Police raid Hunter Valley bus crash depots

<p>Police have issued defect and infringement notices to the transport company involved in the Hunter Valley bus tragedy after conducting raids on two depots.</p> <p>The crash on June 11 was the deadliest seen on Australian roads in over 30 years, <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/more-than-we-can-bear-hunter-valley-bus-crash-victims-identified" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leaving 10 dead and nine in hospital</a>.</p> <p>Police and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator inspectors checked 20 buses at Linq Busline depots in Wyong, on the NSW Central Coast, and East Gresford, near Newcastle, on June 15.</p> <p>Seven defect and two infringement notices were issued after a cracked windscreen, oil leaks, inoperative seatbelts and vehicle lights, and insecure seats were discovered.</p> <p>A defect notice is issued when a problem needs to be fixed before the vehicle can be deemed safe to drive.</p> <p>“The joint operation involved a comprehensive audit of documentation relating to fatigue, driver management, vehicle servicing and maintenance records, and safety management systems,” police said.</p> <p>Linq said “one major defect identified in the fleet has been rectified” and minor defects were being rectified in accordance with the timelines set by the regulator.</p> <p>The evening of June 15 saw heartbroken family and friends of the victims gathered near the crash site to mourn their loved ones and thank frontline workers.</p> <p>Most of the 25 survivors sent to hospital following the crash have since been discharged.</p> <p>The nine who remain in hospital are in stable condition, with seven at John Hunter Hospital and two at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, according to NSW Health.</p> <p>Over 900 donations have been made since June 14 to fund survivors and victims’ families, with almost $500,00 raised.</p> <p>The tragedy has shaken the Singleton community, with seven locals among the 10 people killed when the bus crashed on its way back from a wedding.</p> <p>Cessnock mayor Jay Suvaal said the community came together to support the loved ones of those lost in the crash and pay tribute to the first responder.</p> <p>“We’re a really tight-knit community that does come together and support each other in times of need,” he told AAP.</p> <p>Locals have offered accommodation and support for victims’ families.</p> <p>“People are just dropping in things like cake and biscuits to our crisis centres to make sure there’s food available for the people there,” Suvaal said.</p> <p>Devastated friends and family continue to visit a makeshift memorial at the crash site, which is strewn with flowers, cards and teddy bears.</p> <p>Counselling and support is being offered at centres in Singleton and Branxton.</p> <p>Health Minister Ryan Park said mental health services would remain available as long as necessary.</p> <p>“What I do know about these types of traumatic and devastating events is that often it’s not in the hours and days afterwards when people need additional support — it’s often in the weeks and months,” he said.</p> <p>“They’ve been through unimaginable grief and suffering.”</p> <p>The insurer managing the crash compensation claims is being urged to ensure that extended family and friends of the victims receive support.</p> <p>Under the state’s compulsory third-party scheme, only those directly involved in the crash or who had suffered psychological trauma due to the death or severe injury of a close relative are eligible for support.</p> <p>Slater and Gordon layer Doug Williams urged the insurer to show compassion to those who have suffered due to the cash regardless of their ties to the victims.</p> <p>“It’s (the scheme) so limited that the close friends and the extended family as well as members of the small community where many of those killed lived would be ineligible to claim treatment,” Williams said.</p> <p>Many of the victims were heavily involved with the Singleton Roosters AFL club and the AFL Central Coast has cancelled its senior matches the weekend following the crash out of respect.</p> <p>Sydney Swans players will be bearing black armbands ahead of their next game against the Lions in memory of the victims.</p> <p>“We are deeply saddened by the horrific events over the weekend,” Swans chief Tom Harley said.</p> <p>The bus driver, Brett Button, 58, <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/hunter-valley-bus-driver-faces-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">faced Cessnock Local Court</a> on June 13 charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving causing death.</p> <p><em>Image credit: Getty</em></p>

Alleged multi-million dollar Picasso found during drug raid

<p dir="ltr">Authorities in Iraq claim to have unearthed an original Picasso painting “worth millions of dollars” during a routine drug raid in the Diyala, a central province east of Baghdad.</p> <p dir="ltr">The alleged Picasso was in the possession of three suspects who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the trade and transport of narcotics, authorities said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“A painting belonging to the international painter Picasso was seized in their possession,” the director of the anti-narcotics media office, Colonel Bilal Sobhi, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency.</p> <p dir="ltr">Images of the artwork and details of its condition have not been disclosed, and according to the National, the painting has yet to be authenticated. </p> <p dir="ltr">The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has also yet to share if any other notable artworks or cultural artefacts were discovered during the raids.</p> <p dir="ltr">Colonel Sobhi said that the raid was part of a larger country-wide crackdown on the illicit drug trade that began earlier this year. </p> <p dir="ltr">Since the operation began, authorities claim they have arrested 1,300 suspects and seized “44kg of narcotic substances” as well as “37kg of stimulants, including crystal”.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-846bbf11-7fff-2389-d9d3-77ad94a245ba"></span></p>

Roving gangs of bored monkeys raid homes

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With the floods of tourists that usually flock to Bali unable to holiday on the resort island, its hungry resident monkeys have taken to raiding villagers’ homes in search of food and entertainment.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Villagers in Sangeh say grey macaques have been coming to their homes from the nearby Sangeh Monkey Forest, spending their time hanging out on roofs and waiting for the right time to snatch a snack.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With concerns that the monkeys may turn wild or lead a full-on assault on the village, residents have been taking food, including fruit and peanuts, to the forest.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We are afraid that the hungry monkeys will turn wild and vicious,” villager Saskara Gustu Alit said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">About 600 macaques live in the sanctuary that surrounds the famous Pura Bukit Sari temple.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Normally, the protected area is a popular spot for local residents shooting wedding photos, as well as international holidaymakers.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Prior to the pandemic, over 6,000 visitors typically came to the forest each month, but these numbers have dropped drastically to about 500 people, as Indonesia banned all foreign travelers from entering Bali in July.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The sanctuary has also been closed to local residents, meaning the monkeys have had no visitors at all.</span></p> <p><img style="width: 0px; height: 0px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7843827/gettyimages-1135018189.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/ec2eada32b94480fa0759c0eaf95153a" /></p> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Image: Getty Images</span></em></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Operations manager Made Mohon said that the closure has also meant that the sanctuary is running low on money to buy food for the monkeys.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Donations from villagers have made a difference, but they are also donating less and less as they feel the economic sting, he said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“This prolonged pandemic is beyond our expectations,” Made Mohon said. “Food for monkeys has become a problem.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The monkeys’ daily diet of 200 kg of cassava, their staple food, and 10kg of bananas costs about 850,000 rupiah ($80) a day.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Though macaques are omnivores and can eat a range of jungle animals and plants, the monkeys living in the sanctuary have developed a preference for other things, thanks to their contact with humans.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Often the monkeys will wander into the village and sit on roofs, causing mischief by removing and dropping roof tiles or making off with religious offerings placed outside by villagers.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“A few days ago I attended a traditional ceremony at a temple near the Sangeh forest,” Gustu Alit said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“When I parked my car and took out two plastic bags containing food and flowers as offerings, two monkeys suddenly appeared and grabbed it all and ran into the forest very fast.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since the monkeys usually have visitors to interact with - whether they’re jumping on shoulders, stealing sunglasses, or pulling at clothes - Gustu Alit believes boredom, not just hunger, is driving the monkeys.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“That’s why I have urged villagers to come to the forest to play with the monkeys and offer them food,” he said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I think they need to interact with humans as often as possible so that they do not go wild.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><em>Image: Getty Images</em></span></p>

Cancer fraudster Belle Gibson's home raided by authorities

<p>Cancer conwoman Belle Gibson's home has been raided by authorities over half a million dollars worth of unpaid fines.</p> <p>Victoria's Sheriff's office executed a "seizure and sale" warrant on Gibson's Northcote property in Melbourne's inner north on Friday.</p> <p>The founder of Whole Pantry was hit with a $410,000 fine in 2017 after being found guilty of five breaches of consumer law.</p> <p>Gibson sold thousands of copies of her cookbook and wellness app off the back of faking brain cancer and claiming she was cured by natural remedies and healthy living.</p> <p>The 29-year-old now owes over $500,000 in fines, penalties and interest for fraudulent activities.</p> <p>It's believed the items taken from Gibson's property will later be sold in an effort to obtain part of the outstanding fine.</p> <p>A Consumer Affairs Victoria spokeswoman confirmed the raid.</p> <p>“Ms Gibson owes the Victorian public a substantial debt and Consumer Affairs Victoria will continue to pursue repayment,” she said.</p> <p>“A warrant of seizure and sale on Ms Gibson was executed today by Sheriff’s officers at an address in Northcote.”</p> <p>The Federal Court in Australia found the mum-of-one engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct after she claimed to have been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009, only had four months to live and had rejected conventional treatments and chosen to heal herself naturally.</p> <p>The court also found she had lied about donating proceeds from sales of her book and the app The Whole Pantry to charities or good causes.</p> <p>Gibson’s Northcote home had previously been raided by sheriffs in January 2020 to try to recoup some of her unpaid debt.</p> <p>She sold more than 300,000 copies of her book before the deceit of her fake cancer story emerged in 2015.</p>

Woman raids wedding of man she is already married to

<p>A woman has raided the wedding of a man who she claims she is already married to after he reportedly told his wife he was heading out of town for work.</p> <p>Video footage of Abraham Muyunda, from Zambia, shows the father-of-three about to wed his loved before his hysterical wife stormed the church and demanded the ceremony to abruptly end.</p> <p>His bold plan was exposed after his wife caught wind of his secret ceremony by one of his neighbours, the <em><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.zambianobserver.com/video-angry-wife-storms-husbands-wedding-disrupts-ceremony/" target="_blank">Zambian Observer </a></em>reported.</p> <p>His wife then rushes to the church with video footage showing her trying to halt the ceremony.</p> <p>“This wedding can’t go on … this man here is my husband,” she says while marching up the aisle.</p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7838269/wedding-3.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/f484d1633fbb40bc9959500aacc5a83f" /></p> <p>Guests can be heard gasping in the background as the groom looks on with his hand on his chin.</p> <p>The footage showed no reaction from the new bride while Mr Muyunda’s alleged wife attempts to approach the couple before being stopped by the bridal party.</p> <p>“This man is my husband. We haven’t divorced,” she told him.</p> <p>She added: “we never quarrelled … I don’t know what is happening here”.</p> <p>She was seen carrying a baby in a papoose strapped to her back.</p> <p>She also reportedly had her other children in tow as she stormed into a Roman Catholic church in Chainda, an area of the capital Lusaka.</p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7838268/wedding-1.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/246ea1709c0d4d54a983ab7cb7bbc57f" /></p> <p>Local media write that Mr Muyunda was taken to a police station, with his bride allegedly aware he was married.</p> <p>Reports claim Mr Muyunda could be charged with bigamy, and face up to seven years in jail.</p> <p>The UN states that Zambia has two different marriage systems.</p> <p>One system is based on customary law and the other on modern statute law.</p> <p>The latter does not allow for polygamy, and anyone who tries to get married under statute law when they already have a husband or wife is liable to prosecution.</p>

Labor MP suspended after ASIO raid and suspected links to Chinese Communist Party

<p>Australian Federal Police and spy agency ASIO have raided the Sydney home of a NSW Labor MP amid allegations of a Chinese government plot to influence a serving politician.</p> <p>The Rockdale house belonging to NSW upper house Labor MP Shaoquett Moselmane was searched on Friday amid questions about his links to China.</p> <p>ASIO is focusing on whether Chinese government agents were aiming to influence Australian politics through Moselmane, the <em><a href="https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/nsw-mp-s-sydney-home-raided-as-asio-probes-china-links-20200626-p556f6.html">Sydney Morning Herald</a></em> reported.</p> <p>NSW Labor leader Jodi McKay said she had been told police and ASIO members had a warrant to search Moselmane’s parliamentary office.</p> <p>Moselmane’s membership of NSW Labor will be suspended and he will no longer sit in the Labor parliamentary caucus, McKay said.</p> <p>“There’s an expectation on MPs that, whatever they do, it’s in the best interests of the people of the state,” McKay said.</p> <p>“I’d hope every single MP in the parliament – not just on the Labor side but the Liberal and National Party side and crossbench – has that at the heart of their actions.</p> <p>“I’m very restricted in what I can and can’t say.”</p> <p>In April, Moselmane resigned as assistant president of the Legislative Council after repeatedly praising Chinese President Xi Jinping’s response to the coronavirus crisis.</p> <p>“For the People’s Republic of China, President Xi stepped up and provided that leadership. He mustered the resources of the nation and together with the great people of China – fought it and contained it,” Moselmane wrote on his personal website.</p> <p>He had taken nine privately funded trips to China since entering the NSW parliament in 2009, the <em>Sydney Morning Herald </em>reported. Disclosure records showed his transport and hospitality costs were often covered by Chinese government officials or agencies.</p>

"Beaten and pinned down": Christian church members dragged into street after raid by Chinese officials

Grant Denyer expresses fury as two busloads of Sydney vultures “raid” supermarkets in Bathurst

<p>TV presenter Grant Denyer has expressed his outrage after witnessing panic-buyers from Sydney travelling to regional cities “by the busload” to stock up on food and supplies.</p> <p><em>The Dancing With The Stars</em><span> </span>host claims to have seen a gang of coronavirus preppers “raiding” supermarkets in his hometown of Bathurst, 200km west of Sydney.</p> <p>The same group reportedly targeted two other central west NSW cities, Orange and Lithgow, before returning to Sydney.</p> <p>Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Grant wrote: “This is crazy. We live in Bathurst and we had two busloads of people from Sydney storm the town and raid our three supermarkets. Cop crackdown: Greek restaurants slammed for ripping off tourists

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tourists may be having the last laugh after a number of complaints about restaurants overcharging foreigners insanely high food and drink bills has led the Greek police to be involved. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mykonos has become the destination of dreams over the last decade especially and Greek restaurant and bar owners have used the ignorance of tourists to scam more money than necessary for meals and drinks – including $840 for six pieces of calamari. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Greek finance ministry has plans to conduct more than 50,000 raids in the next few weeks to target restaurants attempting to cheat customers. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A number of tourists have complained about the insane charges made for simple meals, including six pieces of calamari that rounded up to AUD$840. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The squid was apart of a $1350 rip-off bill that came with a AUD$97.20 grilled chicken dish. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another customer was faced with a hefty bill as well when he was charged more than AUD$220 for two glasses of prosecco at a different restaurant. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Reports claim officers have already closed down dozens of businesses who have been caught scamming their customers.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mykonos restaurant owners have denied the allegations of scamming tourists – claiming customers are fully aware of prices before they place an order. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, foreigners have spoken out against the “scam culture” on the island.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Me and my wife were dragged for a drink only to pay €230 ($AUD376) for a €20 ($AUD33) bottle of wine and a couple of sides,” tourist Yannis Psarras, from London, said according to </span><a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/travel/9361217/greek-cop-restaurants-tax-evasion-fraud/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Sun.</span></a></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“These guys run the ultimate scam.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“They invite you in on a non-existent offer — like free sunbeds — they don’t show you the price list. They list prices by 100 grams rather than per portion or per kilogram or something more standard.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It’s really a playbook of scamming tourists.”</span></p>

Almost 160 rabbits, guinea pigs and birds need homes after RSPCA raid

<p>At least 160 animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and mice have been found crowded in a house in Canberra’s south by the RSPCA. This is coming two weeks after the RSPCA were called to an animal hoarding case where 20 birds were found dead in their cage.</p><p>RSPCA chief executive Tammy Ven Dange said they were still processing the animals but at last count there were 160 and included pregnant animals.</p><p>Last year, the RSPCA in Canberra cared for an average of 400 animals at any given time. Ms Ven Dange said RSPA were currently housing more than 700 animals.</p><p>The animal welfare body are calling for new legislation to limit the number of animals a person can have in a home.
