"Every parent's nightmare": Families of poisoned teens share update

The families of Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones have shared a heartbreaking update as the teenagers continue to fight for their lives after being poisoned in Laos.

While travelling around south-east Asia on a gap year, the Melbourne 19 year olds consumed what is believed to be methanol-laced drinks in Laos.

The young women were found barely alive in their hotel room and were rushed to a hospital in the neighbouring country of Thailand, where they remain on life support.

Holly’s dad Shaun Bowles fronted the media on Wednesday in Bangkok where he confirmed his daughter remained in the ICU in a critical condition, where the family are spending as much time as possible by her bedside.

“Right now our daughter remains in the intensive care unit in a critical condition. She’s on life support,” Shaun said.

“We’d just like to thank everyone from back home for all the support and love that we’re receiving but we’d also like for people to appreciate right now we just need privacy so we can spend as much time as we can with Holly.”

Bianca's family also released a statement saying there was no update on her condition, but confirmed that she remains on life support.

"Our family has been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support that have come from across Australia," the statement from the family reads.

"This is every parent's nightmare and we want to ensure no other family is forced to endure the anguish we are going through. We hope the authorities can get to the bottom of what happened as soon as possible."

Authorities suspect the girls drank poisoned cocktails which reportedly had shots of "vodka" while holidaying in the party town of Vang Vieng, a popular tourist area about 130km north of Laos capital, Vientiane.

They were among a large group of international travellers who fell victim to what is feared to be a mass poisoning which has already killed two other people.

Editor's note: Police in Thailand confirmed the death of Bianca Jones on Thursday afternoon. Holly Bowles is understood to still be in hospital.

Update on Samantha Murphy trial as accused enters plea

The man accused of murdering Ballarat mother Samantha Murphy has plead not guilty, electing to fast-track his case to the Supreme Court.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, faced the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link, while Ms Murphy’s husband, Mick Murphy, watched the hearing from the body of the courtroom.

Mr Stephenson, the son of former AFL player Orren Stephenson, was charged with Samantha's murder in March, just weeks after the 51-year-old went missing after leaving home for an morning run on February 4th.

Crown prosecutor Raymond Gibson KC told the court that Mr Stephenson had elected to fast-track his case to the Supreme Court for trial.

This skips a committal hearing in the Magistrates Court jurisdiction in which a magistrate hears the evidence and decides if they’re satisfied it could support a conviction, and will allow Mr Stephenson to face trial at an earlier date.

“Not guilty, Your Honour,” the accused man said when asked how he would like to plea.

Mr Stephenson was committed to stand trial by magistrate Mark Stratmann and will appear in the Supreme Court later in November.

“Because the matter is now in the purview of the Supreme Court of Victoria, that court will be dealing with all matters in relation to this proceeding,” Mr Stratmann said.

Following Mr Stephenson’s arrest in March, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton remained tight-lipped about how the accused man was identified, but said the arrest came after a “painstaking and methodical investigation”.

“I’m not going to identify what has specifically led us to this man other than to say it has come about from painstaking detective work with great assistance from the public,” he said at the time.

Samantha Murphy's disappearance and alleged murder shocked the community and quickly became one of the most high-profile missing persons investigations in the state, and despite the efforts of police and volunteers, her body has never been found.

Brittany Higgins shares emotional pregnancy update

Brittany Higgins has shared an emotional announcement about her unborn baby, revealing the baby has been given the all-clear after blood tests suggested he might have a genetic disorder.

While sharing the details of her first pregnancy, Higgins revealed in a lengthy Instagram post that an amniocentesis had confirmed her baby was doing well after blood tests raised alarm bells.

“Given everything going on — it’s an understatement to say that we’ve had an acutely stressful pregnancy,” she said.

“A fortnight ago, David and I had the shock of our lives after the midwife told us halfway through my second trimester my blood test had raised some red flags."

“Our baby had a high probability of a genetic disorder – which wouldn’t have mattered to us – but scarily could mean he may be incompatible with life outside of the womb. After an amniocentesis and a seemingly never ending wait our prayers were answered. "Struggling": Sad update on Molly Meldrum's health

A close friend of Molly Meldrum has shared a sad update on his health, after he failed to show up for a special Countdown event.

With November 2024 marking 50 years since Countdown first aired, the Royal Australian Mint has launched a commemorative coin for the anniversary, holding an event in Melbourne in celebration.

However, Meldrum was a no-show at the event, with former Countdown announcer and close from of Molly's Gavin Wood saying he has largely retreated from the public eye as he has struggled with declining health ever since he fell off a ladder in December 2011 which almost killed him.

"The fall, it is all down to the fall, was a horrible thing to have happened," Wood told the Herald Sun.

"He is 82 in January. He has been a public figure all his life and I think he is just enjoying a quieter life."

"He is still Molly, still interested in music and still has it turned up to 11. He is still naughty, he has still got that spark that we love, but I think he is enjoying life being a normal person."

Although Meldrum did not attend the coin launch, he did release a statement, sneaking in his famous catchphrase whenever he recommended an artist on Countdown.

"I am left with such fond memories of those days and a show that will never be forgotten," Meldrum said.

"We made a difference to the music industry in Australia and so I am thrilled to see commemorative coin being made."

"Do yourself a favour and get one. Iconic Countdown lives on."

Wood said that his former colleague Meldrum would be "chuffed" to see something "as beautiful and as imaginative" as the coins commemorating the show on the special anniversary.

Update on search for Samantha Murphy

A fresh search for the body of Samantha Murphy, 51, has been initiated months after her disappearance and the discovery of her mobile phone near a dam. Murphy was last seen on February 4 when she left for a 14km run through the Canadian State Forest, a route she frequently travelled.

In a statement, a Victoria Police spokesperson said, "Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad as well as a range of specialist resources from across Victoria Police, New South Wales Police, and the Australian Federal Police are involved in the search."

The renewed search, which began on Tuesday and continues today, focuses on bushland near Grenville, a new area in the Ballarat region. Despite numerous efforts, Murphy's body has yet to be found. The police have urged the public to stay away from the area to avoid interfering with the investigation.

Murphy’s mobile phone was recovered in June by detectives near a dam in Buninyong, about 10 minutes from her home in Ballarat. The phone was found undamaged in its teal-coloured case and was still functional. Earlier searches were conducted in the Buninyong area and the Canadian State Forest, but they yielded no results.

The disappearance of the Victorian mother has gripped the local community, with many participating in earlier searches. Her family has been kept informed of the ongoing investigation.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, remains in custody as the primary suspect in Murphy’s disappearance. Stephenson, the son of former AFL player Orren Stephenson, was last in court on August 8 and is not expected to appear again until November 14.

Prosecutors requested a 12-week adjournment during the August hearing to review a brief of evidence, which includes extensive CCTV footage.

The investigation continues as police and specialists work tirelessly to locate Murphy’s remains and bring closure to her family.

Images: Supplied

"Lucky to be alive": Concerning Andrew O'Keefe update

Andrew O'Keefe will remain in jail after his bail was revoked, just days after being arrested on drug charges.

The former TV host was arrested on Monday and charged with drug possession after police searched a nearby car and allegedly found methamphetamine.

His arrest came just hours after the 52-year-old was discharged from the hospital, after he was revived by paramedics in the early hours on Sunday morning after an alleged drug overdose.

In Waverley Local Court on Tuesday, Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge said O’Keefe was “lucky to be alive” as she read a police statement of facts on an application to detain the former TV host rather than let him out on bail again.

O'Keefe was out on bail at the time of the alleged overdose, after allegedly breaching a court order, trespassing and intimidating a man in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in July.

O’Keefe’s lawyer did not argue against the application and the magistrate revoked his bail, meaning he will remain custody before his return to court in October.

“If he wants to stay alive that’s the best thing to do,” Milledge said.

O’Keefe’s lawyer suggested a possible application for release on the next occasion for O’Keefe to receive treatment but Milledge said “a “highly persuasive” argument would be required.

O’Keefe’s frequent appearances in court are “absolutely tragic” and “very, very sad,” the magistrate said.

“He’s a frequent flyer, he’s just so used to it,” she said.

“The mental health applications, the rehab, all been tried, and tested, and failed.

“I just don’t see the same thing over and over again is going to be working for him and, god help him, it’s a shame that he doesn’t have an epiphany.”

How is he right now?”

The actress provided a reassuring update: “Given the givens, he’s in a stable place.”

Moore and Willis were married from 1987 to 2000 and share three daughters: Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30.

Moore also revealed details of how she supports their daughters as they cope with their father's health struggles.

“What I say to my kids is you meet them where they’re at. You don’t hold on to who they were or what you want them to be, but who they are in this moment,” she explained.

“And from that, there is such beauty and joy and loving and sweetness.

“When I’m in LA, I go over every week, and I really treasure the time that we all share.”

The Die Hard star was diagnosed with aphasia in March 2022 and almost a year later, his family shared that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia.

Image: Instagram

Glad she is doing so well and you should be so proud of your gymnastics achievement,” one commenter said on the post.

“I love seeing an update on how she is going.”

"Bless her little heart! Her whole family are the epitome of resilience," another added.

"I think the whole of Australia is behind you Cleo! Well done," a third wrote.

The update was shared just two months after the family shared a collection of photos of Cleo enjoying life with her family.

The snaps included Cleo celebrating her seventh birthday, a family fishing trip, and her playing with her little sister Isla, and their first day of school.

Cleo was just four-years-old when she was kidnapped from her tent while camping with her family in Western Australia's Gascoyne region, around 10 hours north of Perth, on October 16, 2021.

Police and rescue personnel spent nearly three weeks looking for her, and 18 days later she was found in Terrence Kelly's home in Carnarvon, just minutes away from her own family home.

Kelly was arrested near the home and has been in custody in Perth since. He is appealing the 13-year and six-month prison sentence he received for the abduction.

At an appeal hearing in February, the court was told Kelly has various mental impairments, including a severe personality dysfunction, which they say was a significant factor in the crime.

Images: 60 Minutes Facebook

George Negus' son shares heartbreaking update on his dad's condition

The son of TV legend George Negus has shared a devastating update on his father's health, two years after his Alzheimer's diagnosis was made public.

In a heartbreaking post shared to LinkedIn, Ned Negus revealed that his father is now non-verbal due to his illness, and is living in an aged care facility in Sydney.

“I was hesitant to post this on LinkedIn, as it’s pretty personal,” Ned, who is Chief Commercial Officer for the A-League, began in a lengthy post shared on Father’s Day. “But then realised you’re all humans and there’s always a place for sharing human realities with your professional network.”

He continued, “For those of you who don’t know, my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s around five years ago. He’s now non verbal most of the time (mind-blowing for me but also any of you that know him).”

Along with his touching words, Ned shared a photo of him and his father embracing in a hug as they took a walk along the beach, recalling the heartfelt moment with his dad.

“He was clearly not sure why this particular walk was symbolic and sometimes not sure with whom he was walking,” Ned shared, before adding that his dad “smiled broadly and then hugged me for quite some time”.

“It was sad, but it was uplifting to know that even when you can no longer say what you feel, you can still DO what you feel. Love you Negsy.”

Ned ended his emotional post by all paying tribute to his mother for her endless love and care for his dad.

“P.s. My mum took this photo and is by his side most days helping him through, helping him remember (even the slightest thing) and feel. Massive shout out to her too,” he concluded.

In 2022, the Negus family revealed George's diagnosis, sharing that he had been living in care home since 2021.

“As a family, we are sharing the new path we walk as George faces the realities of his diagnosis of dementia from Alzheimer’s disease,” they wrote in a statement at the time.

“We continue to share wonderful family times and are grateful for the care and support we have had from extended family and friends over the past few years who understand our challenges.”

Image credits: Getty Images / LinkedIn

Miracle update on baby boy scalded in public park

The mother of the nine-month-old boy who was scalded in a Brisbane park has shared a positive update on his condition as he awaits his third surgery.

Baby Luka and his mother were enjoying the sun in Hanlon Park on August 27th when a stranger approached and poured boiling hot coffee over the baby boy.

The nine-month-old was rushed to hospital, while the man accused of the attack remains at large.

On Monday, Luka's mother shared that her son is up and walking again for the first time since the attack ahead of a third surgery that she hoped would deliver “more information about the next steps”.

“Luka has been incredibly resilient. He’s up and about, walking and causing chaos. He is such a strong little boy and we are so so proud of him,” she said.

The woman also confirmed that Luka suffered serious burns, with those under his neck and chest likely to scar, as the prospect of a skin graft has been raised by doctors.

She said she had been "blown away" by the support she and her family had received through a GoFundMe campaign set up to pay for Luka's medical expenses.

"This GoFundMe will be able to support Luka with all of his ongoing care needs which is truly a weight lifted off our shoulders," the woman said.

“Not only that it will also support myself, my family, and ongoing mental health, given the nature of the event this will be an extremely long journey ahead for us all.”

The fundraiser, that had a goal of just $5,000, surpassed $110,000 on Monday.

Police earlier described the man they wish to speak to in connection to the attack as between 30-40 years old, of a proportionate build, with tanned skin. He was wearing a black hat, glasses, a shirt and shorts at the time Luka was burned.

Major update in long-delayed William Tyrrell inquest

Almost 10 years after William Tyrrell went missing, an inquest into his disappearance is finally set to resume.

The three-year-old disappeared from his foster grandmother’s home in Kendall on September 12th 2014, in what has become one of Australia’s most notorious missing persons cases.

For 18 long months, an inquest before Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame examined William’s disappearance and suspected death, before it was adjourned in October 2020.

Ms Grahame’s findings were due to be handed down in June 2021, but the inquest was pushed back indefinitely as prosecutors grappled with evidence concerning the missing boy’s foster mother.

As the investigation into William's disappearance continues, his body has never been found and his foster parents have persistently denied having any involvement.

Now, after three years of delays, a directions hearing at the NSW Coroner’s Court in Western Sydney on Tuesday confirmed a final block of hearings will commence later in the year.

Starting the weeks of November 4th and December 16th, witnesses will be recalled to the stand as the inquest is formally recommenced, with the court saying that the witness list and list of issues was set to be finalised within a few days.

No one has been charged in the case of William's disappearance and a $1 million reward for information still stands.
