Whoopi Goldberg reveals birth name

Whoopi Goldberg has surprised The View audiences by revealing her birth name.

On Monday’s episode of the US daytime talk show, the co-hosts debated the necessity of a new platform that can tell house hunters in the US the political affiliations of their potential neighbours.

While they were discussing the topic, Whoopi casually dropped her real birth name, with viewers wondering if they'd heard her correctly.

Whoopi made it clear that she was against the start-up, saying: “That is not a good idea because number one, it’s none of your business, and number two, it just fosters more division."

Co-host Sunny Hostin said: “I have a multiracial family, my goddaughter is gay, some of my best friends are trans. I wouldn’t want to live next to an extremist that would make my family feel unwelcome.”

She then clarified, “But I don’t think that’s a political affiliation thing. I think it’s a behavioural thing.”

Goldberg added that there's been a shift in recent years with more people openly talking about their political affiliations.

“I was raised, you never asked anybody how they were voting. I would say, ‘Ma, who are you going to vote for?’ and she’d just give me that look. And she’d say to me, ‘Caryn, that’s nobody’s business,’” she recalled.

Whoopi’s birth name is actually Caryn - pronounced ‘Karen'.

When asked why she changed it, Goldberg replied in an old interview: “Here’s the thing. When you’re performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door. So if you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go.

“So people used to say to me, ‘You are like a whoopee cushion.’ And that’s where the name came from.”

Image: The View

Samantha Armytage has made a stunning return to breakfast television.

The beloved journalist made her debut as co-host of the Today show on Monday morning alongside Weekend Today weather presenter Dan Anstey.

The pair took over the reins from Weekend Today hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys who were filling in for Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo.

This is the first time Armytage has appeared on morning TV, since she last co-hosted Seven’s rival breakfast show Sunrise with David Koch from 2013 to 2021.

“I’ve remembered where I am, on channel Nine. Isn’t it lovely to be on channel Nine?” she asked, addressing the elephant in the room, before saying, "Hi guys, good morning, it's nice to be here and nice to look at this new team."

“Well, we met at Melbourne Cup, didn’t we? You were handsome as always,” she told co-host Anstey, who jokingly replied: "I can't remember that now."

"You may have confused me with another Dan."

Armytage, who started her TV career on Nine, was recently welcomed back as host of the new dating program, The Golden Bachelor, which will premiere next year.

Her appearance on the breakfast TV show comes after a dramatic development in her personal life, following news of her split from husband Richard Lavender after four years together.

Images: Today

Erin Molan speaks out after abrupt axing

Erin Molan has broken her silence after her show on Sky News Australia was abruptly cancelled, just two months after her 2GB radio show was also axed.

Molan presented her final current affairs show on Sky News on Friday, before taking to Instagram to discuss her departure with her dedicated followers.

In a video posted to social media, Erin said, "Well, first of all, hi. Wow, what a few days, I'm so grateful to everyone who has reached out and shared messages of support. You are all absolutely phenomenal. It's meant so so much to me, so thank you, my mind is seriously blown."

She continued, "You've seen the news by now, clearly, that I finished up with Sky. I loved every second of my time with Sky, my show there became my purpose, my passion, and aside from my little girl, basically my entire existence, which is very sad, I know. And yes, I need to get out more."

Erin then shared that while she is "done" with Sky now, she is "just getting started".

"So, I'm sorry to those who had hoped otherwise," she said, jokingly adding, "I'm somewhat surprisingly much harder to kill off than you think."

She added that her problem is that she cares "too much" about people, and "about the world, about a peaceful existence for every single child, about the safety of women everywhere".

Erin revealed she's received job offers from other networks, admitting it would be nice to have "fewer death threats, more stability, a simpler life", however, she feels compelled to use her platform to shed more light on issues she is passionate about, such as the ongoing war in Gaza.

"I won't ever accept what the world is dishing up right now, and nor should you," she said. "I will never bury my head in the sand, because that is not how I was raised."

She finished by telling her followers to "watch this space".

Erin's time at Sky News draws to a close just months after her radio show, co-hosted by Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee, was also pulled off the air after three years.

Ray Hadley chokes up during final radio show

Ray Hadley has become emotional during his last show on-air, farewelling his loyal 2GB audience for the last time.

Hadley was joined by fellow 2GB host Ben Fordham for his final show on Friday, with Fordham surprising Hadley with a tribute to his stellar career.

The tribute spanned Hadley’s entire career, from top sporting moments, interviews with Keith Urban, to his children speaking with him on air.

“Ray Hadley, this is your life,” Fordham said before it played.

However, Hadley became emotional when a snippet of his mother’s voice was played during the segment.

“Very emotional. I had heard my mother’s voice previously,” Hadley told listeners, choked up. “I wasn’t gonna get upset. You’ve done this to me you little bludger.”

Earlier this week, Hadley spoke with 9Honey about his retirement, reflecting on his 43-year career.

Hadley admitted he worked brutal hours during his illustrious career, with his dedication leading to what became one of the most impressive runs in radio history in Australia.

"I've fought hard for every position I've got and a couple were thrust upon me without fighting for them, but once I got them I realised that it was things I liked doing," he told 9Honey.

"So yeah, it's been an adventure."

"Like every adventure, there's highs and lows. The lows are about as low as you can get, the highs are about as high as you can get, and hopefully most of the time is in the middle somewhere."

Hadley said while he's "retiring from full-time radio work" he's "not retiring from life" and with his contract set to run with 2GB until 2026 he is considering his options.

"That doesn't mean I won't do something else. What that is, I don't know, because I'm still contracted here. And I'm still committed to this station in many respects ... I've been here for 24 years."

"So, you know, there's always a part of me that is willing this station and this network to do well," he said.

For now, he's planning to take a three-month break "to clear my head."

"I’m saying that hands down": Matt Shirvo's bold prediction

Matt Shirvington has made an enormous call about the future career of 16-year-old sprinter known as Gout Gout, saying he could be one of Australia's greatest athletes.

The Brisbane teenager shot to fame over the weekend after blitzing the 200m track record, completing the race in just 20.04 seconds.

The Sunrise host and former Olympic runner heaped praise on the lightning-fast teen, claiming “he will be the greatest athlete we have ever produced in this country”.

“This kid, just on the fact that he is such an amazing athlete, the most coveted record in (Australian) sprinting was Peter Norman’s 1968 200m record that he did in that iconic race, of course that Black Power race in Mexico City,” Shirvington began on Channel 7’s Sunrise.

“The fact he has come out as a 16-year-old — he is not 17 until the 29th of December — is a phenomenal thing."

“The other thing, he ran a windy 10.04 — that’s the fifth fastest in all conditions by an Australian. He will be the greatest athlete we have ever produced in this country. I’m saying that hands down.”

Shirvo's Sunrise co-hosts were taken aback by his claims, but his praise didn't stop there, as he even predicted he could be one of the greatest athletes in the world in years to come.

“A lot of people are comparing Gout to the GOAT, which is Usain Bolt, of course,” Shirvington said. “I think he’s got more to produce the goods."

“And I sat down with a British coach who has trained some of the best 400m runners in the world ever and he reckons over the 400 he could very well be the world record holder too.

“Who knows, 100, 200, 400 — he may make it happen. In terms of the 100, breaking the 10 second barrier, it will not only be a blip on his radar, he will do it 100 times and it won’t even be a barrier for him.”

“He’s so young, so talented, he has a great team around him, his coach Di Shepherd, his manager James Templeton, his parents are just beautiful people,” Shirvington continued. “He is one of 7 siblings, he’s got a great story. And heading into 2032, there is going to be a huge support for him. He has the world at his feet."

“He’s going to train with Noah Lyles in January — of course Noah Lyles the Olympic champion. He’s going to be brilliant. For me, greatness is destined for Gout Gout.”

From the bed sheets to the TV remote, a microbiologist reveals the shocking truth about dirt and germs in hotel rooms

Primrose Freestone, University of Leicester

For most of us, staying in a hotel room is either something of a necessity – think business travel – or something to look forward to as part of a holiday or wider excursion.

But what if I told you there’s a large chance your hotel room, despite how it might appear to the naked eye, isn’t that clean. And even if it’s an expensive room, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s any less dirty.

Indeed, whoever has stayed in your room prior to you will have deposited bacteria, fungi and viruses all over the furniture, carpets, curtains and surfaces. What remains of these germ deposits depends on how efficiently your room is cleaned by hotel staff. And let’s face it, what is considered clean by a hotel might be different to what you consider clean.

Typically, assessment of hotel room cleanliness is based on sight and smell observations –- not on the invisible microbiology of the space, which is where the infection risks reside. So let’s take a deep dive into the world of germs, bugs and viruses to find out what might be lurking where.

It starts at the lift

Before you even enter your room, think of the hotel lift buttons as germ hotspots. They are being pressed all the time by many different people, which can transfer microorganisms onto the button surface, as well back onto the presser’s fingers.

Communal door handles can be similar in terms of germ presence unless sanitised regularly. Wash your hands or use a hand sanitiser after using a handle before you next touch your face or eat or drink.

The most common infections people pick up from hotel rooms are tummy bugs – diarrhoea and vomiting – along with respiratory viruses, such as colds and pneumonia, as well as COVID-19, of course.

Toilets and bathrooms tend to be cleaned more thoroughly than the rest of a hotel room and are often the least bacteriologically colonised environments.

Though if the drinking glass in the bathroom is not disposable, wash it before use (body wash or shampoo are effective dishwashers), as you can never be sure if they’ve been cleaned properly. Bathroom door handles may also be colonised by pathogens from unwashed hands or dirty washcloths.

Beware the remote

The bed, sheets and pillows can also be home to some unwanted visitors. A 2020 study found that after a pre-symptomatic COVID-19 patient occupied a hotel room there was significant viral contamination of many surfaces, with levels being particularly high within the sheets, pillow case and quilt cover.

While sheets and pillowcases may be more likely to be changed between occupants, bedspreads may not, meaning these fabrics may become invisible reservoirs for pathogens – as much as a toilet seat. Though in some cases sheets aren’t always changed between guests, so it may be better to just bring your own.

Less thought about is what lives on the hotel room desk, bedside table, telephone, kettle, coffee machine, light switch or TV remote – as these surfaces aren’t always sanitised between occupancies.

Viruses such as the norovirus can live in an infectious form for days on hard surfaces, as can COVID-19 – and the typical time interval between room changeovers is often less than 12 hours.

Soft fabric furnishings such as cushions, chairs, curtains and blinds are also difficult to clean and may not be sanitised other than to remove stains between guests, so washing your hands after touching them might be a good idea.

Uninvited guests

If all those germs and dirty surfaces aren’t enough to contend with, there are also bedbugs to think about. These bloodsucking insects are experts at secreting themselves into narrow, small spaces, remaining dormant without feeding for months.

Small spaces include the cracks and crevices of luggage, mattresses and bedding. Bed bugs are widespread throughout Europe, Africa, the US and Asia – and are often found in hotels. And just because a room looks and smells clean, doesn’t mean there may not be bed bugs lurking.

Fortunately, bed bug bites are unlikely to give you a transmissible disease, but the bite areas can become inflamed and infected. For the detection of bedbugs, reddish skin bites and blood spots on sheets are signs of an active infestation (use an antiseptic cream on the bites).

Other signs can be found on your mattress, behind the headboard and inside drawers and the wardrobe: brown spots could be remains of faeces, bed bug skins are brownish-silvery looking and live bed bugs are brown coloured and typically one to seven millimetres in length.

Inform the hotel if you think there are bed bugs in your room. And to avoid taking them with you when you checkout, carefully clean your luggage and clothes before opening them at home.

As higher-status hotels tend to have more frequent room usage, a more expensive room at a five-star hotel does not necessarily mean greater cleanliness, as room cleaning costs reduce profit margins. So wherever you’re staying, take with you a pack of antiseptic wipes and use them on the hard surfaces in your hotel room.

Also, wash or sanitise your hands often – especially before you eat or drink anything. Gogglebox stars outraged after fan favourite family axed

Stars of Gogglebox have rallied around the Silbery family after they shared the news that they have been let go from the program.

Isabelle announced the shock news that she, her mum Kerry, and her daughter Ruby would not be back for the revamped version of Gogglebox Australia in 2025, sparking outrage from fellow castmates and fans alike.

Isabelle announced on Friday that the family would not be back after nine long years on the series, saying they were not "included" in its "new form", with Isabelle calling it the end of an era.

"It’s with a very heavy heart to announce that Mum, Ruby and I will not be returning to Gogglebox in 2025 🥺💔 Foxtel have decided not to renew our beloved show and although the show will continue on Channel 10, the three of us have not been included in its new form," she wrote.

Isabelle, her mum Kerry and her grandmother Emmie first appeared on the show in 2016, before Isabelle's daughter Ruby replaced Emmie as the great-grandmother's health deteriorated.

Isabelle continues, "9 years ago, I saw an opportunity to showcase real women’s voices across multi-generations. Baby Ruby filling in for Emmie in recent seasons made it feel full circle. It has been an absolute pleasure sharing our lounge rooms with you all and cannot thank you enough for the love and support. It might be the end of an era but it’s also an opportunity for new exciting beginnings…"

Former Gogglebox duo Yvie Jones and Angie Kent rallied around the Silbery family in the comments, with Yvie saying she didn't understand the decision at all, and Angie saying the family left "impossible" shoes to fill.

"This is sad and wrong. Just the comments on here show how loved you are. I’m so, so sorry. I don’t understand this at all," Yvie said.

"Well, you know what? It’s their loss because you three have been nothing but incredible and it’s going to be almost impossible to fill those shoes! I think they’ve dropped the ball here. But what do myself and thousands of other avid TV watchers know, huh 🤷‍♀," Angie added.

Gogglebox fans have also been left disappointed by the news, sending love to the family. "I'm so sad to read this. You guys are amazing. You’ll be missed," one person commented.

"Well, that just sucks. Have thoroughly enjoyed watching the three generations of your family on the show over the years," another said.

Pauline Hanson levels lawsuit at Lidia Thorpe and Today show

Pauline Hanson, leader of the One Nation party, has initiated defamation proceedings against Senator Lidia Thorpe and Channel Nine’s Today show after being described as “a convicted racist” during a live television interview.

Legal letters sent to both parties demand immediate apologies and retractions, claiming the statement is false and defamatory.

Hanson’s legal team, represented by barrister Sue Chrysanthou and solicitor Anthony Jeffries, has labelled the situation “highly irresponsible” and warned of further legal action if the demands are not met.

In the letter to Senator Thorpe, Hanson’s lawyers argue, “You alleged during that interview that Senator Hanson has been convicted of racism. That never occurred.” They insist no criminal conviction of that nature exists and called on Thorpe to issue a public correction.

The dispute arises in the wake of a Federal Court ruling earlier this month, where Hanson was found to have racially vilified Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi. The ruling stemmed from a 2022 social media post in which Hanson told Senator Faruqi to “pack your bags and p*ss off back to Pakistan”. Justice Angus Stewart described the tweet as an “angry personal attack” that conveyed “a strong form of racism”.

Hanson has appealed the court's decision, arguing that the statement did not target Faruqi’s race, religion or ethnicity and should not be classified as racist. Her legal team claims the tweet was directed solely at Senator Faruqi and was not reflective of broader discrimination. They further argue that the original judgment misinterpreted the context of the remarks.

In the same Today show interview, Senator Thorpe also described Australia as “a very racist, divided country”. Thorpe has not yet publicly addressed Hanson’s legal warning.

Hanson, whose supporters have donated nearly $700,000 to fund her legal efforts, appears ready for a protracted legal battle. Her legal filings challenge the broader interpretations of offensive speech and the legal thresholds for defamation and racial vilification.

Images: Today Show

I grew up here, and I look forward to having a good laugh with our listeners in this amazing city,” she said.

Her appointment comes after O’Neill’s tearful departure announcement last month. O’Neill, who has been a staple of Nova’s breakfast lineup for over a decade, revealed that turning 50 had prompted her to embrace new personal and professional opportunities.

“For a lot of the time, it has been more than just a job,” O’Neill shared emotionally. “When I’ve had really hard times, I’ve known that I can come in here, just be myself, and enjoy it.”

Reflecting on her decision, O’Neill explained, “I feel like I want to get back to the grassroots of sport and involve myself more in the wider community.”

Listeners can expect a fresh dynamic with Osborne at the mic, as she brings her comedic flair and Brisbane pride to the morning airwaves.

Images: Nova

Weekend Sunrise star’s emotional farewell

Matt Doran has announced he is leaving the team at Weekend Sunrise to focus on his family, and to pursue other career opportunities.

Doran made the announcement on-air on Sunday, describing his five years at the show, hosting alongside Monique Wright as "the best job in the world".

“Before we go today, a bit of breaking news from the Doran household. I want to share with you a decision I’ve made, with my beautiful wife Kendall — and of course in earnest consultation with our beloved Italian greyhound Murphy — and that is, after five years at Weekend Sunrise, I will be finishing up at the end of the year,” he said.

“It’s something I’ve agonised over because it’s honest to say this is one of the best jobs on earth, but we think it’s right — and at the right time — for our little family."

“While I’m sad, and I’m doing everything possible presently not to look Mon in the eye, where I am right now is honestly a place of incredible gratitude. For the laughs, the lessons, the tears, the phenomenal sense of life perspective, the carousels of astonishing snacks (even the tofu).”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sunrise (@sunriseon7)

He then went on to share that his last show will be December 8th, and admitted he has felt the pull back to being an investigative reporter and wants to focus more on crime stories and documentaries.

“It is my unshakeable belief that this role — specifically, being entrusted with the telling of people’s most intimate, most personal stories — is one of the more privileged positions on the planet.

“And actually, storytelling is probably at the heart of this decision – finding ways to tell stories that break the mould. I came to the Seven Network eight years ago with a background in crime and documentaries, and I’m being pulled back in that direction again now.”

Doran said he was thankful to the viewers, especially the ones that wrote in with feedback.

“What a monstrous honour to be afforded a few hours of your precious time on your precious weekends no less. That is one thing I have never, ever taken for granted,” he said.

“When I say this, I am saying it from the very bottom of my heart – you have supported me, in ways I never imagined would be possible."

Doran then shared some emotional words to Wright, his co-host and “best friend”.

“There will be time over the next few weeks to properly say goodbye and thank my family and the amazing Weekend Sunrise family but for now.. I do need to say this,” he said.

“Mon… you are not just a colleague; you are my best friend, and I am going to miss you."

“Let me tell you, however incredible you think Mon is on camera, it’s 10-fold behind the scenes – it’s the little things she does as a friend for her friends, that she doesn’t broadcast, and they in my opinion sum up her character, and define her.”

Wright said she was “honoured” to work alongside Doran, as she said, “Our friendship and laughs will continue off screen and while I’ll miss him terribly at work, I’m so happy for Matt and Kenny (Matt’s wife Kendall) and for them to now enjoy their much-deserved weekends together.”

"Absolute disappointment": Home and Away fans slam season finale

Fans of Home and Away have been left outraged after the finale of the 2024 season, with many claiming it was "boring and predictable".

Viewers of the long-running Aussie soap were disappointed by the feature-length episode that promised "bloodshed" and "deadly consequences" and while it ended with two lives hanging in the balance.

The show is set to return on January 13th and pick up where it left off, leading to the resolution that will see fans waiting almost two months for answers.

After Thursday night's finale, hundreds of fans flocked to social media to share their annoyance over all the drama being crammed into the last 10 minutes of the episode, despite its 90-minute runtime.

"Found the last episode so boring and predictable," one fan said. "How many more coppers are going to end up in jail?"

"I have to say, that was ridiculously s**t for a season finale," another complained. "The best bit was the last 15 seconds."

"That was the worst ending," someone else said, with another agreeing. "What an absolute disappointment for this year's final episode. Love Home and Away, but this was by far the worst final episode of the season ever."

"I was so disappointed with the ending," another fan said. "I expected it to be more drama/suspense but it was quite boring in my opinion. Now an almost 2 month wait for the show to return."

While many were disappointed, others were excited to see how the dramatic storyline is set to be resolved in the new year.

"I'm so excited for the new season," one fan said. "What am l going to do without this lol it’s pretty sad when you so look forward to it at 7pm," another lamented. "I can't believe I've got to wait till next year, it's already killing me," someone else agreed.
