7 mantras to keep you mentally strong during tough times

Often it’s not until we are faced with adversity that we realise the power of our own mind to cope with it (or not). Losing someone close to you, financial hardship or health concerns are just a few of the problems that we may all face at some time in our lives.

The way you perceive the crisis internally is as important as ever. Having a positive frame of mind can help you to get through whatever curve balls life throws your way.

But how do you become one of those people who are mentally strong enough to face anything?

Try repeating these seven positive affirmations to yourself regularly. These can help strengthen your mind, giving you the ability to cope better than you may have thought you could.

I have everything I need to cope with this

Having the defeatist attitude of ‘this is impossible’ or ‘I can’t handle this’ will set you up to fail. But turning it around to a positive can really help. Think of what you do have, and the people in your life that will be there to support you along the way.

I need to be true to myself

Sometimes you’ll need to make hard decisions, such as moving house (or continents) or even deciding on care arrangements for an elderly parent. In those times there will be people who disagree with your decision, but always promise to yourself that you will stick to your guns in order to live according to your values.

We can learn from failure as we strive for greatness

Most people don’t have a simple life free of obstacles, and sometimes we do make the wrong decisions. But there’s no point dwelling on the past. Instead, see failure as a stepping-stone on your way to realising your true potential.

I will always give my best, and that’s enough

Nobody is perfect, so demanding perfection from yourself can cause you more stress and anxiety that you don’t need. Know that giving your all is good enough, and don’t give yourself a hard time if you don’t win at everything.

A few years down the track this won’t feel as important

It’s easy to get caught in a spiral of worry and self-pity, but the truth is that many of the decisions we make now won’t seem as important in five years time. Keep some perspective and this can help you to make the right call.

It’s OK to feel uncomfortable sometimes

So often we want to will the unpleasant emotions such as grief and sadness away immediately. But the truth is that you do have to go through the steps and deal with the feelings before you can move on. There is not always a quick fix. Know that they are feelings and they can’t hurt you.

I am strong enough to cope with this

Don’t let negative affirmations take over when problems arise. Repeating things like ‘this is too hard’ or ‘I will be alone forever’ can only make things worse. There is an inner strength that we all have that we can tap into when the going gets rough, so by repeating this you can flex that muscle that will help you to cope.

Have you got any tips for other Over60 readers for coping with tough times? How to create a personal mantra

Like many things in life, you have to work at being happy, however, that doesn’t mean that being happy is as hard as you might think. Although it might not always seem like it, we have control over how we react to the situations life throws at us. Still not convinced? Well let us let you in on a little secret… having your own personal mantra can take you one step closer to controlling your happiness.

It’s highly likely that everyone has heard of the idea of the power of positive thinking in relation to living a happy life. The great news is that living a happy life through happy thoughts isn’t as trivial as it sounds. Think back to times in your life when you’ve felt positive, ready to take on the world. Chances are at times like those, good things happened. Now compare that with moments that you’ve not felt so great, or not confident and you've told yourself so. Well, it’s almost guaranteed that with negative thoughts comes struggle and failure. We urge you to turn that pattern around today by coming up with your own personal mantra to keep you on the happy side of anything that life throws at you.

Related link: Tips for quieting an overactive mind

What is a mantra?

A sacred formula in Hinduism and Buddhism, a mantra is a thought – often repeated – that is designed to focus the mind. The use of mantras often occurs during meditation, and in more modern times, mantras have been used to help people retrain their thoughts to focus on positivity and success in order to reach their life goals.

How to create your own mantra?

Think of your own mantra as a personal tool to be used to find your happiness. Therefore, to come up with your personal mantra firstly you must understand what you are seeking in order for it to help you feel happy and complete. Take some time to think about things and recall what you've been telling yourself lately. If you notice your thoughts have been negative toward certain areas of your life, then now is the time to re-write your thoughts and turn them in a positive direction.

Examples:

I am a resilient, positive person who welcomes challenges and creates great outcomes.

I am a focused, successful yet compassionate person who has respect for myself and others.

I am a competent person who can face any challenge with fine ability.

I trust in my ability to navigate challenges with honour and clarity.

Through life’s challenges and experiences I find my true place in the world.

I am resilient, persistent, loving and loved.

I trust my heart and follow it always.

Top tip: The best mantras are personal ones that reflect you. Take some time when creating one for you.

How do you use a mantra?

Once you’ve come up with your mantra you are ready to start using it to better your own life. Get in the practice of saying it everyday whether that be by speaking out loud, or silently within your own thoughts. The most effective way for your mantra to become part of who you are and help you gain the results you’re looking for is by setting aside a little time each day to practice and absorb it. Good luck!

Related links:

Why laughter really is the best medicine

60 is my happy age because…

The happiness workout
