Why hosting on Airbnb is great for ladies over-60 to earn extra money

Delores Smith, 69, says hosting on Airbnb is one of the best things she’s ever done. She recommends older women give it a go if they’re looking for some extra income and company.
My late husband Ron and I owned a unit down in Glenelg North in South Australia for 20 years. We had rented it out but when my husband became in with dementia I decided to turn the apartment into a holiday unit and advertise with Airbnb.
I renovated the place thinking of him and what his disabilities would require. I had grab handles installed in the shower to make it easier for people to get in and out. I also provide a shower stool, a shower chair, adjustable shower and a toilet raiser aid. With not many places catering for people with disabilities, I’ve found travellers who are disabled are thrilled to stay at my wheelchair-friendly place. I have had four different people who use wheelchairs stay in my unit and they’ve all found it easy to move around. One couple, whose husband had one leg, were so grateful for these aids as it made such a difference to their stay.
I have been with Airbnb for three years now and I've met so many different people from all over the world. I love meeting new travellers and have hosted people from many parts of the world including England, Canada, America, Russia, Sweden, Germany, India, Pakistan and Dubai. I know my city very well so I am more than happy to provide my guests with information and tips. I even offer a service of pickup or drop off at the airport for $15, which some guests do use especially when they are flying in from interstate and haven't yet made up their mind about if they were going to hire a car or not.
It is one of the best things that I have ever done. My unit is a self-contained and fully equipped with everything that you would have in your own home, even down to Band-Aids, so I just meet and greet my guests and supply whatever they require. So far it is working very well for me.
I’m glad I chose Airbnb because of the safety factor, which is very important to me – it’s a safe site to advertise with and all guests and hosts have to be verified. I feel comfortable knowing that I can interact with my guests before they come and I can see their photograph and read their profile. I would recommend hosting on Airbnb – it can be good for senior ladies who are by themselves and need some extra money and company.
