Julie Bishop’s warning over the Voice result

Julie Bishop has warned that if the Voice to Parliament results in a “no” vote, it could send a “very negative message” to the rest of the world.

The former foreign minister said that the Voice was an opportunity to “get things right” for Indigenous Australians.

“We’ve done a great deal of research and analysis on the Uluru Statement from the Heart, the Yes campaign, the referendum, and we believe that this is an opportunity to get things right,” she told a Yes campaign event in Perth on Monday.

Bishop was then quizzed about what a “no” vote would mean for Australia's international reputation, to which she said she was “most concerned at the message” it would send to our global friends.

“It’s not a front-of-mind issue for most people, but I know that Australia’s international reputation can be affected by a No vote,” she said.

“I have no doubt that it would be sending a very negative message about the openness, and the empathy, and the respect and responsibility that the Australian people have for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.”

The Voice referendum, like any Australian referendum, requires both a national majority and a majority in at least four of the six states in order to pass.

Reports have suggested that support for the “Yes” campaign is slipping in Western Australia, hence Bishop’s appearance in Perth which was followed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s appearance on a local radio station.

Albo described the Voice as “just an advisory group so that people can listen to what Indigenous people have to say about programs that affect their lives.”

“That is all this is about, so as to get better results,” he said.

“The constitutional change is really straightforward, recognition, listening through a voice in order to get better results. It won’t change the way that parliament functions, it won’t have a right of veto.”

Albanese will announce the date of the referendum at a campaign event in Adelaide on Wednesday, with reports suggesting it will be held on October 14th.

Theo, an extrovert verging on arrogant, was always a drifter, a nomad, operating on the fringes of the law. Oliver, intense, creative and introspective, was destined to become a winemaker. Each vintage, every bottle from Oliver's Mudgee-based label, Four Dogs Missing, sells out.

“And now, after fifteen years without contact, Theo unexpectedly turns up at his brother's vineyard, bearing an invitation that his twin knows nothing about. The quiet and fulfilling life that the winemaker has built for himself is about to change overnight: Theo's arrival is the catalyst for a series of murders involving those closest to Oliver. Finding himself the main suspect, Oliver soon discovers that not everyone in Mudgee supports a reclusive and unorthodox vigneron who's shied away from the community that helped him succeed.

“Oliver is inexorably drawn into a sinister world where poisoned liquor and stolen art leave a deadly trail. Abandoning his grapevines, he sets out to solve the crimes – and confront his damaged past – before someone else he loves is found dead … beside a bottle of his own wine.”

None of This is True, Lisa Jewell

“Celebrating her 45th birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summers crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Julie Bishop tells all from inside King Charles' coronation

Julie Bishop has shared what it was really like inside Westminster Abbey for the coronation of King Charles.

The former Australian Foreign Minister joined many international dignitaries in London on Saturday for the royal event, where Bishop managed to snag a second row seat.

Bishop was invited for her role as chair of Prince's Trust Australia, and was seated beside Lionel Ritchie, who performed at the coronation concert.

The duo snapped a selfie together which quickly went viral, and was condemned by entertainment report Peter Ford.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Hon Julie Bishop (@honjuliebishop)

Ford claimed it was "so inappropriate to be doing selfies inside the Abbey", to which Bishop defended by saying they took the photo before the ceremony began.

"He (Ritchie) was very much in demand and he reposted my selfie. (But) everything moved perfectly and there were many moving parts and I had a fabulous spot."

"I was in the second row, so just one row back from the aisle. so I was able to have a, a pretty unhindered view of all of the famous faces walking by."

Karl parties with Julie Bishop in the hinterlands

Karl Stefanovic and Julie Bishop partied the night away celebrating the marriage of Karl’s own wedding planner, Teegan Deck.

The Today presenter was in the Gold Coast with his wife Jasmine for the big day, while Julie is believed to have flown solo following her 2022 break-up.

The event was held at the Beechmont Estate for Teegan and partner Dean Walsh, with a pre-wedding celebration held before the big weekend.

Karl kicked off the festivities with a post to social media, sharing a picture of himself and Jasmine in the hinterlands, smiling on a balcony at sunset, alongside the caption “Punching overs I know. Whatever. Queensland. Heaven.”

“Gorgeous,” commented fellow TV personality Michelle Bridges, with Today Extra host Sylvia Jeffreys echoing her sentiment.

“Couple goals,” wrote ‘The Boss of Bali’ Jason Fong.

Meanwhile, ex-foreign minister Julie took a similar approach, sharing a picture to her stories of herself with the happy couple, with Karl between them.

“Beginning the wedding weekend,” she wrote, “with family and friends.”

The celebrations continued for everyone, with friends - new and old - basking in the weekend of love and joy for Teegan and Dean. Karl and Julie caught up throughout, effectively putting to rest any lingering concerns over a prior moment of on-air tension.

And if the next wave of pictures shared to Instagram were anything to go by, it was smiles all around for the newlyweds and their crowd of loved ones - friends, family, and Australian celebrities alike.

The likes of Karl, Julie, Jasmine, former cricket James Brayshaw, and horse trainer Chris Waller were all seen together at various points throughout the night of the nuptials, with fans delighted to join in on their moment of fun through the pictures to Instagram.

One picture, shared by Jasmine, saw her smiling for the camera with happy bride Teegan, ex-foreign minister Julie, and a handful of other beaming guests in stunning gowns. The picture saw a chorus of compliments in the comment section, with cries of “stunning” and “congratulations” most prominent.

Another, posted by Julie and captioned “men in black”, saw Julie at a dinner table with Karl, Chris, and James, all dressed in black and beaming for the camera.

As for whether or not the group will be spotted again any time soon - this is their first wedding celebration together since Karl and Jasmine’s own big day in 2018 - remains to be determined, but in the meantime, their latest gathering seems like a joyous night they aren’t likely to forget any time soon.

Images: Instagram

Bring your furry friend’s face along on your next big trip

Devoted pet lovers around the world are no stranger to the struggle of setting out on their next adventure without their faithful companions at their side.

And while it can help to set a paw-fect portrait as a phone wallpaper to check in everytime the distance feels too much, it isn’t always enough - especially when you’re used to seeing their sweet little faces every single day.

Luckily, the people over at July have come up with a solution in ‘Petsonalisation’. It’s something sure to set tails wagging, offering pet parents the exciting opportunity to have their best friend’s face on their suitcase and travel accessories.

Forget limiting yourself to lettered monograms, all customers have to do is upload their desired pet pic, and then July will do the hard part for them - illustrating the image, and personalising the luggage, tags, bottles, kits, and notebooks on offer with the friendliest of faces.

“People love their pets, and often pets are the ones you leave behind when you’re off travelling. We wanted to create a way for all travellers to be able to take their pets with them, no matter the journey,” July’s Richard Li explained.

“Our personalisation offering has always been unique,” July’s Athan Didaskalou added. “We know that for something to be truly personal the offering needed to be diverse and inclusive. Multiple fonts, colours, emojis, and languages. In a world-first, I am excited to extend our personalisation service once more to include the most loveable beings in people’s lives: their pets.

“We’re a customer-centric business and our products are derived from what people want, with over 50% of orders already opting for personalisation. Your suitcase stands out even more on a luggage carousel and is less likely to be mistaken for someone else’s bag when it’s got your initials on it.

“A lot of people would love to be able to take their dog or cat on holiday with them, but with cost and customs, that’s just not an option. We like to think this is our way of enabling our customers to bring their pets on their travel adventures.”

Since launching in 2019 with their Carry On suitcase, July have progressed in leaps and bounds, now offering an entire suite of travel products - from luggage to backpacks, bottles, phone cases, notebooks, and various other travel accessories.

And now, the code ‘Petsonalisation’ can be applied for up to two pets per product on all of July’s luggage and accessories until April 25th - at $25 for accessories, and $65 for luggage.

While dates are limited for July’s pet offering, they’re no stranger to personalisation, and have been offering enthusiastic customers the chance to create truly unique items since 2019.

Their efforts are no small feat either, with shoppers able to “personalise up to five characters with 11 different font styles and 28 colours to choose from, even adding emojis”. And for those worried that they may not be limited in what they can write, July have an answer - they’re one of a limited number of companies worldwide, and the only one in Australia, to offer “personalised Chinese characters and additional Latin based languages such as French and Spanish for monogramming.”

There’s no stress when it comes to having it sent your way either - as anyone in Australia or New Zealand is aware, postage costs can be half the battle - as with orders over $100, July offer free shipping.

So, if you want to show the world your best pet friend, it’s time to hop on over to check out July’s range before April 25th, and get their face put front and centre!

Images: July [supplied]

“Fashion diplomacy”: Julie Bishop's style choice that charmed Barack Obama

Julie Bishop has revealed the style choice that charmed former US President Barack Obama and how she used fashion to impress other world leaders during her time as foreign minister.

"I've always understood that fashion and your personal style can be a powerful form of communication. It can send important yet subtle messages," Bishop told 9Honey.

"While I was Foreign Minister, I embraced what I called 'fashion diplomacy' and would often dress in a way that would complement the visit or the person that I was meeting,” she added.

In March 2016, Bishop stunned in a white Armani pantsuit when she visited the White House for the Nuclear Security Summit.

Bishop impressed then-President Barack Obama in the ensemble she chose as a nod to the official residence and workplace of the US President.

"I often wore the national colours of the country I was visiting as a form of compliment, a form of diplomacy," Bishop elaborated.

"For example, my Chinese counterpart often noticed that I was wearing red when visiting China or meeting with him,” she said.

In 2017 the Foreign Minister's office confirmed that all of Bishop’s fashion choices were her own, as she did not have a clothing allowance or stylist, and neither did she use taxpayer funds for her outfit.

Despite being known for her close relationship with various fashion labels, she also buys most of her clothes herself.

Although Fashion Diplomacy has helped the former politician get into the good books with other world leaders, she said that her intentions weren’t just to create better connections.

"The Australian fashion industry is a vital contributor to the Australian economy, and particularly to our exports," she added, promoting the Australian fashion industry.

Bishop hopes to change people’s attitudes towards the fashion and creative industries, both locally and internationally, so that they don’t view it as frivolous.

The former politician has spoken up about her passion for fashion and representing the older female demographic in a previous interview with Stellar Magazine on International Women’s day.

Image: Minister for Foreign Affairs/The White House

"Style doesn’t age": Julie Bishop stuns for International Women’s Day

Former politician Julie Bishop has made a name for herself in the fashion world with a series of stunning new photographs in Stellar Magazine.

The snaps, taken in celebration of International Women’s Day, see the 66-year-old Bishop styled in a collection of sleek dresses, and in one shot, just a smart blue blazer and some heels.

Bishop has been turning heads and making a name for herself with her looks for a while, and has even earned a spot as an ambassador for David Jones. And now, the former foreign affairs minister has opened up about her inspiration for the shoot, and what it means to feature as their cover star for the magazine’s International Women’s Day Issue.

“International Women’s Day is about empowering women, and women feeling self-confident - drawing on their strengths and talents,” Bishop told Stellar when asked about the pose that saw her prop a stiletto against a wall, “when we were doing that pose, I just felt that I needed to look in control, empowered. That was the message I hope it sends.”

“I see myself as a woman who pursues her own career, her own path in life,” she added. “I set my own standards, I meet my own benchmarks and I don’t let others define who I am or what I do.”

When asked how it feels to be a 66-year-old woman “representing a demographic of women who are typically underserved when it comes to fashion”, Bishop took the opportunity to stress her belief that people “can be fashionable at any age.”

“The designs and the models and the stylists focus on one demographic,” she explained, “I’m from one that is generally under-represented. I think David Jones appreciates that, as well.

“[I’m] a career woman who has had a number of careers, and yet still wants to be fit and healthy and dress well. Style doesn’t age. Women were considered to have a shelf life, and women in [the] media know this better than most. I think we’ve smashed that paradigm.

“Now you can be an achiever in whatever you set out to do. You can be fashionable at any age.”

The conversation didn’t stick to the realm of fashion, however, with Bishop also speaking up on her desire to see “more women moving into federal politics” - although she was uninterested in returning herself, having already served “nearly 21 years”.

“The more diversity we have in the decision-making forums of Australia - including the national cabinet - the better the discourse, the better the discussion, the better the outcomes,” she said.

“I would like to see many more women in politics. No nation can reach its full potential unless, and until, it fully engages and embraces the skills and talents and ideas of all of its citizens, including the 50 per cent that is female - in Australia, the 51 per cent.”

“I see myself as a woman who pursues her own career, her own path in life. I set my own standards,” Bishop declared during the interview, “I meet my own benchmarks and I don’t let others define who I am or what I do.”

“I was the first female to hold a number of roles: the first female deputy leader of the Liberal Party, [the] first female foreign minister, I’m now the first female chancellor of ANU [Australian National University in Canberra],” she explained of her decades-long work.

And when asked of her own ambitions moving forward, Bishop had one piece of important advice to share, “there are plenty of things for me to do. I will continue to aspire to do things that will make me happy and satisfied, and can help other people. It’s important for women to be authentic, to be themselves and not try to be who others expect them to be – and trust their instincts.”

Images: Instagram, Stellar Magazine

Take your pet wherever you go with pet-sonalised luggage

With the world opening up again and more of us making travel plans, it’s the prime time to exchange your long-serving luggage for something new.

To make it stand out from the hundreds of other suitcases and bags your fellow travellers are using, getting your belongings personalised is a smart idea - and now you can do so with the help of your pet.

July, which creates sustainable suitcases, bags, and other accessories that can withstand the sometimes rough and tumble nature of travel, now offers a world-first service that allows you to personalise your luggage with your pet’s face.

Since travelling often means leaving our furry friends at home or in a kennel, July’s service enables you to bring them with you on your next holiday.

Having trialled the service on July’s water bottle and the Carry Me mini case, the process of getting pet-sonalised items is easy - and the results couldn’t be cuter.

You can add up to two pets to your item, requiring a high-resolution, bright image of them (preferably a full frontal showing their face).

Once you have submitted your photo and order, the July team’s illustrator will transform your photo into the design to be featured on your item.

The final result is a high-quality artistic rendition of your beloved pet, featured on the corner of items such as the Carry Me case and in the centre of the water bottle.

The image I sent of my cat Toby (left) was transformed into a cute design featured on the case and water bottle. Images: Author

As for the items themselves, the water bottle boasts a soft, matte exterior, the capacity to keep liquids cold for 24 hours and hot for 12, and even fits in cup holders.

Meanwhile, the Carry Me case is quite robust and stain resistant (even after I spilled coffee on it while commuting), with pockets on each side and the option to have it open completely flat or more like a purse thanks to a detachable lining. The option to carry it on its own or with a strap offers nice flexibility, and it’s large enough to fit a phone and notebook (or your sunglasses, wallet or purse) and other miscellaneous items that you’ll need on the go.

While I have yet to travel with my Carry Me case, it has become my go-to purse for day trips and going out.

Not only is the pet personalisation an adorable option for your own luggage, it can make for a sweet, personal gift for the pet parents in your life.

Until December 11, July is offering free personalisation of its range of luggage and accessories - a service usually costing $25 - with orders guaranteed to arrive just in time for Christmas.

To see the full range of July’s products, head here.

Image: Supplied

Julie Bishop discusses the power of fashion in a male-dominated government

After a long career in law and politics, Julie Bishop is no stranger to being a woman in a male-dominated workplace.

Throughout her time in parliament, Julie was told by "an older white male" within her party to dress more like a Minister for Aging should, to "drop the corporate look" in favour of "cardigans", and was mockingly dubbed the Minister for Fashion while Foreign Minister.

"I had forged a career in law at a time when there were very few women in senior ranks and so I was accustomed to being in a very male dominated profession, so I didn't ever see my career through a gender lens," Bishop tells 9Honey in London.

"It was the norm to me, but over time, I did find the different standard, somewhat frustrating, but I knew why that happened because all the conventions and protocols and attitudes in parliament were established at a time when there were no women in parliament and it takes a long time to change people's attitudes."

As Julie forged her own way through the walls of Parliament House and demanded respect from her male colleagues, she found a way to harness her love of fashion to make a political statement.

Following in the footsteps of Madeleine Albright, the first female US Secretary of State – a woman Bishop says she "admired enormously" – she tried her hand at "brooch diplomacy" for a while "but I found that the use of colour was even more powerful".

Bishop began to help drive the fashion industry contributing approximately $13 billion to the Australian economy at the time, with the invaluable help of Vogue Australia editor Edwina McCann.

"I have come to accept that there are different standards applied to female politicians as opposed to male politicians but I use that, I think, to the advantage of Australia," she tells 9Honey.

"I was representing Australia overseas. So I deliberately chose Australian fashions that were notable and appropriate to send a message that necessarily meant that there would be media focus on my clothes, so I could hardly complain about it.

"But there were times when my promotion of Australian fashion was the subject of criticism. I believe that came about because of ignorance."

"My critics ridiculed me by calling me the Minister for Fashion [but] little did they realise that I absolutely revelled in that and wore it as a badge of honour."

"I felt vindicated every time a young designer said to me, 'Julie, when you wear one of my outfits on the world stage, I've made it. Suddenly the orders come in. Suddenly, people want to know me.' That was my vindication."

In June, the American Film Institute presented its 48th Life Achievement Award, the highest honour in American cinema, to the beloved stage-and-screen star Julie Andrews.

On conferring the award, the AFI praised Andrews as “a legendary actress” who “has enchanted and delighted audiences around the world with her uplifting and inspiring body of work”.

As anyone who has seen Mary Poppins (1964) or The Sound of Music (1965) can attest, “uplift” is central to the Julie Andrews screen persona.

It is a sweetness-and-light image that is easy to lampoon. Andrews herself is alleged to have quipped “sometimes I’m so sweet even I can’t stand it”. But it’s an element of feel-good edification that fuels much of the star’s iconic appeal.

The idea of Julie Andrews as a figure of uplift has a long history.

Decades before she attained global film stardom in Hollywood, Andrews enjoyed an early career as a child performer.

Billed as “Britain’s youngest singing star”, she performed widely on the postwar concert and variety circuit with forays into radio, gramophone recording and even early television.

Possessing a precociously mature soprano voice, Andrews was widely promoted in the era as a child prodigy. A 1945 BBC talent report filed when the young singer was just nine years old enthused over “this wonderful child discovery” whose “breath control, diction, and range is quite extraordinary for so young a child”.

‘Infant prodigy of trills’

Andrews made her professional West End debut in 1947 where she dazzled audiences with a coloratura performance of the Polonaise from Mignon. Newspapers were ablaze with stories about the “12-year-old singing prodigy with the phenomenal voice”.

Reports claimed the pint-sized singer had a vocal range of over four octaves, a fully formed adult larynx and an upper whistle register so high dogs would be beckoned whenever she sang.

On the back of such stories, Andrews was given a slew of lionising monikers: “prima donna in pigtails”, “infant prodigy of trills”, “the miracle voice” and “Britain’s juvenile coloratura”.

While much of it was PR hype, the representation of Andrews as an extraordinary musical prodigy resonated deeply with postwar British audiences. The devastation of the war cast a long shadow, and there was a keen sense a collective social rejuvenation was needed to reestablish national wellbeing.

The figure of the child was pivotal to the rhetoric of postwar British reconstruction. From political calls for expanded child welfare to the era’s booming family-oriented consumerism, images of children saturated the cultural landscape, serving as a lightning rod for both social anxieties and hopes.

In her status as “Britain’s youngest singing star”, Andrews chimed with these postwar discourses of child-oriented renewal.

A popular myth even traced her prodigious talent to the very heart of the Blitz. Like a scene from a morale-boosting melodrama, the story claimed the young Andrews was huddled one night with family and friends in a Beckenham air raid shelter. In the middle of a communal singalong, a powerful voice suddenly materialised out of her tiny frame, astonishing all into silent delight.

‘Our Julie’

One of the most pointed alignments of Andrews’ juvenile stardom with a discourse of postwar British nationalism came with her appearance at the 1948 Royal Command Variety Performance.

Appearing just two weeks after her 13th birthday, Andrews was the youngest artist ever to participate in the annual event. It generated considerable media coverage and yet another grand nickname: “command singer in pigtails”.

Andrews performed a solo set at the event, and was also charged with leading the national anthem at the close.

Ideals of restorative nationalism shaped Andrews’ child stardom in other ways.

Much of her early repertoire was markedly British, drawn from the English classical canon and rounded out by traditional folk songs.

Press reports emphasised, for all her remarkable talent, “our Julie” was still a typical English girl thoroughly unspoiled by fame. In accompanying images she would appear in idyllic scenarios of classic English childhood: playing with dolls, riding her bicycle, doing her homework.

Elsewhere, commentary was rife with speculations about Andrews’ prospects as “the next Adelina Patti” or “future Lily Pons”. The mix of nostalgia and hope helped make the young Andrews a reassuring figure in the anxious landscape of postwar Britain.

All grown up

Little prodigies can’t remain little forever. There lies the troubled rub for many child stars, doomed by biology to lose their principal claim to fame.

In Andrews’ case, she was able to make the successful transition to adult stardom – and even greater fame – by moving country and professional register into the American stage and screen musical.

Still, the themes of therapeutic uplift that defined her early child stardom would follow Julie Andrews as she graduated to become the world’s favourite singing nanny.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.
