Man charged after allegedly killing neighbour in front of children

A man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a Melbourne mum to death in front of three young children. There was an apparent dispute between the two neighbours, and it has been reported that the 47-year-old man knocked on the home of a 51-year-old woman and attacked her multiple times with a knife. Emergency services were called to the home on Cousin Drive, Bayswater, in east Melbourne on Saturday morning, where the woman was found dead. Police said the woman's children, aged 16 and 11, and the alleged attacker's son, 17 witnessed the incident, with one of them sustaining a minor injury. "It's not a family violence incident, it is a tragic set of circumstances," Victoria Police detective senior sergeant Chris Ellway said on Saturday. "They're being looked after at the police station at the moment, statements are being taken and their welfare is being taken care of there," he added. The man was arrested a short time later and appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday while he was withdrawing from drugs and alcohol, the court heard. He has since been charged with one count of murder and remanded in custody and will appear at a committal on February 14. "Another woman lost at the hands of a man is just horrible," Ellway said. A former The Voice contestant has won the Melbourne Cup. Two years ago, Robbie Dolan, who was in Rita Ora's team, placed in the top 24 of The Voice Australia, and now he has celebrated an even bigger win after taking home the Melbourne Cup. Dolan, who was born in Ireland and is a keen jockey, first moved to Australia in 2016 when he was still figuring out his career path. “I came here eight years ago with an ambition of just having a crack,” the 28-year-old told the Today show on Wednesday morning. “Really just having a go, working hard and seeing what happens – and I’m sitting here with the Melbourne Cup.” While he had little luck on the reality TV show as he got eliminated in the sing-offs, his horse racing career has been more fruitful. Dolan started his career at the age of 17 in Ireland, where he participated in a nine-month training program and worked as an apprentice for about three seasons before trying his luck in Australia. Both his father and grandfather were successful riders in Ireland and it seems that racing is in his blood, after he and his five-year-old gelding Knight’s Choice pushed past Zardozi and nudged Warp Speed out of the winning spot 20m before the finish line. While he has celebrated the big win, the jockey remains humble as he revealed the key to winning the Cup was "a lot of luck". “You know, I just needed the runs to open in front of me, and thankfully they did," he said on the Today show. Plus, it helps when you've got a “good little horse” like Knight’s Choice. “He’s an underrated little horse and proved a lot of people wrong yesterday.” As for his singing career Dolan may need to give it a rest for the time being, saying: “My voice is half gone from last night." Boy's tragic death in school crash sparks incredible community response

The 11-year-old boy who tragically died after a car <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/health/caring/child-dies-after-car-crashes-through-school-gate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">crashed</a> through his school's gate has been identified, with a family friend sharing more details about the horrific accident. Jack Davey was sitting with friends when a car slammed through a fence and into a group of Year 5 students at Auburn South Primary School on Tuesday afternoon. He was critically injured and died on the way to hospital, while four other children were also injured. "Unfortunately a lot of the kids saw what happened," she said. "It's affected everybody. The school has offered councillors to us all, so there's been a lot of support. We're a close-knit community." Lucy recalled the moment she found out about the horror that unfolded at the school on Tuesday afternoon, saying she didn't realise the extent of what had happened at first. "I actually drove past the school after it happened and didn't think much of it," she admitted. "Then I started hearing about it." "I ran down to the school... you could see parents for at least 300, 400 metres and I saw everyone hugging. That's when I knew something happened at our school [and not one of the others close by]." Child dies after car crashes through school gate

One child has died and another four kids have been left injured after a car crash through a school gate in the east Melbourne suburb of Auburn. Emergency services were called to Auburn South Primary School in Hawthorn East on Tuesday afternoon after a car veered off the road and into the primary school's gate. The car collided with a table where five children were sitting. Two 11-year-old girls, one 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were all taken to hospital with serious injuries. An 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital with critical injuries, and later died. The driver of the vehicle was identified as a 40-year-old woman who was local to the area, and was arrested at the scene. A primary school-aged was also in the car at the time of the crash but remained unharmed. Victoria Police Inspector Craig McEvoy said the driver was attempting a U-turn before veering off the road, and it appeared the crash was an accident. "It's tragic circumstances ... really tough for everyone involved," McEvoy said. "It's always a tough time when children are involved." "The ongoing investigation will take days, weeks, months," Inspector McEvoy added. Premier Jacinta Allan also commented on the incident, saying it should have been an "unremarkable sunny day" at the school. "Instead, a dark shadow has been cast over our city and state," she wrote on X. "I'm sending my love and thoughts to the students, their families and the whole school communityAnd my thanks to the first responders on the scene," she said. A hilarious on-air moment has been captured by the Today Show, as a reporter was shoved by a winning race horse. Christine Ahern was reporting live from Flemington on Monday to celebrate the launch of the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival, as she got up close and personal with Twilight Payment, who won the Cup in 2020. Perhaps not used to all the attention - given the 2020 Cup had no trackside crowd due to the pandemic - as the horse made his TV debut on Today, things quickly went awry. "Can I say I'm normally quite nervous around horses, but Twilight Payment is absolutely beautiful and as you can see, quite a calm horse as well," Christine started as she cautiously petted the large animal. Uproar over council's bin "shaming" move

As councils around the country make big changes to the way we dispose of waste, one council's move has left an entire street in Melbourne "offended". On Wednesday morning, Essendon mum Kali took out her bins and thought nothing more of her weekly habit. It was when she came back after a coffee run that she spotted a tag that had "oh no" written in big red letters. "We found items that don't belong in your mixed recycling bin," the note read, identifying reusable shopping bags as the culprit. When she looked around all but one household on her street had the same yellow note. "I came back and saw all these tags on the bins, I thought 'That's a bit weird'," she told Yahoo News Australia. "It was the talk of the street," she said, after finding out that fellow residents were in "uproar" over the tags. Kali, a mum-of-two, has lived in her home for over nine years and said this was the first time she saw the tag on her bin. "It's just a bizarre thing to do," she said. "I thought it was funny that I got bin shamed. I'm sure we're all guilty of [recycling incorrectly], it's an easy mistake. "Our whole street was embarrassed about it," she added, saying "other neighbours were more offended". Kali is adamant that she didn't do anything wrong, as she ensures the bags in her bin were made out of paper, but said that "you don’t know who is putting things in your bin." A council spokesperson told Yahoo that the move was made to "inform" residents. "Council’s intention is to provide information to people at their homes through our kerbside bin education program to create more awareness, so everyone in the community can recycle right," the spokesperson said. "It's just not OK": Parking inspectors under fire for fining innocent drivers

Melbourne drivers are being hit with parking fines despite not doing anything wrong, raising questions about the legitimacy of the infringement notices. Emma Hodgkinson from Essendon told 9News that she was fined for supposedly overstaying in a two-hour parking zone. "I was furious, it's just not OK" she told the publication. Hodkinson had only left her house 40 minutes prior to the time stamp on the fine, and used CCTV footage from her home to prove it. "When I saw the timecode on the footage and I compared it to the time on the ticket I realised I hadn't done anything wrong and it was their mistake," she said. Many other drivers have had similar experiences, with one man from Richmond saying he received a $99 penalty earlier this month, despite having almost an hour left on his Pay Stay app. Another driver was fined by Stonnington Council who said he had parked for more than two hours even though he'd only been there for about 20 minutes. In most of these examples, many other cars in the same area had also been fined. "I was able to prove I was innocent but how are [the other drivers] going to be able to prove that?" Hodgkinson said. Council Watch representative Dean Hurlston said the reason why innocent drivers are being fined could be because council parking inspectors have to hit their quotas. "We know the job of a parking inspector is well paid for good reason," he told 9News. "They definitely have quotas. Councils need money, they're cash strapped. Distraught wife of cricket legend reveals cause of death

The grieving wife of late cricket legend Graham Thorpe has spoken out after her husband's untimely <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/health/caring/tragic-news-cricket-legend-dies-at-just-55" target="_blank" rel="noopener">death</a>, revealing that he tragically took his own life. After an illustrious cricket career in the UK, Thorpe died on August 5th at just 55 years old, leaving behind his wife and four children. Thorpe had previously been hospitalised in May 2022 following a suicide attempt, but made a full recovery. His wife Amanda has spoken out about her husband's mental illness, sharing how he had been suffering for many years. “Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better,” Amanda told The Times. “He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him.” She added: “We are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.” Amanda said Graham had suffered from major depression and anxiety “for a couple of years”, explaining, “Despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe." “We supported him as a family and he tried many, many treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work." “Graham was renowned as someone who was very mentally strong on the field and he was in good physical health. 100 cases confirmed in Melbourne's Legionnaires' outbreak

Authorities have confirmed that the number of confirmed cases of Legionnaires' in Melbourne has climbed to 100. Since the first confirmed case on July 26th, two elderly people have died from the illness, after the outbreak was tracked back to a cooling tower in Laverton North, in the city's west. The Department of Health currently investigating the outbreak, as another 10 suspected cases being closely monitored. Most of the cases are in adults aged over 40 and many have required hospitalisation, with a number of cases then requiring admission to intensive care after they developed severe community acquired pneumonia. Victoria’s chief health officer, Dr Clare Looker said authorities believe people were exposed to the virus between July 5th and July 20th, and presented with symptoms from the 15th. “Recent weather patterns could explain the wider than usual spread of legionella bacteria with this outbreak,” she said. Common symptoms of legionnaires’ include chills, cough, fever, headache and muscle aches and pains, while other atypical symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and confusion. “Tragic news”: Cricket legend dies at just 55

England cricket great Graham Thorpe has passed away aged just 55. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the news on Monday, with no immediate cause of death announced. He was regarded as one of the best batters of his generation, with a career that spanned 100 Test matches. “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away,” a statement from the ECB said. "There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham's deaths. "More than one of England's finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world. "His skill was unquestioned, and his abilities and achievements across a 13-year international career brought so much happiness to his teammates and England and Surrey CCC supporters alike. "Later, as a coach, he guided the best England men's talent to some incredible victories across all formats of the game. The cricket world is in mourning today. "Our hearts go out to his wife Amanda, his children, father Geoff, and all of his family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. "We will always remember Graham for his extraordinary contributions to the sport." Thorpe made his international debut in 1993 and scored a century on his first Ashes appearance, becoming the first England player to do so in 20 years. He played 82 one-day international games for England and amassed over 6700 runs in the Test arena, including 16 centuries. After retiring from playing duties in 2005, Thorpe transitioned into coaching and spent time as a batting coach for the national side between 2010 and 2022. He was set to take over the head coaching role with Afghanistan before falling ill. Tributes have poured in from Thorpe's fellow teammates and former coaches. “RIP Thorpey. Thanks for all the advice throughout my career, you were a great player and a brilliant teammate. You have gone far too young but you leave as an England cricket legend ... Thoughts with all who knew Thorpey and to all the family xxx,” Michael Vaughan, who captained Thorpe towards the end of his Test career, wrote on social media. Millions warned as dangerous disease spreads in Melbourne

Health authorities have issued an urgent warning to Victorians after multiple people have been admitted to hospital with severe symptoms. Victoria's Department of Health has revealed it is investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires disease after a "significant increase" in cases across Melbourne since Friday. Over just three days, 22 cases of the disease have been confirmed with another six cases suspected. Most of the cases are in adults aged over 40, with many of them requiring hospitalisation and intensive care for severe pneumonia. Health authorities are now searching for the source of the outbreak, as the health department said in a statement, "Legionnaires' disease can cause a chest infection with symptoms of fever, chills, cough, headache and muscle aches and pains. Other atypical symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and confusion." "All cases have visited or reside in metropolitan Melbourne. Those most at risk are adults aged over 40 years, especially people with other medical conditions or immune compromise, or who smoke." The source of the outbreak is not yet known but investigations are underway to determine where it has come from. Legionnaires' disease is spread by breathing in fine droplets of water that contain legionella bacteria, and is not commonly spread from person-to-person or by drinking contaminated water. The <a href="https://www.health.vic.gov.au/health-alerts/outbreak-of-legionnaires-disease-in-metropolitan-melbourne" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Health</a> is urging anyone who lives in, works in or has visited metropolitan Melbourne and surrounding areas to seek urgent medical care if they develop symptoms. School mourns after beloved teacher falls from roof

A beloved former teacher is being remembered as an educator who “loved a laugh and to have fun” after he suffered critical injuries following a fall. Paul Hogan, 61, was reportedly retrieving balls from the roof of St Margaret Mary’s School in Spotswood, Melbourne when he fell 3m to the concrete ground at around 2:30 pm on Thursday. He suffered critical head injuries and was taken to hospital, where he died on Friday. It is reported that students were still at school and parents were on campus for parent-teacher interviews, when the incident occurred. Hogan worked as a teacher and principal at several schools across the city, with an extensive 36-year career in education. “We extend our sincere condolences to Paul’s family, friends and colleagues, and we hold all of those impacted in our hearts and prayers," Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools executive director Dr Edward Simons said. “Paul was a friend and mentor to many in our MACS community and he will be dearly missed.” Hogan had his first classroom teaching role in 1988. He retired in 2022, but continued to work as a part-time and casual relief teacher at St Anne’s Sunbury, St Mary’s Ascot Vale, and St Margaret Mary’s Spotswood. Ascot Vale Panthers Junior Football Club said Hogan served as a “confidant, mentor and friend” to all who attended St Mary’s. “His infectious personality, energy and passion saw him loved by parents and students alike,” the club said. “Hoges was a tremendous supporter of the Ascot Vale Panthers Junior Football Club and the wider Ascot Vale community.” WorkSafe is investigating the incident. Four people found dead in Melbourne home

Four people have been found dead in a house in Melbourne's north after emergency services were called to a house in Broadmeadows around 2am on Tuesday. Two men, a woman, aged up to 40 years old, and a 17-year-old teenage boy were found dead inside the property. Speaking candidly on the Today show, Corey, who is the uncle of the teenager, said he went to visit the home in the early hours of Tuesday, and saw his nephew on the ground. Corey then explained how he smashed the windows to their unit to gain access, where he discovered the bodies. “I’ve come home to find family members in the house deceased and it just tortured me, shocked me,” said Corey. “It’s really, really got to me.” Speaking to Sunrise, he shared his love for his young nephew. “He’s my nephew. He looks up to his uncle. Me being there is ultimately the best thing, you know, I’ve come home to find him gone. He was a kid. 17 years old. I wouldn’t know what’s caused this,” he said. While Corey believes the family died of a drug overdose, police have not confirmed this and say they are still investigating. "What a joke": Backlash over new strict speed limit

Melbourne residents have lashed out at a local council over the controversial decision to reduce the speed limit on bust roads. Every street in Fitzroy and Collingwood, except state-managed roads such as major thoroughfares, are now under the new strict speed limit of a mere 30 kilometres an hour, which has been enforced by the Yarra City Council. Thoroughfares that are currently exempt from the 30km/h limit include Johnston Street, Nicholson Street, Hoddle Street, Alexandra Parade and Victoria Parade, although the council is working hard to bring the speed limits on these major roads down to 40km/h or 60km/h. Yarra City Council Mayor, Edward Crossland, said there is clear evidence that reducing speed limits will lessen the number of road accidents and save lives. “We want to make our streets safer and better places for people of all ages and abilities whether you are walking, wheeling, cycling or driving. 30km can have a huge benefit and we know there is a lot of support for this initiative across our community,” he said. “Research shows that a person walking is at least twice as likely to be killed by a driver travelling at 40km than at 30km and that safer speed limits in urban areas has minimal impact on travel time." The council first began trialling the 30km/h speed limit in 2018 in northern parts of Fitzroy and Collingwood, and brought the number of crashes down by 52 percent over the first 12 months. Despite the evidence that reduced speeds help the community at large, not everyone is impressed by the change, with social media users claiming the lower speed limit will “never be enforced”. Another claimed, “When the police commissioner comes out and says it’s ridiculous and nobody will follow the limits then yeah, fair to say it won’t be enforced.” In 2023, Victorian Police chief commissioner Shane Patton, told ABC radio that changing the speed limit to 30km/h was “not the answer”. “I think no one’s going to obey it. The daughter of late cricket legend Dean Jones has paid a special tribute to him on her wedding day. Phoebe Jones, one of the cricketer’s three children, tied the knot with partner Dario Gomez on the island paradise of Boracay in the Philippines last Wednesday. As a tribute to her late father, Phoebe had the number 324 embroidered at the end of her veil. Dean was a batter and the 324th person selected to play Test cricket for Australia. He was inducted to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2019. “Feeling all the love after the week of our dreams,” she captioned the photos posted to Instagram on Saturday. Michael Slater hit with 19 charges over alleged domestic violence

Michael Slater, a former Australian Test cricketer is being held in police custody after being charged with more than a dozen offences over alleged domestic violence. Slater, 54, had his case briefly heard in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday. It was reported by the ABC that he did not appear and no plea was entered. The charges include domestic violence offences of unlawful stalking or intimidation, breaking into a dwelling with intent at night, common assault, assault occasioning bodily harm and choking or suffocation. The 19 charges relate to offences allegedly committed on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast between December 5, 2023 and April 12 2024. Slater was also charged with breaching bail and and 10 counts of contravening a domestic violence order. He was then remanded in custody, with his case mentioned in the same court on Tuesday afternoon. During that second hearing, Slater collapsed in court after failing in his bid for freedom over an alleged domestic violence incident. Upon learning that his bid for bail had been refused, the former cricket great placed his head in his hands then collapsed while being led back to the cells by Corrective Services staff. Slater made his debut during the 1993 Ashes tour and played 74 tests for Australia. He amassed 5,312 runs and played 42 one-day internationals. Awful new details emerge after man's fatal fall from hot air balloon

Warning: Disturbing details New details have emerged of the moments before a man tragically fell to his death from a <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/man-dies-after-falling-from-hot-air-balloon-over-melbourne" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hot air balloon</a>. The man was one of ten people onboard the hot air balloon ride, which took off at around 7am on Monday. A video obtained by 7News, shows the man, dressed in a brown jumper, taking in the view over the city alongside other guests. Witnesses have also reported that the man looked fine and was even chatting with the ride operator about politics as the balloon launched into the air. As the ride reached around 450metres, just ten minutes later, with no warning whatsoever he shockingly exited the basket in what was reported to be an act of self-harm and plunged to his death. The pilot immediately made a distressed may day call as horrified passengers and motorists witnessed him fall through the air. Passengers onboard another hot air balloon, which was launched at the same time, recalled hearing the distress calls over the radio approximately 15 minutes into their ride. Not long after emergency services arrived at the horrifying scene in Albert Street, Preston in the city's north-east, where his body was found in a front yard. One witness recalled the incident and told the Today show: "My brother heard like a loud bang, almost like something like a large item falling in your house. And it wasn’t until we heard all the sirens that we came out." The incident, which occurred around 7:30 am on Albert Road, has left the neighbourhood in disbelief. Paramedics swiftly responded to the scene following distress calls, only to find the lifeless body of the man on the street. According to authorities, the victim was riding in the hot air balloon when the tragic accident unfolded. Aussie street crowned "world's coolest"

Global media company Time Out have released their official list of the world's coolest streets, with one busy street in Melbourne's inner north coming in first place. What makes a street cool? Well, according to the publication, each street's food offerings, drink options, cultural delights, nightlife and overall sense of community are the main factors that were taken into consideration when they made their list. To create the 2024 lineup, the publication had their global team of local expert editors and contributors each make a case for the coolest street in their city. Melbourne's High Street claimed the top spot local Time Out Melbourne editor Leah Glynn praising the road's "epic restaurants, hidden bars, live music venues and boutique shops". Glynn said that the street’s “bona fide cool status” comes down to one thing - “its unique, something-for-everyone local businesses”. The street itself is easily accessible from the CBD via the 86 tram line and criss-crosses the suburbs of Northcote, Thornbury and Preston. Hollywood Rd, one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong came in second. Pre-dating LA's famous entertainment district, the street itself is home to incredible restaurants including Michelin-starred Tate Dining Room. It's also home to the Man Mo Temple and the Mid-Levels Escalators, the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system. East Eleventh in Austin came in third, as it "encapsulates the city's spirit" for packing so many venues in a short quarter-mile. Derryn Hinch confirms next big career move

Former Senator for Victoria and radio personality Derryn Hinch has revealed that he will be running for Lord Mayor of Melbourne this year. A formal announcement will be made once he has found his deputy candidate. The 80 year-old shock jock told the Herald Sun that he wanted to “get the city back on its feet” and fix problems with the city’s “woke council”. He also told 3AW, the radio show he used to host, that he was planning to run with the slogan “Make Melbourne Magnificent”. “We used to be so proud of this place,” he said. “Let’s do some things that’ll make us proud again. “I’ve been getting hundreds of emails and Facebook posts with a lot of good ideas from people on what they’d like to see changed.” He added that he would reveal further details on his policies later, but has said that one of the things he'd like to change is the graffiti in the city, which he believes “needs to be totally wiped out” and "tough penalties" should be given when people are caught. "I have no illusions … that it’s gonna be hard work,” he said. “I’ll be doing my best to win”. He also said he wanted to investigate if property owned by the city council can be converted into further Melbourne housing. Hinch also said that he is looking for a female running mate who has state or council experience. The shock jock speculated that he would be running against Sally Capp, the current Lord Mayor of Melbourne, who has been in the role of Lord Mayor for two terms over six years, and may run again in October.
