Airbnb breathes new life into Cuban tourism

Cuba’s tourism industry is set to boom in the coming months and years after relations with the US have been reopened and the country is beginning to offer Airbnb accommodation to people around the world.

Previously, only authorised residents of the US had been able to stay in Airbnb properties in Cuba, 13,000 American travellers in total since this time last year. Recently, however, the US Government has lifted limitations on the use of home-sharing services in Cuba, opening the country up to receive tourists worldwide.

Since April last year, when Airbnb was launched in Cuba, home-sharers in the country have earned an average of $250 per night, much higher than most listings in other nations. Now that restrictions have been removed, the cost per night should decrease and the total number of listings should increase, meaning great things for both travellers and the Cuban economy.
