From cheeky thrill to grande dame – the Moulin Rouge celebrates 135 years of scandal and success

Will Visconti, University of Sydney

When the Moulin Rouge first opened on October 6 1889, it drew audiences from across classes and countries.

The Moulin offered an array of fin-de-siècle (end-of-the-century) entertainments to Paris locals and visitors. Located in Montmartre, its name, the “red windmill”, alluded to Montmartre’s history as a rural idyll. The neighbourhood was also associated with artistic bohemia, crime, and revolutionary spirit. This setting added a certain thrill for bourgeois audiences.

From irreverent newcomer to a French institution, the Moulin Rouge has survived scandal, an inferno and found new ways to connect with audiences.

Red and electric

In 1889, the Moulin Rouge was not the only red landmark to open in Paris. The Eiffel Tower, built as part of the Universal Exhibition and originally painted red, had opened earlier that same year. What set them apart, however, was their popularity.

The Moulin Rouge was an instant hit, capitalising on the global popularity of a dance called the cancan. Dancers like Moulin Rouge headliner La Goulue (“The Glutton”, real name Louise Weber) were seen as more appropriate emblems for the city than the Tower, which many considered an eyesore.

In an illustration from Le Courrier Français newspaper, a dancer modelled on a photograph of La Goulue holds her leg aloft, flashing her underwear with the caption “Greetings to the provinces and abroad!”.

Every aspect of the Moulin spoke to the zeitgeist, from its design to the performances, the use of electric lights that adorned its façade, and its advertising.

Its managers, the impresario team of Joseph Oller and Charles Harold Zidler, had a string of successful venues and businesses to their names. They recognised the importance of modern marketing, using print media, publicity photographs, and posters to spark public interest.

Among the most iconic images of the Moulin is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1891 poster. At its centre is La Goulue, kicking her legs amid swirling petticoats.

She certainly can cancan

Found primarily in working-class dance halls from as early as the 1820s, the cancan became a staple of popular entertainment the world over.

Part of the dance’s thrill lay in the dancers’ freedom of movement and titillation of spectators, as well as its anti-establishment energy. Women used the cancan to thumb their nose at authority via steps like the coup de cul (“arse flash”) or coup du chapeau (removing men’s hats with a high kick).

The cancan was not the only attraction at the Moulin. There were themed spaces, sideshows, and variety performances ranging from belly dancers and conjoined twins to Le Pétomane (“The Fartomaniac”) who was a flatulist and the highest-paid performer. People watching was equally popular.

Scandals, riots, and royalty

Over the years, the Moulin has been no stranger to controversy.

In its early years, it cultivated an air of misbehaviour and featured in pleasure guides for visiting sex tourists.

In 1893 it hosted the Bal des Quat’z’Arts (Four-Arts Ball) held by students from local studios. Accusations of public indecency were made against the models and dancers in attendance, and violent protests followed after the women were arrested.

In 1907 the writer Colette appeared onstage at the Moulin in an Egyptian-inspired pantomime with her then-lover, Missy, the Marquise de Belbeuf. When the act culminated in a passionate kiss, a riot broke out.

Historical footage shows the Moulin Rouge as it was.

Kicking on and on

Over time, the Moulin Rouge shows changed their format to keep pace with public taste, though the cancan remained. The venue hosted revues and operettas, and various stars including Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli.

Famous guests have included British royalty: from Edward VII (while Prince of Wales) to his great-granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, and her son, Prince Edward.

Since its opening, the Moulin’s fortunes have waxed and waned.

In 1915 the Moulin Rouge burned down but was rebuilt in 1921. Its famous windmill sails fell off overnight earlier this year but were swiftly repaired.

In the 1930s, it survived the Depression and rise of cinema (also capturing the attention of several filmakers). It also survived the Nazi occupation of Paris in the 1940s.

By the early 1960s, Jacki Clerico was managing the Moulin’s show after his father had revamped the venue as a dinner theatre destination. The younger Clérico oversaw additions like a giant aquarium where dancers swam with snakes, and its now-famous “nude line” – a chorus of topless dancers – in its shows.

In 1963, the Moulin Rouge struck upon a winning formula: revues, all named by Clérico with titles beginning with the letter “F” – from Frou Frou to Fantastique and Formidable. Since 1999, the revue Féerie (“Fairy”, also a French genre of stage extravaganza) has been performed almost without interruption.

Ticket sales were boosted thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film Moulin Rouge! and more recently Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

Since COVID, the Moulin Rouge management have diversified. The windmill’s interior has been rented out via AirBnB and the Moulin’s dance troupe has performed on France’s televised New Year’s Eve celebrations. This year, the Moulin Rouge and its dancers were part of the Paris Olympics celebrations, dancing in heavy rain.

Though people have come to appreciate the Eiffel Tower too, the Moulin Rouge can still argue its status as the pinnacle of live entertainment in the French capital: immediately recognisable, internationally visible, and quintessentially Parisian.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "A moving time": Hunter Valley bus crash victims honoured at AFLW grand final

Avid footy fans Nadene and Kyah McBride were among the ten wedding guests killed in the horror bus crash on the June long weekend.

They are survived by grieving dad and husband, Graham McBride, who was also on the bus at the time of the crash, but only suffered neck and arm injuries.

On Sunday, their lives and love for the sport have been honoured during the during the AFLW grand final between North Melbourne and Brisbane.

“We thank all of those involved in community football for their tireless efforts in making our game the best it can be,” the game's MC and Seven commentator Nat Edwards said as they brought out the cup.

Nadene, who was the founder and coach of the Singleton Roosterettes, has been named an official AFLW community hero.

Her daughter Kyah was a star player in the team, and was also part of the Sydney Swans AFL women's development squad.

Graham joined the guard of honour as his wife and daughter were acknowledged.

He paid a touching tribute to his loved ones before the game.

"Nadene has done a lot for football so to get their recognition back hits home," a teary-eyed Graham told Nine News.

"Everyone enjoyed being around the girls, they made you smile," he added.

In another interview with 7News he told the publication: “I think that cup will be full of happy tears and sad tears. It’ll be a proud moment."

”(Nadene) bled Sherrin in her veins. Footy was everything to her.

”I’m going to do it for my girls ... I bloody love them and they love their football.”

Just months prior to the tragic accident, Nadene and Kyah celebrated their teams win.

“For Singleton AFC when we first started, we were actually not very good,” Nadene said in a Ladbrokes video that resurfaced following the crash.

“One of our biggest deficits was about 263-to-nil I’m pretty sure. We only kicked two goals for that whole season, and I kicked them both and I was playing centre halfback.

“We’ve come a massive way since then and in 2020, miraculously and through a lot of hard work, we actually took out the premiership.

“We beat a team we definitely shouldn’t have beaten on the day and we did.”

Bus driver Brett Andrew Button was charged over the crash and remains before court.

Images: Getty/ Nine

Sam Newman backs down on controversial Grand Final plans

Sam Newman has remarkably backed down on his plans to boo during the Welcome to Country acknowledgement at the upcoming AFL grand final.

The former AFL star made waves last week as he called for footy fans to boo and drown out the traditional welcome by First Nations Australians, with many quick to call his plans "racist" and "disrespectful".

Newman even seemed to double down on his claims that the Welcome to Country was somehow more divisive that uniting, as some outraged Aussies even called for him to be removed from thew AFL Hall of Fame.

However, the 77-year-old has now quickly back-tracked his statements, saying he will not be booing during the Welcome to Country at the AFL grand final on Saturday.

"I wouldn't boo at the grand final, but it was just a flippant throw away line, I disagree with the Welcome to Country at the grand final," he said on his podcast.

"My point is that every single thing you go to now, you go into a library, you go into anywhere at all, the whole thing starts with it."

"The whole thing makes you feel guilty for being here."

"When is it ever enough that we say 'hang on a minute, this is enough, how much further do we want to keep going?'"

Newman again went on to say that he believed the Welcome to Country ceremony does not "unite us".

"I said last week that we should boo the Welcome to Country, it was an extravagant statement."

"(The Welcome to Country has) gone overboard and the social elites are only trying to placate their own white prejudice by feeling virtuous that they keep going on and on with this."

"This is why I criticised the AFL, it's just become a minefield of nonsense, they've got to pull it back."

"(It's) not uniting us, that is my point. Standing on the MCG on grand final day and saying 'you're welcome to the country and we give you permission to play on the ground', that's not uniting us."

"That's showing the world that we are a divided nation, that's my point."

Since Sam Newman's original statement, senator Lidia Thorpe has blasted his comments, saying he is missing the point on what the Welcome to Country is about.

"Sam Newman, I'm not sure why he's even in the news. Ten grand to even take a LOOK inside Melissa Caddick’s home

The luxury home belonging to alleged fraudster Melissa Caddick is up for sale, but prospective buyers will need to fork out a $10,000 deposit to view the property.

Ms Caddick is believed to have died after disappearing from the home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in 2020, shortly after it was raided as part of an investigation by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

The Dover Heights home has been listed by auction house Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty.

Liquidator Bruce Gleeson said he was hopeful that its sale would make a major contribution to paying the $23 million sum Ms Caddick allegedly stole from 72 victims of a Ponzi scheme.

"Since obtaining vacant possession in late May 2022 and receiving orders enabling us to proceed with a sale, we have undertaken certain maintenance and minor improvements to amplify the property's luxurious appeal," Mr Gleeson said.

Ms Caddick bought the home in 2014 for $6.2 million, with a recent estimate from Mr Gleeson’s firm valuing it at more than $10 million.

Sydney Sotheby’s has made the $10,000 refundable ‘entry fee’ a requirement to deter nosy neighbours and those following the ongoing inquest into Ms Caddick’s disappearance.

The strategy seems to have worked so far, as Sotheby’s estate agent Michael Pallier said prospective buyers had already booked in to pay the deposit within hours of the house being listed.

Errol Diamond, Ms Caddick’s former next-door neighbour, told the ABC that the refundable deposit will help distinguish interested buyers from those having a snoop, and that he was interested in seeing it himself.

"I think we will pay to have a look at it. Stunning view. I think we'll go for it," he said.

"I think [the refundable $10,000 deposit] will be the difference between genuine buyers and sticky beakers."

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom home won’t be the last of Ms Caddick’s belongings to be auctioned either.

"We are also well advanced and close to finalising an application to the Federal Court which will seek sale orders regarding the designer jewellery, clothing, and artworks," Mr Gleeson said.

"It is our intention to have an investor briefing to provide a detailed update on the Receivership and Liquidation status in late October 2022."

Images: Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty

But what you are, most importantly, is a classic, and classics never get old. Classics are very hard to beat,” he said.

“Julie, you have every bit as much chance of your name on that trophy again, and with food that tastes that good, and looks that good, I’m banking on it.”

Image: Instagram

“Please. God. No”: Basil Zempilas mocked for AFL grand final suggestion

Basil Zempilas, Lord Mayor of Perth, probably didn’t anticipate quite this level of backlash when he shared an idea on Twitter on Friday morning, posting, “TOMORROW @OptusStadium - 20.21 in the first quarter #AFLGF - we’re asking everyone in the stadium to stand for one minute and applaud - a nod to our friends around the country who are doing it tough & to let them know we’re with them in this difficult time. Masked Singer grand finale interrupted by furious security guard

Masked Singer star Jackie O has revealed how the taping of the grand finale was interrupted by an angry security guard.

The last episode of the show was set to be filmed two weeks ago but had to be cancelled just two hours before showtime due to a crew member testing positive to COVID-19.

The rest of the cast and crew were then required to quarantine for two weeks in Melbourne before producers allowed Jackie O to return to Sydney and Urzila Carlson to New Zealand.

“They put our health before the show and they pretty much sent everyone back to their home,” Jackie O said on KIIS FM this morning.

But despite the unfortunate circumstances, Channel 10 was firm on their decision to film a grand finale, and last night that became a reality.

“We are ambitiously filming the finale via green screen with people in two different countries, two different states and three different locations and they’re keying us in as if we’re all together in studio,” Jackie said.

“Urzila is quarantining in this hotel (in New Zealand) by herself so therefore she cannot have anyone enter her room to help her out with equipment. All she’s been given is some sort of GoPro to put on the top of her computer, she’s got a green sheet behind her and she has to do her own hair and makeup.”

Filming began at 4 pm AEST yesterday and went for over 10 hours. But in the last half an hour, shooting was interrupted by an angry security guard.

“It’s 1.30 in the morning and we’ve done two mask reveals and we’re waiting for our final mask reveal,” Jackie said on air today. “Urzila gets a busting knock on the door, we’re talking ‘bang, bang, bang!’ Ursula’s like, ‘Oh my god, someone’s at the door, they’re banging on the door!’”

The Masked Singer judge quickly realised it was hotel security.

“I said to her, ‘Why would you be getting a knock on the door at this time?’ She said, ‘Probably because for the last hour and a half I’ve been yelling out, ‘Take it off, take it off, take it off!’” Jackie said.

“I was in tears thinking about the people in New Zealand in hotel quarantine hearing some girl on her own at 3.30 in the morning just yelling out these things,” the radio host laughed.

The Masked Singer grand finale is set to air next Monday night on Channel 10.

"Absolute idiot": Grand slam birthday stitch-up puts Nick Kyrgios on the back foot

It may not have been the 25th birthday Nick Kyrgios had in mind, but it went from bad to worse on Monday night when a fellow tennis star posted a particular photo.

As countless people wished the talented Aussie a happy birthday, Greek tennis champ Stefanos Tsitsipas decided to go down a different path with his Instagram upload.

Tsitsipas’ post was an image of himself holding up a cardboard sign which he captioned: “Lift others up”.

View this post on Instagram

‎Lift others up 🙌🏼 . . . . . . . . 💭: @dudewithsign | #dudewithsign

A post shared by Stefanos Tsitsipas (@stefanostsitsipas98) on Apr 27, 2020 at 2:07am PDT

The only problem was, the sign contained a mobile number, which fans quickly realised belonged to the one and only Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios commented on the post: “You are an absolute idiot, everyone stop calling me!!!!!”

The number was quickly disconnected after what most likely was a never ending hoard of phone calls and text messages.

Of course, not all of the birthday wishes directed towards him caused a headache, as many took to social media to say happy birthday in a much more conventional way.

Jail time and $20,000 fine: Husband's grand airport gesture for his wife has landed him in hot water

A man has been arrested at Singapore’s Changi Airport for saying goodbye to his wife near her gate before her flight.

According to Singapore Police, the 27-year-old man was in possession of a boarding pass that allowed him to enter the airport’s transit area so he could farewell his wife, despite not having any intention of leaving the country.

By law, anyone with a boarding pass who accesses the transit area past security should only be there if they intend to travel.

“The Police would like to remind all passengers that the transit areas of Changi Airport are gazetted as Protected Places,” said Singapore Police on Facebook.

“Passengers who enter the transit areas with a boarding pass should only be there for the purpose of travelling to their next destinations. Those who misuse their boarding pass to enter into their transit areas, with no intention to proceed to their next destinations, are liable for an offence under the Infrastructure Protection Act.”

The man in question is now facing court and can possibly be fined up to $20,000 ($A21,400) or be jailed up to two years or both.

Police revealed that this is the 33rd incident this year where a person has been arrested at Changi for misusing a boarding pass.

Fans outraged at Australian Ninja Warrior grand final

Fans of Australian Ninja Warrior took to social media to slam the show for once again failing to produce a winner for the second year in a row.

In order to claim the $200,000 prize money and be crowned Australia’s first Ninja Warrior, a contestant has to complete the eight obstacles in Stage 2 in less than two minutes 45 seconds, then six obstacles in Stage 3 and then finally climb a 22-metre rope to the top of Mt Midoriyama in less than 30 seconds.

And just like in season one, not a single competitor was able to make it past the second stage in Australia Ninja Warrior.

No winner on #NinjaWarrior ? Fans stunned at MasterChef grand finale contestants

The two grand finalists of MasterChef have been revealed, after a high-pressure cooking challenge in the semi-final saw a fan favourite crumble under the heat.

MasterChef’s final three – Ben Borsht, 31, from Queensland, Sashi Cheliah, 39, from South Australia and Khanh Ong, 25, from Victoria – had to cook a two-course meal of a main and dessert for 20 past contestants each.

While all three cooks struggled in the intense cook, ultimately Khanh’s main of canh chua ca (a traditional Vietnamese fish dish) and violet ice cream honeycomb and dark chocolate mousse dessert sent him packing, leaving Ben and Sashi to compete in Tuesday night’s grand finale and face a Heston Blumenthal challenge.

Congratulations to our Top 2 for 2018! #MasterChefAU Grand Finale, 7.30 tomorrow on TEN

A post shared by MasterChef Australia (@masterchefau) on Jul 30, 2018 at 5:30am PDT

Ben’s modern twist on the traditional surf ‘n’ turf stood out as the judges’ favourite dish. Roger Federer breaks down in tears after 20th grand slam win

On Sunday night, Roger Federer won his 20th grand slam title after defeating Marin Cilic in the Australian Open final.

The tennis champion won against the Croatian 6-2 6-7 6-3 3-6 6-1.

The 36-year-old is the second oldest Australian Open winner in history after Ken Rosewall, who took home the title in 1972 at the age of 37.

Federer is the first man to break the teen barrier and win 20 majors, a feat he accomplished on his 30th grand slam final.

The iconic athlete also equalled the record for most Australia Open titles, alongside Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson who have also won the tournament six times.

After his win, Federer became emotional as he reflected on his year after bouncing back from an injury at this same tournament, one year ago.

“It is unbelievable,” Federer said. “Winning is just an absolute dream come true.

“The fairytale continues for us, for me. After the great year I had last year, it’s incredible.”

“Of course, I would like to thank Marin on another great tournament, congratulations on World No. 3. That’s a hell of an achievement and I wish you all the best. Keep doing what you are doing and you will achieve more.”

Federer couldn’t hold back the tears as he thanked his team and spoke of his appreciation for them.

Not a dry eye in the house.

The tears flow from 🇨🇭@rogerfederer and we've officially run out of superlatives to describe this champion. #AusOpen pic.twitter.com/Hi1If9uSMP
— #7TENNIS 🎾 (@7tennis) January 28, 2018

Fans took to social media to congratulate Federer on his win and share how his emotions touched them at home.

Nick McCarvel wrote, “Rare display of emotion from Roger Federer, who is now openly crying as the whole of RLA roars in approval. SCENES. Not a dry eye in Federer's box #AusOpen”

Another wrote, “He was so close to making it through the speech without crying! I’m crying now too.”

In an interview with Channel Seven after the match, Federer talked about how his emotions got the better of him.

“I was just so relieved when everything was said and done — I think I felt the same way tonight. That is why I couldn’t speak, it was terrible,” Federer said.

Cilic, who is now ranked as third in the world, thanked his own team and complimented Federer on his class.

“Well, first of all, a big congratulations to Roger and his team,” Cilic said. “It’s amazing what you guys do year after year.

“It was an amazing journey for me to come here to the final. Uproar over Australian Ninja Warrior grand final

Australian Ninja Warrior fans have been left disappointed after the much-hyped grand final aired last night.

After three weeks of watching everyday Australians tackle complicated obstacle courses on Channel Nine’s extreme reality series, Australia was eager to find out which “ninja” would take home the title. But unfortunately, no one did.

The exhausting series finales, where the 21 remaining contestants battled a brutal three-stage course, ultimately had no winner.

No one even made it to the third and final stage. Eight contestants made it through to the nine obstacle stage one but all fell victim to the time limit pressures of stage two. Stage three was Mt Midoriyama: a 22m rope climb to be completed in 30 secs. It was left unscaled.

TONIGHT 7.30pm: It's a race against the clock as our Ninjas have 3 mins and 45 secs to complete Stage One of the course! #NinjaWarriorAU pic.twitter.com/Gcqhw32dtw
— Ninja Warrior (@NinjaWarriorAU) July 25, 2017

Fans were quick to express their disappointment. Even Today Show host Lisa Wilkinson admitted her disappointment this morning, telling her co-anchors she can understand the viewer backlash.

“The problem with everyone who got so involved and loved the show... you invested all of that passion and energy and you have made sure that you are sitting in front of the couch every night to see every single jaw-dropping moment and when you get to the end you at least want one person, who was better than everybody else, to have their moment of victory - and we didn’t have that,” she said.

“I think that’s where people are feeling a bit like: I wanted to celebrate something at the end.”

Just Fred, our green and gold Ninja, doing his thing on the #NinjaWarriorAU course. 🔰 pic.twitter.com/gkABHgAvAi
— Ninja Warrior (@NinjaWarriorAU) July 25, 2017

The outcome wasn’t that surprising though to anchor Freddy Flintoff, who minutes before the finale commented: “It’s no wonder our expert said he wouldn’t be surprised if no one gets to the end of stage two — nevermind Mt Midoriyama.”

After all, in America, where the show originated, it’s taken seven seasons for a contestant to scale the final stage and be crowned champion.

Australia, I guess we’ll just have to wait until next season for someone – anyone – to be crowned Australian Ninja Warrior.
