Trump escapes second assassination attempt

Former president Donald Trump has escaped a second assassination attempt while playing golf at his private club in Florida.

According to local authorities, a Secret Service agent was one hole ahead of Trump when he spotted a rifle barrel sticking out of the fence, which was later found to be an AK-47 with a scope, at the Trump International Golf Club, West Palm Beach on Sunday.

The Secret Service opened fire on the suspect, who fled the scene only to later be pulled over on the highway and taken into custody.

The FBI said Trump had been the subject of “an apparent assassination attempt” at his Florida golf club.

Officials at a media briefing after the incident said a witness took a photo of the suspect's car as he fled the scene, helping authorities track him down.

The Secret Service officer who was on the course and spotted the weapon was praised for doing a “fantastic job”.

“What they do is they have an agent that jumps one hole ahead of time towards where the [former] president was at, and he was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engaged that individual, at which time the individual took off,” the Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

“In the bushes where this guy was is an AK-47 style rifle with a scope, two backpacks – which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them and a GoPro, which he was going to take pictures with.”

Trump posted an update on his social media platform to assure his supporters he was unharmed in the attempted assassination.

“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!” he wrote.

“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.”

The attempted shooting comes just months after Trump was injured during another assassination attempt in July while speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Second person dies during Legionnaires outbreak

A man in his 60s has become the second person to die from Legionnaires amidst the outbreak in Victoria.

The man became unwell on July 27th and was admitted to hospital, where he died on August 1st.

His death comes just days after a woman in her 90s also died from the disease.

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Clare Looker confirmed that the state is now grappling with 77 confirmed cases, including two in the past 24 hours and another seven suspected cases.

Most people with the disease are over 40 years of age and are believed to have been exposed between July 5th and July 20th.

Despite the worrying case number, Looker confirmed that authorities have seen a reduction in cases and believe the situation is stabilising.

The source of the outbreak is being linked to a cooling tower in the Laverton North and Derrimut area of Melbourne, after more than 50 sites have been inspected.

Authorities believe there is a high likelihood they have already tested and treated the source, while sharing that weather patterns could explain the extent of the outbreak.

They have contacted another 1000 businesses across Melbourne, telling them to self-test and report to the Department of Health, Looker said.

Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the legionella bacteria, which is found in natural bodies of water as well as spas, warm water systems, potting mix and artificial systems that use water for cooling.

Symptoms usually include a chest infection, aches, headache, fever, cough and chills.

Victorian mother jailed for forced marriage that ended in daughter's murder

In a landmark case, a Victorian mother, Sakina Muhammad Jan, has become the first person in Australia to be jailed under forced marriage laws.

Jan was sentenced to three years in prison, with a minimum of 12 months to be served, for coercing her daughter, Ruqia Haidari, into marrying a man who later murdered her.

The case unfolded in Melbourne's County Court, where Jan was surrounded by emotional family and community members. Jan, an Afghan Hazara refugee, had arranged for her daughter to marry Mohammad Ali Halimi, a match brokered by a local Islamic community member in Shepparton. Despite Haidari's reluctance, Jan pressured her into a full marriage after initial dowry arrangements of $14,000 had been made.

Haidari then relocated to Perth with her new husband, Halimi. Six weeks later, she was brutally murdered, her throat slashed with a kitchen knife. Halimi was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment by a Western Australian court.

Judge Fran Dalziel, who presided over Jan's case, noted that Haidari had expressed her desire not to marry, preferring instead to pursue education and work. However, Jan had insisted, telling her daughter (according to Judge Dalziel): “Are you my mother or am I your mother? I can make decisions for you ... Do you think it is up to you? No matter what, you need to listen to me; your mother.”

Jan's lawyers argued that she believed she was acting in her daughter's best interests, reflecting her own experiences of being married at a young age without formal education. Nonetheless, Judge Dalziel condemned Jan's actions, stating that she had "abused" her maternal power and made it clear that forced marriage is illegal and carries significant consequences for perpetrators. “It must be made clear to everyone in our country that forced marriage is against the law,” she said. “You abused your power as her mother to override her desire to not marry Mr Halimi.”

After the sentencing, Jan had an emotional outburst, refusing to accept the judge's decision or sign a recognisance release order, which would have allowed her to serve two years of her sentence in the community under certain good-behaviour conditions. The courtroom scene escalated, requiring additional security and paramedics when another woman collapsed during the proceedings.

This case marks the first known conviction under Australia's forced marriage laws, which were introduced in 2013. Authorities have noted an increase in such cases, particularly involving young women and girls.

Images: Australian Federal Police \ 9News \ ABC News

Second marriage asset protection: What you need to know

Of paramount importance for many people in a second marriage is how to protect their assets if their relationship breaks down, or in the event of their death. Although second marriages bring a level of complexity, there are a number of strategies that you can implement to ensure that your assets are protected.

Let’s explore some of the options available to you and what you need to know to protect your assets.

Binding Financial Agreement

A Binding Financial Agreement, often referred to as a pre-nup, allows you and your spouse to put in place a legal agreement which outlines how your assets will be dealt with in the event that your relationship breaks down. Should you wish, it can also extend to the provision of financial support for either party. The intention is for each party to protect their own assets, and such agreements can be put in place prior to a marriage or during a marriage if both parties consent.

Like any legal document, a Binding Financial Agreement needs to be well drafted to ensure that it encompasses all relevant information, and it is important that you seek the advice of a family lawyer to assist you with putting this important document in place.

Joint Assets v Individual Assets

The manner in which you hold your assets is of paramount importance. All joint assets pass to the surviving party. If you and your spouse own a property as joint proprietors upon your death this property will automatically pass to your spouse. By changing the manner in which you hold the property from joint proprietors to tenants in common allows you and your spouse to deal with your individual interest in the property in your respective Wills.

Additionally, you need to be mindful of any bank accounts or other investments that you hold jointly with your spouse as these are not individual assets that you can make provision for and will pass to your spouse upon your death.

Your Will

It is imperative that you put a Will in place that is reflective of your current circumstances and adequately provides for both your spouse and your children from a previous relationship in the manner that you desire. For many parents in second marriages with children from a previous relationship, protecting their children’s inheritance is of paramount importance.

Discretionary Testamentary Trusts which are created in accordance with the provisions of your Will, can make provision for your spouse during their lifetime, whilst also ensuring that most of your assets go to your children.

If you are the sole registered proprietor of your residence in which you and your spouse reside you may make provision in your Will providing a life interest in your residence to your spouse subject to some conditions being adhered to. This will allow your spouse to reside in your residence for the duration of their life then subsequent to their death the property may then pass to your children.

Dying without a valid Will in place deems that you died intestate, and your assets will be distributed in accordance with a government formula and may not end up with the people who you would like to receive them. Your spouse would be entitled to a share of your assets, however this may not have been your intention, or the share that they would receive may be significantly more than you would like them to receive.

It is therefore crucial that you take the time to put a well drafted Will in place so that your assets pass to those who you would like to receive them upon your death.

Mutual Wills Agreement

A Mutual Wills Agreement is a separate document to your Will and essentially is an agreement between you and your spouse that both of you will not change your Will without the consent of the your spouse or their legal personal representative upon their death.

This document is intended to prevent the remaining spouse from altering their Will and disinheriting step-children or making other adverse changes to their Will.

The Right People in Key Roles

The roles of executor of your Will and your attorney in respect to your Power of Attorney documents are important roles and it is paramount that you appoint trusted people to undertake these roles as essentially you are handing control of your assets to those who assume these roles.

Your attorney is entrusted to look after your finances and provide the best care for you in the event that you become incapacitated so you need to choose wisely.

Communication is Crucial

It is important that there is transparency for you and your family. By having important conversations with your spouse and children you can openly discuss your intentions and expectations so that all parties are relevantly informed and fully understand what your wishes are and what you have put in place.

In order to evaluate the best options for you it is important that you obtain the appropriate professional advice to determine which is the best strategy for your own individual circumstances so that the relevant documents are put in place which offer you the best asset protection possible.

Melisa Sloan is principal of Madison Sloan Lawyers and author of Big Moments: Expert Advice for Conquering those moments that define us. www.melisasloan.com.au

She knows the importance of expressing feelings as well. I wasn’t raised like this at all so our girls are very lucky to be learning from you, baby. I’m learning too.”

Image credits: Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency/Shutterstock Editorial

I had to open the magazine to discover why I’m standing by Petey – let me tell you why.”

She continued to joke about the “flattering photo” that the tabloid used, where she describes herself as “suitably puffy underneath the eyes”, saying pointedly, “I’m looking like I am in crisis."

She then shows a photo of the full cover story, titled: Pete and Jess: This Won’t Break Us.

“What is going to break us?” Rowe posed. “It turns out, there’s this article all about possible changes to the news that really aren’t based on anything, just some anonymous quotes.”

At the video’s conclusion, she read the final quote provided in the “nonsensical article”.

“‘But whatever happens they’ll come through it all stronger than ever – that’s just the way they are’,” Rowe quoted. “Oh phew, I was reassured reading that standing at the supermarket line that Petey and I, we’re going to come through it. We’re not in crisis.”

The video racked up thousands of likes and comments, with fans of Rowe also condemning the gossip tabloid.

“Sometimes you need a magazine to tell you how you’re feeling,” one commenter quipped.

“It’s like work gossip,” another said. “I generally need to ask people what is going on in my life that I don’t know is happening.”

We moved in together aged 18 and started our lives as a couple,” he added.

Jess and Matt married in 2001 and moved to London a year later, after Matt was based in England for his athletics training.

Their family grew in 2006 when they welcomed their first child Sienna, before deciding to return to Australia in 2008.

The couple had a second daughter, Winter, soon after, and went on to have a son, Lincoln, who is six.

Shirvo shared how much he loves raising daughters and getting to see their sense of independence grow.

“They’re great young women, strong and powerful, and I love seeing their desire for independence,” Shirvo said.

“Sienna is extremely artistic and Winnie is ambitious about sport – she just competed in the under-17s National Rowing Championships."

“It doesn’t matter what it is, if your kids have a passion for something and love waking up in the morning to do it, you’ll back it to the end of the earth as a parent.”

On Monday morning's episode of Sunrise, Nat Barr praised the article and Shirvo for his heartwarming words about his family.

“Interesting article in the paper over the weekend about our very own Shirvo — who got candid about life, love, and family,” Barr said, referring to the piece.

“I wanted to give you a shout-out — it was really lovely, I loved reading it.”

“My favourite part was when you said, ‘I never had a celebrity crush growing up, but I did marry my first crush’ It was a really gorgeous story,” Barr said of the piece.

Edwina Bartholomew reveals the truth behind her unconventional marriage

Edwina Bartholomew has shared why she doesn't live with her husband full time, and why the unconventional arrangement works for their family.

The Sunrise star first spoke about her unusual situation with husband Neil Varcoe in 2023, when she admitted the married couple no longer slept in the same room.

Now, speaking candidly to Now to Love, Bartholomew has share more insight into their marriage arrangement and how it first began.

“Strangely, it works,” Edwina said.

“We were never ‘date night’ people, but now we’re apart, we go to that extra effort when we’re together to go out for dinner, lunch or to a movie.”

The Sunrise presenter went on to share that the reason Neil first moved out of the city was so he could recover from chronic fatigue syndrome, which he’s been battling for six years.

Neil now lives in the Central West of NSW, three hours from where Edwina lives in Sydney.

“I think he’s the best he’s been for a number of years just by virtue of having that space to recover – eating healthily, exercising, having a really regimented routine,” she said.

“He’s actually really good, which is fantastic, because for a while he definitely wasn’t and it was challenging for both of us. As a wife, it’s hard to see your husband go through that, and hard for him to miss out on things because he can’t physically be there.”

Unsure how long the arrangement will last, Edwina hasn't ruled out moving to the country in the future to be with her husband.

"I think I'd miss the adrenaline of all the back-and-forth, and the excitement,” she admitted. “But sure, one day, it would be lovely to be able to have a family life that’s based in the country – in the distant future.”

Driver fined over "six-second stop"

A driver has been fined $387 for making "six-second stop" at what he thought was a 15-minute parking zone, and now he is fuming as he believes he is a victim of a cash grab.

Sydney resident Michael was dropping off his partner in a quiet street on Darling Harbour and was shocked to receive a hefty fine and two demerit points for his quick drop-off.

Revenue NSW reportedly told him that he had stopped within 10 metres after a crossing, which was a "serious" safety risk.

Michael said that he was unaware he needed to pull in and believed he was allowed to stop where he did, as he was adjacent to the parking bay.

"It's a flawed set up with the crossing being so close to the 15-minute parking," Michael told Yahoo News Australia.

"If I was a metre over in the vacant bay I would have avoided the fine. But the signage is just not clear.. and that bay itself is within 10 metres of the crossing, so how does that work?"

The photos supplied by Revenue NSW, all time-stamped 8:23am, showed Michael's vehicle in different positions of the Zollner Circuit, which he has argued is not sufficient evidence to prove that he stopped.

The photos also showed no visible pedestrians, other than Michael's partner who had just gotten out of the car, and Michael argued that he was allowed to stop since there was the 15-minute parking sign.

While Darling Harbour is located in the City of Sydney LGA, the area is managed by government-run Place Management NSW.

"It is an offence to stop on or near a pedestrian crossing," a spokesperson stressed.

Michael questioned why there was no leniency, with such a large fine particularly amid a cost-of-living crisis, but it is reportedly because those who clearly breach road laws would not be granted any.

"There's no one around and I was there for six seconds... it just feels like someone was having a bad day and waiting to make a name for themselves," Michael argued.

Images: Yahoo News Australia.

Second “royal racist” accidentally named in new book

A second member of the royal family has been accused of being "racist", after the bombshell royal exposé implied them in the scandal over baby Archie's skin colour.

In Omid Scobie's new book Endgame, he discusses the comments that members of the royal family made to Meghan Markle when she was pregnant with baby Archie.

Markle first shared the bombshell allegations in her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, but she refused to name the royal family member who made the comments, saying, “I think that would be very damaging to them.”

On Wednesday, reports emerged that copies of the book were being pulled from shelves as the Dutch translation of the book accidentally named the person involved in the scandal.

Omid Scobie admitted he does know who made the comments, but UK libel laws prevented him from naming them in the book.

Now, as copies of the tell-all book have been flying off shelves, it seems another member of the royal family has been implicated in the book, which is now said to be frantically being pulled from shelves.

It comes after Mr Scobie denied responsibility for the Dutch translation of his new book “accidentally naming” a member of the Royal Family.

Publishers Xander Uitgevers yesterday said they were seeking to remove Mr Scobie’s work from bookshelves saying there had been an “error”.

Speaking to Dutch TV on Wednesday night, Mr Scobie defended his book, saying, “The book is in several languages, and unfortunately I do not speak Dutch”.

“But if there are translation errors, I’m sure the publishers will have it under control."

“I wrote and edited the English version. There’s never been no version that I’ve produced that has names in it.”

In the English version, Mr Scobie writes, “In the pages of these private letters [given to Oprah by Markle], two identities were revealed. UK laws prevent me from reporting who they were”.

But the Dutch version reads, “In those private letters, an identity was revealed and confirmed” — before going on to name a senior royal.

Dutch royal reporter Rick Evers says he was one of only two journalists to be given a manuscript of Endgame last Wednesday.

Mr Evers said, “I was shocked that no one else in the world mentioned the fact that a member of the royals was named in the book as the racist”.

“That was the main accusation in the book that I noticed and what I put in my (review) article, which was published with a photo of that royal."

“I began to question if it was only my manuscript that had the name in it. I went to get the book from a store and it was exactly the same,” Mr Evers said.

“A woman called from the publisher saying there was a legal problem and my article had to be removed.”

It is unclear how the error occurred, but Mr Scobie confirmed that the first royal family member named in the book is not the one stated in the letters from Meghan Markle.

Michael Caine shares his secrets to a long life

Michael Caine has shared his top three tips for living a long, happy and healthy life.

While promoting his new movie The Great Escaper, the 90-year-old Hollywood legend credited his nine decades of life to three things.

He told the Daily Mail, "Younger wives, no snacking and wear trainers at all times."

Caine then quickly added, "And you have to be careful not to fall down."

"Happens all the time. You have to just get up and carry on."

Elsewhere in the candid interview, Caine explained how much the business of movie making has changed since his big break, discussing the relatively new phenomenon of having intimacy coordinators on set for love scenes.

Asked about the coordinators, that are not found on most film and TV sets, Caine responded, “Really? Seriously? What are they? We never had that in my day.

“Thank god I’m 90 and don’t play lovers anymore is all I can say. In my day you just did the love scene and got on with it without anyone interfering. It’s all changed.”

Caine shared that his love of movies came after he served in the army, which he believes every able man should do to serve their country.

The actor completed national service in the military himself, serving in Iserlohn, West Germany in the aftermath of World War II and seeing action in Korea.

“I think every young man should be made to do it,” he said. “It truly makes a man of you.”

He added: “I only became an actor after I left the army. I did rep for nine years then got a movie and was like, ‘f*** this! I love films more.’ I liked the money and all.”

Qantas chief executive issues second apology

Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson has issued a second apology, as the airline continues to try and fix its reputation and win back customers' trust amid recent controversy over its unlawful mass firing.

In a video message released on Friday, Hudson, who replaced chief executive Alan Joyce earlier this month, said she understood customer’s frustration and apologised for the airline’s recent track record.

“I know that we have let you down in many ways and for that, I am sorry,” she said.

“We haven't delivered the way we should have. And we’ve often been hard to deal with.”

This apology comes just weeks after the new chief executive apologised to their staff and said that the new management will be more focused on their customers.

Hudson has also promised to rectify the airline's problems.

“We understand we need to earn back your trust not with what we say, but with what we do and how we behave,” she said.

She added that customers can expect more frequent flyer seats, improved resources for call centres, and a review of customer policies, assuring customers that their frontline teams will be granted more flexibility “to better help you when things don't go to plan”.

“This has been a humbling period,” she said.

Images: Qantas/ news.com.au

Hugh Jackman "devastated" after marriage split

Hugh Jackman has publicly addressed his recent separation for the first time since the news surfaced on Friday September 15. Photographed while running errands in the streets of New York, Jackman's ring finger conspicuously lacked a wedding ring. When approached by a photographer about the breakup, he declined to delve into details, simply stating, "It doesn't feel quite right talking about it on the street."

The 54-year-old actor did, however, acknowledge the challenging situation with a brief remark, saying, "It's a difficult time," before courteously smiling at the photographer and resuming his errands.

His appearance comes in the wake of reports indicating that he was profoundly affected by his split from his wife of 27 years, Deborra-lee Furness. However, some sources suggest that the separation had been a long time coming.

The New York Post's Page Six section cited a source close to Jackman who said that he is “devastated” by the split and that he is “very sad".

An insider from Broadway, where Jackman returned for "The Music Man" in February 2022, revealed that the breakup wasn't a recent development, sharing, "It happened a while ago. Friends and family knew about it."

They added that there was no involvement of a third party and that the couple had gradually evolved into more like "roommates"

The announcement of their separation came as a shock to their worldwide fanbase. The couple shared their decision to part ways through a statement released via People magazine, expressing their gratitude for nearly three decades of marriage and explaining their choice to separate in pursuit of individual growth. The statement concluded by requesting privacy during this transitional phase in their lives.

“We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage,” the statement read. “Our journey now is shifting, and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”

Jackman and Furness then added that “our family has been and always will be our highest priority” as “we undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love and kindness”.

“We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives,” the statement continued before they signed off as “Deb and Hugh Jackman”.

“This is the sole statement either of us will make,” the pair concluded.

Jackman and Furness first crossed paths while working together on the Australian miniseries Correlli in 1995. Jackman, who had previously described their connection as love at first sight, knew he wanted to marry Furness just weeks after meeting her. They tied the knot on April 11, 1996.

Their journey together included overcoming miscarriages and embarking on an IVF journey before deciding to adopt. In 2000, they welcomed their son, Oscar, into their family, followed by the adoption of their daughter, Ava, five years later.

Jackman had often openly expressed his deep affection for Furness throughout their marriage. Shortly before the news of their separation emerged, he shared a heartfelt message on Instagram celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary, professing his enduring love and admiration for his wife.

In a recent development, Furness was spotted without her wedding ring just days before the news of their separation became public.

Images: Instagram
