"Patrons yelled to stop": Comedy Festival rocked by death on opening night

Melbourne’s comedy scene was rocked by tragedy on the opening night of this year’s International Comedy Festival, as an attendee suffered a fatal medical episode mid-show, leading to the abrupt cancellation of the event. The distressing incident occurred during comedian Michael Hing’s performance at the Palais Theatre, where a man on the upper level of the venue suffered a medical emergency. Attendees quickly responded, providing CPR in the dark while Hing remained unaware of the unfolding crisis. “[It] would have been at least 15 mins worth before the show stopping, and [it] only stopped as patrons yelled to stop performing,” one audience member told The Daily Mail. Another witness expressed dismay over the handling of the situation, stating, “I can’t believe they [the organisers] didn’t communicate with backstage to halt the show, and that it took the public to yell out to the comedian to stop for something to happen.” The Melbourne International Comedy Festival addressed the incident in a statement posted on Instagram, confirming the show’s cancellation. “Melbourne International Comedy Festival regrets to confirm that there was a medical emergency while the Opening Night Allstars Supershow was taking place this evening at the Palais Theatre,” a festival spokesman said. “The show was stopped and cancelled. The Festival will be in touch with all ticket holders tomorrow.” Victoria Police later confirmed the man’s death. “Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following the death of a man in St Kilda on Wednesday, 26 March,” a spokesman said. “Emergency services were called to a theatre on Lower Esplanade about 9pm. A man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.” Health worker Andrea Bortoli, who was sitting in the upper level’s front row, described the distressing scene as people began leaving and it “became quite obvious that someone was getting CPR. It was just obviously really distressing, so we wanted to leave,” she told The Age. Eventually, the theatre lights were turned on, and patrons were informed that the show had been cancelled. The Allstars Gala is one of the most anticipated nights of the festival, bringing together some of the biggest names in comedy. This year’s event was hosted by Hing. Princess Diana's former lover opens up in rare interview

Army Major James Hewitt, who had a five-year affair with the late Princess Diana from 1986, has spoken about the royal in a rare television interview with Good Morning Britain on Tuesday. When asked about whether he thinks Diana may have been able to reunite her sons, who have barely spoken in five years, he replied: "I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, as you put it." "And she'd do her best to try and get them together." Major Hewitt, who now spends his time doing aid work in Ukraine, revealed that the last time he had spoken to the late Princess was "just after" her BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir in November 1995, during which she admitted to their affair. He described the conversation as "distant" and admitted that the interview did "create problems" for him from which he was "trying to move on". After the affair was revealed, Major Hewitt was labelled as a "love rat" by the tabloid media and found his reputation in ruins. Pete Evans has opened up on the 'neo-Nazi' controversy that saw his books pulled from shelves and his career in the TV and culinary world stall. The former My Kitchen Rules host was dropped from the show in May 2020 over his outspoken and skeptical views on Covid and government restrictions to curb the spread of the pandemic, such as telling people not to wear masks and not to trust vaccines. In November the same year, Evans found himself embroiled in another controversy after posting a cartoon on Instagram featuring a Nazi “black sun” symbol. The image, showing a caterpillar wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat speaking to a butterfly with the black sun on its wing, was quickly deleted with Evans saying he was unaware of the symbol’s meaning. Responding to the backlash, major retailers including Woolworths, Kmart and Target remove his books, while other businesses including publisher Pan Macmillan and kitchenware brand Baccarat also cut ties with Evans. On the Secrets of the Underworld podcast, Evans spoke out about the tumultuous year, saying it was a "coordinated attack" from businesses to cut ties with him. “It was a coordinated attack, it wasn’t just f**king out of the blue,” Evans told podcast host Neil Cummins. “Within the space of 24 hours, the 15 business partners I was involved with all pretty much publicly denounced me. For that to happen it has to be a co-ordinated effort from some party. I don’t know who or what, but it wasn’t like, ‘Pete f**ked up’, it was like, ‘Pete f**ked up, let’s put the attack dogs onto this.’” Evans suggested the cancellation was intended “to dissuade anybody else that may want to stand up against the vaccine or this that and the other thing”. “This is what we can do to somebody, so be good boys and girls, just go along with the agenda, don’t stick your head up because we will financially destroy you,’” he said. Evans admitted that he did share the Nazi symbol but its true meaning was “unbeknownst to me”. “I just saw the Donald Trump hat and thought it was funny, I had no idea it was a f**king neo-Nazi sign,” he said. “It was like, ‘Got him! We’ve been waiting for this moment. Now we can bring out the whole neo-Nazi, white supremacist [thing]. We’ve got him now. We’re going to use this and pressure all his business partners, that you cannot be associated with this man anymore.’” Evans stressed that “just for the record, I’m not a neo-Nazi, never have been, never will be, I love all cultures, all cuisines, I respect everybody, every race”. “It’s so ridiculous people fell for that … that anybody could ever consider that I would be a neo-Nazi, it’s beyond ridiculous,” he said. "Dying does change how you live": Beloved Neighbours star opens up about cancer battle

Veteran Neighbours star Ian Smith, best known for his role as Harold Bishop on the popular long-running show, has shared insights into his ongoing battle with cancer, revealing that despite the challenges, he feels "good". He later made guest appearances in 2011, 2015, 2022, and most recently in 2024 before stepping away due to his illness. Upon Smith’s most recent departure, Neighbours Executive Producer Jason Herbison paid tribute to his contribution to the show. "The way the residents of Ramsay Street feel about Harold is how we all feel about Ian – we couldn't love him more than we do," Herbison told the Herald Sun. A spokesperson for Network 10 also expressed admiration for the actor, stating, "We are deeply saddened to hear of Ian Smith's cancer diagnosis. He is a cherished member of the Neighbours family." Bindi Irwin opens up about Steve's secret health battle

Bindi Irwin has opened up about her "whirlwind" life with her late father Steve Irwin before he tragically died. Speaking to Sarah Grynberg on the A Life of Greatness podcast, the wildlife warrior said her family's life was a "hurricane of adventure and wonder because of dad" before he passed away when she was juts eight years old. Bindi also candidly revealed that Steve suffered "terrible insomnia" which caused him to wake up in the dead of night. "He had terrible insomnia. I mean, he just never slept," she said. "He would wake up at 2am and by the time everyone else's workday has started, he'd put in a full day's work," she said. Steve Irwin's incredible work ethic was recently discovered in the Australia Zoo offices when staff were clearing out a cupboard before a renovation, which Bindi was quick to vouch for. "People may not realise that he had such a scientific mind," she said. "I was looking through his journals and he would just write down, I mean, thousands, it's not an exaggeration, but thousands of pages worth of information and facts and studies and findings." She said "by the time everyone else's workday has started, he'd put in a full day's work, and he would spend that time because the world is dark". "He would spend that time researching and studying. And that's where these journals came from." The wildlife warrior then opened up about her journey with grief, recalling when Steve passed away in 2006. "I remember when I was little and dad had just died, every adult that I saw would say to me: 'Time heals all wounds.' And I remember thinking, as an eight year old: 'What in the heck does that mean?' Why do people keep telling me like, one day I'll forget about this?" she said. "It actually made me a little bit scared," Bindi said, adding that she now knew "that information is wrong". "So firstly, don't say that to an eight-year-old. Time changes your grief. Time changes things and your perspective and everything," she continued. "But I know firsthand that the grief and the sadness and the feeling of loss from losing dad. That feeling is just a part of me. It's like a scar on your heart." Peter Overton opens up on health battle

Nine News star Peter Overton has opened up about the brutal health battle that's kept him away from the news desk over the past few weeks. The presenter had to undergo surgery on his vocal chords, after doctors found a polyp that urgently needed to be removed. “I took six weeks annual leave, and then my voice suddenly said, I’m on annual leave as well. I got very husky and raspy over the holidays, and went to the GP. He sent me to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeon, and suddenly the holiday turned into an operation in a Sydney hospital,” Overton said. “I had a polyp, quite a large polyp on one of my vocal cords. "They stick a camera up your nose and then down into your vocal cord, and then on a big screen, you see your vocal cords. And I saw this. It was like a big blister, a lump just hanging off the cord. “And I must admit, it scared the living daylights out of me." The polyp was removed three days later and he could return home after a day in recovery, but was unable to talk for a week. “It was interesting being mute. If I went to get the milk, I’d write an email to myself and it would say I’d have to show it to someone!” News of Overton’s health scare first emerged earlier this month, when his wife, Jess Rowe, revealed that he was on <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/jess-rowe-explains-peter-overton-s-absence-from-the-news-desk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">extended leave</a>. Overton shared that he's been working with a speech pathologist to get his voice back to what it was like before. "I've worked with a great speech pathologist who has got me back to the point I'm at," he said. "And three weeks since the operation, I'm doing the news again." "The human body is amazing. I've really learned that, and I've learned about the healing process, and I've learned about how intricate your vocal chords are and what they do," he added. "It's been fascinating." Jamie Oliver opens up on former feud with Gordon Ramsay

Jamie Oliver has opened up about his former feud with Gordon Ramsay on The Louis Theroux Podcast. The 49-year-old told Theroux that after years of exchanges with the Hell's Kitchen star, their wives Jools Oliver and Tana Ramsay were the ones who stepped in an encouraged them to patch things up. "I was a target [for] probably 10 years, I think, it was regular," Oliver said of Ramsay. "I generally used to bite [back] once a year, and then that used to set him off for another year ... I think it kind of generated the noise, it was serving its purpose for him - I mean, I'd have to ask Gordon what it was all about. "Cause we never fell out, we got on for the first couple of years, and then - as he did more TV - it just went on and on and on, and it was quite, it was painful but in the end it was Jools and his wife Tana that sorted it out." Oliver revealed that despite their former feud, his kids are friends with Ramsay's children. "It was like, 'come on dads, grow up' so I think that both of us got a telling off, and then we went to have a drink and put it all to rest and let bygones be bygones," he said. When Oliver's Italian chain went under, Ramsay was "very supportive" and "very kind", even sending him messages of encouragement. Oliver also opened up on his feud with Marco Pierre White, and said he was "destroyed" to hear his "hero" slam him in the press and didn't know what sparked it as they never worked together. "He doesn't like me at all, still doesn't," he said, but added "that's fine, I don't need anything from him". "I still think he was like a game changer, he was still my hero for that period of my life but that's life, and it's not just Marco, it's lots of people," Oliver said. American tennis star Ben Shelton has criticised the standard of on-court interviews at the Australian Open. The 22-year-old made it to the semi-finals with a 7-5 6-4 7-6 (7-4) victory against Sonego, in what will be his second Grand Slam semi-final appearance, taking on Jannik Sinner on Friday. As he was about to wrap up his post-match press conference, Shelton shared an unprompted take of the Australian Open TV broadcast. “One thing I just want to say, I’ve been a little bit shocked this week with how players have been treated by the broadcasters,” Shelton said. Novak Djokovic responds to Tony Jones' apology

Tony Jones has issued a full apology to Novak Djokovic, following the tennis star's decision to boycott his post-match interview with Channel Nine because of Jones' <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/novak-djokovic-refuses-post-match-interviews-after-offensive-comments" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"offensive comments"</a>. Jones broke his silence on Monday morning during an interview on Nine's Today show, saying that he had already apologised to members of Djokovic's support team behind the scenes - days before the walk-off. “If I could just give you a bit of a timeline here — the comments were made on the news on the Friday night, which I considered to be banter. I considered it to be humour. Which is consistent with most things I do, whether it be the Sunday Footy Show or on the morning show or here," he explained. “Having said that, I was made aware on Saturday morning from Tennis Australia via the Djokovic camp, that the Djokovic camp was not happy at all with those comments. “As such, I immediately contacted the Djokovic camp and issued an apology to them, so this is 48 hours ago. “But any disrespect that Novak felt that I caused and as I stand here now I stand by that apology to Novak if he felt any disrespect, which clearly he does.” He also apologised to the Serbian fans he heckled, saying that "what I thought I was doing was an extension of that banter", clarifying that he felt bad for letting down the Serbian fans. Jones' also explained that he "overstepped the mark" when he told the crowd of fans “Novak’s a has-been. Novak, kick him out." “I can stand here and put whatever spin I want on that, but it can only be interpreted as a throwback to the <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/news/news/novak-djokovic-told-to-leave-australia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Covid years</a> when he was kicked out," Jones said. “That has angered Novak, which I completely understand now. “It’s an unfortunate situation. Novak Djokovic stunned Australian Open viewers when he refused to conduct a post-match interview with Channel Nine - the official broadcaster for the tournament - on Sunday night. The Serbian superstar explained that the "offensive comments" made by Nine's sports presenter, Tony Jones, was the reason for his boycott. “I’d like to just clarify the reason why it was not conducted on the court,” Djokovic said. “A couple of days ago the famous sports journalist who works for official broadcaster here in Australia made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments towards me. And since then he chose not to issue any public apology, neither did Nine. “Since they’re official broadcasters I chose not to give interviews for Channel 9. I have nothing against Jim Courier or the Australian public. It’s unfortunate. “I chose to say something to the crowd but obviously wasn’t the time and situation to explain what I’m doing right now. “I leave it to Nine to handle this the way they see fit.” He also released a self-recorded video message to his fans apologising for not speaking to them on the court. “It was of course not a great feeling for me and it was quite awkward on the court. “Jim Courier was the one that came out. I have tremendous respect for him and I always love speaking to Jim and I know that a lot of people wanted to hear me speak so I apologise for everyone being in the stadium and not being able to hear me speak. And on the TV as well.” Djokovic also confirmed that he had spoken with Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley after the match and said he was prepared to be fined by the tournament for refusing to deal with the official broadcast partner. “I have really nice relationship with Craig, I think he’s a phenomenal guy that always tries to help players and understand the players’ needs or demands, so I just wanted to make sure that he knows where I stand and the reasons behind it,” the 10-time Aussie Open champion said. “So I told him, you know, If you guys want to fine me for not giving an on-court interview, that’s OK, I’ll accept that because I feel like this is something that needs to be done. “That’s all there is to it.” While Tony Jones is yet to speak through the Nine Network, he has reportedly made an apology through Serbian outlet Sport Klub. “Unfortunately, my ‘humour’ the other night was misinterpreted as an attack on Novak, he said. “That was certainly not the case. I’ve been joking with Serbian fans throughout the tournament and this is – at least I thought so – a continuation of that. “If you watch our morning show, you’ll get an idea of how we work. Bondi attack victim's father opens up about grief

Former North Melbourne AFL star Kerry Good has spoken publicly for the first time about the loss of his daughter in the Bondi Junction stabbing massacre. Ashlee Good was one of six people killed in the <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/family-of-bondi-killer-break-silence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">horrific rampage</a> at Westfield Bondi Junction in April last year. She was in the busy shopping centre with her then nine-month-old daughter, Harriet, and was fatally wounded while attempting to protect her baby from Joel Cauchi's attack. The 38-year-old mum managed to hand off Harriet to nearby strangers, an act that saved her injured daughter's life. While Harriet suffered stab wounds and was taken to Sydney Children's Hospital in critical condition, she was eventually able to return home. Ms Good's father opened up about the tragedy in an interview on Saturday. “Last year was very tough,” he said, in his first interview since his daughter's murder. “I just couldn’t wait for the year to end. I couldn’t wait to get rid of it.” The former footy star, who also owns racehorses, had a moment of cheer over the weekend after a year of hardship when his horses, Thedoctoroflove and Taramansour, won at Melbourne’s famous Flemington racecourse. “I actually wore the same suit as I wore to my daughter’s funeral today and it might have helped,” he told Racenet. “It’s a very special day.” Following the attack, a <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/outpouring-of-support-for-baby-girl-after-bondi-tragedy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe</a> was started for baby Harriet and her father, Dan Flanagan, which raised nearly $850,000. Nick Kyrgios makes retirement announcement after Aus Open comeback

Nick Kyrgios has made a candid admission about his participation in future Australian Opens as his comeback ended in tears. The 29-year-old returned to Melbourne after two years from the AO away to nurse an injury, although his return ended in disappointment in a straight-sets loss to Brit Jacob Fearnley. Many spectators were quick to point out that Kyrgios didn't seem like himself as his injury was affecting his serve and his endurance on the court. After looking down and out, he fought to the very end before crashing to the 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) loss. Speaking after the match, Kyrgios said he was “heartbroken” at being unable to perform at his show-stopping best, but added that he only played on for the packed John Cain Arena crowd cheering him on. “Realistically I can’t see myself playing singles again here,” he said. “It was special (atmosphere), taking that in, it was pretty good. I knew that I have doubles so I kind of was taking everything in tonight, in those moments, it was nuts." “I didn’t want to just throw in the towel and walk off or retire. I was hurting physically but I respect my opponent and the fans that waited hours to come see me play.” He later added: “Honestly, the reason I kept playing, tried to play tonight, was because of the fans. As I said, I don’t know how many times I’m going to be back here again." “That’s why I didn’t have headphones on, I wasn’t listening to music. I walked out there today, wanted to hear the crowd. There were some special moments.” Kyrgios still plans to team up with Thanasi Kokkinakis in the doubles and will continue to play out the season in singles. “It’s hard. When you’re competing for the biggest tournaments in the world and you’re struggling to win sets physically, it’s pretty tough,” he continued. “But I’ve still got a long year ahead. I’m trusting the process that I can still be able to do some cool things this year at some stage.” Despite the immediate devastation, Kyrgios was targeting a deep run at Wimbledon. “Obviously Wimbledon is a big one for me. "I miss her daily": Fergie opens up on friendship with Diana

As the Duchess of York wraps up her visit Down Under, she has shared some of her most cherished memories in an interview with 9Honey. Following a busy schedule of meet and greets as part of her book tour, Sarah Ferguson opened up on her friendship with the late Princess Diana, who, like the duchess, is a beloved member of the royal family. "The thing about Diana was that she had the best sense of humour of any single person I know – that's quite a big thing, so it's a really big hole because she'd get my sense of humour," the duchess told the publication. "It's really, really hard to really make me cackle with laughter like she used to. "And so, yes, I miss her daily, and I think in the '80s it was just her and I, wasn't it?" The two women were brought together by their marriages to then Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, and the royal affectionately recalled their strong bond. "There isn't anybody else to know, really, what we know because there was no social media and it was just newspaper headlines. "I was so proud of her, what she achieved, and she would be SO proud of her grandchildren. "Oh, my goodness. Can you imagine? She would be just loving every moment. "She was a great lady, and she still is a great lady." The duchess was originally scheduled to visit Australia in October, after she was invited by her Western Australia-based publisher, Serenity Press to showcase her commitment to literature, wellness and empowerment. However, she postponed her visit to not overshadow the King and Queen's tour. Jelena Dokic has shared that she would endure "100 years of abuse" to go back in time and represent Australia at the 2001 Australian Open. During an emotional interview with Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little, the tennis champion recalled the earlier years of her career, and the abuse she faced at the hands of her father, who was also her coach. At 17 years old, Jelena was booed off Rod Laver Arena at the 2001 Australian Open after losing to Lindsay Davenport, after she announced plans to turn her back on Australia and represent her native Yugoslavia instead. Jill, who has been notoriously private throughout her marriage to the Aussie music legend, has penned two chapters in Farnham's memoir The Voice Inside, sharing how John's cancer diagnosis changed everything, and shared her opinions on his future singing. “I don’t know if John will sing again,” she wrote. “It just depends. Because of the radiation, that whole side of his face is rock hard. The flesh, the muscle, the tendons, none of it is supple." “The surgeons need to work out how to loosen it all, so we have to be patient. He’s disappointed, naturally, because he may not be up on a stage again and he loved that.” Jill also revealed it was her who pushed Farnham to see a doctor before his diagnosis with cancer in August 2022, explaining, “He had a big white mass on the inside of his cheek and you could physically see it.” “For several months I was saying to him, ‘Let’s go see about that thing in your mouth,’ and he’d say, ‘No, it’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright.’ He kept putting it off and putting it off. I pleaded with him to go see a doctor and finally he did.” Jill explained how her husband's attitude as "a classic Cancerian” impacted the time it took to get a diagnosis, and how she has had to be strong for her whole family through the scary health ordeal. “Over the years I’ve had to be strong,” Jill wrote. “I’ve had to be a wife, a mother, a psychiatrist, a doctor, I’ve had to be all those things in one. I’ve had to be strong and bossy to keep the family together, to keep moving forward, and I have done that because I love John and I love my family." “John is a classic Cancerian, he likes to walk sideways and go around everything, rather than face any issues head-on,” Jill continued. “To this day he acts like that when he’s faced with a tough decision or situation. He always beats around the bush rather than deal with it and then, of course, that just makes a situation worse for him.” Later in the chapter detailing Farnham’s health, Jill set the record straight on some media reports relating to the surgery to remove the cancerous tumour. “And, just for the record, they didn’t take his jaw,” she wrote. “I know lots of people think that’s what happened, but in the end they removed the cancer from his cheek and they also scraped his jaw to make sure it hadn’t gotten into his bones." “Thankfully the cancer wasn’t in his bones, which was great news, and so he’s still got his bottom jaw, even though the radiation has messed that up a little bit." “In hospital they were feeding him through a tube in his stomach, which was pretty grim. I started taking in my home cooking. Things I knew John would like. He would eat a couple of mouthfuls and that would be it, he wouldn’t be able to manage any more. For a while there, it felt like one thing on top of another for John." “It was a traumatic time for all of us, but we got through it. Now he’s back to eating, which is a good sign, but he can’t open his mouth very far, so it’s hard.” Image credits: Nine

John Farnham is back in the spotlight following the release of his brand new memoir, John Farnham: The Voice Inside. The memoir explores the legendary singer's extraordinary almost six-decade career, with an insight into the star's notoriously private family life. As he slowly and steadily recovers from mouth cancer, the beloved singer's voice has been heard for the first time as he narrates the <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/health/caring/john-farnham-s-voice-heard-for-the-first-time-since-throat-surgery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">audiobook</a> for his memoir. Now, long-time friend Gaynor Wheatley has shared an exciting update on whether the music icon would ever perform again. "As soon as I saw him in the studio doing the audiobook and as soon as he got behind the microphone, the twinkle was in the eye," she told Today. "That's when I thought, you know, we're still in with a shot and he can still sing, his voice box is still great, there's just a few more things to do with the mouth recovery, but we all know he's as strong as a boxer so if he wants to do something, he'll do it. "If I say to him, 'You won't sing, you can't sing, what a shame', then he'll go, 'Yes I can, I'll prove you wrong'." In another interview with The Project, she recalled how the legendary singer still wants to perform despite his facial disfigurement from the surgery. “He’s a singer,” she said at the time. “I know when he got back in the studio doing the audiobook, he was like, ‘I want to get back, I want to go back’."
