"Cruel twist" in death of policeman at engagement party

The joyous occasion of an engagement party, brimming with excitement and anticipation, turned into a scene of profound sorrow and disbelief for Lilly Watts and her loved ones when, in a devastating turn of events, her fiancé – Senior Constable Liam Trimmer – met with a fatal accident, leaving behind shattered dreams and a future that will forever remain incomplete.

It has now been revealed that Liam, a dedicated member of the Western Australia Police Force, wasn't just set to embark on a new chapter of his life with Lilly. Their intention, as they celebrated their impending union, was also to announce the impending arrival of their first child.

In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, in a gesture of solidarity and support, friends, family and even strangers have rallied around Lilly in her time of need. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to provide some solace amidst the darkness that has enveloped her life. The outpouring of generosity has been overwhelming, with more than $52,000 raised in just six hours since the campaign's inception.

Melinda Kelly, an old friend of Lilly's, wrote: "Tragically, on Saturday night, Lilly’s world was shattered by a freak accident that claimed the life of her beloved fiancé, Senior Constable Liam Trimmer.

"The evening was meant to be a joyous celebration of Lilly and Liam’s recent engagement and announcing their pregnancy, a huge milestone in their journey together. Friends and family gathered to share in their happiness. In a cruel twist of events, Liam’s life was cut short leaving behind a void that can never be filled.

"Lilly, a dedicated Clinical Registered Nurse at Royal Perth Hospital, now finds herself navigating uncharted waters. Not only has she lost her soulmate, but she also carries the precious gift of new life within her. At almost 14 weeks pregnant, Lilly now faces the prospect of raising a child without her beloved partner, while also grappling with the financial responsibilities that come with homeownership.

"This GoFundMe campaign seeks to provide some solace amidst the darkness that has enveloped Lilly’s life. While no amount of money can bring back Liam or erase the pain of his loss, we hope to ease the burden that now weighs heavily on Lilly’s shoulders. The funds raised will enable her to access the support she needs, from counselling to covering the costs of daily living and preparing for the arrival of her baby.

"Lilly’s resilience and unwavering spirit have always been her defining qualities, and now, more than ever, she needs our love and support. Let us come together as a community to rally around her in this time of need, offering whatever assistance we can to help her navigate the challenging road ahead. Together, we can help light the path forward for Lilly and honor the memory of the man she loved so dearly."

Liam Trimmer's contributions to the police force have not gone unnoticed. Described as "skilful" and possessing a "great sense of humour" and "passion to excel" by his colleagues, Liam was a respected member of the force who approached his duties with dedication and courage. His loss has been deeply felt within the police community, where he was admired for his unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the public.

As tributes pour in from across the region, it is evident that Liam's legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.

Images: Facebook \ GoFundMe

Manhunt after policeman injured in shocking hit and run

A senior constable has undergone surgery after he was seriously injured during a ‘shocking’ hit and run, as police hunt the runaway driver.

State Traffic Commander, Mike Bell said the officer is in “good spirits” despite suffering serious leg injuries and head wounds.

Police were conducting traffic duties around 6:10 pm on Holcombe Road in Warnbro, south of Perth. The officer apparently attempted to stop a speeding motorcycle.

“The traffic officer has stepped out on the road to stop the motorcycle and has indicated that,” Commander Bell said.

“The motorcycle has moved further to the right and made his intentions clear that he was not prepared to stop.”

“The officer and the motorcycle have come into contact. The officer was knocked to the ground.”

Commander Bell said the motorcyclist continued to drive on the incorrect side of the road and did not stop. The injured officer was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment, where he on Thursday underwent surgery to his leg.

Police are hunting a “very distinctive motorcycle” and are calling on the public for information.

“I have no doubt some members of the public will know this bike,” Commander Bell said.

“It would appear to be a Caucasian male with a dark helmet, he was wearing shorts and had a black backpack on.”

Commander Bell said police had received complaints about traffic behavior in the area.

Nola Holden has lived in the area for 42 years and said hearing sirens was a common occurrence.

“They had been doing speed checks on our streets because it’s shocking here for speeding,” she said. Personal care worker Marcy Dougan was driving home from work when she came across the scene, stopping to help and give first aid.

“He had a nasty gash on the back of the head .... there was an open wound on the leg,” she said.

“He was in a bit of shock, I just kept reassuring him and keeping him conscious.”

Ms Dougan said she immediately jumped into action to help, claiming she’d do it again without thinking.

“You don’t go to work thinking that will happen ... they’re out to protect us, it’s the least I can do,” she said.

Major Crash officers are working to determine the cause of the collision and WorkSafe will launch a separate investigation.

Commander Bell said traffic work was a “dangerous” job.

Anyone with information regarding the crash, or who recognises the motorcycle and/or rider pictured is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestopperswa.com.au.

Image: 7 News

“We are going to be OK”: Doctor pulled over for speeding amazed by policeman’s actions

A US doctor received a meaningful present after she was pulled over by a police officer for speeding.

Dr Sarosh Ashraf Janjua, a cardiologist at a coronavirus quarantine unit in Duluth, was pulled over by State Trooper Brian Schwartz for speeding on her way to work on March 21.

But instead of a fine, the strooper gave her a firm warning along with five N95 filtering face masks that were allocated for him by the state of Minnesota.

“He … firmly told me it was very irresponsible of me to be speeding, especially since I would not only take up resources if I got into an accident, but would also not be in a position to help patients,” Janjua wrote on a Facebook post.

“I waited for him to write me a ticket. Instead, he told me he was going to let me off with a warning.

“He reached in to hand me what I assumed was my license back … Five N95 masks, from the supply the state had given him for his protection.”

Janjua said she has been having fears that supplies of adequate protective equipment would dwindle, putting emergency responders and healthcare workers like her at greater risk.

“This complete stranger, who owed me nothing and is more on the front lines than I am, shared his precious masks with me, without my even asking,” Janjua wrote.

“We are going to be OK.”

Schwartz gave Janjua his masks after noticing “what appeared to be two used N95 masks in Ashraf’s purse that he assumed she was reusing”, the Minnesota State Patrol told CNN.

In early March, officials from the US Department of Health and Human Services said the country had only about 35 million of the 3.5 billion N95 masks needed in the event of a full-blown pandemic.

The White House is forecasting that between 100,000 and 240,000 people in the US will die from the coronavirus.

“As sobering a number as that is, we should be prepared for it,” said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Police officer drives grieving stranger 160km to be with his family

When you get pulled over by a police officer, you don’t expect to be let off scot-free – let alone become friends with the man who did it. But that’s exactly what happened for one grief-stricken US man, who was the recipient of a beautiful act of kindness from a sympathetic policeman.

Mark Ross tragically lost his sister in a horrific car accident and was desperately rushing from Indiana to be with his family in Detroit, Michigan. He was pulled over on the way by Sergeant David Robison who noticed Ross speeding – and on a suspended license, no less.

“I explained to the officer that my sister had died and that I needed to get to my mother as soon as possible,” Ross wrote on Facebook. “I broke down crying and he saw the sincerity in my cry.”

After witnessing his heartbroken tears, Sgt Robison did something completely unexpected, offering to drive him the final 160km to his family.

“He just said, ‘Come on, let’s get you back to your mum and family.’” Ross told Click on Detroit. “I just got in the car and we drove.

“As I was getting out of the car, he just reached over and was like, 'Mark? Can I pray for you?'" he added. "'Sure. Go ahead, I need it.' And he said one of the most meaningful heartfelt prayers and it really touched me... He made me really see a light. There's so much stuff going on in the world right now, but he really opened up a door for me and I'm humbly grateful for that officer."

Ross and his family were so grateful for Sgt Robison’s help, they even invited him to his sister’s memorial service.

What a beautiful story! Police make dinner for lonely elderly couple found in tears

Four policeman in Rome have taken in an elderly couple after finding them crying and shouting due to “incurable loneliness”. After being called to their apartment by neighbours who suspected a domestic incident, the police arrived to find no crime had been committed, only a desperately lonely 84-year-old woman and her 94-year-old husband.

The couple, who have been together for almost seven decades, hadn’t had a visitor in a long time after their neighbours moved away. They were found in tears, crying not only because of their loneliness, but because of the horrible headlines they heard on the news and the fact that less people were coming to the Italian capital due to these recent events.

Policemen Andrew, Alexander, Ernesto and Mirko decided to do something nice for the couple, putting together a spaghetti dinner for the couple, chatting with them all evening.

What a lovely story! Why Prince William wanted to become a policeman

Today he’s the second-in-line for the throne, but back in the day, Prince William was just a regular, bright-eyed young boy with dreams unencumbered by the prospect of royal duty.

At the tender age of five, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, the young Prince revealed he wanted to become a policeman. The reason? “So I can protect Mummy.” His revelation is particularly poignant given it was around this age that William began to notice his mother’s tears as her fractured relationship with Prince Charles began to unravel.

Diana once took William to meet with Special Escort Group policeman, who gave the young Prince a pint-sized uniform, complete with hat and gloves (see above).

According to the Daily Mail, after his law enforcement ambitions lost their appeal, William decided he wanted to become an astronaut instead, after becoming fascinated with the NASA space program. There was even a period where the Prince dreamed of becoming a fire-eater!

Tell us in the comments below, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Related links:

15 rarely seen childhood photos of Prince Harry

Photos of Princess Diana in 1991 circulate

In pictures: Prince George’s first official royal engagement
