Guy Sebastian's surprising new career move

Guy Sebastian has announced his surprising new career move, just weeks after revealing he would be leaving his long-held judges role on The Voice Australia.

After spending six seasons on the singing program, Sebastian is set to make a carer pivot into films, as he will make his big-screen debut later this year.

Sebastian will appear in Hindi Vindi: an Australian indie film about a teen musician named Kabir, portrayed by Mihir Ahuja, who is trying to bridge a family generation gap through song.

The Australian Idol winner was originally approached to just write an original song for the movie, before producers to ask him to take on the acting role of James, the father of the teenage singer.

On Thursday, Sebastian was asked on Sunrise about the best part of working on the new film.

“Working with great actors — in the film there is Nina Gunter, who has been in 180 Bollywood movies, and the actor who plays my son in the film as well — absorbing the craft,” Sebastian said

“I am comfortable in the music world. I can sit in my studio knowing I have done my 10,000 hours but having actor friends and seeing how seriously they take the craft, I knew I was venturing into a world that I needed to pull something out from somewhere."

“It is not the hat that I wear all the time. That was good, watching them and absorbing them in being able to turn on a dime and the emotion and that is the biggest thing I took away, how much is involved in bringing a character to life.”

Sebastian spoke candidly about delving into his own ancestral roots for the role, tapping into his Malaysian and Sri Lankan Tamil heritage.

“I moved to Australia when I was six years old or something,” he said.

“There is a lot in this movie that I could draw on personally, my mum is from India and she had a pretty tough life. She was orphaned fairly young. Her story parallels that of my wife in the film."

“My character gets married and takes her away from her family and that is kind of what happened to my mum. At 19 she moved away from her family, so there is a lot to tap into."

“The accent, it actually came naturally because I generally soften my accent. When I am around my older aunties, you can’t be very Australian because they don’t know what you’re saying.”

When asked if Sebastian thought acting would be a new career path for him, he responded, “I don’t know.”

“Originally, I was just writing the music — I would be the singing voice of the character of my son — and it changed into me writing some songs for the film and then weirdly they saw a film clip where I played this ’70s porn star detective."

“They saw that, and they were like ... ‘You are quite natural on camera, can you try out for the role?’ And now I am in it.”

Sebastian has also written an original song, titled Made of Heart, for the film.

Driver reveals "surprising" way he got out of $410 seatbelt fine

An Aussie driver who copped a $410 fine and three demerit points after their passenger made a common seatbelt move has revealed how they argued his way out of the ticket.

Numerous motorists have been fined in recent weeks over the little-known road rule, where the driver could be penalised if a passenger reclines their seat too far back.

Aussie lawyer Hayder Shkara argued that the rule is "step too far" as well-rested passengers can help curb the growing rate of fatalities by taking over from fatigued drivers on long car trips.

Shkara shared the story of how one of his followers had successfully overturned the seatbelt fine and demerit points on social media.

"He applied for a review with the police, and he actually got approved," Shkara said.

"In his review he focused on the fact that car manufacturers were allowed to import these vehicles with the ability to recline in the first place, and that if there was an actual issue with the vehicle in terms of its design, it should have been stopped at the importation basis.

"[He] said to the police that they were practicing safe driving protocols by changing drivers and making sure that one driver was rested and at police actually withdrew the fine. He didn't have to pay anything, and he didn't get any demerit points."

Shkara told Yahoo that "normally applications for review in traffic offences are extremely difficult to be successful in and there is a low margin of success."

"What is the purpose of seat belts? It is for driver and passenger safety. But we all know that fatigue is a big problem for drivers, so if drivers are switching in and out, I believe that the safer thing to do is for one driver to have proper rest so they can continue to drive safely."

He said he would also encourage others who receive a fine for the same offence to try and appeal their case, as the "review doesn't require you to pay any legal fees and it is worth a shot."

Image: NSW Centre for Road Safety/ TikTok

You can train your nose – and 4 other surprising facts about your sense of smell

Lynn Nazareth, CSIRO

Would you give up your sense of smell to keep your hair? What about your phone?

A 2022 US study compared smell to other senses (sight and hearing) and personally prized commodities (including money, a pet or hair) to see what people valued more.

The researchers found smell was viewed as much less important than sight and hearing, and valued less than many commodities. For example, half the women surveyed said they’d choose to keep their hair over sense of smell.

Smell often goes under the radar as one of the least valued senses. But it is one of the first sensory systems vertebrates developed and is linked to your mental health, memory and more.

Here are five fascinating facts about your olfactory system.

1. Smell is linked to memory and emotion

Why can the waft of fresh baking trigger joyful childhood memories? And why might a certain perfume jolt you back to a painful breakup?

Smell is directly linked to both your memory and emotions. This connection was first established by American psychologist Donald Laird in 1935 (although French novelist Marcel Proust had already made it famous in his reverie about the scent of madeleines baking.)

Odours are first captured by special olfactory nerve cells inside your nose. These cells extend upwards from the roof of your nose towards the smell-processing centre of your brain, called the olfactory bulb.

Smells are first detected by nerve cells in the nose. Axel_Kock/Shutterstock

From the olfactory bulb they form direct connection with the brain’s limbic system. This includes the amygdala, where emotions are generated, and the hippocampus, where memories are created.

Other senses – such as sight and hearing – aren’t directly connected to the lymbic system.

One 2004 study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to demonstrate odours trigger a much stronger emotional and memory response in the brain than a visual cue.

2. Your sense of smell constantly regenerates

You can lose your ability to smell due to injury or infection – for example during and after a COVID infection. This is known as olfactory dysfunction. In most cases it’s temporary, returning to normal within a few weeks.

This is because every few months your olfactory nerve cells die and are replaced by new cells.

We’re not entirely sure how this occurs, but it likely involves your nose’s stem cells, the olfactory bulb and other cells in the olfactory nerves.

Other areas of your nervous system – including your brain and spinal cord – cannot regenerate and repair after an injury.

Constant regeneration may be a protective mechanism, as the olfactory nerves are vulnerable to damage caused by the external environment, including toxins (such as cigarette smoke), chemicals and pathogens (such as the flu virus).

But following a COVID infection some people might continue to experience a loss of smell. Studies suggest the virus and a long-term immune response damages the cells that allow the olfactory system to regenerate.

3. Smell is linked to mental health

Around 5% of the global population suffer from anosmia – total loss of smell. An estimated 15-20% suffer partial loss, known as hyposmia.

Given smell loss is often a primary and long-term symptom of COVID, these numbers are likely to be higher since the pandemic.

Yet in Australia, the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction remains surprisingly understudied.

Losing your sense of smell is shown to impact your personal and social relationships. For example, it can mean you miss out on shared eating experiences, or cause changes in sexual desire and behaviour.

In older people, declining ability to smell is associated with a higher risk of depression and even death, although we still don’t know why.

4. Loss of smell can help identify neurodegenerative diseases

Partial or full loss of smell is often an early indicator for a range of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Patients frequently report losing their sense of smell years before any symptoms show in body or brain function. However many people are not aware they are losing their sense of smell.

There are ways you can determine if you have smell loss and to what extent. You may be able to visit a formal smell testing centre or do a self-test at home, which assesses your ability to identify household items like coffee, wine or soap.

5. You can train your nose back into smelling

“Smell training” is emerging as a promising experimental treatment option for olfactory dysfunction. For people experiencing smell loss after COVID, it’s been show to improve the ability to detect and differentiate odours.

Smell training (or “olfactory training”) was first tested in 2009 in a German psychology study. It involves sniffing robust odours — such as floral, citrus, aromatic or fruity scents — at least twice a day for 10—20 seconds at a time, usually over a 3—6 month period.

Participants are asked to focus on the memory of the smell while sniffing and recall information about the odour and its intensity. This is believed to help reorganise the nerve connections in the brain, although the exact mechanism behind it is unclear.

Some studies recommend using a single set of scents, while others recommend switching to a new set of odours after a certain amount of time. However both methods show significant improvement in smelling.

This training has also been shown to alleviate depressive symptoms and improve cognitive decline both in older adults and those suffering from dementia.

Just like physiotherapy after a physical injury, olfactory training is thought to act like rehabilitation for your sense of smell. It retrains the nerves in your nose and the connections it forms within the brain, allowing you to correctly detect, process and interpret odours.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Surprising cost of King Charles' Aussie dinner item

While royal fans have expressed their excitement over King Charles and Queen Camilla's trip to Australia, others weren't as happy with how much taxpayer money is being splashed out on the visit.

The royals touched down in Sydney on Friday, and with members of the public questioning the cost of the monarch's visit, the cost of the wine selection for their dinner with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Jodie Haydon on Monday have been revealed - and it's surprisingly affordable.

All five wines on the menu were under $40.

The royal selection included:

Josef Chromy Sparkling NV (RRP $32.99)

Hentley Farm Eden Valley Riesling (RRP $28)

Hentley Farm Barossa Shiraz (RRP $36.50)

Castelli Silver Series Chardonnay (RRP $25)

Cape Mentelle Marmaduke Cabernet Sauvignon (RRP $21.99)

David Moulton, Chief Winemaker at Margaret River winery Cape Mentelle, told Yahoo Lifestyle that it was "really exciting" to have their wine on the list.

“We received a picture message of the menu, and it worked its way across the entire business - it brought such a positive energy to the team,” he told the publication.

“The door is always open to the King next time he wants to venture out of NSW and visit us here in Margaret River, so long as the door is open to Cape Mentelle to serve our wines in the palace!”

However, the beer selection at the Federal government’s Parliamentary Reception was slammed online, with the selections being: Great Northern, Great Northern zero alcohol, and Furphy.

“Good to see a couple of WA wineries in the wine selection. But those beer selections are horrendous,” one said.

Another quipped: “LOL Great Northern… may as well gone all out and had VB and Carlton Draft."

“As well as crap beer, the wine list is very much on the budget side. Probably not a bad thing seeing how much they cost the taxpayer usually,” another added.

Images: X/ Instagram

The surprising unknown road rule that is costing drivers

A woman has issued a warning to Aussie drivers after being threatened with a hefty fine for a common car decoration.

Janelle McEvoy, a young woman from Perth, took to TikTok to recall the moment she learned that she could be facing a fine for having an air freshener hanging from her car’s rear view mirror.

“I randomly got breath tested on the way to an event this morning and the police officer told me when I get home I need to remove this hanging from my car to avoid the $100 fine and the demerit point,” she said in her TikTok video, which has since had nearly 2 million views.

“Doesn’t everyone have one of these hanging from their car? Where is it supposed to go?”

Thousands of people flocked to the comments on the video to share their surprise over the obscure road rule, with one person writing, “The way my jaw dropped when you showed what it was cause I bought the exact same thing not too long ago.”

Another added, “That’s crazy, I have like four air fresheners and two crystal chains hanging from my car.”

The rule, which varies between states, can carry fines and possibly the loss of demerit points, if a police officer deems that the driver’s vision is obstructed from whatever is hanging from the mirror.

In NSW, drivers without a clear view of the road can be fined $410 fine and have three demerit points issued.

In other Aussie states, the fine for obstructed vision can range between $100 and $361.

Edwina Bartholomew's surprise return after cancer news

In a heartwarming moment, beloved Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew made her much-anticipated return to the breakfast show after sharing her cancer diagnosis live on air earlier this month.

On Friday, Bartholomew joined the team live from Melbourne as Sunrise geared up for the AFL Grand Final between the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions. Radiating positivity, she shared her excitement at being back on the show.

"I’m so well rested," she beamed. "I’ve had a huge, gigantic warm embrace from Sunrise viewers, and I didn’t want to miss today."

Bartholomew’s love for the AFL Grand Final and her Sunrise family brought her back to the desk, with her characteristic humour intact. “I wanted to be back in time, not just for the mini jaffles, but to see you all and be here for the wonderful week in Melbourne,” she quipped.

Hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington welcomed her back with open arms. “Good to have you back,” Barr said warmly, while Shirvington added, “Great to be back.”

In early September, Bartholomew tearfully revealed to viewers that she had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia after a routine blood test. Despite the diagnosis, her positive outlook has been inspiring. "It's a good kind of cancer, it can be treated with a daily tablet. If I take care of myself, I will be completely fine," she reassured viewers.

Bartholomew has been spending time with her family, including husband Neil Varcoe and their two young children, Molly, 4, and Tom, 2. While she plans to ease back into work, she’s expected to appear only a few days a week.

Her return brought a wave of support from viewers, who had sent well-wishes throughout her time off. Bartholomew expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love. “I feel very lucky,” she said. "Many of you have been in similar situations or much, much worse, and come out the other side stronger."

In her classy and heartfelt follow-up message online, she spoke about the importance of putting health first, especially for mothers who often put their own well-being last. "Please take care of yourself too, and just check in with your doctor."

With her return, Bartholomew brings back not just her signature charm, but also a reminder of optimism and the importance of self-care. Sunrise viewers are no doubt thrilled to see her smiling face once again, and the show is all the brighter for it.

Images: Sunrise

Sonia Kruger in talks for surprise reboot

Sonia Kruger may soon take on a new role, with an insider telling Yahoo Lifestyle that Channel 10 is considering her for a reboot of The Golden Bachelor.

TV Blackbox reported that Channel Nine would be announcing The Golden Bachelor at its annual Upfronts event in October, and now it is reported that the network has eyes on Kruger to host the series.

"The word on the street is that Sonia could reboot The Golden Bachelor on Channel Nine in 2025," the source told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“Channel Nine loved working with Sonia and everyone would welcome her back with open arms. There is a real bidding war which will see two networks keen to lock her services down in the new year.”

Earlier this year, Channel 10 announced that they have cancelled The Bachelor, following 11 seasons, so news of a reboot on Nine could be just the thing for reality TV fans.

"The Bachelor is going to look very different to how Network 10 has been making the show," the insider told Yahoo Lifestyle.

They added that Nine wanted the show to look more "lux" and that executives are interested in the "class" Kruger would bring to the series.

"The ambition is to appeal to a wider audience and make it a yearly feature on the network. There is no reason it won't be as big as MAFS in a couple of years."

“The Channel Seven star is yet to hear what the lineup for 2025 will look like if she stays with the network but with Big Brother cancelled there is a hole in her contract that will need to be fixed if she is to be picked up again," they said.

Kruger previously left Channel Seven to take on rival network Channel Nine's reboot of Big Brother Australia in 2011, a move which was considered a "huge risk" at the time.

Image: Seven

Pauline Hanson's surprising act of kindness for struggling family

Pauline Hanson has revealed a surprising act of kindness for a struggling Queensland family, who have been battling the private healthcare system.

Nine year old Kadee Byrnes, from Yeppoon, about 740km north of Brisbane, has been on the public hospital waiting list for seven years waiting for the adenoid surgery she desperately needs.

The surgery is a procedure to remove the adenoids, small tissue lumps in the nasal cavity, to address her chronic tonsillitis.

While on the waitlist, Kadee had to repeat the fourth grade after missing so much school due to reoccurring infections.

After hearing of Kadee's plight, the One Nation senator said she was "disgusted" the young girl had to wait so long for surgery and promised to cover the cost of her private treatment.

Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson has promised to cover the surgery costs for a nine year old Yeppoon girl, who has been on the public hospital waiting list for more than seven years. https://t.co/WbYeQT6ZHu @CPenny_6 #7NEWS pic.twitter.com/AdToZNR6Ii

— 7NEWS Central Queensland (@7NewsCQ) July 29, 2024

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to help 9-year-old Kadee by covering the cost of her private treatment," Ms Hanson said on Tuesday.

"It is unacceptable that young Kadee was told she would have to repeat Grade 4 due to missing so many school days because of tonsillitis."

"Situations like this are sadly all too common and highlight the severe consequences of the Labor government's lack of investment in our public hospitals, especially outside South East Queensland."

Senator Hanson broke the happy news to Kadee's mother, Kahlia, at a speaking event in Roslyn Bay.

"Straight away, I said we're going to get this operation done. Kahlia you don't know, I'm paying for it, all right, I'm going to pay for it," Senator Hanson said.

Kahlia said she was grateful for Senator Hanson's generosity and to see her daughter finally have a normal life.

"I am very that it's going to end this way," Kahlia said. "She is finally going to have a surgery and she is finally going to be able to live a life as a normal nine year old."

Dr Charlie Teo's surprising next move after Aussie surgery restrictions

One year after being slapped with restrictions that effectively stopped him from operating in Australia, Dr Charlie Teo is restarting his career overseas.

The neurosurgeon was investigated by Australia’s Health Care Complaints Commission, who last year placed restrictions on the surgeon after they discovered he had been operating on tumours that had been deemed "inoperable".

Now, one of China’s most respected neurosurgeons has thanked Australia for imposing such restrictions because it has allowed her country to benefit from the controversial surgeon’s ability to remove high-risk brain tumours.

Dr Teo has been operating regularly in China including on high profile VIPs, and at least eight other countries around the world, according to reports from the Sunday Telegraph.

An investigation has found Dr Teo has operated on 150 patients, with many of them being from Australia, in China, Spain, Germany, India, Switzerland, Brazil, Peru, South Africa, and Nepal since the restrictions effectively stopped him from operating in Australia.

In an interview from Beijing, Professor Ling Feng, Deputy Director of the China International Neuroscience Institute, said she is “not worried” about the restrictions imposed on Dr Teo a year ago for unsatisfactory conduct.

“I took a careful look into what happened over there. I don’t think it should be imputed to Charlie’s neglect of care and passion for the patients,” Professor Ling told the Sunday Telegraph.

“It is just a different view of the indications for surgery. Similar cases occur across the world. Instead, I ‘thank’ Australia for the restrictions on Charlie, which gave me the opportunity to work with him.”

In the past year, patients have travelled from Australia, Romania, Britain, Saudi Arabia, France, Indonesia, and Singapore to have Dr Teo operate.

Of those surgeries Dr Teo’s logbook documents one death, one “poor” outcome, three “fair outcomes”, 20 “good outcomes” and 145 cases have been documented as “excellent”.

Dr Teo says his results are better than ever and he feels terrible for patients in his own country that he can’t help, but hopes that he may one day be able to return to Australian operating rooms to help patients.

“All it would take is one sensible and brave person in one hospital somewhere in Australia to change the status quo,” Dr Teo said.

“Just one person to sit back and go ‘okay he might be an a**hole, he might be into money, he might be a bit of a cowboy, he might be all the things the media have said he might be, but the fact is that patients, Australian patients, some need him and he does operations that other people don’t do and most of those outcomes are good so what about we just drop the politics and allow him to operate in Australia?"

“That’s all it would take … some common sense for the greater good, not for his sake but for the sake of patients.”

That's reason enough to be proud on its own!"

Another added, "What a special moment. I hope they all got to spend a little time together after her watch. She is a great Guard and her parents should be proud of her and what she does."

Another simply said, "How proud a parent to see your daughter standing post as a Kings Guard."
