Grandparents found hugging after being killed by fallen tree

<p>Marcia Savage, 74, and Jerry Savage, 78, had already turned in for the night as Hurricane Helene roared outside. </p> <p>Their 22-year-old grandson, John Savage, had checked in on them to make sure they were fine after he heard a snap. </p> <p>“We heard one snap and I remember going back there and checking on them. They were both fine, the dog was fine." he recalled. </p> <p>But not long after disaster struck and John and his father heard a "boom" as one of the largest trees on their property in Beech Island, South Carolina came crashing down on top of his grandparents' bedroom, killing them. </p> <p>“All you could see was ceiling and tree,” he said. “I was just going through sheer panic at that point.”</p> <p>John said his grandparents were found hugging one another in the bed, in what he described as a final heroic act from Jerry who tried to protect his wife. </p> <p>“When they pulled them out of there, my grandpa apparently heard the tree snap beforehand and rolled over to try to protect my grandmother,” he said.</p> <p>Jerry did all sorts of handy work but worked mostly as an electrician and carpenter. Jerry went “in and out of retirement because he got bored”. </p> <p>“He’d get that spirit back in him to go back out and work," his grandson said. </p> <p>Marcia was a retired bank teller who was very involved in their church. </p> <p>Their daughter Tammy Estep said Marcia loved cooking for her family, especially for Thanksgiving, and was known for her banana pudding. </p> <p>The couple were high school sweethearts and were married for more than 50 years, with Tammy recalling that "their love was immediate, and it was everlasting”.</p> <p>“They loved each other to their dying day,” John said.</p> <p>The couple are among more than 150 people confirmed dead in one of the deadliest storms in US history. </p> <p>A GoFundMe organised for their funeral expenses says that they were survived by their son and daughter, along with their four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. </p> <p><em>Images: Facebook</em></p>

Jerry Springer dies at age 79

Rove gets candid about wife’s terminal cancer battle

<p>Rove McManus has opened up about his late wife's battle with terminal cancer, and how the couple navigated her devastating diagnosis in the public eye. </p> <p>The former talk show host spoke candidly with Jess Rowe on her podcast <em>The Jess Rowe Big Talk Show</em>, and shared how he would feel uncomfortable when asked questions about Belinda Emmett. </p> <p>"It was a tricky thing to navigate without getting mad at people for prying," McManus admitted.</p> <p>"I'd maybe give a warning and I've had times where I'd literally just sit there with my arms folded and say 'I'm not going to talk about it'."</p> <p>Rove also shared the difficulties of juggling his high profile career and caring for his sick wife, all under the scrutiny of the public eye. </p> <p>"At the time it was difficult because you're trying to juggle what you're dealing with in life with what you're dealing with at work," he said.</p> <p>"Having to do promotion which was part of the job you have to let people know what you're doing but then people want to know what's happening at home."</p> <p>The former talk show host went on to say that details about Belinda's health were reserved only for close friends and family, as he felt a lot of people asking about her wellbeing were now asking out of genuine concern. </p> <p>"It's none of your business what's happening at home, I'm not here to talk about what's happening at home," he said.</p> <p>"There are people who are like 'I need to know so I can write it down and tell people, or take it out of context, or make that key piece out of this whole chat that we've had'."</p> <p>The star explained that he'd respond to questions about his late wife with very brief answers or no answers all together.</p> <p>"I'd just shut down," he added.</p> <p>"People were told that there's legitimate no-go zones and if you don't respect that then you understand that maybe the response you get is not going to be a good one, and that's a roll of the dice you take."</p> <p>Belinda Emmett sadly passed away after her battle with cancer in 2006. </p> <p>Rove then remarried in 2009, and he and his wife Tasma Walton have been happily married ever since. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Retiree figures out how to win the lotto

<p dir="ltr">A retired couple have beaten possibly all odds when it comes to winning the lottery thanks to “simple math”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Jerry and Marge Selbee from Evart, Michigan, are multimillionaires because of a loophole in the gambling game.</p> <p dir="ltr">After retiring in 2003, Jerry decided to follow the lotto closely and discovered that it's easier than he thought to win, saying, “Anyone could have done it.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The retiree inspected the game called WinFall and found that if no one won the jackpot of US$5 million ($7 million AUD), then the money would go to ticket holders with fewer winning numbers.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I looked at the probabilities of the game and it said that when the WinFall actually occurred and no one won the jackpot, that the prize level would go up by a factor of 10," Jerry said on <a href="https://9now.nine.com.au/60-minutes/jerry-and-marge-go-large-lotto-tips-selbee-how-retired-couple-won-39-million/1e5093b5-be35-400f-a142-8ecdf0c289d0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">60 Minutes</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">"US$50 for a three-number winner and US$1,000 for a four-number winner and the odds were one in, one in 56 and a half for a three-number winner and one in 1032 for a four-number winner."</p> <p dir="ltr">Jerry went on to explain that part of the problem when it comes to playing the lotto is that people think it is structured.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I did not have to be lucky to win. I had to be unlucky to lose."</p> <p dir="ltr">Almost akin to placing a bet on himself, Jerry decided to test his theory and realised that he was right – and quickly came clean to his wife Marge who was all for it.</p> <p dir="ltr">The couple would buy hundreds of thousands of tickets for the WinFall game – but disaster eventually struck when no more tickets were sold in their hometown.</p> <p dir="ltr">Soon the pair had to drive 15 hours to Massachusetts to keep winning a similar style of lottery with the same "loophole" structure, but it was something they were both keen to do.</p> <p dir="ltr">Eventually, they were caught out by investigators but Jerry and Marge were in fact not doing anything illegal.</p> <p dir="ltr">Their story eventually became well known to the point that a film is being made for streaming service Paramount+ and will feature Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston.</p> <p dir="ltr">Despite their lifetime of winnings – in the many tens of millions over the years – Jerry and Marge remain quite humble, spending their money on education for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Nine</em></p>

<p><span>Jerry Seinfeld’s stunning holiday sanctuary may just be one of the most glorious properties you’ve ever seen from a celebrity.</span><br /><br /><span>The comedian and his wife, Jessica, are looking to offload the Colorado paradise for $19.65 million (US $14.95m).</span><br /><br /><span>The 27-acreage is frequently visited by the Seinfelds and their three children as they are all avid skiers.</span><br /><br /><span>Listing agent Bill Fandel told Mansion Global that the pair have decided to sell as their children are older and due to the fast-moving real-estate market</span><br /><br /><span>The guesthouse that boasts four-bedrooms and adjoins onto the property is also available for $3.65 million (US$2.77m), reports claims.</span><br /><br /><span>The Seinfelds bought the ski getaway in 2007 for a cool US$7.55 million.</span><br /><br /><span>The estate has been up for sale in the past as well, including when Jerry tested the waters in 2011, with a price tag of $24 million (US$18.3 million).</span><br /><br /><span>The couple then had a change of heart and took it off the market within a few months.</span><br /><br /><span>Colorado is home to many incredible estates that cater to the rich, and this 1,140 sqm rustic lodge with 11 bedrooms, 11 full bathrooms, and three half-bathrooms, is no exception.</span><br /><br /><span>Built in 1991, the home is nestled persfsctly into the private enclave and offers a perfect holiday spot for family and friends in the small town of Telluride.</span><br /><br /><span>Seinfeld purchased the main house in 2007, and the guesthouse a year later to use as a caretaker’s cottage.</span><br /><br /><span>“After the Seinfelds purchased the property, they did a remodel and re-imagined the whole place,” Mr Fandel said.</span><br /><br /><span>There is a vaulted great room that comes with a stone-surround fireplace, and even offers unbelievable mountain views from the floor-to-ceiling windows.</span><br /><br /><span>With an updated, state of the art kitchen and other features including a wood-panelled library, game room, gym and yoga room, and a four-car garage – it almost makes the multi-million dollar price tag sound reasonable.</span><br /><br /><span>Seinfeld, a New York native, dominated the TV line-up in the 1990s with his long-running sitcom <em>Seinfeld</em>, which ran from 1989 until 1998.</span></p>

Belinda Emmett’s mum marks 14th anniversary since tragic death with emotional post

<p>The late Belinda Emmett’s mother has honoured the anniversary of her death with an emotional tribute.<span> </span><br /><br />The world lost Belinda over 14 years ago from breast cancer on November 11, 2006.<br /><br />Taking to Instagram, Laraine Emmett shared a photo of the former Home And Away star surrounded by angels, along with the caption: "Forever Young!"<br /><br />"Miss you so much Belle ... 14 long years since I have been able to hear your infectious laugh, a smile that would light up any room you walked into and the most caring person anyone would meet ... "It was too late": Home and Away star Lynne McGranger recalls Belinda Emmett thinking her cancer was "just a cyst"

<p><em>Home and Away</em><span> </span>icon Lynne McGranger has opened up about the tragic death of her co-star Belinda Emmett in 2006.</p> <p>McGranger appeared on<span> </span><em><a rel="noopener" href="https://7plus.com.au/the-all-new-monty-ladies-night" target="_blank">The All New Monty: Ladies Night</a><span> </span></em>on Sunday night to raise awareness of breast cancer.</p> <p>During her emotional speech, she revealed that when Belinda first found a lump in her breast, she thought it was just a cyst.</p> <p>"I would be absolutely honoured [to do the show] and I have to tell you why," the 66-year-old actress said in the clip.</p> <p>"I worked with Belinda Emmett. She was 23 at the time, and I clearly remember we were talking about about breast cancer.</p> <p>"I remember her sitting in the makeup chair [saying] 'I've got a little lump'."</p> <p>McGranger continued telling her story through tears.</p> <p>"And we all went... [gasps]. And she said, 'Oh, no, look. It'll be just a cyst.'</p> <p>"And I think we hounded her enough, over the weeks and months that followed. And she did get it seen to, but of course, as we know, it was too late.</p> <p>"It was so sad. We all know somebody," she said.</p> <p>Belinda was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998, when she was 24.</p> <p>In 2001, she was diagnosed with secondary cancer in her spine and tragically passed away six years later in 2006.</p>

Jerry Seinfeld sledges Adelaide during Australian stand-up tour

<p>Jerry Seinfeld kicked off his first Australian stand-up tour in 20 years by sledging the South Australian capital.</p> <p>The 63-year-old comedian started the show at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, exclaiming, “Oh my God, Adelaide! You know how many years I've been wanting to come to Adelaide? Never. I've never wanted to come to Adelaide.”</p> <p>But it was just some light-hearted sledging from the comedian who’s never visited Adelaide before, as Seinfeld went on to say: “And yet I'm thrilled to be here.”</p> <p>The Seinfeld star is no stranger to poking fun at Australia, who famously joked that Melbourne is “the anus of the world” during his last stand-up tour Down Under in 1998.</p> <p>Despite Seinfeld explaining he meant it as a reference to Melbourne’s “geographical location”, he apologised for any offence caused.</p> <p>“I never said that,” he said during his promotional tour for Bee Movie in Sydney in 2007. “That was so mean of someone to put those words in my mouth. A decade has passed since she was cruelly taken from this world, and as her family and friends continue to mourn her passing with emotional tributes on social media, her parents have talked about her death in an interview with <a href="https://www.newidea.com.au/" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em><strong>New Idea</strong></em></span></a>.</p> <p>The exclusive interview saw the actress’ parents open up about life without their beloved daughter, and how they’re still in touch with her TV star widower Rove McManus.</p> <p>The 43-year-old comedian married Belinda in 2005 while she was still battling terminal breast cancer, and reportedly struggled to come to terms with her passing.</p> <p>And while he’s entered another relationship with 43-year-old actress Tasma Walton, Rove reportedly stays in contact with Belinda’s parents, who have developed a special bond with his three-year-old daughter Ruby.</p> <p>“Rove’s got his own wife and we respect that, but we stay close,” says Belinda’s father Michael, who said that he’s met Ruby.</p> <p>“It’s nice to have the little ones around. We’ve got our own grandchildren and they’ve all grown. The oldest is at university, and you do miss those little children. So it’s lovely to have (Ruby) in our lives as well. It’s not in a huge way, but it’s pretty wonderful.”</p> <p>Michael also touched on how bewildered he was that such a healthy person could be struck down by cancer so early, saying, “We have a memorial seat for her down near Ettalong, by the playground, where she used to jog and swim.</p> <p>“She never smoked in her life, and only occasionally had a wine. For her to be struck down is probably the most remarkable, ridiculous thing. She did all the right things, ate the right foods. For her to be struck down is a travesty of justice. Jerry Lewis rushed to hospital

<p>It has been confirmed that legendary comedian Jerry Lewis was taken to hospital on Friday after developing a serious urinary tract infection.</p> <p>The 91-year-old remained in the Las Vegas hospital over the weekend, with his publicist Candi Cazau revealing he has been treated with antibiotics and is expected to be released shortly.</p> <p>Lewis has experienced a number of health scares over the year, having been hospitalised in 2011 for exhaustion and 2012 for hypoglycaemia.</p> <p>Despite the latest hiccup, the star, who appeared in many movies with actor Dean Martin, is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, he’s set to travel to Toronto this week to work on a movie.</p> <p>We wish him all the best in his recovery.</p>

Yesterday, she played her part in welcoming Hillary Clinton as the country’s first ever female presidential candidate.</p> <p>The centenarian was called upon as an honorary Democratic delegate for the state of Arizona, and cried with joy as she voted in support of Clinton becoming the party’s presidential candidate. “I cried! I never cry,” Emmett said after casting her vote.</p> <p>She was eight years old when women in Arizona were finally granted the right to vote.
