stains

Naturally, if you spill sauce or beetroot on your whites you need to attack it with stain remover. But other stains like deodorant marks build up more slowly. These should be treated early to avoid permanent damage. Just rub an undiluted liquid enzyme detergent onto the area, then leave for 15 minutes before washing as normal.

3. Wash whites with whites

Even if they’ve been washed loads of times, never wash coloured items with your whites. Small amounts of ink from the coloured items (especially items such as jeans) seep out into the water and make their way onto your good shirt.

4. Use laundry detergent containing bleach

These will help keep your whites even whiter during the wash cycle of the machine. You can also try a bluing agent which makes whites look blue-white rather than yellow-white.

5. Always measure the laundry powder

Using too much or not enough laundry detergent can cause your fabric to become grey and dull. It’s best to always follow the directions on your bottle, otherwise the stains can get trapped inside the clothing.

6. Do smaller loads of washing

Your clothes won’t get a proper chance to get clean if you throw too many items in each wash. Whilst it’s tempting to use all that space, it’s best to give the clothes some room to move.

7. Don’t over-dry your clothing

If you leave your washing out on the line for too long, it can make your whites look worn out sooner than it should. Instead, always check the label and dry according to the directions. You can also use the auto cycle on your clothes dryer so that it stops when it feels that the clothes are dry rather than just after a specific time.

Have you got any tip for keeping whites in good condition? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Related links:

8 tricks that will change the way you do laundry forever

How to make cloudy drinking glasses clear again

6 common mistakes you make when doing the laundry

Organisational perfection: five linen cupboard tips

Organising the linen cupboard can be frustrating at the best of times, and a nightmare at the worst. So we’ve got five simple things you can do to make your linen cupboard stay neat and presentable.

Roll your towels – This one is so easy to do, and it makes it so easy to grab a single towel when you need one. Even easier if you keep these often-used items front and centre.

Bundle your sheet sets – Another simple but effective hack. Place a spare set of sheets in a neat pile, and then tie them up with ribbon. You could also achieve the same effect by placing the whole set inside a pillowcase. No more hunting around for missing pieces – they’ll all be easy to see and completely grab-able.

Coordinate shelves – If you use your linen cupboard for more than just spare sheets and towels, you might want to think about keeping like items together. Have one shelf for spare cleaning supplies, another for spare sheets, etc. Remember to keep your most-used items where you can see and retrieve them easily. And anything heavy should live down the bottom.

Baskets for small items – It seems there are always bits and pieces floating around linen cupboards, and they never have a proper home. So why not pick up some small baskets or boxes and use them for those things you know you need, but not right now.

Label your shelves – Use some adhesive labels – or even just masking tape – to give everything a place to live. That way you won’t get confused about how you had it perfectly sorted before your guests arrived – you’ll be able to easily see where everything belongs.

Related Links:

13 nifty uses for magnets around the home.

5 ways to save space at your house.

How to use Pinterest to update your home.
