An elderly couple has been found dead at their semi-rural property in a suspected murder-suicide, with neighbours and friends remembering them as well-loved socialites.

Stephen, 74, and Sally Starling, 75, were living a seemingly dream retirement filled with extensive global travels and events where they entertained their neighbours.

But, one of their neighbours tragically discovered the pair’s bodies at their Darling Downs property, near Armadale to the southeast of Perth.

After police were called to the home at around 6.45pm on Monday, the peaceful street was transformed into a crime scene as they scoured the property for evidence.

Detectives and forensic police returned to the scene to continue their search on Tuesday.

Neighbour Maureen Parkes said she was woken up in the early hours on Tuesday morning by lights coming up and down the driveway.

“About 2am I got up, looked out the window and police cars were there … the whole of the driveway was floodlit, so I knew something was wrong,” she said.

“This is a quiet place … I knew something was different.

Fellow neighbour Pat Hogge was surprised when police first appeared.

“It’s worrying that we were just sitting on the patio and suddenly police cars were coming,” she said.

Forensic police continue to search the Darling Downs property. Tips for buying a rod and reel

It’s amazing how often I see people fishing with tackle that isn’t suitable for the type of fish they’re chasing or the locations they’re fishing.

A good example of people using outfits that don’t suit the species of fish are people using surf outfits in freshwater, I’m not kidding, I’ve seen it more times that I care to remember. When you speak to these people about catching fish, they can’t understand why others having success but they aren’t. These days, there are plenty of quality combos for many types of fishing that won’t cost the earth that WILL increase the odds of catching fish tenfold!

Most weekend or holiday anglers can get by with one or two outfits that will cover just about every fishing type they’re likely to do. At least, that is, until they get the fishing bug and then the skies the limit!

Realistically, a two to four kilo spin rod of around two metres in length coupled with a 2-2500 sized spin reel, loaded with three to four kilogram breaking strain line will cover a huge array of fish species and fishing scenarios. An outfit such as that will be perfect for chasing trout, redfin, murray cod, golden perch, bream, whiting, pinky snapper, bass and any number of other river, lake and estuary type fish.

About the only fish or areas it won’t be suitable for is specialist fishing such as surf fishing, trolling or heavy offshore or bay fishing.

A spin casting outfit, as above, would probably covers just about 90 per cent of most anglers needs, a basic surf outfit for those fishing the ocean beaches, and a heavier bay type setup for chasing snapper etc.

Balanced tackle

One of the most important decisions you make when buying a fishing outfit for the first time is selecting a BALANCED outfit. A balanced outfit simply means a rod, reel and breaking strain line that go together to suit the style of fishing you’re doing, the type and size of fish you’re targeting and the weight of the terminal tackle being cast or fished.

For example, large (not necessarily heavy) reels are designed to balance with stiffer, heavy rods, heavy terminal tackle and fight bigger fish while light reels with more sensitive rods are designed to cast lighter terminal tackle and fight smaller fish. There’s a whole gamut of rods and reels between these two examples that are built to specialise in various fishing scenarios. But whatever that scenario might be, to get the most enjoyment from your fishing and the best fishing results, outfits that are balanced for the type of fishing you’ll mostly be doing should always be selected.

Knowledgeable fishing team members at your local Ray’s Outdoors store can give you a good selection of balanced outfits to select from to suit your fishing requirements and importantly, your budget.

Written by Trevor Hawkins and first appeared on the Ray’s Outdoors website. Visit them here for more great camping advice.

Related links:

What to consider before buying a kayak

Pre-trip checklist for caravans and motorhomes

What everyone NEEDS to know about venomous animal bites

Fisherman accidentally reels in a crocodile with his salmon

Picture this: You’re out for a relaxing day on the water when you get a bite. As you reel your catch in you notice it’s a nice big salmon. Pleased with yourself you continue to reel in your catch and then notice there’s something a little, well, fishy going on. Pardon the pun. It’s not just a salmon – THERE’S A CROCODILE ATTACHED TOO!

This is what happened to 40-year-old fisherman, Ben Stack, who managed to take some incredible pictures of the moment he accidentally pulled in a crocodile that was taking a bite out of a salmon he had hooked.

He has warned other Far North Queensland fishermen to be wary while out on the water after he came face-to-face with the salt-water crocodile on a recent trip.

Mr Stack was fishing in a small creek in Cape York when the Threadfin salmon he had just caught suddenly felt like a “heavy dead weight”.

Mr Stack thought the fish was stuck under a log, so he leaned over the side of the boat and started pulling in the line.

“I was hanging right over the side of the boat because I was trying to look in the dirty water to see what the fish was caught on,” he said.

Describing the close call, Mr Stack said what happened over the next few seconds “felt like a lifetime”.

“First, I saw a bit of silver, then I saw my lure with the fish’s mouth wide open,” he said.

“I lifted the leader some more and leaned over further to see what the fish was hooked up on. It was at this moment, I realised I was staring eye to eye with a solid salt-water crocodile.

“We were face-to-face and no more than 20 inches (51cm) apart. Fright kicked in, I released the leader and flew backwards into the boat.”

Related links:

Is the 14-foot stingray the largest freshwater fish ever caught?

Meet “Penguin” the magpie who thinks he’s human

Koalas caught in a sumo-wrestling match
