Prince William and Harry to honour Diana on her birthday

Prince William and Harry to honour Diana on her birthday

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will lead a private service this weekend to honour the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.

The young royals will re-dedicate Diana’s grave on what would have been her 56th birthday on Saturday July 1. It is believed the re-dedication will include words of reflection and prayer at the graveside.

Prince William and Kate’s children, George and Charlotte, will also attend the special ceremony.

Diana is buried in the grounds of Althorp House, her family home, in Northamptonshire. Major renovations have taken place on the site in the past few years, following criticism that it had been neglected.

Prince Charles and Camilla will not attend the service, as they on a royal tour in Canada.

However, Diana’s brother Earl Spencer and sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Baroness Fellowes are said to be attending.

Kensington Palace said in a statement: "The service, which will fall on what would have been the Princess's birthday, will be conducted by The Archbishop of Canterbury and attended by her family.

"The re-dedication of Diana's grave comes a few months before the 20th anniversary of her death."

The re-dedication follows William and Harry’s plans to commission a statue of their mother which will stand in the public gardens of her former home Kensington Palace.

"It has been 20 years since our mother's death and the time is right to recognize her positive impact in the U.K. and around the world with a permanent statue," the royal brothers said in a statement released by Kensington Palace earlier this year.

"Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit when it will be unveiled. It is hoped that this will occur before the end of 2017.

Prince Harry recently opened up in a candid interview about the traumatic effect his mother’s death had upon him.
