Sir Michael Caine announces bombshell news

After decades of captivating audiences with his extraordinary talent, Sir Michael Caine has officially announced his retirement from acting.

The 90-year-old British acting legend made this revelation shortly after the release of his latest film, The Great Escaper. In an interview with the BBC, Caine reflected on his illustrious career, his recent film, and what the future holds for him.

Caine has been a household name in the world of cinema for generations. The esteemed actor has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including Oscars, Golden Globe Awards and Baftas. His cinematic journey began in the early 1950s, and over the years, he has left an indelible mark on the film industry, starring in over 160 films across a span of seven remarkable decades.

His filmography is a testament to his versatility, ranging from classic movies like Zulu and The Italian Job to more recent blockbusters like Interstellar and his iconic role as Alfred Pennyworth in The Dark Knight franchise alongside Christian Bale.

However, it was his role in The Great Escaper that pushed Caine to make the life-altering decision to retire. In the film, he portrays real-life World War II veteran Bernie Jordan, who escapes from a care home to attend D-Day celebrations in France. Caine's performance received rave reviews, but it also prompted him to question his future in acting.

“I keep saying I'm going to retire. Well, I am now,” Caine shared with the BBC. “I've had a picture where I've played the lead and had incredible reviews... What am I going to do that will beat this?”

Caine's frank assessment of his career, acknowledging that at 90, leading roles for him were limited, was a heartfelt moment for both him and his fans. He humorously noted that the only roles he could expect now were for 90 or maybe 85-year-old men. Leading men are reserved for the young and handsome, and he saw no reason to continue in the industry under those circumstances. Caine felt it was time to exit the stage gracefully and on his terms.

Even the role in The Great Escaper was not one he initially embraced. He had declined the role three times before ultimately accepting it, as he considered himself already retired at the time.

In this poignant moment, Caine also paid tribute to his co-star in the film, Glenda Jackson, who passed away in June, shortly after the completion of the movie. Jackson was a beloved actress and a longtime friend of Caine.

Caine's retirement from acting doesn't mean he's stepping away from the creative world entirely. He recently completed a novel titled Deadly Game, scheduled for release a month after his announcement. The novel features DCI Harry Taylor, a detective known for his disregard for red tape and political reputations. Caine expressed his excitement about venturing into the world of thriller writing, noting that it was a genre he adores. He hoped that readers would enjoy getting to know Harry Taylor as much as he did while crafting the character.

Sir Michael Caine's retirement marks the end of an era in the film industry, but it also heralds the beginning of a new chapter in his life as an author. His impact on cinema and his dedication to his craft will be remembered for generations to come, making him an enduring icon in the annals of film history.

Images: Instagram

Michael Caine shares his secrets to a long life

Michael Caine has shared his top three tips for living a long, happy and healthy life.

While promoting his new movie The Great Escaper, the 90-year-old Hollywood legend credited his nine decades of life to three things.

He told the Daily Mail, "Younger wives, no snacking and wear trainers at all times."

Caine then quickly added, "And you have to be careful not to fall down."

"Happens all the time. You have to just get up and carry on."

Elsewhere in the candid interview, Caine explained how much the business of movie making has changed since his big break, discussing the relatively new phenomenon of having intimacy coordinators on set for love scenes.

Asked about the coordinators, that are not found on most film and TV sets, Caine responded, “Really? Seriously? What are they? We never had that in my day.

“Thank god I’m 90 and don’t play lovers anymore is all I can say. In my day you just did the love scene and got on with it without anyone interfering. It’s all changed.”

Caine shared that his love of movies came after he served in the army, which he believes every able man should do to serve their country.

The actor completed national service in the military himself, serving in Iserlohn, West Germany in the aftermath of World War II and seeing action in Korea.

“I think every young man should be made to do it,” he said. “It truly makes a man of you.”

He added: “I only became an actor after I left the army. I did rep for nine years then got a movie and was like, ‘f*** this! I love films more.’ I liked the money and all.”

Olympic legend dies peacefully at age 76

Dick Fosbury, the high jump gold medallist who completely changed the game with his “Fosbury Flop”, has passed away after a recurrence with lymphoma. He was 76.

"It is with a very heavy heart I have to release the news that longtime friend and client Dick Fosbury @dickfosbury68 passed away peacefully in his sleep early Sunday morning after a short bout with a recurrence of lymphoma," his publicist, Ray Schulte, wrote.

Before Fosbury, high jumpers cleared their height by running parallel to the bar, then leaping over with a scissor kick, with their faces pointed downward. At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, he took off at an angle and leapt backwards, bending himself into a “J” shape to launch his six-foot-four frame over the bar.

The leaping legend cleared 2.24 metres in Mexico City, winning gold and setting an Olympic record. By the 1972 Olympics, 28 out of the 40 jumpers were using Fosbury’s technique. Today it still stands as the most-used technique for elite jumpers worldwide.

“The world legend is probably used too often,” sprint icon Michael Johnson tweeted. "Dick Fosbury was a true LEGEND! She loves to sing and dance, which we do almost every day. She’s just delightful.”

Dick Smith lashes out at Aldi: “When will enough be enough?”

Aussie entrepreneur Dick Smith has slammed Aldi, calling out the German supermarket chain for sucking wealth from Australia.

Mr Smith wrote an open letter to the discount retailer’s owners Karl Albrecht Jnr and Beate Heister, after Aldi was named the most trusted brand in Australia and our most profitable supermarket chain.

Mentioning how Aldi is employing less staff per dollar turnover compared to Australian owned supermarkets, Mr Smith asked: “When will enough be enough?”

In his letter, he asked if the owners have plans for “endless expansion” and continual price reductions.

He wrote: “Will these goods, just like your peanut butter, come from countries like Argentina where wages are extremely low?

“Won’t this mean our Australian farmers and food processors will never be able to compete with such low prices?

“You are privately owned, so it is not possible for Australians to share in the wealth creation of your company, and you also don’t have the costs of publicly listing on the stock exchange which would result in the employment of many additional Australians.”

Mr Smith highlighted how supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths and IGA were predominantly Australian owned, with tens of thousands of Aussie shareholders.

He said Aldi’s “phenomenal success” had taken away billions of dollars of business from existing Australian owned companies.

Mr Smith recalled his conversation with Aldi’s chief executive in 2000, then Michael Kloeters, who revealed why Aldi was opening in Australia.

Mr Smith said he was told: “Dick, in Germany if we don’t keep expanding we would be going backwards. Our plan is to expand throughout the world.”

In his letter he also mentioned Australia’s unemployment rate, saying that less Aussies would be employed because of the German company.

“We already have a problem in Australia,” he said.

“We have 14 per cent youth unemployment and over 20 per cent youth underemployment — that is, where our young people can’t get a proper full time career.”

He said the discount retailer was “basically sharing wealth less”.

“Your father, who started the great expansion of the company, worked out that by having a lesser selection of products, you could therefore employ less workers,” he said in his open letter.

“This would result in lower prices and higher profits.

“This plan has worked incredibly well in Australia. So well that the larger Australian owned supermarkets are criticised by many, while your company is praised.

“I have an important question to ask you. When will enough be enough?

He also accused the brand of going against Australia’s tradition of openness and being secretive.

“Can I ask why you are so secretive? Surely being worth $30 billion US dollars (that’s $40.63 billion Australian dollars) you have a responsibility to be open and explain your long term plans to all those who are affected.”

Aldi Australia chief executive Tom Daunt responded to the letter, saying that the company employs more than 11,500 Australians and partners with more than 1000 Aussie suppliers.

“We continually refine our exclusive brands together with our suppliers while supplementing these with other popular national brands,” Mr Daunt said.

“As a privately owned business we have never sought to ‘maximise’ profits at the cost of something or someone else. Rather, we opt for long term sustainable growth strategies.

“We are proud to have influenced the entire grocery sector, which has led to price deflation benefiting all Australian shoppers.

“Our estimates suggest that we are saving Australians more than $1.5 billion per year.

“This is money that is returned to the economy for bills, holidays, education and other vital expenses.”

What are your thoughts? Dick Smith’s $1 million anti-immigration ad to divide the nation

Millionaire businessmen Dick Smith has launched a controversial $1 million anti-immigration advertising campaign, regarding the hazards of overpopulation.

The commercials, which will start appearing on television screens around Australia from today onwards, will feature a voiceover from John Stanton, whose voice famously appeared in the Grim Reaper AIDS campaign from the 1980s.

Mr Smith explained the campaign in an interview with ABC Radio on Monday, arguing politicians had failed to properly address overpopulation risks associated with immigration.

“It’s a frightening ad that shows what’s going to happen if we have endless population growth - it’s going to destroy Australia as we know it today,” Mr Smith said.

“Every single Australian family has a population plan - they don’t have 20 children, they have the number of children they can give a good life to," he said.

“But our politicians have no equivalent for the country.”

Mr Smith is also launching a campaign to raise the company tax rate back to 45 per cent, and wants the tax details of the wealthiest Australians released to the public.

“The trickle-down effect is a complete lie, the wealthy become wealthier the poor poorer."

Mr Smith denied his new campaign was xenophobic, saying, “It’s nothing to do with racism.”

What are your thoughts?

Three golden oldies unite for the funniest film of the year

Sadly older people are rarely in the limelight in films these days. So when a film comes along that squarely but humorously tackles the realities of getting older, and puts the most famed silver foxes centre stage, you need to pay attention.

Better yet, gather your friends and mark April 20 for a date to the pictures, because you’re not going to want to miss the hilarious remake of the 1979’s hit heist film Going in Style (originally starring George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg) on the big screen.

The remake stars Oscar winners Morgan Freeman, 79, Michael Caine, 84, and Alan Arkin, 83, as a trio of retirees on a mission for justice. After their company is bought out and their pensions cut, the lifelong pals devise a plan to rob a bank. You see, the bank they're targeting holds their company’s pensions funds and they’re going to take back what is rightfully theirs.

Cue a hilarious sequence of events that does not shy away from the challenges three men of a certain age would have pulling off the grandfather of all bank heists. Think a typical action chase sequence that does not get very far because, well, the older you get the less spritely you are. But never fear, Arkin in a getaway mobility scooter arrives to save the day… sort of.

You’ll be shaking with laughter at the antics these old-timers get up to, but between the chuckles the film gets serious with the reality that many seniors are facing: disillusionment with a system that has broken promises and let them down.

These men have dedicated their entire working lives to the steel company, their friendships were forged over the assembly line, and they expected their promised pensions would let them live out the rest of their golden years. When that’s unceremoniously stripped from them, leaving them struggling to survive, it is the first time in their lives these friends step off the straight-and-narrow path – and you can’t help but cheer them on as they stick it to the man.

It’s a real treat to watch three stalwarts of the acting world get together on screen for the first time, and you can tell they had the times of their lives filming these crazy adventures together. But what is most refreshing about Going in Style is how real the “grumpy old men” characters are; they’re not the clichéd stereotypes we usually see of older people in films. Throwing caution to the wind for the first time in their lives, Freeman, Caine and Arkin renewed zest for life sees them embark on the craziest and most exciting of adventures, something they would never have dreamed of doing in their younger years.

The film is a reminder that not only is there a lot to live for after 60 but also that you’re never too old to do anything in life – even rob a bank (although we do not recommend you do that!).

Get ready to laugh, then laugh some more, and then after you’re done laughing, be inspired to make your golden years the best years of your life. As to whether they pull off the heist, you’ll just have to watch the film to find out.

THIS IS SPONSORED CONTENT BROUGHT TO YOU IN CONJUCTION WITH VILLAGE ROADSHOW.
