Serena Williams “mortified” by health scare

Serena Williams has undergone a procedure in hospital to remove a brachial cyst in her neck.

The tennis legend documented her health scare on TikTok, sharing how she ended up in surgery after doctors originally told her not to worry about it.

“A lot has been happening and I had surgery recently where I had to take some yucky medicine that I hated so much,” she said in a video.

“One day back in May, I found this big mass on my neck. I was mortified by it and I got tests done — everything you can imagine. Everything was negative."

“Turns out I have what’s called a cyst, a brachial cyst, to be exact."

“(Doctors) said I don’t need to get it removed if I don’t want. So, I did not get it (removed) but it kept growing."

“I decided to get more tests and, three tests and one biopsy later, everything was still negative, but doctors advised I get it removed as soon as possible because it was the size of a small grapefruit and it could get infected, or worse, leak.”

Williams then shared vision of the procedure she had to undergo to have it removed.

“So, I ended up having to get it removed. It was so big, it was the size of a grapefruit, and it kind of hurt at coming out,” she went on.

“Obviously I went under (general anesthetic) for it, but they had to put a drain in it because it was so much."

“But everything worked out and I feel really happy to have worked with some great doctors."

“A little scared here but excited to move on to the next steps of healing and doing well.”

The 43-year-old mother-of-two is still recovering from the operation, saying, “I am feeling so grateful, and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all I’m healthy."

Image credits: TikTok / Andrew Schwartz / Shutterstock Editorial

Serena Williams: why more athletes are retiring later

Serena Williams has announced she’s retiring. The tennis star has had a long and decorated career, winning 23 grand slams and establishing herself as one of the most well-known professional athletes in the world. Williams, who is 40, joins a host of other professional athletes who have continued to compete well beyond the typical retirement age for athletes – which is between 28-32 years of age. Other notable athletes still competing at the highest level of their sport after 40 include English cricketer James Anderson (who is 40) and American surfer Kelly Slater (who is 50).

There are many reasons an athlete may choose to retire from sport, such as injury, illness, fitness or family. But a combination of better training, nutrition and recovery techniques may help explain why a growing number of athletes are competing past what was once considered their “prime”.

Training

Athletes have a wealth of support systems to help them in their training – including their coach, who helps them reach their peak for certain performances and recover between games or competitions.

The “old school” approach to training consisted of high-intensity exercise to failure or fatigue – essentially pushing an athlete until they couldn’t do any more during that training session. The main benefit of this approach is that it’s time-efficient, as the more intense the exercise, the less time is needed to achieve the benefits of training.

But a more structured approach is now favoured by many athletes and coaches. The reason for this shift in training styles is thanks in large part to research over the past 20 years showing burnout and injuries are more common as a result of overtraining caused by high-intensity exercise.

To avoid this, most athletes now use polarised training, which favours moderate-intensity training. Polarised training still improves performance, but with less likelihood of injury or burnout. Athletes may also use concurrent training, which combines both strength and endurance training in the same session. This kind of training is especially useful, considering most types of sports combine both strength and endurance.

Sports scientists and coaches now also understand a lot more about the demands of a sport, so they try to tailor training to target specific weaknesses or strengths in an athlete’s performance. All of this leads to less overtraining, illness and injury – which can help extend an athlete’s playing life.

Recovery

We also now know more about the best ways to help an athlete recover.

For example, sleep is now known to be extremely important for an athlete’s performance. This is because sleep releases human growth hormone, which is important for muscle growth and maintaining muscle mass. This not only allows an athlete to perform at their best, it also helps them be ready for their next training session or competition.

Since the body secretes less human growth hormone as a person ages, ensuring an athlete gets a good night’s sleep can be one strategy for helping them avoid this and maintain their athletic performance.

Research also continues to reveal the best approaches for recovery after competition or training. Ice baths are extremely popular now, as these reduce muscle soreness and can help athletes recover more quickly when needed.

In recent years, more athletes are adopting post-exercise recovery – such as ice baths or compression garments. However, the research on how useful these techniques are is still mixed. Athletes may also use wearables to track how long it takes their body to recover, which may better guide their training.

Better recovery means athletes are less likely to suffer from fatigue or injuries, which may help them compete longer.

Nutrition

Different diets and supplements can be used to enhance performance and recovery.

For example, probiotics (live microorganisms often found in fermented foods, such as yoghurt or kimchi) have been shown to help improve the absorption of key nutrients associated with immune system and bone health. This could help an athlete recover faster between competitions.

Good nutrition is also key for a long career. It’s well known that as we age we need to maintain our muscle mass differently. This may require adjustments to protein intake depending on the changing demands of exercise.

Personalised diets are also being adopted by athletes which may take into account their genetics, immune function and digestive system to ensure they’re eating the best diet for their body and to enhance recovery.

Personalising diets and changing them throughout their career can allow athletes to maintain their health and performance.

Mental health

An athlete’s mental health is a big reason many decide to retire from competition.

Research shows that athletes are more likely to experience mental health problems (such as anxiety) during their peak age of performance. But having the right psychological support can prevent mental health problems in athletes, and also give them the right coping mechanisms to deal with the stresses of high level competition. Research even shows making mental health a priority during training and competition is key to continued success.

As we learn more about training, ageing, nutrition and supporting athletes, there’s no doubt we will only continue to see more athletes extending their careers. If they continue to enjoy the sport, adapt to change and maximise their health along the way, it seems logical to continue.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Getty

Court short over Serena's final flourish

Margaret Court has called out Serena Williams following her retirement after losing against Aussie Alja Tomljanovic.

The US tennis champion’s career came to an end after she lost to Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 in the third round of the US Open.

This means Court will hold onto her grand slam record that Williams has tried besting for a long time.

Despite the win for Court, she didn’t hold back when she called out the US player who she says should have spoken more about her opponent following her loss.

“Serena, I’ve admired her as a player, but I don’t think she has ever admired me,” Court told The Telegraph UK.

“I thought it was bad that Williams didn’t mention her opponent more when she spoke.

“We were taught to be role models for the young, in how we behaved. We were taught to honour our opponent. You learned from your losses. We respected one another.”

In her retirement speech, Williams mentioned Court and slammed those who said she doesn’t deserve to be the GOAT (greatest of all time) because of her loss.

“There are people who say I’m not the GOAT because I didn’t pass Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles, which she achieved before the ‘open era’ that began in 1968,” Williams said.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record. Obviously I do. But day to day, I’m really not thinking about her. If I’m in a grand slam final, then yes, I am thinking about that record. Maybe I thought about it too much, and that didn’t help.

“The way I see it, I should have had 30-plus grand slams.”

Court went on to single out tennis organisers who she claims completely ignored her at Wimbledon, and the lack of invitations for other big tennis events.

“It’s very sad, because a lot of the press and television today, particularly in tennis, don’t want to mention my name,” she said.

“It’s only when they have to, because I still hold so many records. In 2020, I was meant to be coming to Wimbledon for the 50th anniversary of my calendar grand slam.

“But then Covid hit, so the honour never happened. The French Open didn’t invite me, the US Open didn’t invite me. Rod Laver had won the slam and I was going to be honoured in the same way, but no.

“I didn’t lose any sleep over it. But the honour has not been there for what I did do. In my own nation, I have been given titles, but they would still rather not mention me.”

Images: Getty

"The sport's greatest player": Billie Jean King's praise for Serena

Serena Williams will be remembered as tennis’ “greatest player”, according to World Tennis Association (WTA) founder Billie Jean King, after the World No. 1 announced she would be retiring from professional tennis at this year’s US Open.

Since her career began in 1995, Williams has won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 23 singles, 14 women’s doubles, and two mixed doubles, with King adding that the star player has “inspired a new generation of players and fans”.

“When Serena steps away from tennis, she will leave as the sport's greatest player,” King said in a statement.

“After a career that has inspired a new generation of players and fans, she will forever be known as a champion who won on the court and raised the global profile of the sport off of it”

Williams, who turns 41 next month, found it difficult to announce the news, writing in an op-ed published in Vogue that she felt “a great deal of pain” in deciding to hang up her racquet.

“There is no happiness in this topic for me. "This is the devil's work!": Nun pulls apart female models sharing a kiss

A shocked nun caused quite a stir in the streets of Italy when she pulled away two female models who were kissing for a photoshoot.

The nun was dressed in a white habit and rushed to stop Serena de Ferrari and Briton Kyshan Wilson who had locked lips in a Naples backstreet as they posed for a photo for Not Yet magazine.

“What are you doing? This is the devil's work,” the nun shouted at them as they giggled.

She looked around at the cameramen and crossed herself before saying: “Jesus, Joseph and Mary”.

Make up artist Roberta Mastalia, who was on the shoot, said they had to ask the nun to leave thinking she was just joking.

“We were on location in the Spanish Quarter in Naples, in a little sidestreet with the two models when all of a sudden the nun walked past,” he said, The Daily Mail reported.

“She asked us if we had been to Mass that day and when we said 'No' she started blaming young people for Coronavirus and then she saw the two models posing up ready to kiss and that's when she ran forward to split them up.

“Our first reaction was we were all stunned. They took it as a bit of a joke and you can see from the video the two girls are laughing.

“We then had to ask the nun to leave as we explained we had work to do and she slowly walked off.”

Both Serena and Briton shared clips of the incident to their social media with the caption “God doesn’t love LGBT”.

Local priest Father Salvatore Giuliano The Church is constantly updating its views but some of the older generation have not yet accepted it.

Images: Instagram

The text message that sparked fury among Wimbledon stars

Harmony Tan pulled out of the Wimbledon doubles tournament on Wednesday the 29th of June. This comes just hours after stunning Serena Williams, leaving her partner “sad, disappointed and angry”.

The French player was scheduled to play women’s doubles with Tamara Korpatsch but withdrew due to a thigh injury. She had sent her would-be teammate a text message to break the bad news.

“She just texted me this morning,” a furious Korpatsch wrote on Instagram. “Let me wait here 1 hour (alone on the court) before the match started. I’m very sad, disappointed and also very angry that I can’t play my 1st Doubles Grand Slam.

“It’s really not fair for me. I didn’t deserve that. She asked me before the tournament if I wanna play doubles and I said yes. I didn’t ask her, she asked me!

“If you’re broken after a 3h match the day before, you can’t play professional. That’s my opinion.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tamara Korpatsch (@tami.korpatsch)

Korpatsch included a series of critical hashtags in her post, including “unsportsmanlike”, “unfair” and “mad”.

Tan recorded the biggest win of her career with a three-set triumph over Williams on Wednesday the 29th of June.

Playing her first ever match at Wimbledon and only her ninth grand slam match overall, Tan secured a dramatic 7-5 1-6 7-6 (10-7) victory.

“When I first saw the draw, I was really scared. Because it’s Serena Williams, she’s a legend,” Tan said afterwards.

“When I was young I was watching her so many times on the TV. For my first Wimbledon this is just... wow.”

Williams has brushed off any talk of retirement after the defeat by insisting she is “motivated” to play at the US Open later this year.

“The US Open was the place where I won my first slam, it’s super-special. There’s definitely a lot of motivation to get better and play at home,” the 40-year-old said.

Williams refused to speculate on whether or not she will be back at Wimbledon in 2023, as doubts had been growing about whether Williams would return to the sport after dropping from number one to 1204th in the rankings after taking time off to recover from an injury.

Image: Instagram

Venus and Serena Williams’ nephew dead at just 21

The nephew of tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams, Alphonse Williams, has taken his own life.

The 21-year-old never met his famous aunties and grandfather King Richard, even though his mother – Sabrina, 57 – is the sporting duo’s half-sister from Richard’s first marriage to Betty Johnson, where he walked out on the five children when Sabrina was just eight, according to The Sun.

Now, tragically her youngest son took his own life on February the 3rd after battling his own demons, which included a recent diagnosis of Peyronie’s disease, which causes a curvature of the penis.

A third of those with the disease are also hit with “serious depression”.

Sabrina told The Sun: “When my son attempted [to end] his life two and a half years ago, I asked God, save his life and give me a little bit more time, please.

“I knew he was on loan and God called in that loan.” Sabrina, who lives in Las Vegas and shared a home with Alphonse and his elder brother Elijah, 23, only knew the devastating impact Peyronie's disease can have on mental health after her son's passing when she read about the condition online.

Alphonse, who also had bipolar disorder, felt like his life was over and is believed to have taken an overdose of an unknown medication. His autopsy results are yet to be released.

“It’s going to take six to eight weeks for the coroner to find out what he bought. We know he’s taken some strong medicines which would have made him fall asleep, he would have gone into respiratory distress, but wouldn't have known. He just never woke up.”

Sabrina also revealed: “My older son is still sending texts to his phone, talking about sports, he doesn't want to let go, that's part of his grieving process.

“I had my own mental health issues, but it wasn't until my late 30s that it was sorted out, when I was quitting jobs and jeopardising myself, screwing up, I was just so suicidal."
Sabrina's earlier life was blighted with mental health struggles, as a consequence of a tough, poverty-stricken upbringing after her father's abandonment.

“The rest of the family are now dead to me,” Sabrina said of her estranged father and siblings.

Image: Shutterstock

Serena Williams opens the door for Ash Barty

On the eve of the US Open, Serena Williams has dropped out due to a hamstring injury and the pundits are saying this leaves the coast clear for our Aussie World No. 1 – Ash Barty - to win the grand slam event.

At 39 years of age, the odds seem to be against Williams staying in the ring long enough to equal Margaret Court’s grand slam record of 24 singles titles, having claimed her last major victory at the 2017 Australian Open.

This latest injury means another chance to continue on the grand slam circuit has gone but it’s all good news for our Ash Barty who’s had a dream run on the circuit, winning Wimbledon in July and the Cincinnati Masters last week.

Williams said she’s upset to miss the major event

Williams took to Instagram to reveal she had pulled out of the tournament she has won six times.

‘After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,’ she wrote.

‘New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favourite places to play — I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar.

‘Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.’

Williams’ coach Partick Mouratoglou replied ‘You have tried everything’, and the US Open account added: ‘We’ll miss you, Serena! Get well soon.’

This could be the ‘end of an era’ in tennis

New York Times tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg posted on Twitter that it was the ‘end of an era’ because men’s stars Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will also be absent from Flushing Meadows.

‘The 2021 US Open will be the first Grand Slam event without Serena Williams, Roger Federer, or Rafael Nadal in the main singles draw since the 1997 US Open,’ wrote Rothenberg.

USA Today Sports columnist Dan Wolken added this move will ensure Williams continues to rank badly as she is already ranked 22nd in the world.

With the likes of our own Aussie Ash Barty winning so many titles – along with Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka who have dominated in past years, it could well mean Williams’ days of winning grand slams may be over.

Barty is now ranked as the world No. 1 by 3175 points over World No. 2 Sabalenka. This is because she’s won her fifth title of the year in Cincinnati, as well as Wimbledon and the Olympic bronze in the mixed doubles.

If Williams’ days of grand slam dominance are over, it would open the door for the younger brigade which of course includes Ash Barty.

The US Open starts on Monday August 30 and will screen in Australia on the Sports streaming service Kayo.

You can also watch this year’s men’s and women’s singles quarter-finals, semi-finals and both finals in Australia on SBS, or choose to live stream the matches via SBS On Demand.

Photo: Getty Images

Heartbreak as Serena Williams retires from Wimbledon

American tennis star Serena Williams' dream of winning an eighth Wimbledon singles title and equalling Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slams ended in tears this morning.

The 39-year-old was leading 3-1 in the first set of her first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus when she slipped and had to have her left leg examined.

She returned after receiving medical treatment but quit the game at 3-3 and walked off Centre Court in tears, clearly heartbroken as she waved goodbye to the crowd who gave her a huge round of applause.

This is the first time Wiliams has bowed out in the first round of Wimbledon.

She skipped her post-match press conference and instead released a statement on Instagram.

“I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg,” Williams wrote. “My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on Centre Court so meaningful.

“Feeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on — and off — the court meant the world to me.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Serena Williams (@serenawilliams)

Speaking to the New York Times, Williams' coach Patrick Mouratoglou revealed the injury was at the "top of the hamstring".

The world has reacted to Serena's heartbreak, with fellow tennis players weighing in on the incident.

“This is obviously terrible that it’s back-to-back matches and it hits Serena as well,” Federer said. “Oh, my God, I can’t believe it.”

Andy Murray also weighed in, tweeting: “Brutal for @serenawilliams but centre court is extremely slippy out there. Not easy to move out there.”

Wimbledon’s 2019 star Coco Gauff said she could not look, as the player who inspired her to take up tennis wept as she left the stage.

“I turned away,” Gauff said after beating British wildcard Francesca Jones in her first round match.

“I was in the gym actually stretching. I turned away because stuff like that makes me, like, really emotional.

“I wish that hopefully she can have a speedy recovery. Yeah, you could tell she was really emotional.

“Nobody ever wants to retire, but especially at a Grand Slam, a place as special as Wimbledon after waiting two years to come back.”

Serena hasn't won a Slam since the 2017 Australian Open.

Serena Williams' stirring words of support for Meghan Markle

Serena Williams has thrown her support behind Meghan Markle after her highly publicised interview with Oprah.

“Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life – and leads by example – with empathy and compassion,” Williams wrote.

“She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced.

“I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of colour to minimise us, to break us down and demonise us.

“We must recognise our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimisation are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal.

“I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect.

“Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

It's not the first time Williams has defended the Duchess.

In 2019, Meghan visited Wimbledon to watch Williams play courtside.

But the appearance attracted a flurry of negative press, with those sitting close by reportedly warned by security not to take photos of her.

Speaking at a Wimbledon press conference, Williams was asked by one reporter whether Meghan would watch her play in the finals given the “negative media” surround her last appearance.

“You know I didn’t know there was negative media out there,” Williams replied. “Every time I see her name attached to anything I don’t read it.”

The tennis superstar praised Meghan — who she has been close with since meeting at a celebrity volleyball event in 2014 — for being a good person.

“She couldn’t be a better friend to me — low moments, high moments she’s always there and that’s all I want to be to her,” she said.
