"If it's not broken, don't fix it": Majority of Australians favour current flag

The majority of Australians want to keep the current design of the national flag, according to a survey by Roy Morgan.

The survey asked 1312 Australians whether they thought Australia should have a new design for the national flag, and a majority (61 per cent) said they wanted to keep the current flag featuring the Union Jack, Southern Cross and Commonwealth Star.

While many Australians believe that, "If it's not broken don't fix it" according to the survey, the majority support for the current national flag has gone down 5 per cent since 2010.

One of the other reasons why respondents backed the current national flag was because of the historical importance and heritage of the flag.

"Our ANZACS fought and died under this flag," one respondent to the survey said.

Other reasons why people wanted to keep the flag the same include scepticism about alternative flags and concerns about costs of changing the designs.

For those who wanted to change the flag, Roy Morgan said there was strong support for removing the Union Jack from the flag because of its colonial symbolism.

"Colonial ties to the UK are an embarrassment," one respondent said.

"We are no longer part of the empire," another wrote.

Australians were also asked if they thought Australia should keep the Monarchy, with 57 per cent saying we should keep it, three per cent less than in 2022.

When asked if we should become a republic, 43 per cent agreed, up three per cent since 2022.

"Australians are even more attached to the National Flag than the Constitutional Monarchy," Roy Morgan Chief Executive Michele Levine said.

"The results of this Roy Morgan SMS Poll on attitudes towards the current Australian National Flag and whether it should be re-designed show a clear split along political lines with the Coalition on one side, the Greens on the other side, and ALP supporters straddling the centre line with large segments advocating for a change and almost as many wanting to retain the current design," she added.

Image: Shutterstock

Piers Morgan has revealed the names of the senior royal family members who allegedly made "racist" comments about baby Archie's skin colour.

Mystery has surrounded the new royal family exposé Endgame, written by Omid Scobie, after he claimed to know which royals allegedly made the comments when Meghan Markle was pregnant with her first child.

Then, in a Dutch translation of the book being sold in The Netherlands, the names were accidentally printed in an "error", but kept out of the press for legal reason.

But now, controversial British journalist Piers Morgan has revealed the names that feature in the translated book, which is quickly being cleared from shelves, saying people have the right to know.

On Wednesday’s episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, the British broadcaster revealed the names of the two royals who allegedly had “concerns” about baby Archie's skin tone, although saying he doesn't believe any such comments were made.

He explained to his viewers that he doesn’t “believe any racist comments were ever made by any of the royal family,” he felt that his fellow citizens had a right to know information that only a handful of readers from another country were inadvertently privy to.

“Frankly, if Dutch people wandering into a bookshop can pick it up and see these names, then you — the British people here, who actually pay for the British royal family — you’re entitled to know, too.”

According to news.com.au and Page Six, Morgan said the names are King Charles III and Princess Kate Middleton.

Despite Morgan's claims, Page Six has been unable to verify which names were accidentally revealed.

Given the controversy surrounding the book, Xander Publishers announced that it received a request from the United States to abruptly halt sales of the book.

“I can’t talk about the details,” a spokesperson for the publishing house said in a statement.

“We have, however, received a request to put the title on hold, and that is what we have done. Piers Morgan lays into vegan activist Tash Peterson

Prominent Australian vegan activist Tash Peterson found herself in the middle of a fiery debate with British media personality Piers Morgan during her appearance on his TV program, Uncensored.

The 29-year-old activist donned a T-shirt with the slogan "end this holocaust" and an image of a caged pig, which immediately sparked heated discussions.

Morgan began the conversation by suggesting that people might be turning away from veganism because they felt overwhelmed by aggressive approaches. He referred to Peterson's habit of entering restaurants and playing sounds of animals being slaughtered, aiming to draw attention to the treatment of animals in the meat industry.

Peterson defended her actions, stating that it raises awareness about what she calls the "animal holocaust." However, Morgan took issue with her choice of words, asserting that the term "holocaust" should be reserved for the mass extermination of six million Jewish people during World War II. He questioned the use of such emotive language, fearing it would offend people.

“You’re (Peterson) one of those people that runs into restaurants and plays sounds from screaming animals in abattoirs and so on,” said Morgan.

“No, I don’t think so at all," replied Peterson. "I think it brings more attention to the animal holocaust.”

“Why would you use the word 'holocaust'?" interjected Morgan. “Holocaust is the mass extermination of more than six million Jewish people by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Why would you use that very emotive language knowing it would offend people?”

Peterson stood her ground, arguing that the term "holocaust" is applicable when looking at the broader definition of the word, as it refers to mass slaughter or destruction. She believed that multiple holocausts have occurred throughout history, extending the idea to include the suffering of non-human animals.

“If you look at the definition of a holocaust it is slaughter or destruction on a mass scale," she said. "Multiple holocausts have occurred throughout human history and non-human animals can be subjected to the same atrocities that humans can.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tash Peterson (@vganbooty)

Tomi Lahren, another guest on the show and a conservative political commentator from a ranching family, joined Morgan in opposing the comparison made by Peterson. Lahren emphasised the care given to animals within the farming and ranching communities.

The conversation also touched on British TV personality Bear Grylls, who had recently given up veganism. Peterson accused Grylls of being a "fake vegan," which Morgan questioned, pointing out that Grylls had authored a vegan cookbook. Peterson, however, maintained that true vegans would never abandon their ethical stance against animal abuse and murder.

Morgan concluded the discussion by criticising Peterson's protest methods, urging her to explore more effective ways to promote veganism rather than resorting to disruptive actions like entering restaurants and playing distressing animal sounds.

Peterson is currently in the UK for the Vegan Camp Out Festival, where she is scheduled to be a guest speaker. However, she had to seek clearance from a Perth court due to charges related to an incident in which she allegedly refused to leave a restaurant during a confrontation with anti-vegan chef John Mountain.

Images: Instagram

His family are heartbroken and he will be forever missed.”

Kennison was climbing to raise money for Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA).

Rather than flowers, his family has asked others to support Kennison’s fundraising page.

In a crippling blow, Kennison’s family has been told it’s too dangerous to retrieve his body.

Local media reports his remains are still in the mountain’s balcony area.

Expedition company Asian Trekking helped Kennison organise the trip, and managing director Dawa Steven Sherpa said two guides accompanied the Aussie when he became unresponsive.

“They ran out of oxygen and bringing supplement bottles from Camp IV couldn’t be possible due to excessive winds,” Sherpa told AFP.

“It was high wind and bad weather that prevented them (from) going back to bring him down. He died at the Balcony area.”

Kennison, a diesel mechanic who was living in Perth, was involved in a horrific car crash when he was 22 years old.

He said he spiralled into depression after being told he would no longer be able to work as a mechanic given multiple broken bones and a spinal cord injury.

After years of rehabilitation, Kennison learnt to walk again and was able to go back to work.

However, about four years ago, he returned to rehab due to nerve damage in his spine.

“A personal goal for me is that fulfilment. To put together all my experiences and just be the person I know I can with integrity and live with all my beliefs and values and just accept that I have had injuries, but I’m still OK.”

Piers Morgan lashes out at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Piers Morgan has once again lashed out at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry but this time over their Netflix doco series trailer.

The trailer for the $157 million show dropped just hours after Prince William and Kate Middleton arrived in the US.

The official Netflix account shared the trailer for the show with the caption reading: “Harry & Meghan. A Netflix Global Event. Coming soon, only on Netflix.”

This has however infuriated renowned journalist Piers Morgan for being “so ghastly, so repugnant, so dripping in sanctimony and fake hammy ‘woe-is-us’ acting, that I felt my intestines physically recoil in abject disgust.”

“Imagine bleating constantly about privacy, including repeatedly suing news organisations for intrusion, and then making a kiss-and-tell reality show about your private lives?

“Or preaching endlessly about compassion, yet once again trashing your family on global television?”

The six part series will tell Harry and Meghan’s story after they left the royal family.

Harry & Meghan. A Netflix Global Event. Coming soon, only on Netflix. pic.twitter.com/ysxaCcESP4

— Netflix (@netflix) December 1, 2022

“I had to do everything I could to protect my family,” Prince Harry says in the trailer.

And Meghan is quoted saying: “When the stakes are this high doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”

“No one sees what goes on behind closed doors” Harry continues as an image of the pair pops up with Meghan holding her head and crying while on the phone.

Piers went on to point out everything the couple have done since leaving the royal family, including Meghan’s podcast calling out the monarch, or the new book Harry is writing.

“The couple’s hypocrisy is truly mind-blowing, but so is the malevolent intent,” he continued.

“I expect this kind of thing from Markle who disowned most of her own family in her ruthless stampede to fame and fortune and has now manipulated her dimwit husband to do the same to his.

“But for Harry to do this to his own brother, William, is an unforgivable act of treachery,” Piers said about the trailer dropping in the middle of the new Prince and Princess of Wales’ first, and vitally important big trip to America since the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“Every time I think the Sussexes have plummeted as low as they can go, they go lower.

“They’re an absolute disgrace and as I’ve said many times, King Charles should strip them of all remaining titles and cast them out from any more connection to the Royal Family – before they destroy it and bring down the Monarchy.”

Images: Netflix

A guide to storing wine

In years gone past, many wineries would bottle and store wine for several years before selling it at optimal drinking years. Though many wineries still do this, it is becoming less and less of a common practice. At Mount Pleasant, they store many of their wines for longer periods – for instance, the Elizabeth Aged Semillon and Lovedale Semillon are both held for a minimum of five years. However the responsibility of cellaring has generally shifted toward the customer, under the increased desire for early drinking styled wines and the financial pressures of the Australian wine industry.

With the onus of cellaring now on the customer it has led to a rise in the number of wine storage options available on the market. However, before you start on setting up your own wine cellar, it is important to consider a long-term strategy, primarily establishing which wines will deliver palate satisfaction years down the track and what wine storage system is best suited to your needs and budget.

Wine style best for cellaring

Aside from vintage, the grape variety is also an important consideration. As a rule of thumb, stick to what a particular wine region does best. For example, Hunter Valley semillon and shiraz; Clare Valley Riesling; Barossa Valley shiraz; Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon; Margaret River chardonnay and SSB are just a few examples. Consider the acid structure in white wines and the tannin profile in red wines. Generally speaking, these two components in wines help them stand up over time.

Alternatively, let the experts guide you in the process. There is a huge range of knowledgeable wine commentators on the topic of cellaring and most of them have websites that list the appropriate length of time for cellaring each vintage of each wine. Like Mount Pleasant, most wineries also provide information in regard to cellaring of their wines. Just remember to stick to those people you can trust! Don’t gamble 10 years of cellaring on Wikipedia!

Bottle size

Cellaring wine for a wedding anniversary or grandchild’s 21st birthday is always a nice way to mark the occasion, provided you think you can resist the temptation. A good tip is to remember that bigger is better. A magnum bottle will not only allow more people to enjoy the wine but it will also age in the bottle at a slower rate. Because producers are releasing more forward drinking style wines, an aged magnum bottle will smell and taste more in tune with the flavour profile our palates are used to.

Closure

Without weighing into the cork versus screw cap debate, choosing wines for cellaring that have a screw cap closure will negate the possibility of any cork spoilage. Nothing could be more frustrating than waiting patiently on a bottle of wine, only to find the cork has failed! Bottles that have synthetic closures are fine for early drinking wine styles but it is best to avoid them when choosing to cellar wine for extended periods of time.

Correct wine storage

In order to get the most out of a wine, it is absolutely essential that you store it in the right environment. A constant temperature with little fluctuation between day and night, summer and winter, should be a high priority. A wine that is experiencing marked fluctuations in temperature will age quicker than desired. A cool temperature between 12°C to 15°C is desirable. If you reside in a warm climate, the wine is better off stored at a constant temperature around 16°C or 18°C than a temperature that is cooler, but fluctuates significantly. If bottled with a cork closure the cork will expand and contract in the neck of the bottle, altering its resilient condition, allowing oxygen to seep in and wine to leak out.

A dark environment is important, especially if you are cellaring white wines. Prolonged exposure to either natural or artificial light will cause the colour of the wine to bleach in the bottle and cause premature aging of the wine, reducing its aesthetic appeal.

Choosing to lie your bottles down or have them standing up is not an issue with screw-cap closures, nor is storing the wine in a slightly humid environment. However if the bottles have cork closures they must be lying down to keep the wine in contact with the cork and therefore expanded in the neck of the bottle. Bottles with a cork should also be kept in a room with 75 per cent room humidity, in order to keep the end of the cork expanded. One without the other could lead to the dreaded oxidation and leakage of wine.

Image: Getty

Outpouring of love for Princess Diana

Princess Diana has been remembered on the 25th anniversary of her tragic death.

The People’s Princess died following a horrific car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Fans and family have taken to social media to remember Princess Diana, with her brother Earl Charles Spencer uploading a photo of Althorp House — the family's ancestral home and where Diana was laid to rest — with a flag flying at half mast.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Calls for new rules surrounding golf carts

There are calls for golf cart drivers to pass a driving test and obtain a licence before getting behind t

Marina Hanna, 29, and husband Robbie Morgan married in a lavish wedding in Sydney’s Doltone House on June 11.

Ten days later, the loved up couple jetsetted to Queensland’s Hamilton Island to celebrate their honeymoon and were travelling in a golf cart when Marina fell after Robbie tried to do a U-turn.

A doctor, off-duty dentist and off-duty firefighter rushed to the scene and desperately performed CPR for 35 minutes on Marina, who unfortunately could not be revived.

Following this awful incident, Pedestrian Council of Australia CEO Harold Scrub has called on golf carts to be banned on the holiday island.

“It was out of control when I was there. I was having to jump out of the way of them,” he said of the holiday island.

“It just seemed like most of the people there had no idea how to use them and it was the first time they'd used them. They seemed to be very flimsy.”

Mr Scrub was saying the island was small enough to walk around and golf carts weren’t necessary.

“They don't need them. It's not a big island. People can walk, or the resorts should lay on some shuttle buses like they do elsewhere,” he continued.

“You have to ask if the carts have a speed governor on them, or if they are speed limited. Who maintains them? What's the insurance situation with them?

“It seemed to be completely unlicensed and anyone could jump on them and drive away. They should be banned.

“Who on earth approved these things? I wouldn't mind if they were for the disabled - but these are just a joy ride cart.

“You should be at least 18 and have passed a driving test before you're allowed to drive these.

“You need to know the rules of the road and how vehicles operate.”

Images: Facebook

"He's basically a pig": Erin Molan and Piers Morgan slam Kyrgios

Erin Molan and Piers Morgan have called out the court-side antics of Nick Kyrgios, after he was slammed for his behaviour at Wimbledon.

After Kyrgios' first round win, he spoke of his frustration with a line judge and admitted to spitting in the direction of a disgruntled spectator, as well as eating sushi throughout an explosive post-match press conference.

Appalled by his actions, Piers Morgan condemned his behaviour in an interview with Erin Molan on Sky News’ Piers Morgan Uncensored.

Morgan vented, “He’s basically a pig he’s eating his food as he talks to the media, he abuses a female lineswoman, he abuses an elderly linesman, he abuses the crowd, he spits at one of them."

“The man is out of control. Can you put up any defence for this antipodean monster?”

Molan agreed with his comments, saying, “Piers, there's plenty of Australians who think he's in an absolute tool as well.

“I’ve been one of his most vocal critics for a very long time.”

“But I'll tell you what, the spitting even towards someone in their direction is appalling,” she continued.

“The abuse of anyone in their workplace is appalling, the hypocrisy that he displays is completely appalling."

“He replied to someone on social media overnight that had taken him to task over this and said, ‘Oh, but I would never go into your workplace and abuse you.’"

“Does he think the linesmen are volunteers? That's their workplace he's abusing them.”

Following the incident at Wimbledon, Nick Kyrgios defended his actions as he believed he did nothing wrong.

He went on to say it was unfair that the audience was allowed to shout things at the tennis star and he couldn't respond.

“That’s fine. But if I give it back to you, then that’s just how it is," he said.

“There’s a fence there and I physically can’t do anything or say anything because I’ll get in trouble. They’re able to say anything they want.”

Piers Morgan slams Ukraine’s “sympathy” Eurovision win

Piers Morgan has slammed the winners of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, claiming the act from Ukraine won on a “sympathy vote”.

The rap group Kalush Orchestra were crowned winners of the annual contest for their song Stefania, with Morgan claiming that their musical talent was not considered in the voting process, but rather that their country is under attack.

In a Twitter post, the 57-year-old broadcaster wrote, “Nobody who voted for Ukraine thought it was the best song because it obviously wasn’t anywhere near the best. Even Ukrainians don’t think it was the best song.”

“They got the sympathy vote, which is fine as long as we drop the word ‘contest’ from Eurovision.”

Morgan also suggested that the contest is a “rigged farce” and suggested Ukraine would have won due to the highly publicised invasion by Russia, regardless of their act.

He added in a separate tweet, “The world’s most absurd, pointless, politically-motivated ‘contest’ excels itself. Ukraine could have sent one of its heroic bomb-sniffing dogs to bark the national anthem and still won. Happy for them, but please let’s stop calling #Eurovision a contest... it’s a rigged farce.”

Kalush Orchestra frontman Oleh Psiuk thinks that their winning song, which pays tribute to his mother, has been redefined as a rallying cry for Ukraine amid the devastating conflict with Russia.

He said, “After it all started with the war and the hostilities, it took on additional meaning, and many people started seeing it as their mother, Ukraine, in the meaning of the country.”

“It has become really close to the hearts of so many people in Ukraine.”

"Count them up": The mounting signs you could end up with long Covid

People who suffer from more than one symptom from Covid for a prolonged period of time are likely to end up with a debilitating condition.

Dr Anthony Byrne from St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney said the more symptoms one experiences due to Covid will see them more susceptible to long Covid.

According to NSW Health, long Covid refers to prolonged symptoms or lasting effects of a Covid-19 infection.

Some of the long-term symptoms include extreme tiredness, chest pain, shortness of breath, brain fog, memory loss and changes to taste and smell.

“The more symptoms you show when you have a diagnosis acutely, the more likely you are to go on to have long Covid,'' Dr Byrne told Daily Mail Australia.

“So if you just have the sniffles, that's probably fine, but if you've got a headache, shortness of breath, fever... count them up. If there's more than five, there's an increased risk of long Covid.”

Dr Byrne said we needed to remove the impression that young people are not susceptible to long Covid.

“I saw a high functioning, young individual, he was in a high-flying job, who got Covid in December and he hasn't been able to work since,” he said.

Dr Byrne explained that the patient now suffers sleep issues, crippling fatigue and his brain “doesn’t function properly” which is why he couldn’t go back.

There are different factors such as vaccination status, health conditions and old age, that could contribute to how someone experiences Covid and long Covid.

Image: Shutterstock
