"The heartbeat of Blondie": Legendary rocker passes away

<p>Clem Burke, the powerhouse drummer who kept the beat for Blondie across decades of chart-topping success, has died at the age of 70 following a private battle with cancer.</p> <p>The heartbreaking news was announced by Blondie’s founding members, singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, in a solemn statement shared to the band’s official Instagram page on Monday.</p> <p>“It is with profound sadness that we relay news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke following a private battle with cancer,” they wrote. “Clem was not just a drummer. Harry and Stein praised him as a force both on and off stage, calling him “a source of inspiration” and remembering his “vibrant spirit, infectious enthusiasm, and rock solid work ethic”.</p> <p>Burke’s thunderous drumming powered Blondie’s biggest hits, including “Call Me” and “One Way Or Another”. Though the band originally disbanded in 1982, they reunited in 1997, with Burke once again behind the kit. His final album with the band was Pollinator, released in 2017.</p> <p>Beyond Blondie, Burke’s legendary career saw him perform alongside music greats such as David Bowie, Bob Dylan, the Ramones – with whom he briefly played drums in 1987 – as well as Eurythmics, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett and countless others. As the band wrote, Burke was a self-proclaimed “Rock & Roll survivalist”, whose versatility and dedication made him a beloved collaborator in every circle he entered.</p> <p>Burke is survived by his wife of over 20 years, Ellen Burke. The couple, who married in 2003, did not have children. The type of cancer Burke battled was not disclosed in the band’s announcement.</p> <p>Harry and Stein concluded their tribute with a message of gratitude and mourning: “His influence and contributions have spanned decades and genres, leaving an indelible mark on every project he was a part of. We extend our deepest condolences to Clem’s family, friends, and fans around the world. Cricket world mourns passing of Ashes legend

<p>Peter Lever, the former England fast bowler and a key member of the victorious 1970-71 Ashes side, has passed away at the age of 84. His former county, Lancashire, confirmed the news on Thursday.</p> <p>“We are deeply saddened by the news that Peter Lever has passed away, aged 84,” Lancashire posted on X. “Peter was inducted into our Hall of Fame last year after playing 301 First-Class matches between 1960 and 1976 — taking 796 wickets. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”</p> <p>Lever played 17 Test matches and 10 One-Day Internationals for England, including the famous inaugural One Day International in 1971. Known for his aggressive pace and sharp movement, he left a lasting impact on the game.</p> <p>His England career began in 1970 against a Rest of the World XI at The Oval, where he took an impressive 7-83, dismissing cricketing greats such as Garry Sobers, Mushtaq Mohammad, Graeme Pollock, Clive Lloyd and Mike Procter. Although the match was later stripped of its Test status, his performance earned him an official England debut later that year in the Ashes series opener in Perth.</p> <p>Lever played a crucial role in England's 1970-71 Ashes triumph, which remains the last time Australia was whitewashed at home. He returned to Australia in 1975 and delivered a career-best performance, taking 6-38 in Melbourne. On the first day of that Test, he dismissed four of Australia’s top five batsmen for just two runs. Despite England securing an innings victory in that match, it was their only win in the six-Test series.</p> <p>However, one of the most defining moments of Lever's career came in 1975 during a Test match against New Zealand in Auckland. A bouncer he bowled struck debutant Ewen Chatfield on the unprotected left temple, causing him to collapse on the pitch. Chatfield's heart stopped, leading to fears that he had died, but he was revived through CPR by England physiotherapist Bernard Thomas. The traumatic incident deeply affected Lever, who later admitted that he contemplated retirement.</p> <p>Lever played only one more Test match after that, featuring in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s in 1975, where he took two wickets in a drawn game. He retired from first-class cricket the following year, concluding a distinguished career with Lancashire.</p> <p>Peter Lever will be remembered as a fierce competitor and a dedicated servant of English cricket. <p>Fred Stolle has died at the age of 86.</p> <p>The tennis icon, with the nickname “Fiery”, began his career in the tennis world as a ball boy at the Davis Cup between Italy and the United States in 1951.</p> <p>He progressed through the ranks and made his breakthrough in 1965 at the French Open. </p> <p>The following year, he played at the US Open and achieved some of his best results in doubles, claiming 10 major doubles titles and another seven mixed doubles crowns.</p> <p>He was also a member of the Australian Davis Cup team, helping the nation claim three straight Davis Cup titles from 1964-66. </p> <p>Following his career on the court, Stolle made his debut in the commentary booth alongside John Newcombe and Tony Trabert, and became known to tennis fans for his insight and humour. </p> <p>Tributes have poured in from giants of the tennis world, with former teammate and friend Rod Laver leading tributes with an emotional post on X. </p> <p>“As I wrote in my book on the Golden Era of Aussie tennis, Fred Stolle was too nice a guy to hold a grudge,” he wrote.</p> <p>“He won many grand slams and was in the finals of many more.</p> <p>“It took the best to beat the best. We never tired of reliving the past as we travelled the world looking into the future with an enduring love of the sport. "A miracle": Man walks away from horror crash

<p>A man has walked away with only minor injuries after surviving a horrific crash in Sydney's north. </p> <p>The horrific scene unfolded when the man's car was crushed after he collided with a truck on the Spit Bridge in Manly on Monday morning. </p> <p>The man in his 40s was cut out of the wreckage by firefighters, with NSW Ambulance confirming that he was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital after sustaining minor injuries to his back and neck.</p> <p>Many people were stunned after seeing images of the mangled vehicle, wondering how the driver managed to walk away relatively unscathed. </p> <p>“How good are those first responders to get him out alive. Bloody heroes every single one of them,” one person said, while another added, “That is a miracle.”</p> <p>“So glad he is OK! Home and Away icon bids farewell after 33 years

<p>In news that has sent shockwaves through lounge rooms across the country, Lynne McGranger, the heart and soul of <em>Home and Away</em>, is preparing to hang up her iconic apron and bid farewell to her beloved character, Irene Roberts.</p> <p>After an impressive 33 years of delivering heartfelt performances, dishing out sage advice and reminding every misbehaving local to "listen here, girlie", McGranger will be making her emotional exit later this year.</p> <p>Seven has promised fans that Irene’s departure will be one for the history books – no, not via the usual dramatic Summer Bay methods of freak storms, runaway cars or inexplicable amnesia, but an “emotional exit” that “cannot be missed”.</p> <p>While details are tightly under wraps, we can only speculate: Will Irene sail off into the sunset? Open a surf club for wayward teens? Or finally take that well-earned break from all the Summer Bay chaos and settle somewhere where people aren’t constantly getting lost at sea?</p> <p>Fans, naturally, have been left reeling. Social media has been flooded with messages of heartbreak, nostalgia and a desperate plea for Irene to return – even if only for a guest appearance or as a ghostly vision (a <em>Home and Away</em> classic).</p> <p>Lynne herself has spoken out about the farewell, calling it “bittersweet” to leave a role that has been not just a job, but a family. "After almost 33 years in my dream role and working every day with people I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life,” she said.</p> <p>Ever the class act, Lynne expressed gratitude to the crew, writers and, of course, the fans – those who have stuck by Irene through every high, low and dramatic face-off at the Diner.</p> <p>And let’s not forget Irene’s legendary status. <em>TV Week</em> readers ranked her as the second Greatest Australian TV Character of All Time (although we suspect if the voting had been left solely to <em>Home and Away</em> die-hards, she’d have taken the crown).</p> <p>Julie McGauran, <em>Home and Away</em>’s Executive Producer, summed it up best: “Lynne’s extraordinary portrayal of down-to-earth Irene Roberts is why the character is held with such great affection by fans around the world.”</p> <p>Despite wrapping up filming in March, Irene will still grace our screens for months to come – enough time for fans to prepare themselves emotionally (and stock up on tissues). <p>Former<em> Home and Away</em> stars Luke Mitchell and Rebecca Breeds have announced the birth of their first child. </p> <p>The Aussie actors shared the news that Breeds, 37, had given birth in a joint Instagram post including some gorgeous images of their newborn. </p> <p>Revealing they welcomed a boy, they wrote: "Welcome to the world little man. Beloved Man About the House actor passes away

<p>English actor Brian Murphy best known for his role as George Roper in <em>Man About the House </em>and its spinoff series <em>George and Mildred</em> has died aged 92. </p> <p>The star's agent confirmed he died on Sunday at his home in Kent, with his wife and actress, Linda Regan, by his side. </p> <p>"It is with the greatest of sadness that we have to announce the death of our client actor Brian Murphy," the actor's agent, Thomas Bowington, said in a statement to <em>Deadline</em>. </p> <p>"It is almost impossible to describe the depth of his talent and humanity. A truly joyful and profoundly good hearted man."</p> <p>Regan has since paid tribute to the actor, who she was married to for over 30 years, with an emotional message. </p> <p>"My love for you will never die. RIP sweetheart," she wrote to X, alongside a photo of them kissing. </p> <p>"I will love you forever darling, and all your wishes will be carried out as you wanted. Sixties pop icon passes away aged 78

<p>British pop icon Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, with the BBC confirming the news by citing a statement from her spokesperson. </p> <p>“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull,” the statement read. </p> <p>“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”</p> <p>Faithfull was best known for her debut single <em>As Tears Go By</em> which reached the UK top 10 in 1964. </p> <p>She was also famously the girlfriend of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in the 60s, becoming a muse for the rock star, inspiring songs such as <em>Wild Horses </em>and <em>You Can't Always Get What You Want</em>.</p> <p>Tributes have poured in for the singer, with Jagger describing her as "a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress," saying he was "so saddened" by the loss. </p> <p>His Rolling Stones bandmate Keith Richards shared that he was "so sad" following her death and that he "will miss her". </p> <p>Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood posted an old picture of him, Faithfull and Richards in a recording studio with the caption "Farewell dear Marianne". </p> <p>He then shared a more recent photo of the pair with the caption: "Marianne will be dearly missed. Bless her xx".</p> <p>Throughout her life, the singer had suffered multiple health problems, including bulimia, breast cancer and emphysema caused by decades of smoking.</p> <p>After a period of drug addiction and homelessness in the early 1970s, Faithfull resurrected her career with the critically acclaimed album Broken English in 1979. "It doesn't go away": Former NSW premier reflects on Lindt siege

<p>Former NSW premier Mike Baird has reflected on the Lindt cafe siege that left two hostages dead in December 2014, revealing his struggle with post-traumatic stress. </p> <p>Baird, who was the state premier at the time of the attack, said it was his mother - who is a psychologist - who first noticed his signs of PTSD after he was tasked with coordinating a response to the siege. </p> <p>"I ignored it and there was other things to get on with and be busy about. But I should have listened," Baird told <em><a href="https://9now.nine.com.au/60-minutes/mike-baird-former-nsw-premier-mental-health-struggle-10-years-after-lindt-cafe-siege/e5376455-411a-4b25-b71d-526eb86f7995" target="_blank" rel="noopener">60 Minutes</a></em>. </p> <p>Reflecting on the terrifying day, he said, "Everyone just wanted them out. And you know, for it not to happen, there's a deep grief in that. And I think the impact is felt by everyone."</p> <p>"To have that loss of Tori and Katrina, I'll never lose that," Baird said, referring to the two hostages who were tragically killed during the siege.</p> <p>"It's just impossible not to feel guilt."</p> <p>Baird admitted he struggled to validate his own mental struggles, saying it feels like a very small part of the impact the siege had on Australians, including the enormous pain felt by the families of cafe manager Tori Johnson and barrister Katrina Dawson who lost their lives. </p> <p>"In my mind there's a sense of, 'I shouldn't be impacted that way'," Baird said. "I was just there as an observer and trying to coordinate a response." </p> <p>Several hostages who survived the terrifying ordeal, including Louisa Hope, told 60 Minutes that the memories will never leave them.</p> <p>"For me personally it does not go away, but it is the thing that pushes me to continue to find the good or to find a good out of that awful situation," she said.</p> <p><em>Image credits: 60 Minutes</em></p>

Australia passes world-first social media ban for children under-16

<p>Children under-16 will be banned from using social media from the end of next year, after the world-first legislation passed the parliament on Thursday. </p> <p>The law means that anyone under the age of 16 will be blocked from using platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook among others, and will make the platforms liable with fines of up to $50 million for failing to prevent these children from holding social media accounts. </p> <p>The Senate passed the bill 34 votes to 19 last Thursday, with The House of Representatives approving the legislation by 102 votes to 13 on Wednesday.</p> <p>The platforms will have one year to work out how to implement the ban before penalties are enforced, however the laws have received mixed reviews from tech companies and mental health experts alike. </p> <p>Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said the legislation had been “rushed.”</p> <p>Digital Industry Group Inc., an advocate for the platforms in Australia, also questioned how it would work and the impact it would have on children. </p> <p>“The social media ban legislation has been released and passed within a week and, as a result, no one can confidently explain how it will work in practice – the community and platforms are in the dark about what exactly is required of them,” DIGI managing director Sunita Bose said.</p> <p>The platforms cannot force people to provide government-issued identity documents, including the Digital ID, to assess their age. </p> <p>“This policy will hurt vulnerable young people the most, especially in regional communities and especially the LGBTQI community, by cutting them off,” Greens senator David Shoebridge said. </p> <p>Mental health experts agreed that the social media ban could dangerously isolate children who used social media to find support. </p> <p>Christopher Stone, executive director of Suicide Prevention Australia, added the legislation failed to consider positive aspects of social media in supporting young people's mental health. </p> <p>“The government is running blindfolded into a brick wall by rushing this legislation. Young Australians deserve evidence-based policies, not decisions made in haste,” Stone said in a statement.</p> <p>Online safety campaigner Sonya Ryan, whose 15-year-old daughter Carly was murdered by a 50-year-old pedophile who pretended to be a teenager online, described the Senate vote as a “monumental moment in protecting our children from horrendous harms online," in an email to the AP. </p> <p>Wayne Holdsworth, a father whose son took his own life following a sextortion scam, also approved the decision to introduce the age restriction. </p> <p>Meta Platforms has responded to the new laws saying: “Naturally, we respect the laws decided by the Australian Parliament."</p> <p>“However, we are concerned about the process which rushed the legislation through while failing to properly consider the evidence, what industry already does to ensure age-appropriate experiences, and the voices of young people.”</p> <p><em>Image: </em><em>BigTunaOnline / Shutterstock.com</em></p>

Home and Away star's urgent scam warning

<p><em>Home and Away</em> star Ethan Browne, best-known for his role as Tane Parata on the show, has issued an urgent warning to fans following an influx of social media accounts impersonating him. </p> <p>The actor took to Instagram to warn fans about people impersonating him online. </p> <p>"Please protect yourselves and don't message anyone who claims to be me," Ethan said.</p> <p>"THEY ARE ALL SCAMS!"</p> <p>He went on to explain that he would never message anyone privately, and his Instagram and personal Facebook page are his only social media accounts. </p> <p>"I would never privately message anyone other than my family and friends," he wrote. </p> <p>"This Instagram and my private Facebook account (for family and friends) are my only social media accounts. Unfortunately I can't control  every false account out there. Please be wise and don't respond to them."</p> <p>Fake Facebook profiles pretending to be actors often pop up on certain fan pages and interact with fans. </p> <p>One fan recalled her experience in one Home and Away Facebook group, saying that a  a fake Ethan profile had reached out to her and started sending private messages, resulting in her blocking him. </p> <p>Another fan said: "I got one from him (supposedly) and I said he was one of my favourite actors on the show next thing, I know he wanted a photo of me and the pennies dropped I was being scammed."</p> <p>"I was scammed [by someone] who I thought was Tane from Home and Away, but it wasn't even him... he was saying he wanted to meet up and go out with me," another fan wrote. </p> <p><em style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">Image: Seven/ Instagram</em> </p>

World's oldest man passes away aged 112

He never smoked, rarely drank and followed no special diet, apart from his ritual of having fish and chips every Friday. </p> <p>"If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much — if you do too much of anything — you're going to suffer eventually," Tinniswood said.</p> <p>His family also said the great-grandfather had an "active retirement", volunteering as a church elder in Blundellsands United Reform Church where he also gave sermons.</p> <p>They have paid tribute to him, saying: "We would like to thank the many people in the UK and across the world who sent well wishes to John on his recent birthdays.</p> <p>"He really appreciated these birthday greetings and other messages of support."</p> <p>"John always liked to say thank you. So on his behalf , [we] thank all those who cared for him over the years, including his carers at the Hollies care home, his GPs, district nurses, occupational therapist and other NHS staff."</p> <p>Tinniswood lived through two world wars and served in the British Army Pay Corps in World War II.</p> <p>He is survived by his daughter Susan, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. </p> <p>The world's oldest living woman, and oldest living person, is Japan's Tomiko Itooka, who is currently 116.</p> <p><em>Image: Instagram/ Guinness World Records</em></p> <p> </p>

Historic Aged Care Bill passes Parliament

<p>Older Australians will now receive greater support to live at home for longer among other reforms to aged care. </p> <p>On Monday, the Albanese Labor Government's Aged Care Bill passed Parliament, meaning that older Australians and their loved ones will have access to a better quality system. </p> <p>The bill will provide in-home help and improve conditions and protections for those living in aged-care facilities from July, with older people and their loved ones having a greater say about the care and services they receive.</p> <p>These include protections to speak up when they're not satisfied with a service, and better equipping providers to handle complaints more effectively. </p> <p>Around 1.4 million Aussies will receive support for nursing, occupational therapy and day-to-day tasks to help them live independently in their homes by 2035. </p> <p>The new $4.3 billion Support At Home system has been put in place with the hopes of improving home care wait times and will provide for home modifications and assistive technology to help older Australians maintain their independence for longer. </p> <p>The $5.6 billion package will be one of the largest improvements to the sector in 30 years, according to Aged Care Minister Anika Wells.</p> <p>“This act means that people will be the beating heart of a strengthened aged-care sector that replaces fear with trust,” she said. </p> <p>To help fund the cost of care, those not already in aged or home care will have to make contributions for non-clinical care costs, but the amount they pay would depend on their income and assets. </p> <p>The most anyone would pay for these independence and everyday living costs would be e $130,000 after the the lifetime contribution cap was raised from $76,000.</p> <p>The Commonwealth will remain the main funder of aged care. </p> <p>While the government will spend $930 million over the next four years, the new structure will save the budget $12.6 billion over the next 11 years.</p> <p><em>Image: Shutterstock</em></p>
